In this episode of the Nomad Futurist, hosts Nabeel Mahmood and Phillip Koblence welcome Kevin Imboden, the Global Director of Market Research and Competitive Intelligence at EdgeConneX. With a strong research background in commercial real estate, Imboden's work at EdgeConneX involves advising hyperscalers and investors in the data center industry and discovering trends in current and future markets across the world.During the episode, Imboden talks about the future markets of the data center industry, how to get communities on board with data center construction and expansion, and his personal feelings about tech being a positive force or a negative force on the world:“How do we create a level of understanding for an average person that [data centers] are not bad for society, for the community, and for the planet? We need to be more involved in communities, so we're not this strange thing that shows up one day and builds an ugly building. It might sound like the most basic thing in the world — going up and talking to people at community meetings. But we don't do it as an industry. Are we afraid to talk to people? Are we afraid to educate people? We shouldn't be.”When asked if he was pessimistic or optimistic about the future of humanity, Imboden shared:“I'm trying to be optimistic, because I think technology is a force for good. For someone to use it for malign purposes is going to be extremely difficult, because there are so many positive forces through corporate business, government, and any number of community organizations who use this technology for positive ends. I think, ultimately, the positive outweighs the negative.” Imboden drew on his research background to illustrate how he keeps up with the constantly evolving world of tech:“When I used to hire researchers, one thing that made someone good is not technical skills. It's not even knowledge. It's honestly just being curious. More than anything, you have to want to know things. You have to want to get answers, be curious, and genuinely believe that.”During the episode, as Imoboden discusses his circuitous route to working in the data center industry and the need to educate young people through programs like Nomad Futurist about the importance of the industry, his desire to share the “humanization” of data centers is impossible to ignore.

For this episode of the Data Center Frontier Show podcast, DCF's Editor in Chief Matt Vincent chats with Brian Green, EVP Operations, Engineering and Project Management, for EdgeConneX. The discussion touches on data center operations, sustainable implementations/deployments, renewable power strategies, and ways to operationalize renewables in the data center. Under Brian's leadership, the EdgeConneX Houston data center completed a year-long project measuring the viability of 24/7 carbon-free energy utilizing AI-enabled technology. With this approach, EdgeConneX ensured the data center is powered with 100% renewable electricity, and proved that even if the power grid operates on fossil-fueled electricity generation, real-time hourly increments can be applied to new and existing data centers. As a result, for every given hour, EdgeConneX and its customers can operate throughout the year without emitting any CO2 with zero reliance on fossil standby generation during dark or cloudy periods. This innovative program will be duplicated at other EdgeConneX facilities globally. Another real-world example discussed is related to a facility where the local community complained about the noise of the fans. Brian's team worked to improve the noise level by changing fan speeds, and as a result, the data center and the local community realized multiple benefits, including enhanced community relations by removing the noise disturbance, increased efficiencies, and reducing amount of power used, a big cost-saver for the data center. Along the way, Brian explains how he, along with EdgeConneX team, are big believers in the company's motto: Together, we can innovate for good.

