For our Samhain episode for this year, we interviewed Angela, Death Midwife and founder of Journey Home Death Care about perceptions of death and how to be advocates for our own death. We want to make a heavy content warning for discussions of death, suicide, and suicide ideation, but despite these heavy topics, Angela brings a gracious compassion to all these discussions and our conversation was very affirming. We have also included resources for suicide prevention in the show notes. Welcome to today's episode, where I'm joined by Victoria Wilbraham—mentor, guide, and host of *Normal Boring Freebirth* Victoria's approach to birth is beautifully simple and grounded, helping families strip back unnecessary interventions and complicated language to experience birth in its most raw, embodied form. She supports families in trusting their own "yes" and "no," finding their voice and asking questions that nourish their journey. Today, we dive into the common fears Victoria sees arise in the women she works with and how she guides them to examine these fears, often tracing them to their roots in the ultimate fear—death. As our conversation unfolds, we explore: - How to bring death into conversation with reverence, just as we do with life. - How the fear of death can drive unnecessary interventions in birth. - Reclaiming death as a rite of passage, deserving of connection and presence. - How grief and death have been medicalized and silenced, and what it might mean to reclaim their sacredness. This episode also sets the stage for next week's conversation with Death Midwife, Rev. Olivia Bareham, founder of *Sacred Crossings*. Rev. Bareham guides individuals and families through end-of-life care, bringing reverence and support to the journey of dying. *If today's topic feels intense, please honor that feeling and come back when you're ready. THIS IS PART TWO - Listen to part one hereCONTENT HEADS UP: This episode contains discussions of death, dying, end-of-life care, and sensitive topics related to mortality, including chosen suicide and medicalization of death and illness. Listener discretion is advised, especially for individuals who may find these topics distressing or triggering. Please prioritize your emotional well-being while engaging with this content. Also, Ali wants to note that when she asks Karen about her thoughts on suicide, she meant to make a disctinction between “chosen” suicide (when someone wants to live but they are in too much physical pain/their body is too deteriorated without hope of recovery) and “suicide under duress” (meaning due to emotional/psychological/spiritual pain, that may or may not be accompanied by an unavoidably dying body, the person does not want to live). Of course facing a death someone does not want can also be considered duress! SYNOPSIS:What does good acting and dying have in common? In this episode, Ali discusses all things death, dying, and living as bodies with Karen Bellone, Certified End-of-Life Doula and Death Educator. They focus on the interconnectedness of life and death, the significance of conscious living, and the complexities of end-of-life care. Karen shares her experiences working with dying individuals, highlighting the challenges of the dying process, including issues related to dementia and Alzheimer's. They discuss the importance of compassionate and holistic approaches to end-of-life care, emphasizing the need for conscious decision-making aligned with personal values to achieve a good death without regrets. Throughout the conversation, they reflect on the essence of embodiment and the importance of being present in the moment, trusting the intelligence of the body to embrace a richer life and ultimately a better death. ALI & KAREN EXPLORATION POINTS:- The concept of a 'good death,' this discussion emphasizes the significance of conscious decision-making and holistic approaches to end-of-life care, challenging societal norms and perceptions surrounding death. - The complexities, ethical considerations and medicalization surrounding end-of-life decisions, highlighting the need for open dialogue and support for individuals facing such choices.- The role of a Death Doula, illuminating the profound support and guidance provided by these compassionate professionals in assisting individuals and families through the dying process, fostering a sense of empowerment and comfort.- How our physical and emotional bodies communicate and play integral roles in the dying process, highlighting the importance of listening to and honoring the body's wisdom. - Insights into embracing conscious living, pursuing meaningful experiences, and aligning actions with personal values to cultivate a sense of fulfillment and purpose.