Orlaith Heaney, from County Mayo, and a former student at Mount Saint Michael Secondary School, has been awarded a prestigious €24,000 scholarship from Trane Technologies Thermoking. This scholarship, designated for students in Teen-Turn, will provide Orlaith with €6,000 annually over the course of her four-year engineering degree at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Galway City. Orlaith, a former student at Mount Saint Michael Secondary School, has been engaged with Teen-Turn since she was in first year. She was introduced to Teen-Turn's afterschool program by a friend. Orlaith had many successful projects during her years of attendance at the afterschool programs participating in Technovation, Scifest and BT Young scientist. Most recently she was honoured with a National Garda Community Safety Award. Orlaith progressed to attending Teen-Turn PLUS Saturday clubs, which deliver advanced learning in subjects that are not universally offered in all-girls' secondary schools in Ireland, providing participants with foundational skills critical for engineering and technology courses at the university level. It was through Orlaith's participation in Teen-Turn's PLUS program that she discovered a strong passion for engineering, with a particular interest in robotics, automation and manufacturing engineering. Securing a 'Teen-Turnship', a 2 week summer work placement in Trane Technologies in Galway in the summer of 5th year further cemented Orlaith's desire to study Engineering. Orlaith applied to the common engineering programme at ATU Galway City, which will allow her to experience various branches of engineering in her first year before deciding on her specialisation. Orlaith says "Teen-Turn gave me opportunities I never would have had, from coding to building robots and learning from real engineers. These experiences showed me that engineering is where I want to be and I am excited to bring what I have learned into my studies at ATU. Teen-Turn's programs helped me discover my love for robotics and automation and I am eager to explore all branches of engineering in my first year at ATU. I cannot wait to dive into a career where I can make a real impact." The Trane Technologies scholarship is designed to provide financial support to young women like Orlaith and also to offer them access to invaluable professional resources. Scholarship recipients will benefit from mentorship and guidance from engineering experts throughout their studies and will have the opportunity to complete co-op rotations at the state-of-the-art Thermo King facility in Galway. This unique combination of financial assistance and professional exposure is intended to reduce financial and academic barriers, empowering scholarship recipients to excel in their STEM careers. This initiative aligns closely with Trane Technologies' "Sustainable Futures" Global Corporate Strategy, which aims to increase access to STEM education and careers for underrepresented groups. By empowering talented young women like Orlaith, Trane Technologies hopes to inspire future leaders who will drive innovation in engineering and make a positive impact on our world. The UN's big climate change conference, COP29, starts Nov. 11 in Baku, Azerbaijan. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we're exploring technology solutions for the low-carbon transition, including in developing countries. We talk with Vaishali Sinha, Co-founder and Chairperson of Sustainability at ReNew, a decarbonization solutions company deploying renewables and other low-carbon technologies in India. "A global mindset is what is required in some of these very new and emerging technologies — and we must work together to be able to solve for it," Vaishali tells us. We also talk with Holly Paeper, President of the Commercial HVAC Americas business at Trane Technologies, a building technology and energy solutions company. Holly says tackling Scope 3 indirect supply chain emissions is the "next frontier" for Trane Technologies and other companies working in the built environment. "The challenge is huge in the built environment," she says. "The good news is there's technology that exists today to change that, and we're really starting to see more and more customer demand for those solutions." We also sit down with Garrett Quinn, Chief Sustainability Officer at Smurfit Westrock, a sustainable paper and packaging company with operations in dozens of countries. Garrett describes some of the ways the company is looking to lower its emissions. We talked with today's guests on the sidelines of The Nest Climate Campus, where ESG Insider was an official podcast during Climate Week NYC. At Climate Week NYC 2024, many conversations focused on improving public understanding of climate change — also known as climate literacy. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast we explore how increasing climate literacy can help prepare the future workforce for the green job opportunities that will come with the low-carbon transition. We sit down on the sidelines of The Nest Climate Campus with Kathleen Rogers, President of Earthday.org. This is a nonprofit that grew out of the first Earth Day in 1970 and has a goal of raising public awareness about environmental issues. We also talk with Frank Niepold, Senior Climate Education Coordinator at the Climate Program Office of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Frank co-authored a new interagency climate literacy guide for educators, communicators, and decisionmakers. To understand how culture can help educate about climate change, we speak to AY Young, a United Nations Young Leader who uses his music to spread awareness about sustainability issues including the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. And we hear how some companies are approaching the topic in interviews with Gayle Schueller, Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer at technology and manufacturing company 3M; and Holly Paeper, President of the Commercial HVAC Americas business at Trane Technologies, a building technology and energy solutions company. This is Matt Reustle. Today we venture into the world of HVAC to break down Trane Technologies. Now, it's not often that I come across an industrial company with a $50 billion market cap that I just hadn't heard of. So when our guest today, Brett Larson, investor at NZS Capital, suggested Trane, it was as easy of a 'yes' as they come. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is James Scruggs. As young adult, James thought stocks were the key to accumulating wealth and making a lot of money. He invested his first bonus in telecom stocks, at just the wrong time and sadly lost everything. This experience shattered James, as he always wanted to be different from his parents, who, James tells us, aren't savers. Seeking advice, he turned to a friend who recommended the book "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki. Reading this book changed James' life and helped shape him into who he is today. James is the CEO and President of Kingdom Development Partners and J.S. & Son's Construction Company, LLC. A native of Long Island, NY but a Charlottean at heart. James has over two decades in real estate development, construction, and brokerage after leaving a successful career as a Bond trader. He has developed, built, owned, and operated a portfolio of income producing single-family, multifamily, and assisted living communities. James is a licensed real estate broker, and general contractor in the state of North Carolina. He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia in 2000 and a Master of Science in Real Estate from the UNC-Charlotte where he was the recipient of the distinguished Childress Klein fellowship. After graduation he joined Bank of America as a Commercial Paper Trader. James founded J.S. & Associates, Inc. (JSA) in 2002, which is central to his vision of economic development and self-sufficiency for families in the greater Charlotte area. Since relocating to Charlotte, James has been making a name for himself in real estate development with a particular focus on the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in The Queen City. After years in finance with Bank of America, he joined Helen Adams Realty because it shares his commitment to customer service, authenticity, and reliability. James' strengths are unlimited drive and creativity, very strong interpersonal skills, a wealth of investment knowledge, a thorough understanding of real estate growth trends in and around Charlotte, and most importantly, unwavering integrity. Through JSA, he has acquired 30 single-family homes and two apartment complexes. He has also used JSA to improve neighborhoods by restoring dilapidated homes or even tearing them down in order to construct brand new homes in their place. JSA has also allowed him to educate other investors and new homeowners through a quarterly web-based newsletter he produces on all aspects of investing in real estate in smart, sensible ways. As CEO of JSA, James also delivers free investment seminars that educate folks on buying and keeping properties. James is married to his gorgeous wife Makila who is the Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Trane Technologies. James has an amazing 12-year-old son named Jaden and an eight-year-old son named Malachi. After a successful seven-year career in the financial banking industry, he made a major life and career change by committing his life to serving those with Alzheimer's Disease. He is the founder and former president of Unlimited Possibilities, a unique ministry dedicated to changing the way elders are cared for today and in the future. A driving influence of his life change was a book called “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. It demonstrated that life is essentially about the legacy you leave behind and how you affect others, in business and personally. Helping others have the ability to live a life with dignity, compassion and purpose are the signature of his communities that he has created for older adults. He plans to continue this mission and offer the best care for seniors and older adults with Alzheimer's and dementia.