The Road to Autonomy

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 3, 2023 43:58

Matt Horton, CEO, Voltera joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy Podcast to discuss scaling electric vehicle fleet charging. The conversation begins with Matt discussing a Bloomberg Intelligence report that states there needs to be at least $42 billion in EV charging infrastructureinvestments by the end of the decade to keep up with the projected electric vehicle adoption. I think in fact we may even need to deploy more capital and do it more quickly to really meet the demand that we are seeing from customers. – Matt HortonIn order to succeed in the charging business, you have to have a real estate strategy that has to have the right locations that both consumers and fleet operators want to charge their vehicles. The challenge is not all of these locations have current access to the power needed to charge EVs at scale. A big part of the challenge ahead of us is fundamentally rewiring the grid to deliver power where it's going to be needed for transportation uses, not just for commercial, residential, and industrial. – Matt HortonThis is where Voltera comes into the picture as they are working with utilities, acquiring real estate and developing turnkey sites for commercial EV fleet charging operations. Voltera has deep experience in this model, as the company was spun out of EdgeConneX in 2009. This is the same year that Facebook first built their own data center in Oregon. The significance of this milestone is that the EV fleet charging business will mimic the rollout of corporate data centers for cloud operations built and operated by 3rd parties.Today large fleet owners want to develop their own charging centers, instead of relying on 3rd parties. This approach is capital intensive and limits fleet operators ability to scale. Comparing and contrasting to data centers, this approach is a pre-cloud approach. When the cloud scaled, start-ups such as Netflix, Uber and Airbnb were able to build businesses and scale without having to own and operate their own data centers, saving them an immense amount of capital. There really are a lot of important lessons that the charging industry can learn from the digital infrastructure space, from wireless telecom, from data centers, and we want to deploy a lot of that learning and a lot of the approach to really build charging right so that it will be reliable and cost effective. – Matt HortonLarge EV fleet operators are choosing Voltera to be their charging partner because to do it on your own is time consuming and capital intensive. The risk to Voltera from a capital investment standpoint is limited as charging is a key element for EV fleet operators being able to operate their business. Today we are not having any problem getting customers to sign up to very long-term contracts, because they are just like we are, they are making a long-term commitment to electrifying the business. – Matt HortonIn addition to EV fleet operators, Voltera is starting to see interest from Class-8 truck operators as they look to electrify their fleets. To source the energy that will be needed to charge Class-8 trucks, Voltera is developing power procurement strategy. While developing a power procurement strategy, one has to take into account power distribution and timing. In most places in the country there isn't a challenge of power production, it's more a challenge of power distribution and timing. – Matt HortonIt's not just EV fleet operators and Class-8 truck operators which are electrifying, it is also autonomous vehicle operators. The value proposition for Voltera is clear, they own and manage the real estate and charging while their customers focus on their core business of transportation. Wrapping up the conversation, Matt shares his thoughts on how he sees EV charging evolving. As (hopefully) many readers will know Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen, Tim Siglin, and I have been strong vocal supporters of Women in Streaming Media and more broadly of our ‘sisters-in-streaming' for many years. In programming conference sessions and panel discussions, webinars, and more we always proactively try hard to reach out to those women we know in the industry to ensure there is frequent representation for women in public events. Photo above: Speakers on the "Future of Monetization" panel at Streaming Media West Connect earlier this month. Top row, L to R: Nadine Krefetz, Consultant, Reality Software and Contributing Editor, Streaming Media; Damian Pelliccione, Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Revry TV; Elizabeth Parks, President, Parks Associates. Middle row, L to R: Mike Woods, SVP - Ad Products, Amagi; Daniel Schneider, SVP, Revenue, Cinedigm; Gene Pao, Senior Vice President, Digital Enterprises, Shout! Factory. Bottom: Chris Yates, General Manager, Redbox On Demand We attended the launch of Women in Streaming Media at IBC in 2018 as invitees of Alicia Pritchett, Diane Strutner, and Peggy Dau (who drive the initiative). We have always held one of two guest seats for them in SMAdvancedForum.com—our monthly catchup with ‘characters' from the industry, and we traditionally try to hand over the reins of the show to an all-woman crew specifically for International Women's Day each March. When interviewing for articles, we keep our ears out for opportunities for womansplaining to take the priority over mansplaining, and (unknown to you all) we have protocols for keeping an eye out for when women are getting squeezed out in panel discussions where we are moderators, to ensure their voices are heard. And if you think it is bad across the streaming sector as a whole, once you dive into the CDN sub-sector, the situation is seriously dire. In fact, no event has even been more painful for me to programme than the Content Delivery Summit, the latest iteration of which ran earlier this month. Just look at the agenda. Great topics with really engaging speakers, and a dense day of exciting engagement across the sector. But we had only two women on the program—kudos Elsa Pine from EdgeConnex and Nino Doijashvili from Tulix). On publication of the agenda, this issue was raised directly with me by both Ian Wagdin from the BBC (whose PR department raised it on a ‘non-discrimination' concern) and by active support of Vanessa Vigar, who is a member of Women in Streaming Media and has pointed out the issue in events beyond Streaming Media and SMAF. And absolutely rightly so. But I had to clarify the back story, which I want to share a little with you all here. We initially worked with sponsors to place their participants. Elsa has been a frequent panelist at CDS, and so she and her company were very much involved from the outset of this event. And while a couple of the other sponsors initially did put forward women speakers, in both cases they switched them out for male representatives before the programme was finalised. We don't really have much control over who sponsors put forward to speak, so at that stage we took that on the chin, and decided to focus on the panels and non-sponsor placements in the event. So we put out the call for speakers in August/September, and we had about 3 dozen responses. The respondents were 100% from men. Not a single woman replied—and that call was distributed on StreamingMedia.com and its associated feeds with no (known of) bias. This is the first time that has happened, and it ties up strongly with evidence I have seen in SMAdvancedForum (SMAF) too; while up until this summer we have never had any issue reaching out for and finding f...

