Paracelso era una extraña combinación de químico, alquimista y médico con visión de futuro. Auroleus Phillipus Theostratus Bombastus von Hohenheim, inmortalizado como "Paracelso", nacido el 11 de noviembre o el 17 de diciembre de 1493, en Einsiedeln, Suiza. Era hijo de un médico conocido que fue descrito como un Gran Maestre de la Orden Teutónica. Y fue de él de quien Paracelso recibió su primera instrucción en alquimia. Paracelso, conocido como Teofrasto cuando era niño, era el único hijo de un médico y químico alemán. Su madre murió cuando él era muy joven y poco después su padre se mudó a Villach en el sur de Austria. Paracelso asistió a la Bergschule, fundada por la adinerada familia Fugger de banqueros mercantes de Augsburgo. Los jóvenes eran entrenados en la Bergschule como supervisores y analistas para operaciones mineras en oro, estaño y mercurio. Así como en minerales de hierro, alumbre y sulfato de cobre. Dos años más tarde, Carlos lograba ser elegido emperador del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico, gracias en buena medida al apoyo financiero de Jacobo El Rico, banquero perteneciente a la familia de los Fugger.Junto a los Medici y los Welser, los Fugger fueron las más importantes sagas familiares de banqueros que emergieron al comienzo del Renacimiento.Los Fugger eran originarios de la ciudad de Augsburgo, y formaron una amplia dinastía distribuida entre distintas ramas, con figuras muy destacadas, como Jacobo Fugger (1454-1525), conocido por el apelativo de El Rico, o Anton Fugger (1493-1560). Jacobo había desarrollado un importante emporio financiero gracias a negocios como la minería en el Tirol y con algunos aspectos de la administración pontificia en Roma.Su relación con España comenzó tras el apoyo a Carlos V. Produtrice du film Dignity, Margarita Fugger-Heesen en dévoile la genèse aux côtés de Yaëlle Frei, l'une des protagonistes de ce documentaire consacré à la restauration des personnes victimes de violences sexuelles.Le processus de restauration intérieure d'une personne victime de violences sexuelles, Margarita Fugger-Heesen et Yaëlle Frei l'ont toutes deux très à cœur. Ayant subi des abus dans son enfance, Yaëlle n'a pu en parler que plusieurs années après les événements traumatiques. Elle a accepté d'en témoigner dans le film Dignity: de l'ombre à la lumière: "Je savais que ce documentaire allait être bienveillant, confie-t-elle. Pas assez de personnes osent témoigner à haute voix de ce qu'elles ont vécu. J'ai envie d'être une voix pour celles qui n'ont pas de courage". Quant à Margarita Fugger-Heesen, c'est autant dans le cadre de son travail de psychologue que dans ses cours et stages de danse orientale (elle a fondé la compagnie Simra Dance) qu'elle s'est aperçue du nombre important de femmes au vécu traumatique lié à un abus sexuel : "Les statistiques sont écrasantes. Tant de personnes n'en parlent pas et restent ainsi isolées! Face à cela, je me suis demandée comment les rejoindre. Je sais que le processus de restauration intérieure est très long, mais c'est possible de revivre après un abus, après des violences sexuelles. C'est là que l'idée de ce film documentaire est née. Je voulais donner une impulsion de vie, pour que ces personnes puissent demander de l'aide". I once presented a documentary for Italian TV which declared that Jakob Fugger - Fugger the Rich - was the richest man in history. He was a German who made his fortune in the 16th century through gold and copper mines, lending money to kings and popes and, above all, by selling absolution. By the time he died his net worth was equivalent to nearly 2.5% of European GDP, tantamount to half a trillion dollars in today's money.But, according to the internet (and we all know the internet is never wrong) there was someone even richer - a Malian gentleman, Mansa Musa the Ninth, or King Musa IX.The BBC deems his wealth “indescribable”, placing him above the likes of Augustus Caesar, Andrew Carnegie, John D Rockefeller, William The Conqueror and Colonel Gaddafi in its Wealth Hall of Fame. Fugger doesn't even get a look in.So who was this Mansa Musa the Ninth?Musa was born in 1280 in Mali in West Africa. At some point in his early 20s he became Mansa. The eighth Mansa, his brother Abu Bakr, had wanted to go and explore the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and