Gopal Rajegowda joined us on The Built World Podcast for a Negroni and a fascinating conversation about his stellar career with Related Companies. As a first-generation Indian-American, Gopal's journey began in a New York City suburb before taking him to Cornell University. Casting an eye toward the frantic vertical urbanization of Toronto, Condoland: The Planning, Design, and Development of Toronto's CityPlace (UBC, 2023) traces the forty-year history of the city's largest residential megaproject. James T. White and John Punter summarize the tools used to shape Toronto's built environment and critically explore the underlying political economy of planning and real estate development in the city. Using detailed field studies, interviews with key actors, archival research, and with nearly two hundred illustrations, White and Punter reveal how a promise to reproduce Vancouverism, a celebrated model of Canadian urban development, unravelled under an alarmingly flexible approach to planning and design that is acquiescent to the demands of a rapacious development industry. Through a uniquely design-focused evaluation of a phenomenon increasingly known as “condo-ism,” Condoland raises key questions about the sustainability and long-term resilience of city planning. James T. White is a professor of planning and urban design at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and deputy director of the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence. His published work focuses on how the design of the built environment is shaped by policy, regulation, and the market in both UK and Canadian contexts. This interview was conducted by Timi Koyejo, a graduate student in urban studies at the University of Vienna. He has worked professionally as a researcher at the University of Chicago and as an urban policy advisor to the City of Chicago. Learn more about your ad choices. Imagine having the chance to secure a piece of the Toronto skyline for under $600k? This is your rare opportunity to own a condo in the heart of downtown Toronto that has a very unique benefit to other condos. As a 2nd floor unit, you have the option of using stairs OR elevators on a daily basis. Those who live on the high floors of a condo may feel like they have a better unit, they are stuck if they elevators are not working. Also, its a lot tougher for EMS, Police and Fire to get there the higher you are. This is the reason you need to consider this space. It is a distinct pleasure to introduce you to today's guest. Kathryn Dzikowicz is a small business owner in the fitness industry right here in Manitoba and she has quite a story to tell. Kathryn has been involved in the fitness industry for the past 30 years. Kathryn began her career in Workplace Health and Wellness with Canadian National Railway, she has served on the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Runner's Association, she's a founding member of the Winnipeg Workplace Wellness Alliance and she currently donates to the Joy Smith Foundation annually through an International Women's Day event. She has competed in the Manitoba Bodybuilding Championships in the past, completed 3 full marathons, managed the Urban Wellness Centre in Cityplace for years and was awarded Fitness Leader of the Year with the Manitoba Fitness Council as well. In January of 2017, Kathryn's dream of opening her own fitness studio became a reality. Blue Sky Fitness and Health Coaching Studio opened it's doors in January of 2017. Of course, in March of 2020 everything changed and during Covid, she has worked SO hard to continually adapt and adjust by moving online and continuing to create community. I visited with Kathryn over Zoom in March of 2021, and when you listen – you'll hear that her life's journey goes far beyond sport. Kathryn Dzikowicz, is more than a physical trainer to her clients, she is a friend, a colleague, and someone who truly cares about the wellness of all those around her. That truly makes her a “hero in our midst”. What a story of perseverance, strength and putting the care of others first – in every area of her life. We hope you enjoy her story.

The wisdom he brings from success in a market where many others fail is invaluable. Whether you are new or tuning into the show for the first time, I know you'll find great value in today's program. Scott founded the Urban Pacific Group of Companies in 2000. Since then his company has brought over 1700 units of affordable housing to communities throughout the western USA. The Choppin family has been in real estate development in Long Beach since 1960, which includes highlights such as the development of the Long Beach World Trade Center and the 293-unit CityPlace residential development in downtown Long Beach. Scott is an innovator in the fields of urban housing, mixed use projects, and affordable/middle income housing communities throughout the Western United States. Main Points: Scott, while many investors are fleeing Southern CA because of the high cost of living and tightening regulations, you've found a business development that works. In fact, you customarily deliver a 29% IRR to your investors. What is your secret to success in a state where many others have fled? You do not limit your development to Southern CA but you do focus on middle-income workforce housing. Why the middle-income housing sector? What are three of the most important factors that passive investors should focus on in offering memorandums? What are the risks to passive investors investing in Urban town House (UTH) infill development? How has workforce housing faired through the pandemic? In this episode, Jeff sits down with Philip Baker, CEO of Staplegun, a full service advertising agency with its headquarters in downtown Oklahoma City. We begin by hearing the story of how Philip and his business partner, Brent McCutchen, started Staplegun in their home offices and then continue with him sharing some stories from his earlier life and about how he got started in the advertising business. He shares some stories about how different the advertising business was when he started and then reflects about how much things have changed in the business. Philip then talks about the importance of planning and in developing a deeper overall understanding in order to create an effective strategy as in the earlier years of his career before the advent of computer technology, there was an inherent need to take time to plan the work and to think more deeply before starting a project. He talks about how they embrace and practice the importance of proper and careful planning on all client projects at Staplegun. As the conversation continues, Philip shares his perspective on how all of the changes in the media landscape have impacted how business, advertising, and public relations are done these days. He speaks to the importance of "being relevant when relevancy is needed and timeliness when timeliness is needed" and striking a balance between deep, creative thought and careful planning with the ability to be nimble and to react quickly when it is called for. We then transition into a discussion about the thought that went into planning their current space on the 19th and 20th Floor of the City Place building in downtown Oklahoma City and how it was centered around a focus on creating a workplace that portrays who they are and also helps them to attract and retain the best talent. Philip then shares some of the lessons that they have learned through the process of designing and working within their office space. As the interview wraps up, Philip shares his perspective on the big picture regarding the changes that we are seeing in the economy and how it is affecting the overall media landscape as well as some of his thoughts on the continued growth and the positive things here in Oklahoma City with so many exciting developments that have happened recently and that are on the horizon. He then speaks about how they try to honor and live the traditional values of keeping their promises and empowering their employees by having a supportive work environment that also challenges them to continue to improve and to do their best. They also put a considerable amount of focus on encouraging their employees to get involved and to be a part of the community, to give back, and to help out in several very meaningful ways. That’s one in every 200 Americans living with one of these debilitating, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. The fastest growing patient population is children under the age of 18. Crohn's disease may affects anywhere along the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Patients can be diagnosed at any age, but are most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 35. Many patients experience numerous hospitalizations.