This engaging #NomadFuturist podcast takes listeners on an exciting ride with Phill Lawson-Shanks, a fearless IT innovator whose insatiable curiosity, daring, and ability to see patterns led him to insights and accomplishments that have helped advance the world of IT and critical infrastructure—including the development of some of the earliest instances of edge and cloud computing as well as advancements in data center efficiencies. Lawson-Shanks, who found out later in life that he is dyslexic, was “released” from university into the real world where he started his journey as a security guard for British Airport authorities. Despite not having the typical academic credentials, he quickly won a slot to receive computer training. His natural aptitude for pattern recognition and for what he characterizes as 3D thinking led to a career in programming, followed by network development.  Since then, Lawson-Shanks has partnered with CEOs at various firms on the forefront of innovation and is now the Chief Innovation Officer at Aligned Energy where groundbreaking developments in cooling efficiency are transforming the data center space. Lawson-Shanks believes that dyslexia may have given him an edge in his career. “I don't understand sequential thinking, so I just jump and go and do things. I don't take no for an answer.” Lawson-Shanks is modest and playful as he engages with Phil and Nabeel, touching on his involvement with the transition from mainframes to minicomputers, to networks, to the Internet, to data centers, the edge, and sustainability. He describes how he moved from company to company as he took on exciting new challenges. “I don't thrive in large corporations. I like the scrappiness of the startup, the turnaround, the smaller entity. I like bringing it to that stage, that pivot point where it's going to become something enormous and then look for the next thing.” Lawson-Shanks has a constant childlike excitement and expectation about what we can do and where we can go. He sees many areas as important to the future including augmented reality, IoT, 5G, machine learning and the circular economy. He is extremely optimistic about the future of the industry. “Data centers are truly the engines of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. And there's so much going on that you can do to help the people who are changing how we all live and breathe.” What does he see as critical skills for success? “It's the ability to recognize context and jump—being prepared to buckle down and do what needs to be done, but also, if there's an opportunity to do it differently, to be able to convince whoever that power broker is that there's a better or different way… so communication skills are important, being able to read people, and timing.” Phill Lawson-Shanks has more than 25 years of experience identifying new opportunities for further growth of leading data center infrastructure, network architecture, and cloud solutions in the U.S. and abroad. As Chief Innovation Officer at Aligned, Lawson-Shanks is responsible for the management of revenue generation and profitability objectives, as well as championing key innovation, technology, and sustainability strategies aimed at maximizing new business development. Prior to joining Aligned, Lawson-Shanks served as Chief Innovation Officer at EdgeConneX, where he was instrumental in driving strategies focused on creating the next generation of network edge-based data centers for the digital content ecosystem. Throughout his career, Lawson-Shanks has also served in numerous senior executive-level positions at Virtacore, Alcatel-Lucent, Savvis (now CenturyLink Technology Solutions), and MCI (now Verizon Digital Media Services). He currently holds eight active technology patents and serves on the Board of Directors for Netrality Data Centers as well as the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA) Advisory Board.