Musa stood in for him while he was gone. Bakr never came back and so did Musa become Mansa. Many of those out there with a dark view of human nature argue that Musa actually saw to it that Bakr never came back. The whole “exploring the edge of the Atlantic Ocean” thing was just a ruse. Who knows? Perhaps Bakr did make it to the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, also known as Brasil, found it to his liking, as many visitors there do, and decided to settle there.At the time the Mali empire extended through 2,000 miles of West Africa - from what today is Niger in the east, through parts of Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Sierra Leone and Gambia. With land ownership came ownership of the natural resources that lay within - and that's how Musa came to be so rich. Salt, gold and slaves. He sold hundreds of thousands of slaves to the Middle East, pioneering a pan African slave trade that still exists to this day. Those slaves he didn't sell he put to work in his mines.  West Africa has always had lots of gold. Even today Ghana is Africa's second largest producer, beaten only by South Africa, whose premium deposit, the Witswatersrand Basin, was only discovered in 1886 by an Australian mining prospector called George Harrison. Harrison, by the way, in what must be considered among the worst business deals in history, worse even than record label Decca passing on Harrison's namesake's band, the Beatles, seventy years later, sold his stake for £10. Harrison was never heard of again, but his discovery would provide the world with over 20% of all the gold ever mined. But, until the Wits Basin, West Africa was top dog. Indeed, according to the British Museum, something like half of the Old World's gold came from the Mali Empire. Musa sure did enjoy the trappings. He had tens of thousands of slaves to his name and in 1324 set off with 12,000 of them and a retinue of 38,000 others, including soldiers and entertainers - all of them dressed in gold, brocade and silk, apparently - on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Like today's mega billionaires, Musa liked attention. He didn't have rocket ships, Twitter or appearances on Saturday Night Live to get it, so Musa's means was this hajj - a pilgrimage to Mecca, the spiritual home of Islam. The 2,800 mile round trip took him some two years. Each slave carried some four pounds of gold, while camels behind towed as many as 300 pounds of gold dust, so that the entire transit had some 18 tons of gold in tow. There were heralds who bore gold staves, and, en route, every Friday, this devout servant of Islam had a mosque built, so the story goes.When he arrived in Cairo, he went shopping. He did the same in Medina and Mecca. The sudden, dramatic rise in the supply of gold in those cities caused an inflationary collapse that took some 12 years to recover from.Ever the businessman, the devaluation of the gold price because of the sudden new supply was apparent to Musa, so on his way back from Cair,o Musa then borrowed from money-lenders all the gold he and his retinue could carry. Cynics out there argue that his strategy - causing inflation then collapse - was a deliberate ploy to undermine the Cairo economy and relocate Africa's commercial centre out to Mali in the West - to Gao or Timbuktu.Over the course of his reign Musa conquered some 24 cities (and their surrounding districts) - among them Timbuktu, which he took on his way back from Mecca. Once back in Mali, Musa started throwing about his gold there too. For 440 pounds of gold, he hired the services of poet and architect, Abu Isaq Silla, to give Timbuktu a makeover. Universities and mosques were built and Timbuktu became something of a cultural centre - the “Paris of the Medieval World”, according to some. Universities and mosques were built and Timbuktu became something of a cultural centre - the “Paris of the Medieval World”, according to some. “The name Fugger in Germany is like the name Rockefeller in the US.”Greg Steinmetz joins Cole and Bill for his second appearance on the show, this time to discuss his book, The Richest Man Who Ever Lived. The book explores the life of German banker Jacob Fugger. The discussion focuses on how Fugger built his empire of wealth, the partnerships he created along the way, and the lasting legacy he left behind.

