Spring-Heeled Jack and the Gorbals VampireThis week, we explore two British urban legends: the Gorbals Vampire and Spring-heeled Jack.In 1954 Glasgow, hundreds of children armed with knives and homemade weapons descended on the Southern Necropolis cemetery hunting a supernatural entity with iron teeth that allegedly killed two local boys.Meanwhile, in Victorian London, Spring-heeled Jack terrorized citizens from 1837 to 1904, described as a well-dressed gentleman with glowing eyes who could make impossible leaps, breathe blue and white fire, and attack victims with metallic claws. Both cases sparked significant paranormal panic and were documented in the Victorian press. We debate whether these incidents represent historical mass hysteria or genuine supernatural encounters with entities from British folklore. In addition, we examine how Scottish urban myths, Victorian era monsters, and paranormal history might explain the phenomena, while considering how both stories reflect societal fears of their time.Or is it possible that Spring-heeled Jack might have been a demonic figure or one of the mysterious jumping entities from British supernatural folklore? Could the Gorbals incident represent children's folklore and cemetery legends manifesting during a period of societal tension?Patreon: Support Believing the Bizarre and get tons of extra content by joining our Patreon. For updates, news, and extra content, follow Believing the Bizarre on social media:InstagramFacebookTwitterDiscordShop Merch: You can rep Believing the Bizarre and buy some unique merchWant to send BTB something? If the Almighty promises to give you a blessing, your ears should perk up. If God promises to give you abundance, health, prosperity, fertility, security, and all manner of blessing, your question should be - what must I do to be deserving of this? Our Parsha begins with such a promise. In the event that we steadfastly and here to a certain category of mitzvos, the Almighty promises to give us all these blessings. The precise identity of the mitzvos that engender those blessings is somewhat obscure. In this very special edition of the Parsha Podcast, we explore what our Sages mean when they talk about "mitzvos that people tend to trample upon with their heels." If we follow their guidance, we will emerge well-heeled in more ways than one.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Transcript: Hey Pod lovers. I'm your host Marie and If you're joining us for the first time: Welcome! The Mastercast is a podcast recommendation show that brings you a brand new non-spoiler binge-worthy review every week of the best podcasts in a short and sweet 2-3 minute summary on everything you could want to know, from the number of hosts to on average how long you can expect each episode to be. New episodes come out every Monday. You can find the week's other reviews on the show's social on Instagram @themastercast and Twitter @mastercastpods. If you like what you hear on the show and want to help out this newly independent show you can find me on Buy me a coffee and Patreon by searching the mastercast. I'd really appreciate it. Heeled - No Spoilers! Today's review is of 2020 miniseries that is hard to define. At its core is a crime, not violent but creepy. Surrounding that is high-profile gossip, NYC drama, and a laundry list of true plot twists that are stranger than fiction. Long before his political debut as U.S president, Donald Trump was the biggest celebrity in New York City but that doesn't mean politics doesn't play a bit of a role in this story. Marla Maples, an actress, model, and singer, met Trump in 1989 during his marriage to Ivana Trump. This affair was kept very discreet with the help of Maples's publicist and agent Chuck Jones. Maples could trust Jones with absolutely everything… or so she thought. In 1992 after months of stealing Maples's shoes, Jones was convicted of burglary, criminal possession of stolen property, and weapons possession. However, this was only the beginning. In this podcast hosts and former prosecutors, Trisha LaFache and Kevin J. Hynes take you through every twist and turn of the case. Hynes was actually the trial prosecutor on the Chuck Jones case and both hosts are compelling storytellers. The perfect blend of true crime and scandal, the level of celebrity gossip wasn't annoying and didn't outshine the facts of the case. It did take me an episode to truly be invested though. Apple Podcasts has 4.8 stars, 106 ratings, and 28 written reviews. The series has a total of seven episodes that are on average about 48 minutes long. We couldn't always afford going to the movies when I was growing up. So my brother and I would spend some Saturday or Sunday afternoons with our grandparents. They loved westerns. John Wayne. Bonanza. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Clean, wholesome classics, where good guys wore white hats and hunted up bad men to put ‘em in jail or find a tall oak tree. Which made me a fan. Remembering sitting on the couch next to Mamaw, under a quilt she made, shelling pecans and sneaking more than made it back to the kitchen for future pies. Maybe that's why I like Curtis Long so much. He puts out clean classic old west adventures that take me back to a simpler time. If you like westerns, give High Range Revenge a listen. Rich Text is a reader-supported project — no ads or sponsors! We'll admit it: we weren't exactly champing at the bit to watch “Sex/Life,” the new lightly pornographic Netflix drama. The trailer, and first twenty minutes, suggested that the show would be both heavy-handed (a butterfly in a jar to symbolize a hot mom being smothered by the confines of domesticity? groundbreaking) and bizarrely menacing in tone. If we're going to watch a campy, graphically sexual romance, we prefer a bit more spark and frothy fun and a bit less foreboding voiceover. But then, well, everyone started watching it. A lingering moment of male full-frontal fueled a think-piece cycle. Reviews were, uh, less than kind. Against our own initial instincts, we grew intrigued. And so, at last, we binged. “Sex/Life” tells the story of Billie, a ragingly hot and miserable Greenwich stay-at-home mom. She has a preschooler and a newborn, a sculpted Greek god of a husband who is also a successful hedge funder and living saint, a long-abandoned career as a psychologist and PhD candidate, and a throbbing need for sexual adventure and fulfillment that has begun to explode messily all over her life. In a melodramatic voiceover, taken from the pages of her Word doc journal, Billie recalls the explosive sex she used to have with her bad-boy ex, Brad, who broke her heart, and yearns for a rekindling of that part of herself. And then, oops, her husband reads the diary — AND she runs into Brad, who she learns has been hooking up with her best friend, Sasha, but still has feelings for her. Who will she choose? What will her husband do? The drama unfolds from here, but all the plot is crammed into a handful of minutes in between endless explicit sex scenes, which manage to feel more grim than sensual. In this discussion, we cover the first four episodes of “Sex/Life”: getting to know the paper-flat characters, unpacking the themes, and breaking down the credulity-stretching plot turns. We hope you enjoy! We've been reading…Filthy Animals, the new short story collection by Brandon Taylor, author of the recent novel Real Life, which I absolutely adored. There's a thread of linked stories, about an unusual relationship that forms between three young people at a university — two dance students, who are dating, and a man who becomes entangled in a sexual game between them — that serves as a spine for the collection, but the stories also dip into the lives of a desperate nanny, a tenuously closeted woman in her first lesbian relationship, and more. The whole collection is acutely observed and emotionally nuanced, a true pleasure to read. -ClaireWe've been watching…“My Unorthodox Life,” a reality show on Netflix about Julia Haart — current CEO of Elite World Group, and former member of an Ultra-Orthodox community in Monsey — and her four children. It's a fascinating look at religious fundamentalism and the path one family took in walking away from it. -EmmaThe second season of “I Think You Should Leave”! I almost cried with joy when I saw a new season of Tim Robinson's relentlessly uncomfortable, painfully funny sketch comedy show in my Netflix carousel. The new season is rife with absurd bits that spoof office politics, social niceties, and the death throes of capitalism. (If you've never watched the show, start with this season 1 sketch and then watch all two seasons.) -ClaireWe've been listening to…“Drama Queens,” the podcast where former “One Tree Hill” stars Bethany Joy Lenz, Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton recap the series, episode by episode. The first episode gave me all the nostalgic feels about my days of WB-watching. -EmmaWe've been buying…Heeled sandals from Zara. I decided I needed to mix up my shoe collection and wanted some fun heels that also weren't super high and weren't super expensive. I landed on these fun pearl-trimmed ones! -EmmaI'm on a personal spending fast after months of trying to figure out what my summer style would be, in a postpartum world — I've figured it out, it's floaty dresses and high-waisted shorts with tank tops, next question — but my neighborhood park has a composting drop-off site, so I got a compost pail for our kitchen counter! It's part of my long-term plan to suck less at making sure everything in our home is recycled and disposed of in the most sustainable possible way. Recently I've also been trying out Bee's Wrap and Stasher bags to cut down on our plastic use, and reusable paper towels. -Claire This is a public episode.
