Paychecks and perks are no longer enough for retention.MOVE Like ThisWith Bonnie Buol RuszczykFor CPA TrendlinesIn this episode of MOVE Like This, Bonnie Buol Ruszczyk sits down with Kristi Epp, a tax partner, and Amber Schrock, an advisory partner and Las Vegas market leader at Frazier & Deeter, to explore how the accounting profession is evolving and what firm leaders can do to better support their people. Both guests share their career journeys and how they found long-term professional homes at the firm, emphasizing mentorship, growth opportunities, and a culture that values people as much as performance. MORE MOVE Epp and Schrock note that the past five years, particularly the post-COVID period, have fundamentally reshaped accounting. Remote work, automation, and regulatory complexity are now the norm, while consolidation and private equity activity are accelerating change across the profession. Frazier & Deeter's recent growth initiatives, including acquisitions, reflect this shifting landscape and the need for firms to think differently about scale, talent, and integration.
Firms that treat communication as strategy—not admin—move faster, scale smarter, and keep trust intact.MOVE Like ThisWith Bonnie Buol RuszczykFor CPA TrendlinesOn this episode of MOVE Like This, host Bonnie Buol Ruszczyk explores a deceptively simple question with Alice Grey Harrison, founder of AGH Consulting: Why do so many firm transformations stall—not because of strategy, but because of communication? With more than 30 years of experience in strategic communications and change management within the accounting profession, Harrison has seen firms navigate mergers, private equity investments, leadership transitions, system implementations, and cultural shifts. The difference between momentum and misery, she argues, is rarely technical. It's human. MORE MOVE Her core insight is that culture becomes a growth engine only when people understand how their work connects to the firm's mission, vision, and values. That clarity unlocks what she calls “discretionary energy”—the extra effort people put in when they believe in the firm's direction.
Real employee stories, not polished slogans, are winning the war for talent.MOVE Like ThisWith Bonnie Buol RuszczykFor CPA TrendlinesIn this episode of MOVE Like This, host Bonnie Ruszczyk sits down with Rob Brown, founder and host of the Accounting Voices podcast, to talk about what's really driving change in the accounting profession. Speaking from the UK with deep experience across the U.S. and global markets, Brown shares what he's seeing in firms of all sizes: pressure from talent shortages, shifting expectations from younger professionals, and the growing importance of a strong employer brand rooted in real stories, not slogans. MORE MOVE Brown starts by outlining three major workplace trends.
Culture isn't an initiative—it's a strategy that drives retention and results.MOVE Like ThisWith Bonnie Buol RuszczykFor CPA TrendlinesIn this episode of MOVE Like This, host Bonnie Buol Ruszczyk talks with Stacie Kwaiser, CPA and CEO of Rehmann, about the firm's nearly three-decade journey toward building a culture where people stay, grow, and lead. MORE MOVE Kwaiser began her career in public accounting at Coopers & Lybrand before joining Rehmann, a firm that now employs more than 1,100 professionals across 22 offices. She rose through the audit practice and into firmwide leadership roles, ultimately becoming CEO in 2023. Along the way, she experienced—and helped shape—Rehmann's evolution into one of the profession's most recognized firms for women and equity leadership.Rehmann's reputation didn't happen by accident. Nearly 20 years ago, the firm launched its Women's Career Advocacy Program to address attrition among rising female professionals. That effort has since expanded into a firmwide Career Advocacy Program that embeds mentorship, sponsorship, and structured development into daily culture.Kwaiser is clear that these supports aren't optional. “You can't treat talent development like an initiative that comes and goes,” she says. “It has to be part of how you operate.”Originally published October 2025.