Fugger, Welser, Holl: Augsburg ist reich an Stadtgeschichte und Spuren historischer Persönlichkeiten. Einer, der sich dafür einsetzt, dass sie noch mehr in den Blick gerückt werden, ist Michael Beltran. Er ist stellvertretender Vorsitzender der Interessengemeinschaft Historisches Augsburg, dem Dachverband für die historischen Vereine in Augsburg. Und er ist einer der Hauptorganisatoren des Bürgerfests, das nach mehreren Jahren Pause nun vom 4. bis 8. August an der Stadtmauer entlang der Thommstraße stattfindet. Im Podcast "Augsburg, meine Stadt" spricht er darüber, was die Besucherinnen und Besucher dort erwartet – und warum es aus seiner Sicht wichtig ist, dass Augsburg dieses Fest feiert. Beltran spricht im Podcast über die Herausforderungen der Ehrenamtlichen, Bürokratie und den Wunsch, dass die Stadt Augsburg sich in Zukunft wieder stärker für das Historische Bürgerfest einsetzt. Denn die Stadt Augsburg hält sich derzeit mit einem finanziellen Zuschuss für das Bürgerfest zurück – wenngleich Wirtschaftsreferent Wolfgang Hübschle im Vorfeld versichert hat, man werde den Verein nicht im Regen stehen lassen.  Im Podcast geht es jedoch nicht nur um das aktuelle Fest. Geldgeschichte(n): Kaiserliche Finanzen & Wiener Börse Im Rahmen unseres deutsch-österreichischen Verständigungsprojekts vereinen mein Bloggerkollege Clemens Faustenhammer und ich die zwei schönsten Nebensachen der Welt, nämlich Geld und Geschichte, miteinander und reisen dafür einmal monatlich zurück in unsere Finanz-Zukunft. Die Pilotfolge handelt zum einen vom folgenreichen Kamingespräch zwischen einem Kaiser und einem Kaufmann, zum anderen von der wechselvollen Geschichte der Wiener Börse und was Ludwig van Beethoven damit zu tun hat. Die zweite Geldgeschichte führt uns zurück in das goldene Zeitalter der österreichischen Habsburgermonarchie. In deren Hauptstadt Wien gründete Maria Theresia im Jahr 1771 und damit über 21 Jahre vor Eröffnung der Wall Street, die Wiener Börse, die mit Ludwig van Beethoven einen weltberühmten Kunden hat. Der Werdegang des Handelsplatzes reflektiert in den darauffolgenden gut 250 Jahren das Auf und Ab der österreichischen Wirtschaftsgeschichte. Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, la familia Arnault... son las personas más ricas del mundo, con fortunas que superan los 100.000 millones de dólares. Pues bien, su capital palidece si se compara con el que poseía Jakob Fugger, considerado por muchos el hombre más rico de la historia. Llegó a amasar una fortuna que, al cambio, llegó a alcanzar los 400.000 millones de dólares. Más del doble que la de Bezos.Y aún así, lo más probable es que ni siquiera hayas oído hablar de este banquero alemán que vivió entre los siglos XV y XVI. ¿Por qué? En primer lugar, precisamente por ser alemán. No llegó a ser conocido en el mundo angloparlante, hasta hace poco apenas había nada escrito sobre él en inglés, y eso limitó mucho la difusión de sus logros.Y por otro lado, porque era una figura bastante gris. No tenía ambiciones políticas. No construyó ni grandes edificios, ni palacios, ni catedrales... No fue mecenas de ningún gran artista de la época. Apodado el Rico, no se mataron buscando el nick, fue un comerciante y banquero que dominó las finanzas europeas. Subvencionó guerras y reyes, entre ellos la elección del emperador Carlos I de España y V de Alemania. De marcada fe católica, ordenó y financió la creación de un complejo de vivienda social en su ciudad natal, y de paso así salvar su alma. Su construcción se finalizó en 1523 y constaba de 52 casas. Y seguramente este sea su gran legado.