Happy Day After Christmas!!! TODAY I welcome music legend David Pajo! He has a new album out on Drag City Records. It is called the ballad of Harry Houdini. Go buy it and listen to the shit out of it. David is rad and we unpack many of the musical projects he has been a part of. We actually barely scratch the surface, the man has done so much. But at least we go into as much detail as we can cram into an hour. Hope you enjoy it. https://www.dragcity.com/products/ballads-of-harry-houdini https://www.instagram.com/cestcadavidpajo/

You may have heard that Underwood's primitive classic from 1988 entitled "California Sigh" was recently reissued by Drag City Records, but did you know that he played alongside the late and great Tim Buckley? Underwood was responsible for laying down those incredible guitar and piano parts on esteemed albums such as Buckley's self-titled debut, the monumental "Goodbye and Hello", "Starsailor" and countless others throughout their short, but transcendent career together. Underwood eventualy stepped away from music all together to write for prestigious publications as well as publishing books like "Inside Paul Horn" and the accalimed "Blue Monday: Tim Buckley Remembered".

Acclaimed musician, multi-instrumentalist and prodcuer Sean O'Hagan sits down with us to talk about his youth growing up in England and being of Irish decent, early influences such as blues, jazz and the dawn of rock n' roll in America, our mutual obsession with David Bowie, meeting the late Cathal Coughlan and forming Microdisney, establishing The High Llamas, the band's new album entitled "Hey Panda" on Drag City Records, working with the mighty Brian Wilson and much much more. Enjoy!

Low Profile with Markly Morrison

Friend of the show Sean O'Hagan returns to the Low Profile to discuss “Hey Panda,” the first release from The High Llamas in eight years. When we last spoke in 2021, he had dropped the High Llamas moniker and forged a new path under his given name, embracing more contemporary influences.  In the years since, he's recruited Llamas new and old to reroute the course of the band he's led since the early ‘90s, and invited exciting guest performers to come along for the ride. “Hey Panda” is out on March 29th from Drag City Records. Today Sean explains the process that led to this album, collaborating with Bonnie Prince Billy and Fryars, recent production and arrangement work with other artists, and a bit of the contemporary music he's been getting into lately.

About fifty years ago, three brothers started a garage band in Detroit. Their sound was forward-thinking and ferocious, and their band name – Death – played no small part in killing their music career. That didn't stop them from doing what they loved, in private, where they amassed dozens of songs that have yet to see the light of day. Their debut album For the Whole World To See was recorded in 1973, but was never released until 2008 when one of the singer's sons discovered the group's lone single. Since then, a documentary has been made about the group, and several more albums have been released. Today I'm speaking with vocalist Bobby Hackney about the group's genesis, reformation, and the music he and his brothers made during the nearly three-decade interim. He also shares about his love for reggae music and his new book Vermont Reggae Fest - The Power of Music. Death has a new split single on Drag City Records with the band Rough Francis. That group's guitar player, Julian Hackney, helps introduce today's episode. Low Profile is a part of the Ruinous Media network. Salt Lake City has a strange reputation. When Kyle Lamont peels back the stereotypes however, she finds that the city's concert culture is creative, edgy and kind. We will go from salt flats to velvet curtains, passing through local nerd caves. We will hang out with Travis Bone, a world renowned illustrator, and hear his surprising process when designing a concert poster. We will meet up with Will Sartain, the co-owner of the Urban Lounge, who might just spill secrets  about the venue's live music lore.Religion quite literally shapes this city's geography. After spending time with Travis and Will, you will hear how  Mormonism also deeply influences the city's concert culture. It's a brand of kindness that seeps out from the artists in a very Salt Lake City way. Here, community is more important than celebrity. Take this episode as  your invitation to couch-surf through Salt Lake City's caring crowd.Music heard in this episode: The songs you heard in this episode are Paint over Prayers, Coma, Face Against the Glass, This Winding Road and More Melody. John Mulaney is a comedian who originally hails from Chicago but currently calls Los Angeles home. One of the most gifted comedic voices of his generation and a brilliant standup, Mulaney wrote for Saturday Night Live between 2008 and 2014, co-creating memorable characters like Bill Hader’s Stefon. Recently he and Nick Kroll conceived of a pair of elder, opinionated New Yorkers in a stage show called Oh, Hello on Broadway, which they took to Broadway and filmed for a new Netflix special, which debuts June 13. His own 2015 standup special for Netflix, The Comeback Kid, is coming to vinyl, CD, and mp3 in June as well, courtesy of Drag City Records, and he's touring his new show, Kid Gorgeous, across North America, including stops in western Canadian cities and a stand at Just for Laughs in Montreal in July. John and I caught up recently to discuss most of the aforementioned projects and people, as well as Donald Trump, Hasan Minhaj's remarks at the White House Correspondent's Dinner, Jerry Seinfeld, Donald Trump, the Obamas, comedy's role in the current political climate, Seth Meyers, meeting Bill Clinton in 1992, another new show he's making with Nick Kroll, music, and much more. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy is a moniker employed by Will Oldham, a truly gifted and idiosyncratic songwriter, singer, musician, producer, and actor based in Louisville, Kentucky. Throughout his illustrious run, as one of the world’s most prolific and singular artistic forces to have emerged in the past 25 years, Oldham has spent some of his time performing songs that were composed by others, often delving into their inner workings to make them his own. His latest release is Best Troubadour, a tribute to the works and work ethic of the legendary country star, Merle Haggard, who passed away in 2016. Best Troubador is out via Drag City Records and Will and I caught up recently to discuss why he doesn’t see the point in telling people that you miss them once they’ve died, how he hoped to start a dialogue with Merle Haggard, how a record like this one might push back against a thoughtless music industry and the way some of us are conditioned to consume art, the strange ritual of music streaming and telephones, unattainable goals and journalistic strategies, and much, much more. My guest this week is David Jacober. He’s a member of Holy Ghost Party and Dope Body, and he also works as a solo artist. We first met when we played a show together in 2009, and I’ve been a fan of both of his bands ever since. He talks about his childhood in Arbutus, and his teenage collaborations with (his current bandmate) Zach Utz. He tells me about Dope Body being slowly courted by Drag City Records and how working with them led to their band gaining traction in Europe. We commiserate about the inherent wackness of being compared to Rage Against The Machine and Kid Rock.
Mike Riley’s art this week is an homage to Boo-Yaa Tribe’s New Funky Nation. This episode is hosted by Splicetoday.com.
