For our 176th show we welcome Al Zanders, a multifaceted artist hailing from the vibrant music scene of London. His musical journey is punctuated by his renowned edits and stellar productions, making waves with iconic labels like Phonica Records and Roy Davis Jr's Undaground Therapy Muzik. While Al is now based in London, his heart remains in Sheffield, where he operates his beloved label, A-Z Records. The reach of his music is far and wide, from the electrifying Dekmantel Boiler Room set by Midland to the eclectic soundscape of Gilles Peterson's 6 Music show. Renowned names like Leon Vynehall, Denis Sulta, and more have all featured his tracks in their playlists, solidifying Al's reputation as a go-to artist for genre-bending, dancefloor-igniting productions. In fact, his prowess as a producer was so undeniable that it prompted Roy Davis Jr to revive his classic Chicago label, Undaground Therapy Muzik, after 16 years, solely to release Al's 2018 Guidance EP. And the story continues, with Al's music slated for a comeback on the label in summer 2023, alongside a slew of edits and releases in both digital and vinyl formats. Notably, Al's track "Long Gone" has achieved over 3 million streams on Spotify, a testament to his growing influence in the industry. When it comes to his DJing, Al Zanders is all about fun, energy, and soul. Whether he's spinning tunes in an intimate Tokyo basement club, rocking the stage at a massive festival like Lost Village or Gotwood, where he's been hailed as a highlight, or gracing the decks of a renowned venue like XOYO, you can always count on Al to bridge the musical realms of deep, soulful house and disco from around the globe. His sets effortlessly traverse Italo, South African, Anatolian, American, and more, weaving a rich tapestry of sonic experiences. This uninhibited and in-the-moment approach to music is a homage to Sheffield, the city where Al first discovered his passion for DJing and fell in love with the art form. After a brief hiatus, Al is making a triumphant return in 2023 and beyond with an exciting lineup of back-to-back releases on various imprints, proving that he's just getting started on his musical journey. For his Bside Podcast Al Zanders treats us to some of his most cherished records from many genres. The first half hour consists of ambiant, funk and afrobeat, then he moves to all sorts of house music for the final hour. This week's entry to the Local Selection Mix Series features an eclectic mix of house and techno from Dublin Digital Radio and The Midnight Disco Resident Sahana. Revealing a collaboration immersed within Melbourne, late September sees Strawberry Fields and Beyond the Valley regulars Market (Sean Rault) and Memories (Oliver James) combine with one of the city's finest veterans, Mike Callander. With a mutual love for creating unique dancefloor moments, with Market Memories supported by the likes of Camelphat, Denis Sulta, and Cristoph alongside Callandar's work remixing Aussie rockers The Drones and The Jezabels plus playing in The MESS Synthesizer Orchestra, the trio combine for the very first time to deliver ‘Clover' – joined by Gold Coast DJ and producer Little Fritter on remix duties. Breaking traditional production conventions, with Callander warping and twisting the track's infectious bassline to accompany the bubbling hooks and slick percussion laid down by the Market Memories guys, ‘Clover' is a club cut made for big moments, while Little Fritter's take ups the tempo as shuffling drums, snaking low-ends and soaring synths make for a no-nonsense, dynamic ride into the peak time.

Wales is a country that has produced its fair share of musical talent over the years. Some of the world’s biggest recording artists have been proud to call the small British nation their home and when it comes to electronic music, some of the industry’s heaviest hitters and most influential characters have also been produced within the Welsh borders, none more so than dance music royalty Sasha and Paradise and Hot Creations head honcho Jamie Jones. The latest talent to stand up and be noticed is the North Welsh double act BRODYR. BRODYR, the Welsh word for brothers, is the musical alias of the sibling partnership of Mike and Dave Blackwell. Although only started in September 2015, the seeds for the BRODYR project were planted a lot longer ago than the three years it has been in operation. With both brothers showing a clear inclination for music from an early age, each learning to play the piano by ear, their path into the electronic music industry was cemented by regular trips to Ibiza, first with their parents as children and later, into their teens and beyond, with friends. Heavily influenced by some of the Balearic Island’s most recognisable faces, in particular Carl Cox and Marco Carola, BRODYR have developed their own unique style that encompasses the full techno spectrum, ranging from minimal to tech house and everything else in between. Having played their very first gig in Space Ibiza, big things were always likely to follow for BRODYR. Following up their debut performance with appearances in some of Europe’s biggest clubbing institutions, BRODYR have become regulars at The Warehouse Project and have also played venues like EGG London, as well as performances at festivals such as Parklife, Manchester, and Hideout, Croatia. Appearing on lineups for these brands often sees BRODYR sharing bills with some of the industry’s biggest and most in demand names, never seeming out of place while rubbing shoulders with artist like Denis Sulta, Yousef, Sam Divine and Mark Fanciulli. BRODYR are also currently residents for nghtwrk, one of Chester’s most popular and forward thinking club brands. Not just DJs, BRODYR have added a very significant production feather to their cap. Calling on all of their experience and musical influences, the duo have honed their skills and taken the time to find their true sound and in November 2015 released their first track, Parallel Universe, on CRAFT Underground. Since then, the brothers have enjoyed a whole range of successful releases and are currently signed to some of the scene’s best respected labels, including Mushroom Smile Records, Be Color Music and Kool Katz Recordings. With a number of local and international bookings already confirmed, as well as a catalog of music awaiting release, it is easy to see why BRODYR have been labeled as “one to watch” for 2019 and beyond. The future is bright for these Welsh brothers, watch this space for more to come.