“A knee-jerk pullback can actually increase legal risk."MOVE Like ThisWith Bonnie Buol RuszczykFor CPA TrendlinesIn a climate where diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs have become political flashpoints, employment attorney Aislinn Sroczynski of Royer Cooper Cohen Braunfeld joins host Bonnie Buol Ruszczyk on MOVE Like This to unpack the facts behind the fear. The result is a grounded, no-nonsense discussion on how firms can remain inclusive, compliant, and confident—without compromising their values. MORE MOVE Despite the noise, Sroczynski reminds us that the legal foundation of DEI hasn't budged. Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, and the Equal Pay Act still form the bedrock of U.S. anti-discrimination law. “What's changed,” she explains, “is the level of scrutiny.”That means employers should revisit—not rewrite—their programs to ensure they focus on fairness regardless of protected characteristics, not because of them.
The profession's newest partners may be the most vulnerable.MOVE Like ThisWith Bonnie Buol RuszczykFor CPA TrendlinesMOVE Like This host Bonnie Buol Ruszczyk sits down with Sarah Elliott, CPA, co-founder of Intend2Lead, to unpack what conscious leadership looks like in accounting—and why the profession's newest partners may be the most vulnerable leaders in the firm.Elliott, a former audit partner who left public accounting in 2014 to become an executive coach, argues that real change happens in a precise order: mindset, then skill set, then habits. Her “conscious leader” model centers on leaders who share power, elevate others, and stay curious, even when uncertainty invites fear.“Our best leaders are human-centric first,” Elliott says. “In a world of accelerating tech and change, we have to start with people—always.” MORE MOVE Intend2Lead recently surveyed 110 newly promoted partners (2023–2024). The results spotlight avoidable gaps that push rising leaders toward burnout—or out of public accounting altogether.

Can God still move mountains, heal the sick, and intervene in dramatic, supernatural ways—or are miracles a thing of the past? Does the power of our prayers invite God’s hand, or is it all predetermined? In this unforgettable episode, Catherine sits down with Clifton Payne Jr.—author, pastor, and someone who has personally witnessed the miraculous—to tackle these timely and crucial questions for every Christian parent. Together, they explore: Real-Life Miracles: Clifton shares a stunning testimony of praying over his wife’s dearest friend—a woman with a terminal brain tumor who, against all odds, survived life-threatening surgery and then, during a moment of crisis, experienced an instantaneous healing as they cried out to God. “Not in my name nor authority, but in the authority of Jesus of Nazareth—I command these fluids to be gone.” Instantly, her lungs, ravaged by stomach acids, were clear. “I didn’t feel anything except a sense of anger at the injustice—but the miracle happened.” When Miracles Don’t Come: Even after this incredible event, Clifton and his family faced sorrow as their friend soon passed away. Together, Catherine and Clifton wrestle with what it means when God doesn’t answer as we hope. The Role of Prayer: Drawing on scripture and personal experience, they discuss how prayer isn’t just a ritual—it’s a gateway for God’s will on earth. Clifton notes, “Jesus gave us a model prayer: ‘on earth as it is in heaven.’ Is there any sickness in heaven? No. Poverty? No. So I can always pray against those things.” Catherine urges parents, “It won’t be my lack of faith or prayer that prevents God from doing the miracle. I’m going to pray for healing, and for His will to come.” God’s Not a Formula—He’s a Relationship You’ll be challenged by the reminder that miracles aren’t the result of a spiritual formula or magic words. Cliff and Catherine emphasize that God leads and acts through relationship, not rote ritual. “Always write your theology in pencil,” Cliff was taught. We’re called to listen, trust, and obey—even when the outcome isn’t what we’d have chosen. Seeking rules and protocols miss the point: “It’s all about being in tune with the Spirit, walking closely with God, and learning to hear His voice.” Prayers and “Coincidences”: Clifton quotes Canon J. John: “When we pray, coincidences happen. When we don’t, they don’t.” The episode emphasizes that partnering with God in prayer is far more than wishful thinking—it’s joining Him in His ongoing work. Standout Quotes: “God doesn’t always write the story the way you would.” “When we pray, coincidences happen. When we don’t, they don’t.” As Christian parents, the question isn’t just does God still perform miracles?