Mellon Professor of Early Modern European History at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ. There have been so many, probably hundreds, different styles and types of hat in history that a question inevitably arises: why? Why did something that began as a simple protection against inclement weather take on such varied forms and social meanings? Bridget Kendall and guests explore not just how hats were made, and by whom, but also how their function has evolved over centuries and across cultures. By focusing on just five distinct hat types, they sketch out a brief social history of headwear. Sandra Young's inquiry into the partisan knowledge practices of early modernity brings to light the emergence of the early modern global south. In The Early Modern Global South in Print: Textual Form and the Production of Human Difference as Knowledge (Routledge, 2015), Young proposes a new set of terms with which to understand the racialized imaginary inscribed in the scholarly texts that presented the peoples of the south as objects of an inquiring gaze from the north. Through maps, images and even textual formatting, equivalences were established between 'new' worlds, many of them long known to European explorers, she argues, in terms that made explicit the divide between 'north' and 'south.' This book takes seriously the role of form in shaping meaning and its ideological consequences. What happens to the world after a pandemic? Lots of experts have been talking about what we may be able to expect after COVID-19 from the 1918 Spanish flu and The Black Death. But, as any historian will tell, history is often more complicated than people think. Ada Palmer is an associate professor of Early Modern European History at the University of Chicago and an expert on the Renaissance that followed the Black Death. Keith M Baker, professor of Early Modern European History at Stanford University, explains a Digital Humanities project mapping the debates on the constituent articles of the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. What happened to rights in 1789? I plan to present in this lecture some results of a collaborative research project exploring this question. Digital Humanities has done remarkable work to reveal the diffusion of texts, the circulation of letters, and the distribution of writers across enlightened Europe. In this regard, its model has tended toward the sociological and dispersive. What might be done, though, with a more political and concentrated approach that would try to digitize decisions and visualize moments of collective choice? What, more specifically, might we learn about the writing of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, that portal to the modern political world? Methods of digital humanities aside, there are also good historiographical reasons for looking again at the week of debates in which the National Assembly fixed on that document. The project I will discuss was provoked most immediately by Jonathan Israel's claims that the principles of the French Revolution, particularly as expressed in August 1789 in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, represented a victory for the group of intellectuals he gathers together under the banner of a Radical Enlightenment deriving its ideas and arguments ultimately from materialist philosophy. But it bears also on issues raised by new histories of human rights, for which the character of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen must be crucial for the question of continuity or rupture in the practice of rights talk.

Reconstructing Things: From Colourful Clothes to Paintings and Pigments Professor Ulinka Rublack (Professor of Early Modern European History, Faculty of History, St John's College, University of Cambridge) Dr Spike Bucklow (Senior Research Scientist and Teacher of Theory, Hamilton Kerr Institute, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) NB This session will be on Thursday at 1.30pm Abstracts Prof Rublack: How can historians reconstruct the symbolic as well as sensate world of colour experience? This talk introduces the audience to a unique experiment in reconstruction. It focuses on the political and emotional meanings of yellow and red in a precise moment in time: the Augsburg Imperial Diet in 1530, one of the key political summits of the German Reformation. It uses contemporary evidence to demonstrates in detail why symbolic languages were so crucial and contested at these meetings, but also uses research on the Fugger merchant company to show that their political outcomes were underpinned by very real financial strategies and economic interests. The paper then concentrates on an explanation of why the head-accountant of the company chose to commission a particular outfit to wear during the summit and shows how an actual reconstruction of historical dress can enrich our knowledge of the past and epistemological approaches. Dr Bucklow: This paper follows Ulinka's focus on colour and reinforces her suggestion that the reconstruction of things can throw light on aspects of culture that might otherwise remain inaccessible. It recognises that things like colour are intimately linked to material substrates that carry them - dyes in cloth, or pigment in paint, for example. It suggests that, up to and including the nineteenth century, some of the cultural significance of colours was linked to the dyes and pigments that provided them. The paper explores the re-enactment of studio practice based on historic artists' recipes, acknowledging the role of tacit knowledge alongside explicit instructions. With reference to a fourteenth-century Missal in the Fitzwilliam Museum, the reconstruction of two blue pigments using contemporary methods shows that there is more to a colour than meets the eye.