The guest this week on The CMO Podcast is Carrie Ruddy, the Senior Vice President, Chief Communications & Marketing Officer of Trane Technologies–a 17 billion dollar by sales company focused on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. But this is no ordinary HVAC company–they are 100% focused on helping solve the climate change crisis through innovative new products and services. Trane's CEO attributes their strong business results to “a focused execution of our purpose driven strategy.” We'll talk about that.Carrie first discovered her passion for communications at the non-profit United Way, after completing her Bachelors at Colgate University, majoring in English and Philosophy. From there she made stops in several industries, including financial services and grocery/retail, before joining manufacturer Ingersoll Rand in 2014. In 2020 the tools business of Ingersoll Rand was spun off, and the remaining company was named Trane Technologies. In January 2022 Carrie was named Chief Communications and Marketing Officer of Trane Technologies. Recorded at the Next Gen CMO Academy at Deloitte University, during a Texas heatwave, (it was 105 degrees!) It's only fitting that Carrie joined Jim in the crisp AC for her first ever podcast interview. Scott Tew is the leader of the Center for Energy Efficiency & Sustainability at Trane Technologies (CEES) and is responsible for forward-looking sustainability initiatives aimed at transitioning to more efficient and climate-friendly solutions and minimizing resource use within company facilities. He serves as a thought leader in linking public policy, economic impacts and a value-stream approach to sustainability. His efforts have led to the development of world-class initiatives, including introduction of the company's comprehensive 2030 Sustainability Commitments with the largest customer-facing corporate commitment to combat climate change with the Gigaton Challenge; and as a pioneer in integrated reporting. Scott holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in environmental science and ecology from Livingston University. He serves on the Advisory Council of the Corporate Eco Forum; as the board chair of the World Environment Center; and as the chair of the US Business Council for Sustainable Development (USBCSD). Scott Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The scope of work at Trane Technologies Untapped opportunities to reduce emissions though the built environment and food systems Smart buildings and using technology to improve efficiencies Trane Technologies value stream-focused 2030 commitments Working with external advisors on science-based targets Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Scott's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? The power of commitments and the power of public goals; I can never underestimate the power of that. Helping leadership get behind a public commitment is a huge game changer. If you're with a company where that hasn't happened yet, that needs to be the front and center of your focus. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I believe we're about to move into a new era of regenerative thinking. I think attaching sustainability to a company's purpose like we did at Trane Technologies was what was needed to get us to where we are today. There are some great companies out there thinking “how do we actually have a regenerative mantra so that we actually can redo anything bad from the past and think very differently about solutions in the future?” That means that we are more open to innovation and partnerships than ever before, so that has me very excited. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability professionals read? I have to be selfish on this one; After Cooling is one by Eric Dean Wilson. That is a really interesting one because it talks about the cost of comfort to the world, which is exactly the problem that my company is trying to solve. In a world where we have an increasing number of heat waves and heat domes, it might be time for us all to step back and think about how cooling is delivered and what we should do differently in the future. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? There are a few outside organizations that I get a lot of value out of hearing from other practitioners. For your listeners out there, I think you really should explore groups where you can be amongst your peers to find out how they're accomplishing whatever they're accomplishing. I get a lot of value from chatting either one-on-one or hearing a presentation of practitioners of how something worked in their company. Those are the things that I bring back to apply within my company, and I can point to lots of examples of that through the years. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Trane Technologies? You can go to tranetechnologies.com and the opening page will have a link to our sustainability progress. My group is featured with its own section of the website including my email address. I'm always happy to engage with anyone who might have questions or want to follow up.
The Nasdaq composite led for the day with a move above its 50-day moving average but the breadth still has a ways to go. Tesla jumped above its 50-day line on an analyst upgrade, Meta joined it with a move above its 50-day on reports of a ChatGPT rival and Trane Technologies broke out to all-time highs.

Workforce innovation is a true calling for Amy Volz of Trane Technologies. It allows her to combine her passion for marketing and brand strategy with her love for helping to unlock the potential of women and create opportunity for all.