—but are we inviting Him into our lives and our children’s future through faith-filled prayer? Can your children witness the wonder of God—not just hear about it? About the guest:Clifton H. Payne Jr., author of What the Bible Really Says About Tithing and Giving: It’s Different than You Think, is a former pastor, Bible student, and eye-witness to miraculous moves of God, whose journey from church hurt to New Age, and back to vibrant faith, is a testimony every parent should hear. Tune in for encouragement, challenge, and hope—discover how faith (and prayer) can unlock God’s intervention in the crazy world we parent in. Discussion prompt for parents:What miraculous answers to prayer—big or small—have you witnessed or experienced? How can you model faith-filled prayer to your children, trusting that God still listens and acts, even when the outcome isn’t what you expected? Technology, demographics, and ESG are colliding to reshape advisory, career paths, and firm leadership. MOVE Like ThisWith Bonnie Buol RuszczykFor CPA TrendlinesOn the latest MOVE Like This, host Bonnie Buol Ruszczyk welcomes Dan Hood, editor-in-chief of Accounting Today, who has covered the profession since the late 1990s. From his vantage point, the defining theme isn't a single issue, but the sheer volume of change: accelerating technology (especially AI), shifting demographics, new expectations for work, and the slow-building opportunity of ESG. He argues these forces are intertwined: tech is enabling the shift to advisory, advisory demands new skills and career paths, and those shifts collide with multigenerational teams navigating different priorities. MORE MOVE The conversation quickly zeroes in on culture as a differentiator in the talent market. Firms that thrive don't rely on “nice people” and pizza in busy season; they treat culture as intentional work. That looks like clearly articulating values, reinforcing them constantly, and translating them into practices employees actually feel, including thoughtful benefits and flexibility, yes, but also visible sponsorship, personal investment in careers, and rituals that signal “this matters here.” Culture, Dan notes, should permeate every process, from how meetings are run to how milestones are celebrated.
Jian's feature guest is Iranian-British fitness instructor and performer Elham Mahrooz (Move Like Ellie). Known for her joyful dance videos and infectious positivity, Ellie joins from London for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about her mission, her cultural identity, and what it means to radiate joy even under pressure. The episode also opens with a fiery essay — “When the Left Marches with the Mullahs: Remember 1979” — a look at past alliances and their dangerous echoes today. Plus: news on Roqe Live 5, coming October 2nd at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.

Today we will step away from the kitchen for a while and discuss another aspect of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Movement. In fact, we will look at the idea of moving in two ways: "move," as in change your location. Moving to another city or country. Studies show that where you live is at least as important as "how" you live. It can have profound effects on your happiness, and as a result, your longevity. But we will also discuss movement in the sense of exercise. Nothing too strenuous, but just enough to keep us younger and healthier. However, I end the episode with a more extreme form of exercise, and that is in the form of a short essay I wrote about my time living in Rome and training for a marathon. It also happened to be a great way to get to know different parts of the city on foot instead of from a crowded bus or popping out of a metro station. I hope you enjoy it and your feedback is very welcomed.

