Ep. Br#002 The 2017 elections were lauded for their cognizance of the historically bleak presence of women in the political sphere of Nepal, to overcome this, the State mandated a Quota reserve of 40.4% of all nominee seats for women. The policy affirmed the presence and participation of Nepali women in politics, as approximately 14,000 women were elected into different positions in the Nepali Government. In this episode of The Brief: PEI colleague Khushi Hang sits with Sumina Rai Karki to discuss the latest paper she co-authored, “Beyond Capacity”. As the tenure of the first set of elected officials in this particular inclusion quota comes to an end, Sumina Rai Karki et al. gauge the effectiveness of the affirmative action policies for women against the backdrop of Nepali patriarchal psycho-social contexts in their paper “Beyond Capacity”. The two explore what gendered implications exist in the informal or unofficial aspects of Nepali elections that hinder women's chances at merit-based political opportunities during candidacy and their agency once they assume office. Sumina shares their findings on the challenges that limit the supply of politically ambitious women and signals the need for smarter policy interventions from the State and Development Partners that address the barriers that prevent women from fulfilling the space and responsibilities of the quota. Sumina Karki is a development professional and researcher with ten years of experience in gender equity, social inclusion, governance, and peacebuilding. Currently, she is the Assistant Director of Social Development Programs at the Asia Foundation Nepal office. She is a founding member of Chaukath, a feminist collective that organized the Vote for Women Campaign and several feminist reading sessions along with March as Women in collaboration with Martin Chautari.

James, originally from Long Island, NY, received his B.A. from the University of Virginia in May of 2000, after which he joined Bank of America as a Commercial Paper Trader. Due to his uncanny ability to identify properties and situations that are “ripe for development,” James founded J.S. & Associates, Inc. in 2002, which is also central to his vision of economic development and self-sufficiency for families in the greater Charlotte area. Since relocating to Charlotte, James has been making a name for himself in real estate development with a particular focus on the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in The Queen City. After years in finance with Bank of America, he joined Helen Adams Realty because it shares his commitment to customer service, authenticity, and reliability. James strengths are unlimited drive and creativity, very strong interpersonal skills, a wealth of investment knowledge, a thorough understanding of real estate growth trends in and around Charlotte, and most importantly, absolute integrity. Through JSA, he has acquired 30 single-family homes and two apartment complexes. One of those apartment complexes is Kingston Apartments, a 35-unit complex that sits on over 4 acres, just minutes from both the south end and uptown and Sandhust Apartments that sits on 13+ acres. He has also used JSA to improve neighborhoods by restoring dilapidated homes or even tearing them down with the purpose of constructing brand new homes in their place. JSA has also allowed him to educate other investors and new homeowners through a quarterly web-based newsletter he produces on all aspects of investing in real estate in smart, sensible ways. As CEO of JSA, James also delivers free investment seminars that educate folks on buying and keeping properties. James also started in 2014 and 2015 his development and construction company called J.S. & Son's Construction Company, LLC. James has his unlimited commercial and residential General Contracting License. He primarily focuses on building Assisted Living Communities specializing in Alzheimer's and Dementia. Host Nico Johnson takes some time today in this first Question and Answer episode to respond to some questions received from the audience the past few weeks.   There are a lot of requests for whether the show will ever be in Spanish.  The short answer is "maybe" and "it depends".  Nico unpacks it a bit further. In our inaugural episode, there was quite a bit of data and market trend info shared between Nico and Adam James, and many really enjoyed this style approach for the show.  We'll definitely be bringing more of this back, but Adam is moving on from his role at GTM, so the recordings have necessarily been put on the back burner as he makes this transition. Conferences are an important way to gain exposure to the players in any specific region, and Latin America is no different.  Nico's been to, and spoken at most of the regional conferences, and takes some time here to highlight what he sees working. A common hurdle for someone entering into a new market is determining where and with whom they should partner. Nico shares some guidance on how you might go about making that decision. Finally, LACSA has been mentioned a few times on the 'cast, so Nico takes a moment to explain the reasoning behind it here. First up, some sad news. Wilson Pickett, best-known for hits "In the Midnight Hour" & "Mustang Sally", died of a heart attack yesterday at just 64 years young. Mike and Al share some personal memories of his work. Spotlight: Al discusses the new Macintosh computers with the Intel chip inside and it's compatibility with timing-based applications (MIDI, audio, video, etc.). The new computers are using a translation program called Rosetta to run any application that's not been updated to run on the Intel processor. Rosetta does not handle timing-based applications very well and is not ready to function as a media production platform until updates of the applications are available. Even Apple's own pro media apps (Final Cut, Soundtrack, Logic, etc.) won't run on this new machine yet. Updates of these pro apps should be available after March. In the meantime, if you're an Ableton Live user, you're good to go with the new Intel Macs! Version 5.2 was just released and ready to run on this new platform.
