Hungarian Esther Horvath is a multi-award winning polar photographer whose work focuses on climate research in the polar regions. By documenting the work and life of scientists who deliver important data, Esther hopes to help make a difference in how people understand what actually is occurring, and her collaborations with scientists help raise public awareness about these increasingly fragile environments. Esther was born in 1979 in Sopron, Hungary. Esther grew up behind the Iron Curtain and even though she lived only a few kilometers from the Austrian border she was ten years old before the ‘curtain' came down and she was able to explore the Austrian mountains where the Alps start, discovering a world that held a fascination which would become a life-long passion for her as an explorer.  Despite a childhood interest in art and photography Esther chose to study Economics at West Hungarian University for her Masters Degree. Upon graduating she worked in the private sector in Vienna  and at 25 she owned her first camera which would prove to be life-changing. With a growing passion for photography she decided to go to New York to study Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at International Center of Photography, (ICP). After finishing ICP, she received an assignment from Audubon magazine, to the Arctic Ocean, which was the next most important milestone in her life. Today she documented 25 scientific expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica. From 2019 – 2020, Esther spent almost four months on board the Polarstern icebreaker during polar nights in extreme conditions, documenting the MOSAiC expedition in the Central Arctic Ocean, the largest ever Arctic Ocean science expedition.  In 2022 she was the official photographer of the Endurance22 expedition, searching and finding Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship the Endurance. Esther won the first prize in World Press Photo Award, Environmental single category in 2020. In 2022, she received the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in New York for her work in raising awareness about conservation, environmental justice and climate change. Esther is a contributing photographer and explorer for National Geographic Explorer, and a Nikon Ambassador and photographer for the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. His work brings him across the world, from the sombre mountains of Scotland, to the tribal lands of Kenya and, more recently, the arid plains of Saudi Arabia. A regular contributor to National Geographic, he has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, exhibited in major galleries and museums, and published worldwide. Recognized by World Press Photo, the Taylor Wessing National Portrait Prize and Pictures of the Year International, David published the monograph ‘Hunters' in 2012. His work continues to examine mankind's complex relationship with the natural world. Visually reminiscent of 19th-century daguerreotypes, David's photographs are arresting, engaging, and thought-provoking. His passion for his work allows him to consistently succeed in navigating the minefields surrounding his chosen subjects. The resulting bodies of work never fail to draw people in and create a space for a much-needed dialogue. ---   Workshops 2022   Street Photography Workshop in Hamburg (12. In episode 199 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on creativity, working as a photographer, and if NFTs are the result of a perfect storm or just a passing squall. Plus this week photographer Mike Abrahams takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Born in 1952 in South Africa Abrahams moved to Liverpool in 1955 and grew up there. Aged 12, he discovered the magic of the darkroom under the stairs in a friend's house and became hooked on photography. In 1970 after failing to get into medical school he enrolled on a dentistry course in the hope that he could switch to medicine but he was expelled after just two terms. In 1972 he enrolled on a photography course at the Polytechnic of Central London and discovered Henri Cartier Bresson, Don McCullin, Leonard Freed, Robert Capa and Marc Riboud who had visited the course to show his work which Abrahams found transforming. In 1975 he began working as a freelance photographer with the Times, Sunday Times, Sunday Times Magazine, The Telegraph, The Observer Magazine, and started to work with international magazines and newspapers, covering stories in Southern Africa, Gaza, Cyprus, Israel, Eastern Europe, Northern Ireland, the UK as well as portraits of those in the arts and literature. In 1981 he was a co-founder of Network Photographers the internationally renowned picture agency. His work on Faith - A Journey with Those Who Believe, published in 2000, was the culmination of five years work, documenting the extremes and passion of Christian devotion throughout fourteen countries. Other important assignments have included coverage of the division of Cyprus, the Intifada in the Occupied Territories, the Berlin Wall, the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe, the rise in the influence of the religious in Israeli politics, the Cult of Assad in Syria, The Jews of Damascus and Bradford's Muslims and The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Awards for this work included the World Press Photo Award in 2000, the book Faith was a finalist in the Design Week Awards and the work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and Europe. Cafe Royal Books have published six books of his work in 2022 and his work from Northern Ireland was published as Still War - Photographs From The North of Ireland in 1989. The B&H Photography Podcast is kicking off the new year hot. For our first episode of 2022, we welcome photographer Joe McNally to discuss his career, his working methods, and his exciting new book, The Real Deal: Field Notes from the Life of a Working Photographer.   Joe McNally is known to many as a “photographer's photographer,” skilled in many genres and able to work across the lines of photojournalism, long-form photo essays, portraiture, sports, dance, and even fashion photography. He has worked for National Geographic, Time, LIFE, and Sports Illustrated, and his commercial clients include FedEx, Adidas, Epson, and many more. He is also a Nikon and Capture One ambassador, a World Press Photo Award winner, and an Alfred Eisenstaedt Award recipient, but as he mentions in our conversation, he started at the New York Daily News as a copyboy, “the wretched dog of the newsroom.”   