- Sensory experiences shape our perception of life and death, emphasizing the significance of sensory elements in the dying process and fostering connections with loved ones.To be an angel to the podcast, click here: To read more about the podcast, click here: MORE ALI MEZEY:Website: Personal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films: MORE KAREN BELLONE:Film Website: Website: The Seventh Sense BIO:Founder, Doula, Educator: Karen Bellone, MFA, is a Certified End-of-Life Doula and Death Educator. Ep. 64: Redefining Grief and Embracing End-of-Life with Ashley Oppon The way we perceive and approach death and grief has transformed. Traditionally considered taboo, these subjects are now being addressed with increased openness and empathy. Hospice care, for instance, focuses on providing comfort, dignity, and support to individuals during their end-of-life journey, highlighting the importance of a more holistic approach to this stage of life. This evolving perspective acknowledges death as a natural part of the human experience and grief as a multi-faceted emotion. By reshaping our perceptions, we not only embrace the inevitability of mortality but also create an environment that promotes compassionate conversations and offers solace to grieving, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for everyone involved. Join the conversation with Ashley Oppon as we explore how African and Western cultures deal with death and mourning. We'll also discuss what these cultures can learn from each other. Ashley Oppon is a Registered Nurse, Shamanic Practitioner, and a Death Midwife. She is also a Home Funeral Guide and an advocate for Medical Aid in Dying and Green and Natural Burials. Seeing death in many different ways throughout her nursing career, she wanted to do more work to make death culture more of a place for reflection and healthy grieving. She has done extensive death training and can support individuals from advanced planning to funerals and vigils. She is a part of Sisters of the Sacred, a spiritual collective that creates sacred space for all of life's major moments. With her death work, she hopes to make the dying process a space for peace at the end. Tune in!

The Wyrd Mountain Gal Show with Byron and Alicia Death, Disgust, & Blu Emu Episode Airs Sunday 1-30-22 7pm EST When asked how she's doing, Byron replied "I'm just about getting by with prayer & wine'. Did you know she will eat Velveeta before paying $500 lb for fine Stilton....although she does like a good Stilton... They start out reminiscing about old Asheville, the black business district, the restaurants, & the music & meander through a few more topics before demonstrating the fabled Appalachian Goodbye". ***Trigger Warning-many gross subjects here, also, lots of death, adult subjects, porno, etc. The usual madness for some, but if you're squeamish or catch the vapors easily you should not listen to any of it! While I was on my self-care break I begin to notice the word grief swirling around a lot. I guess I had gotten so used to hearing it that it became part of my everyday language. On my self-care break all of the random chatter got a lot quieter in my head and the important things became louder. Everyone one is grieving something or someone. This meditation is dedicated to those who are grieving lost loved ones. I hope this helps someone. Support the show

One of the phrases I hear very often in the military is "Words Matter". I think we can all agree that they definitely do matter and they also have the power to change the perspective of a situation....and sometimes the outcome too. In this podcast we explore a few words or phrases used when talking about people who are dying from illnesses or dying in general. I also talk about how we can turn those phrases or word around and put a more positive spin on death and dying. Support the show

Today I share my conversation with Sharon Ehlers. She lost her best friend Joy and ex-fiancé John within a few years of each other, both to suicide. Sharon is the founder of Grief Reiki® - a multidimensional approach to grief and loss using emotional recovery, Reiki and other spirituality-based tools. She is also an award-winning Author, Grief Educator, Death Midwife and Reiki Master Teacher. She has three beautiful children and lives in Los Angeles, CA. She talks about the isolation she felt after her losses as well as the immense affect on her outlook on life and ultimately she took a completely new path. She discusses how she started down this path by allowing herself to be led from spirit. She discusses how reiki was a stronger tool for her - as she was using before her loss - but she also discusses how her spiritual connection became more dialed in and developed as well. She de-mystifies Reiki for us - us as basic laymen, AND we also dive a (little) deeper into energy healing and the whys and how's of it working. Energy is everywhere and it's everything. Once we accept it - harnessing energy is easy and it IS SO HEALING!!! This is a fun and enlightening conversation and Sharon has wisdom worth listening to! Lucinda Bakken White, author and soul guide, began her professional career with a MBA and a coveted position at IBM only to realize that material success did not make her happy, as her family and the over culture had promised it would. After moving through a suicidal depression at age 27, Lucinda boldly pushed against cultural norms to know and express authenticity. Remarkably, her biggest shift happened when she touched an ancient buffalo bone, and it ignited her passion for working with dead animals. For over two decades, Lucinda has immersed herself into the sacred realms of death and dying, where she experiences beauty in the seemingly ugly, witnesses the laws of transformation, and recognizes herself in the reflection of nature. Now, as an elder and expert in the process of self-discovery and personal transformation, Lucinda inspires and guides others to connect with their authentic nature and move through large and small journeys of change