(Content Warning: Suicide) How have you planned for death? We often leave thoughts of death for old age, but the reality is that it often happens earlier than expected, and we can leave our loved ones without a plan. In this episode with Martha Hunt Handler, author of Winter of the Wolf, she and Jenn chat about the beauty of talking about death and leaving behind specific plans and gifts for our loved ones. Martha also shares the spiritual journey that led her to write her book that was inspired by the death of her best friend's 12 year old son. They talk about the otherness and added guilt, blame, and shame that comes with death by suicide and how we can better show up for families affected by suicide with more compassion. Martha reminds us to open up more conversations about death and dying, and to lean into our intuition. Hey! Pull up a chair and let's talk about how to set our loved ones up for success by making a will and checking it twice. It is one of the kindest things you can do for the people who love you. Wading thru grief without dealing with the legal system is complicated enough, so thinking ahead about what COULD happen to you, and planning next steps, is key. Our guest, Ryan Holmes, is with the law firm Clark Hill, and I met him in the weeks following my own mother's death in 2016. He was patient and kind with me, and taught me ALL about wills/estates…and let me cry in his office. In this episode, Ryan and I talk about end of life wishes, how to pick your beneficiaries, what probate court is, how messy and complicated things can get when documents are left unsigned. And Ryan gets to take off his attorney hat for a moment to remember the mother he lost over 17 years ago. And thank you to Chloe Baldwin and Alexandra Cohl for all the PR and social media support. As a mom, it can seem almost impossible to think about what would happen if you died. Even preparing for this episode, I started picturing my husband in his grief, searching aimlessly for passwords, digital photos, bank records, and everyday information that lives either online or in my head. Imagine a spouse who just lost their partner, spending hours, days, and months searching for everything. Rectifying bills, closing social media accounts, deleting subscriptions, changing “case of emergency” contacts. The list goes on and on.According to estimates, it takes 16 months to settle an estate on average. Combing through the digital components of a deceased person's life can take a lot longer and be much more stressful. Physical assets are one thing but finding, accessing, dissolving, or preserving a person's online life really is quite another. So that is what we are going to talk about today. Kate Hufnagel is a professional digital organizer, speaker, and educator who helps individuals and families do the important work that nobody likes to discuss. She is on a mission to normalize conversations about death planning, whether it be during family game night or out for brunch with friends. With a mindblowing background in big tech, Kate uses all of her know-how and experience to help people leave behind a well-organized digital estate. From mental health and managing relationships to raising changemakers and advocating for support, freemom is a podcast dedicated to ensuring that every mom feels heard. After many experiences with loss, including the death of her parents, Rachel founded After Light (formerly Black Dress) Consultants, a consulting firm that offloads the administrative tasks that come with legacy planning and after loss, so clients can focus less on the logistics and more on creating space to live worry- free and grieve peacefully. Rachel is the co-founder of Professionals of After Loss Services (PALS), which is a training and support network for industry professionals who provide services to individuals and families after the loss of a loved one. Prior to starting Black Dress Consultants, Rachel had a career in higher education fundraising, working for institutions such as Agnes Scott College, Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology. Rachel is a graduate of Agnes Scott College and serves on the Board of Directors on Love Not Lost, an Atlanta non-profit that provides grief tools and free photography sessions for families facing terminal diagnoses. Death is taboo. Even saying the word die or death makes many of us uncomfortable. But death is unavoidable. Having gone through two biggest tragedies in the span of one year, Izumi Inoue created Bereev, a death preparation platform in 2018, in hopes to help ease the burden and paperwork that families need to go through after a family member's passing. We discuss how Bereev compares to conventional and traditional wills, and why his users are mostly young Malaysians.