Alec Crawford welcomed Scott to the Stay Podcast to discuss sustainability, technology, artificial intelligence, and their impact around the world. Scott has had a long career in the environmental field, beginning with working as an environmental scientist for a chemical company, to managing environmental issues globally, and finally joining Trane Technologies to help work in refrigerants. Scott recently attended Davos and his takeaway was that every sector of the economy needed to help move towards a better future with improved sustainable practices and reduced emissions is now at the table. The conversation between the interviewer and the sustainability leader revolves around the concept of sustainability and how it is integral to the success of the company. The sustainability leader defines sustainability as being about who a company wants to be, and how they can continuously improve. Train Technologies has two major facets: HVAC systems and transport refrigeration. The sustainability leader is responsible for leading sustainability efforts and running the Center for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability. Sustainability is not just about environmental efforts, but is also about social work, how employees are treated, and the expectations of suppliers. Sustainability is about making sure the company is positioned for success in the future. Scott, the Sustainability Officer at Trane Technologies, discussed his team's role in designing products for the future and how sustainability is now interwoven with the purpose of the company. He highlighted their program called Operation Possible which encourages employees to think of ways to solve big societal issues, such as increasing access to fresh food. He also discussed his interactions with the CEO and the board, emphasizing that for companies that see sustainability as their business, the CEO, board, and leadership team are fully engaged on all sustainability efforts on a daily basis. Trane Technologies is serious about its commitments to reduce emissions, increase diversity and provide opportunity for all. These commitments are attached to the CEO and manager's compensation, showing how serious the company is. The board has also readjusted expectations, linking progress to ESG issues. The company has set leading commitments around gender parity, investing in STEM education and allowing employees to volunteer in their local communities. Employees are given paid time off to volunteer and the company matches their time with contributions to the organisations.Timestamps0:00:01Scott Discusses Sustainability and Artificial Intelligence on the Stay Podcast0:02:34Discussion on Sustainability and Trane Technologies' Role in the Economy0:07:18Sustainability Governance and Interactions with the CEO and Board at Trane Technologies0:12:40Trane Technologies' Commitment to Emissions Reduction, Diversity, and Community Engagement0:15:35Trane Establishing the Firm's Sustainability Goals Through an Inclusive Global Process0:17:24Exploring Trane Technologies' Sustainability Strategy and Commitment to Transparency0:19:12Sustainability and ESG Disclosure Gaps Between the US and Europe0:21:09Exploring the Benefits of Next Generation Heat Pump Technologies0:25:30Examining Trade-Offs in Sustainability and Energy Efficiency During a Recession0:26:57Conversation on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Addressing Societal Issues0:29:11Advice for New Chief Sustainability Officers: Materiality Assessments and Bold Public Commitments0:32:15Conversation with Sustainability Leader on Net Positive Impact and Engaging Employees0:33:54Interview with Scott Tew of Trane Technologies on Climate Change SolutionsHighlightsThis has becomes a North Star for a new sustainability...

“There's a few reasons why a building owner might want to electrify their building and get heat pumps. One is that it is a better experience for the people who are living in those units. It's really, really quiet. it's healthier, it's safer…and then secondly, there should be less maintenance cost over time. Just having one system that's really efficient.” Lauren Salz on Electric Ladies Podcast Heat pumps are suddenly getting a spotlight. Between big financial incentives for them in the new U.S. Inflation Reduction Act's climate provisions, Germany's ramp up of these pumps to help manage the cold winter as Germany stops using Russian oil and gas, and even Consumer Reports doing a "heat pumps buying guide," you might wonder what heat pumps are and how they can help mitigate climate change. Enter Lauren Salz, Co-Founder and CEO of Sealed, an innovative heat pump company that helps homeowners reduce their energy bills. Listen to Lauren explain how these work and more in this engaging conversation with host Joan Michelson on Electric Ladies Podcast. You'll hear: How heat pumps work, including how they reduce energy bills. What financial incentives are out there to reduce the cost of installing heat pumps in your home or apartment building or commercial building. How Sealed works to help homeowners and property managers find the right heat and air conditioning systems for their budget and buildings (HVACs), including questions to ask.