Affirm: "I don't need anything, I need Him." And watch as that stomach relaxes. Those shoulders come down an inch or two, a smile returns to your face. The song returns to your lips, to your tongue. The Worship is back. Real life is back, without fear, that spirit that He didn't give you. The miracle happens every time you wake up to Love. Every time you wake up to Him, as Him. Looking with His eyes, working with His hands. Right now you're hearing with His ears. That's why you feel how you feel. You hear me. And you KNOW, you don't believe, you know, and you're ready. And it's time. "But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus--the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God." -Acts of the Apostles 20:24 NLT His Grace is upon you. Move today like you can feel It. That means you move with a smile. You move more slowly, you move more rhythmically, like you're dancing with Him. He loves you. I sow treasure troves of graces when you are in the deepest poverty. No person of reason, no thinker, has ever perform miracles, not even among the saints. He does divine works whosoever surrenders to God. So don't think about it anymore, because your mind is acute and for you it is very hard to see evil and to trust in me and to not think of yourself. Do this for all your needs, do this all of you and you will see great continual silent miracles. I will take care of things, I promise this to you. O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times) Mother, I am yours now and forever. Through you and with you I always want to belong completely to Jesus. Amen "Move like everything is gonna workout... because it is." - @changeyourperception "I would have you become more frequently aware of me, recognizing my holy presence in all of your daily affairs. I am the all of you, all that is real and eternal. Why do you seek the solution of your problems outside of yourself when you will find the Father's love and understanding within? I wait to share your every thought and desire, though I must remain silent and apart until you recognize My presence. On occasion I call gently hoping that you will hear and answer My voice. When you have found the safe shelter in Me, you will lose all thoughts of fear. All the outer circumstances of your life will be a true reflection of that perfection dwelling within you. Then will you live a life of security among the passing things of the world. Men and women working in the construction and trades industry get paid to build things. As Nic and Tarina discuss, it's important for everyone, and especially those just starting out, to see they are also building relationships.Chapter 2 of Nic's book, Know This. Do That, is about being on time. Someone building a career (see Chapter 1) aims to build good relationships. The first step to building good relationships, especially with your boss, requires you to be on time. Why? Because it shows initiative and helps you become known as someone the boss can trust.Nic and Tarina also talk about Chapter 3: Move Like a Shark. An apprentice who shows up on time and is always moving is someone who is considered valuable to the operation. As Nic shares, you won't get fired if you at least show up, but that's not enough to help you advance your career.Your employer sees when you care about your job and support the team. It's their job to observe you and your work. The two behaviors discussed in this episode show the right people that you are someone they can trust. If you enjoy Nic and Tarina's podcast and get something from listening to “all this Nic Bittle Crap,” please hit the like button, share it with a friend, or both. The Houston Texans made a trade that made sense at first blush. Then we found out they had to rip up three years of Stefon Diggs' contract to motivate him to play this season. The Packers can't take that kind of risk with their culture as they try and build a Super Bowl contender. Plus, Graham Barton is awesome and a live mock draft. According to some estimates, only 5% of people in the West get the recommended amount of daily physical activity. Is the solution getting a fitness tracker, developing more discipline, or buying a piece of cardio equipment for your basement? My guest would say none of the above, and would have you think about kids playing at recess instead.Darryl Edwards is the founder of the Primal Play Method. Today on the show, we discuss the epidemic of sedentariness which besets both adults and children and why technology and willpower isn't the cure for it. Darryl then explains why a better solution to getting more movement and physical activity in our lives is rediscovering the intrinsically motivating pleasure of play. He offers suggestions on how to do that, including compiling a play history for your life, embracing “primal movements” that will get you moving like an animal and a child, and getting over the fear of looking goofy while doing so. We discuss the joys and health benefits of exploring your capabilities and environment and how to incorporate more movement into your busy adult life by making even regular activities more playful.Resources Related to the PodcastDarryl's books:Animal Moves: How to Move Like an Animal to Get You Leaner, Fitter, Stronger and Healthier for LifeMy First Animal Moves: A Children's Book to Encourage Kids and Their Parents to Move More, Sit Less and Decrease Screen TimeAoM Article: Get Fit Like a Wild Man — A Primer on MovNatAoM Article: The 10 Physical Skills Every Man Should MasterAoM Article: The Importance of Having a Physical IdentityAoM Article: 30 Days to a Better Man Day 24 — Play!AoM Podcast #508: Break Out of Your Cage and Stop Being a Human Zoo AnimalAoM Podcast #245: The Workout the World ForgotAoM Podcast #749: Let the Children Play!Connect With Darryl EdwardsPrimal Play websiteDarryl on FBDarryl on IG
