Born in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1955, Burtynsky's early exposure to a nearby General Motors plant and ships navigating the Welland Canal in his hometown captured his imagination, helping to formulate his ideas about the scale of human creation he would later capture in photographs. A select list of Burtynsky's many distinctions include the inaugural TED Prize, the title of Officer of the Order of Canada, the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award for Art, a Royal Photographic Society Honorary Fellowship, and the World Photography Organization's Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award. In deze podcast neem ik je even mee naar de exporuimte van Scharpoord in Knokke-Heist waar wij momenteel de tentoonstelling WATER organiseren van Edward Burtynsky. Ik zei het al eerder in de podcast, maar voor mij is Edward Burtynsky een van de grootste levende fotografen van dit moment. Dus dat hij hier bij ons in België is voor een tentoonstelling is een professionele droom die uitkomt. En hij was hier in de dagen van de opening en ik nam een hele praktische podcast met hem op. Ik zocht hem eerder dit jaar in Londen op om algemener te praten over zijn werk en zijn werkwijze, maar in deze extra podcast wilde ik inzoomen op enkele van zijn foto's, kijken naar de details, de anekdotes achter bepaalde beelden.  Voor Water reisde Burtynsky naar vijf continenten. Van de Golf van Mexico tot aan de oevers van de Ganges. Tijdens zijn reizen ging hij op zoek naar de basis van het leven, de essentiële bron, de kostbaarste vloeistof, het goud van de toekomst. Water dus. Hij volgde de loop van rivieren en bestudeerde de zeeën. Hij beschreef de verschillende gebruiken van water en keek onder het oppervlak van de dingen. Hiervoor gebruikte hij geavanceerde technologieën en via luchtfoto's toont hij ons de werkelijkheid. Gaandeweg werd hij zich meer bewust van waar het om draait. Niet enkel de esthetiek, wel het leven. Hallo en welkom bij De Donkere Kamer podcast. Mijn gast vandaag leerde ik kennen via het onderdeel ‘pitch je fotoproject' op onze live shows die wij al 9 jaar organiseren op de grootste podia in Vlaanderen. In dit onderdeel kunnen beloftevolle fotografen hun project in 3 minuten tijd pitchen aan het publiek in ruil voor heel veel podiumervaring en een ondersteuningspakket. Beloftevol is mijn gast alleszins, en eentje met ondertussen een bewezen trackrecord ook. Het project dat ze kwam pitchen is ondertussen op de markt, nadien volgde er uiteraard nog meer. En heel wat tentoonstellingen klein en groter, in België, maar ook ver daarbuiten. Ze publiceerde in grote titels zoals De Standaard en De Volkskrant, maar ook in onder meer de New York Times, The Guardian en Geo. Haar stijl is bedachtzaam, mijmerend en soms humoristisch. Haar werk bevraagt vooral de relatie tussen de mens en zijn omgeving. Edward Burtynsky is regarded as one of the world's most accomplished contemporary photographers. His remarkable photographic depictions of global industrial landscapes represent over 40 years of his dedication to bearing witness to the impact of human industry on the planet. Edward's photographs are included in the collections of over 80 major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa; the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid; the Tate Modern in London, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California.Edward was born in 1955 of Ukrainian heritage in St. Catharines, Ontario. He received his BAA in Photography/Media Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) in 1982, and has since received both an Alumni Achievement Award (2004) and an Honorary Doctorate (2007) from his alma mater. He is still actively involved in the university community, and sits on the board of directors for The Image Centre (formerly Ryerson Image Centre).In 1985, Edward founded Toronto Image Works, a darkroom rental facility, custom photo laboratory, digital imaging, and new media computer-training centre catering to all levels of Toronto's art community.Early exposure to the General Motors plant and watching ships go by in the Welland Canal in Edward's hometown helped capture his imagination for the scale of human creation, and to formulate the development of his photographic work. His imagery explores the collective impact we as a species are having on the surface of the planet — an inspection of the human systems we've imposed onto natural landscapes.Exhibitions include: Anthropocene (2018) at the Art Gallery of Ontario and National Gallery of Canada (international touring exhibition); Water (2013) at the New Orleans Museum of Art and Contemporary Art Center in Louisiana (international touring exhibition); Oil (2009) at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. John Leroux talks about a new exhibit at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. It features the work of contemporary photographer Edward Burtynsky. His photography straddles the line between nature and industry and the new exhibit features photographs ranging from a clear cut in Vancouver to oil refineries in Saint John.