¿Un proyecto social de 50 casas? Pues sí. Es probablemente el primer proyecto de vivienda social de la historia. Y en él, los residentes siguen pagando la misma renta que desde su fundación en 1516: 0,88 euros al año. Es el complejo residencial Fuggerei, una villa medieval en el corazón de la ciudad alemana de Augsburgo, en Baviera. Y que recibe el nombre por su impulsor.Por decreto, el financiero decidió que la renta anual sería de 1 florín renano para siempre, al cambio 0,88 euros. Pero también estableció unas peculiares condiciones que todavía rigen: ser católicos, rezar tres veces al día (un Padrenuestro, un Ave María y un credo) por la familia Fugger, tener más de 60 años, haber vivido al menos dos años en Augsburgo y haber caído en la indigencia sin deudas.Fuggerei está formado hoy en día por cerca de 70 casas para unos 150 apartamentos, cada uno de entre 45 y 65 metros cuadrados, con cocina, recepción y dos habitaciones, y las viviendas que dan a la calle tienen incluso un pequeño jardín.El complejo fue ampliado en sucesivas ocasiones y ya incluye una iglesia, una fuente, un colegio e incluso un pequeño museo. A pesar de que en la II Guerra Mundial también fueron objeto de bombardeos, la reconstrucción se hizo respetando el espíritu original, manteniendo el aire de la época en la que fueron construidos. Como curiosidad, el complejo está vallado y, como en tiempos medievales, cierra sus puertas por la noche. Los residentes se turnan para vigilar las entradas y para multar a aquellos que aparecen más tarde de las 10 de la noche con unas sanciones que rondan entre los 50 céntimos y el euro dependiendo de la hora de llegada.A pesar de las condiciones (que incluyen también realizar tareas para la comunidad como cuidar el jardín o en la iglesia), vivir en Fuggerei está muy demandado, y la lista de espera es actualmente de unos cuatro años. Muchos de los residentes son viudas sin ahorros que con sus bajas pensiones no pueden afrontar un alquiler de varios cientos de euros. Maria Mayer, una de las afortunadas, aseguraba en un reportaje de The Wall Street Journal que obtener uno de los apartamentos fue "como si me hubiera tocado la lotería".La peculiaridad de la villa ha hecho de ella un atractivo turístico, y cada año se estima que recibe unos 200.000 visitantes que pagan 4 euros por dar un paseo por el puñado de calles que forman el complejo. Mientras, la familia Fugger trabaja por mantener el legado 20 generaciones después, y la fundación que lleva su nombre sigue gestionando Fuggerei. El imperio que creó Jacobo el Rico, sin embargo, es mucho más pequeño, lastrado, entre otras cosas, por las sucesivas bancarrotas de España.

Die Melancholiker, in ihrer Abstinenz gegenüber dem Genuss, erscheinen als Gegenteil des Prassers und daher zu Geld und Verfügungsmacht über Reichtum zu passen. Die in der Literatur, den Lebensläufen und der öffentlichen Meinung um 1900 beobachteten Charaktereigenschaften sind davon verschieden. Der Soziologe Max Weber und der Philosoph Georg Simmel, der eine Theorie des Geldes schrieb, porträtieren neuartige Charaktere, die in Staat und Wirtschaft vorherrschen. Am Sockel reicher Familien gibt es aber auch die Dandys und die Spieler. Es entsteht der Typ, der das Spekulationsgeschäft beherrscht. Auf der anderen Seite sind die Gründer von Industrien und die Eisenbahnkönige durch das Objekt, mit dem sie umgehen, auf Charakterzüge der Kontinuität angewiesen. Was sind Kennzeichen heutiger Charaktere, die mit Geld und wirtschaftlicher Verfügungsmacht umgehen? Sie sind, sagt der Literaturwissenschaftler Joseph Vogl von der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, durch die Veränderungen der Raumwelten und vor allem der Zeitwelten auf unserem Planeten im 21. Jahrhundert geprägt. Auf die Fähigkeit, mit diesen kollektiven "Zeitschwingungen" (als Beschleuniger oder Verlangsamer) umzugehen, kommt es für Führungskräfte an. Hier entscheidet sich ihre Modernität. Ein Problem liegt darin, dass an das Führungspersonal widersprüchliche Anforderungen gestellt werden, deren Erfüllung sich ausschließt.
