Sahana Srinivasan is an actor and comedian. They are currently appearing in Amazon's new family comedy, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh. Following the newly emigrated Pradeep family as they retell (often through conflicting versions!) the story of their first few humorous months adjusting from Indian to American culture from an interrogation room. Sahana stars as the oldest and most rebellious child, daughter ‘Bahnu', who has found herself instantly drawn to her neighbor next door – one of the many ways her family finds themselves personally and professionally intertwined with the polar opposite family across the street. Naveen Andrews, Sindhu Vee, Ashwin Sakthivel, Arjun Sriram, Megan Hilty, Ethan Suplee, Pete Holmes and Nicholas Hamilton also star. Directed and EP'd by Michael Showalter and inspired by the personal experiences of Emmy-nominated creator Vijal Patel. Sahana is best known for hosting the science focused Netflix docuseries, BRAINCHILD, produced by Pharrell Williams in 2018, Sahana has since recurred on HBO's INSECURE, Apple TV+'s FOR ALL MANKIND and on Freeform's GROWN-ISH. On the comedy side, Sahana is known for their characters and one-liners about their cultural identity and life experiences, having been picked as one of Just For Laughs' New Faces of Comedy in 2023. We chat about their new show The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, comedy & Just For Laughs, expectations and hope, nickelodeon pilots that don't go ahead, taking a break from stand up, weight lifting plus plenty more. Drawing on a decade of fieldwork in the borderlands of northern Bangladesh and eastern India, A Thousand Tiny Cuts: Mobility and Security Across the Bangladesh-India Borderlands (U California Press, 2023) chronicles the slow transformation of a connected region into national borderlands and shows the foundational place of gender and sexuality in the meaning and management of threat in relation to mobility. It recasts a singular focus on border fences and border crossings to show, instead, that bordering is an expansive and accumulative reordering of relations of value. Devaluations--of agrarian land and crops, borderland youth undesirable as brides and grooms in their respective national hinterlands, disconnection of regional infrastructures, and social and physical geographies disordered by surveillance--proliferate as the costs of militarization across this ostensibly "friendly" border. Through a textured ethnography of the gendered political economy of mobility across a postcolonial borderlands in South Asia, this ambitious book challenges anthropological understanding of the violence of bordering, migration and citizenship, and transnational inequalities that are based on Euro-American borders and security regimes. This week, The Musafir Stories speaks with Sahana Kulur, an educator, architect, traveler and blogger at http://www.vacaywork.com as she takes us to the erstwhile capital of the Adil Shahi sultanate - Bijapur! Today's destination: Bijapur or Vijayapura, Karnataka Nearest Airport: Goa International Airport (GOI) Nearest Railway Station: Vijayapura/Bijapur Station (BJP) Prerequisites - N/A Packing - Good walking shoes, carry extra water as it can get hot during the day, sunglasses and caps/hats Time of the year - September - Feb Length of the itinerary: 2 days Itinerary Highlights: We start the conversation with a quick chat about the very diverse and interesting history and backstory of the Adil Shahi sultanate and its origins - on how a young prince from Turkey was sold to a merchant and eventually ended up in the Deccan region after growing up in Persia. Set up by Yusuf Adil Shah, the Adil Shahi sultanate broke away from the Bahamani Sultanate after constant conflicts with the Vijayanagara empire. Bijapur served as the capital of the Adil Shahi sultanate. The Gol Gumbaz is the most prominent landmark of the capital and is the mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah who ruled in the 17th century. It is also the second largest dome in the world without any reinforcement, second only to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is also the biggest domed structure in India and is currently on the tentative list of UNESCO world heritage sites. Sahana shares her experience of visiting the Gol Gumbaz at sunrise, the views from the terrace, the optical illusion and the famous whispering gallery. Next up, we make a pitstop at Jama masjid, one of mosques in the vicinity with quaint architecture and interesting stories from the siege of Aurangazeb in 1686. One of the other interesting monuments is the unfinished Baara Kaman or the 12 arches. It was kicked off by the son of Ali Adil Shah II, but was never completed as he was killed before its completion. It is believed that the construction was stopped by his father fearing that the structure could eclipse the Gol Gumbaz. Another monument of interest is the Ibrahim Rouza built as a mausoleum for Ibrahim Adil Shah and his wife. It consists of a beautiful structure along with a mosque. One of the more recent hindu structures of Bijapur or Vijaypura is the Shiva statue at the Shivagiri park. It is one of the largest Shiva statues in India and was inaugurated in 2006. The other pit stops include a visit to the popular Khaanavali restaurants of North Karnataka that are prominent in the Jowar belt of the state. Sahana talks about Jowar rottis, brinjal curries as well as a variety of other mouth watering dishes from the state. Finally we end the trip with a visit to the Shastri market for pulses and spices, one of the biggest markets in Bijapur and some of its popular offerings. Some other monuments that could not be covered on the podcast include Asar Mahal, Gagan Mahal to name a few. Episode 22 of Monali & Meena Narayanaswami's talk show, "101 Chai Chats".