that are triggered by fear, depression, anxiety, exhaustion, heartbreak, identity crisis, life stage transitions, illness or the desire to live a more meaningful life. She is also the author of her memoir, Confessions of a Bone Woman: Realizing Authentic Wildness in a Civilized World--and currently studying to become a Death Midwife. Legally Speaking with Victoria Lawyer Michael Mulligan on CFAX 1070Issues discussed include overrides of federal prisoner security classifications which result in inmates classified as medium security, being transferred to minimum security institutions. This was an issue recently as a result of two inmates escaping from the William Head Institution, which is a minimum-security facility, despite having been classified as medium security risks. One of the inmates had been convicted of escaping jail on five previous occasions. A 2001 report from Correctional Service Canada, that examined the reasons given for overriding inmate risk classifications is discussed. The report found that that was a 13.6% increase in escape rate when risk classifications were overridden and that in 30% of cases the reasons given for an override were inappropriate. Also discussed was a British Columbia Supreme Court decision involving the College of Midwives of British Columbia, and a woman who described herself as a Death Midwife. The woman’s website described death midwifery as a form of pastoral care. The College argued that the Health Professions Act prohibited the woman from using the term “midwife”. The judge in the case found that the act did prohibit the use of the term, however, it unconstitutionally interfered with the woman’s freedom of expression because it was overly broad and did not minimally impair the woman’s freedom of expression. Finally, the requirements for someone to be found not criminally responsible, as a result of a mental disorder, are discussed, along with the consequences of such a finding. In order to be not criminally responsible a judge would need to be persuaded that someone committed an act or omission while suffering from a mental disorder that rendered the person incapable of appreciating the nature and quality of the act of omission or of knowing it was wrong.Where someone is found to be not criminally responsible, they would be subject to detention, in a medical facility, until a review board concluded they did not pose a significant risk to public safety. In some cases, this could be for a much longer period of time then they would have served in jail.

Recently, I went through a death midwife training, and it's something that I've been getting so many questions about ever since, so today on the Belonging Podcast, I've invited Death Midwife, Death Educator, and Founder and Director of Final Passages, Jerrigrace Lyons, to join me in talking about our simultaneous aversion and fascination with death. We're talking about conscious dying and how to consider our options to make choices around our own deaths and the deaths of our loved ones to truly connect with them and aid in our grieving process. And how this embracing and connection with death can bring a depth of awareness and celebration into what it means to be alive. Today on #itsthemiamiknightshow we’re discussing “It’s All Connected” Left behind to Grieve Suicide, Synchronicity and Reiki please welcome @griefreiki Sharon Ehlers. ___________________________________ After the suicides of a close friend and a former fiancé within a two-year period, she was confused about how many people either avoided her or didn’t want to talk about these events. In her grief, she tried to make sense of it all but it seemed like it was “never the right time” to bring it up with people. So she took a deep breath and tried to work through the grief on her own. She dragged herself into work and somehow made it through the days and weeks that followed. Her thought was there had to be a better way. ___________________________________ She is the founder of Grief Reiki®️ a multidimensional approach to grief and loss using emotional recovery, Reiki and other spiritual base tools. In this wonderfully grim exploration, Amanda, Jacob, and (returning friend) Dani go beyond the pale... for a hallowing chat with a most morbid special guest, Angie! Trained as a Death Midwife and Certified in 2011 by Nora Cedarwind Young, Angie is one of the founders of the Death Midwife movement. She is also a Rite of Passage Officiant, Senior Minister at Earth Traditions Church, Emeritus Board Member of the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions, and Pagan Student Advisor at the University of Chicago. With many thanks to both her and our dear friend Wee Bee, it's with ghastly delight we present this edifying dance with the dead. Treading along this mortal coil, there's talk about: End-of-life care and planning, funerary practices, body disposition, transitions, cultural views on death and dying, elder care, grief and mourning, rites of passage, ancestor work, prolonging life and death, closure, what Death Midwives do, comfort and intimacy, decomposition, and oodles more. It was the late psychiatrist Dr Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's book On Death and Dying that changed our attitudes to death and grief. Kubler-Ross was passionate about palliative care and what she saw as the disrespect of the dying in hospitals around the world.