Formerly a photographer and founder of The Center for Photography in Woodstock in 1977, Howard Greenberg has been one of a small group of gallerists, curators and historians responsible for the creation and development of the modern market for photography. Howard Greenberg Gallery—founded in 1981 and originally known as Photofind—was the first to consistently exhibit photojournalism and 'street' photography, now accepted as important components of photographic art. Howard Greenberg Gallery maintains diverse and extensive holdings of photographic prints including Eugène Atget, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, André Kertész, William Klein, Gordon Parks, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, Josef Sudek, and Edward Weston on its roster of artists. More recent additions include Edward Burtynsky, Jungjin Lee, Joel Meyerowitz, and Vivian Maier. In 2013 Howard Greenberg Gallery announced exclusive representation for the estates of Berenice Abbott and Arnold Newman. In 2018 Howard Greenberg Gallery became the primary representative of the Ray K. Metzker Archive. In 2019 Greenberg sold 447 photographs from his collection to the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. Here is Part ll of my conversation with Michael Torosian featuring his soon to be released memoir/bibliography Lumiere Press: Printer Savant and Other Stories (listen to Part l here).   This episode gets to the essence of Michael's book writing/publishing practice: the interview. We discuss a list of guidelines Michael has developed based on his experience interviewing some of greatest photographers of the 20th century. It can be found in Savant in a chapter entitled 'Residual Landscapes, The Photographs of Edward Burtynsky.' Here's a summary:   1. I educate myself to the fullest extent about the artist's life and work. 2. I make up a question list of at least two or three pages...The I throw the list away. 3. I begin the interview with something plucked from the uniqueness of the day, the inception of our new experience. 4. I listen. It's imperative to maintain situational awareness and stay in the moment. 5. I avoid leading questions 6. I probe for greater detail. 7. I re-ask questions 8. In the editing process I splice answers together from various "takes." There is no improvisation or invention 9. I strive to be self-effacing.

This week: Tom Seymour talks to the photographer Edward Burtynsky as he is recognised for his Outstanding Contribution to his medium in the Sony World Photography Awards. He discusses the Russian invasion and his Ukrainian heritage. In this episode's Work of the Week, we look at Winslow Homer's most famous work, The Gulf Stream (1899, reworked by 1906), which is at the heart of a new show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. And we talk to Lisa Movius about the decision by the Nord regional government in France to suspend plans for the exhibition Matisse by Matisse—a collaboration between Musée Matisse le Cateau-Cambrésis and the private Beijing museum UCCA—over China's supposedly neutral position on Russia's invasion. After being announced as the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography award at the Sony World Photography Awards 2022, the Canadian photographer and artist Edward Burtynsky talks to Tom about his 40-year career as a landscape photographer. This year's Turner Prize is returning to Liverpool for the first time in 15 years. Laura Robertson, a writer, critic and editor based in the city gives us a rundown of the shortlisted artists announced today at Tate Liverpool: Heather Phillipson, Ingrid Pollard, Veronica Ryan and Sin Wai Kin. Award-winning and twice Booker shorted listed author of The Butcher Boy Patrick McCabe talks to Tom Sutcliffe about his new novel Poguemahone. Described as this century's Ulysses, the novel takes the form of a free verse monologue set in Margate in the mind and memories of Dan Fogarty and his sister Una. Rafaella Covino, the founder and director of Applause for Thought, which offers free and low cost mental health assistance for people working in theatre, and Wabriya King, Associate Drama Therapist at the Bush Theatre, join Tom to discuss the growing need for wellbeing support across the theatre industry.