Wales is a country that has produced its fair share of musical talent over the years. Some of the world's biggest recording artists have been proud to call the small British nation their home and when it comes to electronic music, some of the industry's heaviest hitters and most influential characters have also been produced within the Welsh borders, none more so than dance music royalty Sasha and Paradise and Hot Creations head honcho Jamie Jones. This is our 26th in the Global Mix series and comes courtesy of none other than Dublin's own DART. The Dublin producer’s 4 track EP on the notorious Belfast-based Extended Play imprint has been receiving rave reviews and support from the likes of The Black Madonna, Jamie Jones, Cromby and Denis Sulta to name but a few. He stepped up and delivered a solid hour of no frills dance music, from euphoric house to breakbeat and rave infused club music all mixed together perfectly to keep the momentum going. Tom Trago has long been one of the leading lights of the Dutch electronic music underground; a globe-trotting DJ, producer, live performer and label owner who enjoys nothing more than championing both overlooked gems and fresh sounds from his own country. He once claimed that he felt a physical need to make music every day, and it’s hard to think of anyone whose immersion in music is quite as complete. Although now widely considered to be among the top tier of European DJs, capable of working big rooms, intimate spaces and wild festival crowds, Trago’s rise was built on years honing his craft. Not only is he an integral part of the Dekmantel and Rush Hour crews, but he is also production whizz and the go-to DJ if you need to inject a party with some much-needed energy. In fact, if you had to assemble a team of global party starters, Tom Trago would not only be part of the team, he would be an integral member of the team leadership group. @tomtrago ==================================================== Catch Tom Trago at these upcoming events: Saturday 9th February: Secret Warehouse, Sydney (SOLD OUT) Saturday 9th February: Sugar, Adelaide https://www.facebook.com/events/495647187627981/ Sunday 10th February: Nevermind, Perth https://www.facebook.com/events/621549091595799/ Friday 15th February: 121, Wellington https://www.facebook.com/events/288676511851040/ Saturday 16th February: smalltown w/ Axel Boman, George Fitzgerald & Tom Trago @ Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne https://www.facebook.com/events/1770228636405611/ Saturday 16th February: The Grand Poobah, Tasmania https://www.facebook.com/events/284733705524773/ ==================================================== Upcoming Novel events: Fri, Feb 15th: Novel & Finer Things pres. The Made in Paris sound finds inspiration from techno and tech house with roots firmly planted in deeper shades of electronic music. After years of hard work, she is finally being recognised by media and industry tastemakers as one of country’s top underground DJ’s and producers, and her label Upon Access is slowly building the sort of discography that any label owner aspires too. 2018 has been a big year for the Sydneysider: A DJ tour of the USA; a booking as the official warm-up DJ for Leftfield’s Australian tour; performances at Splendour At The Grass and Output Festival, and an invite to complete a Triple J Residency. Now the producer is limbering up for two massive shows in Melbourne and Sydney alongside internationals Stephan Bodzin, Marcel Dettmann and Dense + Pika. @made-in-paris ==================================================== Catch Made In Paris at these two upcoming events: Saturday, Dec 8th: The Warehouse Collective w/ Stephan Bodzin (Live), Marcel Dettmann, Dense + Pika, Made In Paris @ Australian Technology Park Conference Centre FB event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2155130268031664/ Sunday, Dec 9th: smalltown w/ Stephan Bodzin (Live), Marcel Dettmann, Dense + Pika, Made In Paris @ Catani Gardens, St. Kilda FB event: www.facebook.com/events/970193019851116/ ==================================================== Upcoming Novel events: Sunday, Dec 9th: smalltown w Stephan Bodzin (Live), Marcel Dettmann, Dense + Pika, Made In Paris @ Catani Gardens, St. Kilda www.facebook.com/events/970193019851116/ Sunday, Dec 9th: smalltown Official After Party with Marcel Dettmann @ Chasers Nightclub, South Yarra FB event: www.facebook.com/events/2167927273480042/ Tue, Jan 1st: Let Them Eat Cake NYD with Bicep, Midland, DJ Tennis and more @ Werribee Mansion, Werribee FB event: www.facebook.com/events/250932045562019 @letthemeatcakenyd Sat, Jan 12th: Friends Of Friends with Motor City Drum Ensemble @ Manning Bar, Sydney FB event: www.facebook.com/events/350118145575661/ Sat, Feb 16th: smalltown @ Caulfield Racecourse FB event: www.facebook.com/events/1770228636405611/ Fri, March 8th - Mon, March 12th: Pitch Music & Arts Festival w/ Four Tet, Sven Vath, Denis Sulta and more @ Moyston, VIC FB event: www.facebook.com/events/2073207462735794/ @pitchfestival Sat, March 9th: Days Like This Festival w/ Four Tet, Sven Vath, Denis Sulta and more @ Victoria Park, Sydney FB event: www.facebook.com/events/1834793096636236/ ==================================================== Stay in touch: www.facebook.com/weareNovel/