TODAY'S GUEST: Rev. Olivia Bareham, founder of Sacred Crossings is a certified Death Midwife, Home Funeral Guide and Celebrant. She holds bachelor's degrees in Education and Natural Theology and Sacred Healing and is an ordained Inter-faith Minister. Olivia's experience as an auxiliary nurse, hospice volunteer and her mother's end-of-life caregiver, inspired her to investigate more meaningful and personal alternatives to traditional funeral practices. “At the event of death and for a few days following, there is a window of opportunity for great healing to occur. When the funeral home took my mother's body away just hours after her death, I felt this window close. We were left feeling helpless, unsure and wishing that we had had a little more time.” In an effort to provide a way to keep this window open and facilitate the healing process, Olivia immersed herself in the study of death and dying culminating in certification as a Death Midwife and Home Funeral Guide. She subsequently created Sacred Crossings with the mission of empowering and guiding families to reclaim the ‘Lost art and healing ritual of a Home Funeral'. Over the next ten years the demand for information about conscious dying, after-death care and home funerals increased: “When I was called bedside to help an individual make their transition, they were often remorseful about unresolved relationships, or fearful of what was going to happen, or stressed about their suffering. It seemed that transitioning would be a gentler, less stressful process if people learned how to prepare ahead of time. Also, when a loved-one died, families were often completely unprepared. They were unaware of their options for after-death care and the complex funeral industry made them feel helpless, vulnerable and afraid. It became clear there was a huge need for death education so I began teaching classes and workshops on The Art of Dying, After-death Care and Home Funerals.” Olivia is a writer, producer and public speaker. She is an active member of the National Home Funeral Alliance, and past President of the board for The Los Angeles Hospice at Anam Cara in Topanga Canyon. Sacred Crossings is a Los Angeles-based company offering education, support and guidance for conscious dying and home funerals. Sacred Crossing Guides assist families with end-of-life planning; death midwifery; creating a vigil and funeral at home and cremation or burial arrangements. Their education institute offers workshops and classes and a certificate program in The Art of Death Midwifery. Students are both professional and non-professional end-of-life caregivers and those wishing to delve deeper into the dying process to further their spiritual growth. Graduates of the death midwifery program are eligible to serve as Sacred Crossing Guides. The Sacred Crossings Funeral Home is coming soon & will offer a full range of services including cremation, burial, funerals and memorials. Sacred Crossings is a non-denominational service without cultural or religious discrimination. While it is best to begin funeral planning in advance, we can help a family at any time. Connect With Today's guest: Rev. Olivia Bareham Website: www.SacredCrossings.com Olivia(at)sacredcrossings.com On Facebook IN THIS EPISODE: It may sound strange to you to think about having a death midwife, but it really makes sense when you think about it. We hire a midwife to come in at the birth of a child - the entrance into this life. Why wouldn't it be appropriate to hire a midwife for death, the departure from this life? My guest today IS a death midwife and is training others with the skills to fill this important role in helping those who are dying and their families deal with the fact of death in a more healthy and positive way. Death is one of those transitions in life that is so strange and uncomfortable that people don't like to talk about it. But that's only because we've been taught to be uncomfortable about it. In many cultures, there are family rituals centered around the death of a loved one that actually help with closure and healing over the 3 days following the death. A death midwife's role is to come into a family situation and help those struggling with the death process to learn, grow, and come to accept the inevitable fact of death for all of us. It's a healthy process of listening, asking questions, and learning as everyone learns how to say goodbye in a healthy way that benefits the one dying as well as those who survive them. What is YOUR biggest fear about dying? Is it the pain? In this conversation Olivia and I chat about how the pain is not such a fearful thing and why it's not the best thing for people to be over medicated to the point that they can't interact with their family or friends during the last days of their lives. It robs everyone of a very important part of the death transition that could make the experience more positive for everyone. If you are curious about end of life issues and the role that a death midwife might be able to play in your