The European data center industry is full of growth and change. The increased demand from COVID-19 and individual European countries are at the forefront of that growth. Hear what EdgeConneX CMO, Phillip Marangella, has to say about it. This is an episode of HawkTalk, datacenterHawk's series of candid one on one conversations with executives and leaders in the data center industry. If you enjoyed this episode, you can check them all out on our blog. If you'd like to know when we release future episodes, you can subscribe here. Below are some of our takeaways from the discussion. COVID-19 increased data center demand as traffic moved from offices to homes The COVID pandemic caused major shifts in the world. Many industries are hurting due to these shifts, but the data center industry has seen an increase in demand. People are home more now than they were a year ago. Whether they're working from home, streaming tv shows, playing online video games, or anything else that requires an internet connection, homes are becoming the new edge in the data center industry. Opportunities are rising in secondary EU markets Building data centers in Europe can come with challenges like planning for long term scalable power. You need to be able to meet all of your customer's requirements as they continue to grow. Customer needs today are not what they will be in 5-10 years. Planning for expansion to meet needs in the future can be difficult to balance against the costs of building beyond the needs of today. There are still a lot of opportunities in the FLAPD (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, & Dublin) markets, but at the same time, there are a number of secondary markets that are beginning to have needs for data centers. That's why EdgeConneX decided to build in Warsaw & Munich and are continuing to track markets outside of the FLAPD markets. Expansion into APAC The APAC data center market is a rapidly growing part of the global data center industry and one that EdgeConnex is tracking for future expansion. Expansion into the APAC market requires smart strategic planning and is quite a different task than building in either North America or Europe. A good partner in Asia to help navigate the opportunities there is key to success. We'll continue to track EdgeConneX as they grow and expand into new markets. Be sure to subscribe to this channel to stay up to date on the data center industry.

Life on the edge can be dangerous. Randy saw it as an opportunity to found EdgeConneX, a data center company built to bring speed to the market. He took some time to walk us through his journey and how his experience shapes his outlook on today. This is an episode of HawkTalk, datacenterHawk's series of candid one on one conversations with executives and leaders in the data center industry. If you enjoyed this episode, you can check them all out on our blog or listen to them in podcast form. If you'd like to know when we release future episodes, you can subscribe here. On HawkTalk 47 David visits with Randy Brouckman and discusses the beginnings of EdgeConneX, how COVID-19 has changed the industry, it's long term effects, and what the future of the international data center markets could look like. Randy gave us some great insights based on his experience starting and leading a top tier data center provider in EdgeConneX. Check out a few quick takeaways from our conversation below. EdgeConneX aims to bring speed to the market EdgeConneX was founded with a goal of bringing speed to the everyday technology user, or in other words “eliminating the spinning pinwheel.” They planned to do this by bringing the data closer to the user. EdgeConneX recently embarked on a data center building blitz to realize this vision, building 23 data centers over 24 months. The effects COVID-19 will have on the data center industry COVID-19 has acted as an acceleration of the digitalization of businesses. Within the first 30 to 40 days of COVID-19, there's been tremendous growth specifically in the connectivity to the cloud. Users have been moving towards needing more power and more space with the growth of technology usage. The future of the European data center markets In Europe, there will be no slow down in the expansion of the big core markets: Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, & Dublin. While expansion is going to continue to take place, the data sovereignty in Europe could also be driving the opening of new availability zones in new markets. Adding a second availability zone in Germany because Frankfurt isn't enough could be a possibility, or opening a zone to service eastern Europe. These availability zones could very well be led by edge data centers. We also talked about… How newer technologies such as autonomous cars & 5G affect the edge What Randy is excited about being a leader in the data center industry Don't forget to check out the rest of our HawkTalk's and don't miss out on our latest release of market data for the data center industry. ------ Thank you for watching this video.