In Episode 80, Jessica Kumar and Mallika Thoppay take on colorism in South Asian communities. Mallika shares about her activism and how colorism affects everyone and hurts us all. She works with children in helping them to accept others as they are and stand up for themselves if they are being discriminated against. She authored "Unfair and Lovely" to combat colorism in India. The book tackles colorism and is an effort to nip this social issue in the bud. It chronicles the journey of Sahana, who is a middle school girl. She and her sister, Surabhi, move to a new city and start attending school there. Both of them aspire to succeed at their new school, academically and socially, hoping to make new friends, participate in extracurricular activities etc.. Sahana happens to be darker skinned than Surabhi. The book delves into how the sisters' journeys are different, and how Sahana has to overcome the obstacles she faces. The author's hope is that the book teaches kids to accept everyone, regardless of physical appearance, and to stand up for themselves when the situation demands it. Meet Sahana Shiggaon, a medical student graduating from the University of Missouri Kansas City- School of Medicine's 6 YR combined BA/MD program. She talks about the unique challenges of being in an accelerated program and how she found her "groove". Sahana talks about suffering from imposter syndrome and overcoming it. She talks about feeling alone and isolated as one of the few students who was out fo state and learning to start from scratch as far as building her social circle. Medical schools need to provide opportunities to socialize and speak to other students so one can open up, not feel isolated and learn to work together in a collaborative environment. She believes that being at a school where her concerns were addressed and "listened to" really helped in feeling welcome and helped her succeed. Her pearls for us: Being vulnerable is normal Don't sweat the small stuff Celebrate yourself and your accomplishments even if they feel small. Validate yourself! Build your confidence and believe in yourselves. We are all capable since we have landed in these places. Invest in yourself and try to find other things that give you joy. Take up a hobby early on.
Sahana gives a big middle finger to the advice "Fake it until you make it".

How do border policing and violence intersect with gender and sexuality to affect border communities? Today's guest, Dr. Sahana Ghosh, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the National University of Singapore, tells us about her research on the borderlands of India and Bangladesh. She describes how she transitioned from studying literature to anthropology, and from doing social work with female victims of human trafficking along the border to researching the lives of those who live along the border. She explains how her ethnographic research came to focus on many different social spaces and people—courts, border police, and communities on both sides of the border—describing specifically the ways the border's militarization affected both her research and the lives of those who experienced it. Finally, she discusses her use of visual anthropological perspectives, and how the camera and its use by her interlocutors became an object of ethnographic analysis. Alex Diamond is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at the University of Texas, Austin. Sneha Annavarapu is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago. Learn more about your ad choices. Some say we don't actually have a word for it yet. We discuss the challenges that Gen Z particularly is facing with isolation, anxiety, depression, and uncertainty with two ambitious women who are college students and the founders of Beyond Cancer. Our guests include Kaamya M.K. and Sahana Lothumalla. Kaamya is a sophomore Pre-Law student at Southern Methodist University studying Finance and Human Rights on the Public Policy track. She is also a member of the Healthcare and Human Rights Committee. Sahana is a premedical student studying neuroscience at the University of Michigan. The field of oncology fascinates her and Beyond Cancer is her avenue of deepening my knowledge as a student and raising awareness to her community as a teacher. Vaishnavas sing these songs to bring peace, prosperity and Divine Grace. Andal assumes the guise of a cowherd girl in these 30 verses. Andal appears intent upon performing a particular religious vow to marry the Lord, thereby obtain His everlasting company, and inviting all her girl-friends to join her. Towards the end we learn that she did not actually perform a religious rite; but is simply praying to be granted the service of the Lord for eternity. She yearns for everlasting happiness and service of the Lord. Translation By Dr. V.K.S.N. Raghavan (Now the young gOpis try to wake up the dhivya dampathis, Nappinnai PirAtti and Lord KrishNA). As the cluster of lamps are glowing beside , Oh Lord KrishNA , You are lying on the very soft (silky ) bed , on the ivory cot with Your broad chest resting on the bosom of Sri Nappinnai , who is adorned with blossome d bunches of flowers on Her tresses. (KrishNA ! even if You are unable to get up ) may You , atleast open Your mouth. (Now turning to Nappinnai) Oh Young Lady with black and wide eyes ( adorned with collyrium) ! We think that You won't allow Your Lord to wake up from sleep even if it is late ( or at any time); that is because You can not bear the separation from Him even for a shortwhile. However, Oh Young lady , neither it is just on Your part ( to keep the Lord only for Yourself) , nor does it befit Your unbounded Mercy ! (na Saasthram naiva cha Krama: according to JananyAcchAr Swamy).