family or future, I encourage you to listen to this conversation. I learned a lot myself about the positive role a death midwife can play in an otherwise uncomfortable and difficult situation. I hope you find something in Olivia's stories and experiences that will bring you hope and help as you deal with death in your own life. This episode was recorded at the 6th Annual Afterlife and Awareness Conference in St. Louis, MO, where I had the pleasure of meeting Rev. Olivia Bareham of Sacred Crossings. You can hear the birds and breezes in the background as we sat under the sun in the hotel courtyard on a beautiful Missouri day. Olivia is a certified Death Midwife, Home Funeral Guide and Celebrant. She holds bachelors degrees in Education and Natural Theology and Sacred Healing and is an ordained Inter-faith Minister. Olivia’s experience as an auxiliary nurse, hospice volunteer and her mother’s end-of-life caregiver, inspired her to investigate more meaningful and personal alternatives to traditional funeral practices. Plus, she is a closet rock-star. We cover a gamut of topics related to home funeral care, including: If and where it's legal (Spoiler: Yes, and everywhere) A cheap but beautiful and deeply personal alternative to an expensive casket How our deaths are affecting the environment What she learned about death from giving birth
Happy Valentine's Day. Put down the box of Russell Stover candies and listen up. It's time to talk about death. There's no better way to celebrate love than to honor the fact that we eventually lose the ones we love. Or do we? On the Block Radio is a show about transformation. More specifically, we are a show about how people face intense experiences in their lives and transform them into meaning, beauty and purpose. There is no bigger transformation than that of death. To confront our own deaths, the sages of every religion teach, is the key to unlocking the eternal aspects within our consciousness and our bodies. There are few more basic human issues than the ever-ticking clock of our own mortality. It is what makes life tragic and glorious at the same time. And to help someone prepare for a beautiful death is to help a person fulfill their deepest potential as a human being. There is literally no higher calling. This is the calling Mellisa Dodson heard, and answered, on March 25, 2014. Melissa Dodson is a California girl who found her home in the trees of Portland, OR. She's a wife and mom, a writer and a Death Midwife. She writes about being a motherless daughter, grief, depression, vulnerability and the beauty of a messy life. She is a dream catcher, a grief warrior, a survivor, a book whore. Studying writing with Lidia Yuknavitch woke up all the broken pieces of her heart, and reminded her that words save. She now studies Dangerous Writing under the tutelage of Tom Spanbauer and the magic makers in the basement. Her work has been featured on The Manifest-Station, Rebelle Society, The Tattooed Buddha, behind-the-ink, Some Talk of You & Me, Breathe In. Breathe Out. Live, among other online publications. Since the March 25, 2014 death of her mother, her passions lie with grief, compassionate end-of-life planning, conscious death and dying, home death/home vigil/home funeral and natural/green burial. In 2015, she founded Grief Rites, a Facebook community to safely and openly talk about death and grief (website coming soon). She also curates the Grief Rites Readers Series, a literary event in NE Portland, to bring people together to hold sacred space for each other in their grief. The Readers Series meets the first Monday of each month at American Legion Post 134, and is free to all. Her next chapter includes turning Grief Rites into a 501c(3) non-profit organization. Funds raised through the Grief Rites Foundation will take the Readers Series on the road to broaden the reach of the grief safety net that she's created, and bring in renowned speakers and authors in the realm of death and grief. Additionally, there will be a fund to assist people with covering funeral and burial costs for green/natural burials. She is also continually studying, and offering her services though her Portland based business, Into the Light, LLC. Her offerings include compassionate end-of-life planning and education, death midwifery services, home funeral guidance, caregiver support and grief support.

Rev. Olivia Bareham has been a powerful inspiration and guiding force in my life and in my relationship with death – something that is often difficult for us to talk about or even think about, but something that is also necessary to talk about when you’re discussing life. That is why Olivia – who is a certified Death Midwife, Home Funeral Guide, and Celebrant – founded Sacred Crossings with the vision of changing the culture of death and dying through education, death midwifery, and home funerals. Olivia not only counsels bedside with the dying but facilitates classes and workshops in conscious dying and a certificate program in The Art of Death Midwifery.