Constantly swimming in aural pleasures, you’ll either find Adi Toohey controlling the dancefloor from a Sydney DJ booth, presenting Saturday Sunset on FBi Radio, working in record stores or hosting parties with her Rimbombo crew. Now a graduate headliner, Toohey carved a name opening for the likes of Hunee, Young Marco, Bicep and The Black Madonna, playing Dark Mofo, Subsonic and Splendour in the Grass festivals and for interstate crews Club Coco, Lucid and A Love Supreme. With a musical CV like that Adi seemed a natural choice to warm up the dance floor for our inaugural B3 event with Gerd Janson, Dj Koze and Charlotte de Witte. As expected, she delivered, and played a warm and inviting two hours which set the scene for an amazing night of music. We are very pleased to release Adi’s set from that night, and we are confident that this might just be your new favourite mix. @aditoohey ==================================================== Upcoming Novel events: Friday, Nov 23rd: Novel x Other People Pres. In Hour 1 we welcome back Taraval celebrating the release of his new EP 'Aardvark', which is out on Four Tet's Text Records today. The title track has been whipping festivals and dance floors into a frenzy all summer long when played by the likes of Four Tet, Daphni, Floating Points amongst others, getting many Track ID requests and features in this mix. The San Francisco based producer also has a background as a band member in Caribou. He told us; "Always exciting to get to mix for Solid Steel. This one features a lot of music I’ve discovered and loved in 2018, plus a couple of tracks from my Aardvark EP on Text Records out on Oct 19. I recorded this live at Crowbar Corner studios, a new and very inspiring place in San Francisco I share with a bunch of artists. It starts off in an aquatic groove then shifts into some psych-y techno then dissolves into some American drones and tones old and new." He's held a residency for the past 6 years at Belfast’s legendary Shine and shows in the past year at the likes of Panorama Bar, Robert Johnson, The Warehouse Project & Boiler room. His latest EP Futurola is the first release on Denis Sulta’s new Sulta Selects sub label Silver Service, which has been gaining a lot of International support and his next release 'Retribution' is coming out on Feel My Bicep in November. He had this to say; "Big big honour to be able to contribute to this series! I found out about this quite last minute with not much time to prepare, so I decided to pull out some of my favourites i've been playing over the last year, I hope you enjoy it!"

Newbridge native Niall D'arcy, AKA DJ Deece has risen rapidly through the ranks of the Irish house and disco scene in recent years, as well as taking the international leap with multiple gigs across the water in the UK. The beginning of June saw Deece take on a Boiler Room set at AVA Festival in Belfast, Boiler Room's self proclaimed favourite location in the world, alongside the likes of Denis Sulta, Ejeca and Or:la. D'arcy has also had a very successful year running his Deece Series shows with the likes of Brame & Hamo and Jordan headlining the shows. The Deece Series also hosted the rave in the woods on the Sunday of Electric Picnic, with Deece himself closing out the stage. The artist has now given us a track from his forthcoming EP Disco Delights #001 to premiere on Four Four. Listen exclusively to 'I Can't Be You' here.

John arrived at this week's Quietus Hour recording with a bag of coffee so high-end it came in a packaging made of two eco-friendly materials. With that in mind, we decided to go for a two coffee show and opened with a pair of appropriately momentous bangers by Sex Swing and Robert Hood's Floorplan. OOOF! As well as more new music by Jenny Hval, Denis Sulta and The Invisible we've got a classic overlooked track by The Units, some Family Atlantica and some Adrian Sherwood, not to mention our usual look at the important music news of the day and The Persuader. Plus, Stone Roses fans - a real treat for you in an exclusive live clip from their recent surprise show in Halifax.