In this episode Melissa Neely, Rachel Garrett and Jake Paul talk about lessons that they have learned from the dead. They share personal stories that they have learned from mediumship sessions, themselves and through personal experience. Death is a subject that many people find uncomfortable to talk about, let alone plan for. However, it is important to have a plan in place for when our time comes. One way to do this is by creating a living will, which outlines your end-of-life wishes and specifies what medical treatments you do or do not want to receive.A living will is a legal document that allows you to communicate your preferences about end-of-life care to your family, loved ones, and medical providers. It can specify things like whether you want to be kept alive by artificial means, whether you want to be resuscitated if your heart stops, and whether you want to receive palliative care or hospice care in your final days.Having a living will in place can provide peace of mind for both you and your loved ones. It ensures that your wishes are known and respected, and it can help prevent family disagreements or legal battles over your medical care. In addition, a living will can also provide guidance for your medical team, who may be unsure of what treatments you would want or not want.Another important consideration when planning for death is deciding where you want to be buried or how you want your remains to be handled. This can be a difficult decision, but it is important to think about it in advance and communicate your wishes to your loved ones.If you have a religious affiliation, you may want to be buried according to specific customs or traditions. Alternatively, you may have a specific location in mind where you want to be buried, such as a family plot or a particular cemetery. Some people may choose to be cremated, and then have their ashes scattered in a meaningful location or kept in an urn.By making your burial wishes known in advance, you can help ensure that your wishes are respected and followed. It can also help prevent disagreements or confusion among family members during an already difficult time.In conclusion, planning for death is an important part of life, and it is something that everyone should consider. Creating a living will and deciding where you want to be buried can provide peace of mind for both you and your loved ones. It can also help ensure that your wishes are known and respected, and can prevent disagreements or legal battles over your medical care or burial. By taking the time to plan for these important decisions, you can help ensure that your final wishes a Support the showWe hope you found the episode to be enlightening and insightful. The Dead Girls talk with NYC drag king and professional death doula Cas aka Vigor Mortis about embracing mortality, voicing final wishes, and navigating the death industry as a minority. A death doula (also sometimes called end-of-life doula, or death midwife) is a trained nonmedical professional who provides emotional, physical, and educational support for someone nearing death. Cas explains how important representation is for LBGTQ folks can be during end of life planning.
Grieving for a loved one is acutely difficult just after the loss, and it's not a time when you want to sit across the desk from a salesperson in a high-pressure, time-sensitive situation. You're vulnerable to making hasty, costly decisions that might not make sense if you'd just had a little more time. Funeral homes provide important services, but they are businesses with a goal of maximizing each sale. They make money by selling products and services, some of which you and your family may not want, need, or be able to afford. In this episode, we review the many choices you have when a loved one dies, what funeral homes are required to disclose, and the marketing tricks some use to push unnecessary or high-end products. Plus, we explain why it's important to pre-plan your funeral. Special Guests: Joshua Slocum, executive director of the nonprofit Funeral Consumers Alliance, and Kevin Brasler, executive editor of Checkbook.org. Read Checkbook's full report on funeral homes including ratings and undercover price research, plus advice and resources to help plan a funeral.
This week I talk with Brie Smith, Services Director at Return Home, about the value of slowing down deathcare processes for grieving families. With the emergence of new, alternative forms of disposition like natural organic reduction which inherently take a long time, funeral professionals at the cutting edge of deathcare are seeing a huge benefit to going slow and allowing space for families to process their grief. Brie discusses how Return Home's 60+ day process allows families to form relationships with the deathcare professionals taking care of their deceased loved ones and allows more time for building and experiencing grief rituals. We also talk about how this mentality could be beneficial across the profession in both how we work with families, and within internal deathcare company culture. We welcome Benny Capaul back for Part 2 of his most recent visit where we discuss planning for your death. It's so important to share your wishes with your loved ones and make known how you'd like your funeral or memorial (or lack thereof!) known. We touch on Wills and Trusts, as well as Funeral Representatives. This episode really got us thinking about our wishes and having those tough conversations with our families. We have to normalize talking about death, and Benny's advice was really wonderful! You can find Benny on his podcast with his brother Nick called Let's Talk About Death. Today we are talking about a topic that many - or shall I say most? - people want to avoid but really nobody can.... death. But this is such an important topic, because death is really about life. When we get comfortable with death we live in a way that really speaks to our hearts a lot more fully than it would otherwise.Becoming comfortable with our own mortality calls us to live and love a little more fully and a little more authentically. Opposed to being on our deathbed and then saying: "Oh, I wish I had.... I should have done ...... why didn't I?"I have invited Karen Hendrickson to the podcast. Karen is a Death Doula, a Coach & Educator and the Co-Founder of The Death Doula Network of BC. She is passionate about leading heart-centered death education to support us in exploring and accepting our mortality. We are talking about what a death doula really is, how death planning can prevent a lot of grief, additional heart ache, emotional clutter as well as legal issues. Because no preparation creates a lot of extra burden and emotion for the people that are left behind that comes on top of and along with the grief that these people are going to carry anyways. We both talk of personal experiences with death and our message really is: Why don't we begin to look at death planning from the perspective of coming from a place of love, and as a gift to those we leave behind. It is as well as a gift to ourselves, versus something to be feared.