Our conversation is easygoing, and we talk with McNally about the beginning of his career and early assignments. We discuss the evolution of photo technology (he shot the first “all-digital” story for National Geographic), and there is much to be gleaned about lighting, gear choices, and custom camera settings. We also talk about self-confidence, research, big budgets, and general thoughts on how to succeed in the ever-changing photo business. McNally also spins a few tales about his more adventurous assignments and the risks and rewards that come from them.   In his new book, The Real Deal, McNally candidly shares stories, lessons, and insights he has collected along the way. This is not a dedicated how-to book, nor is it a navel-gazing look back at “the good old days,” because those never really existed anyway. This book is as welcomed and as enjoyable as our conversation. Join us.   Guest: Joe McNally Photograph © Joe McNally https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts

My guest today is one of Australia's most-prominent photo/investigative journalists, Andrew Quilty. Andrew started his career in Sydney, then moved to New York City and eventually to Kabul, Afghanistan, after a two-week trip to photograph the Afghan cricket team turned into an odyssey now into its eighth year. He has worked in all but a handful of Afghanistan's 34 provinces, photographed for most of the world's premiere publications and won several accolades, including a World Press Photo Award, a Polk Award, several Picture of the Year International awards and the Gold Walkley, Australian journalism's highest honour.  More recently, Andrew has focussed on the written word. His 18-month investigation into a CIA-led Afghan militia, responsible for several massacres in 2019, for The Intercept, was recently the recipient of an Overseas Press Club of America Award. His most recent piece published in the April edition of The Monthly is titled, ‘The Worst form of Defence: New revelations of Australian war crimes in Afghanistan', which is an investigation into alleged war crimes by Australian special forces in Uruzgan. This, of course, is separate to the 'Afghanistan Enquiry' released in Nov last year. We covered many topics, including: Andrew's entry into photography The craft of photography The pull of Afghanistan  ‘Seeing' the people of Afghanistan Danger of oversimplified narratives of conflict Second-order effects of coalition operations Foreigner's (lack of) understanding of Afghanistan Background to his award-winning photo “The Man on the Operating Table” Andrew's shift to the written word The dangers of life as a war journalist Andrew's views on the future of Afghanistan You can see some of Andrew's photographs via his webpage here, read Andrew's article 'The CIA's Afghan Death Squads' here, and his article ‘The Worst form of Defence', here.  For recent updates on the situation in Afghanistan, you can follow Andrew on Twitter (@andrewquilty). Zack Canepari // “It is so easy to get illegal guns. There are loopholes, and the way these illegal guns come into these communities is so much a product of poorly thought out gun laws. That to me is just hair pulling…because why is this so complicated. I resent that there is this one, uncompromising line of the constitution that was made so long ago under such different circumstances, and that we are completely incapable of talking about it in a common sense way.” . Welcome to @thesearcherpodcast . On this episode of the show, I speak with Zack Canepari, an independent photographer and filmmaker specializing in documentary storytelling. His photography career began in India/Pakistan, and after living in the region for three years Zack moved to California and teamed with filmmaker Drea Cooper, to create ZCDC. In 2010, ZCDC launched “California is a place”, a documentary film series about the Golden State. Next, the duo directed their debut feature documentary T-REX, about Olympic gold medalist boxer Claressa Shields, which premiered at SXSW and went on to win audience and jury awards around the country including San Francisco International and Hot Docs. . Later, ZCDC's Netflix Original Doc series, FLINT TOWN, opened to critical acclaim and earned nominations from Critic's Choice Awards and the IDA. The series takes an unflinching look at a struggling city through the eyes of the police and community. Their latest film, FIRE IN PARADISE, also released on Netflix, was shortlisted for the 2020 Academy Awards and received multiple Emmy nominations. . As a photographer, Zack's first monograph, titled REX, focused on Flint through the experiences of Shields and her sister, Briana. REX was named one of TIME Magazines top photography books of 2016 and was awarded Best Photography Book at the Pictures of the Year International. A series of short films, photo projects and exhibitions followed, all part of an ongoing interactive web series titled "Flint is a place". In 2017, Canepari won a World Press Photo Award and was awarded Multimedia Photographer of the Year at Pictures of the Year International for his work in Michigan. . We centered our discussion on much of the aforementioned work, Zack's experience of working both as a still photographer and a filmmaker, the covid and post-covid work environments, his current film with @jessicadimmock exploring gun violence in America, and how these projects have shaped his views on everything from policing to parenting his daughter. . This conversation was recorded late last year, so there may be some comments and comments regarding covid-19 and politics that are a bit outdated. .

Plus this week photographer Witold Krassowski takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Born in 1956 Witold Krassowski studied linguistics at the University of Warsaw and the Sorbonne, he received his doctorate in photography in 2009 at the Radio and Television Faculty of the University of Silesia in Katowice and three years later he received his post-doctoral degree. After receiving his final diploma his photographic hobby became his career. The situation at the time in Poland at that time was in major transition as communism was crumbling, and the Solidarność movement was created. For several years Krassowski was busy running and learning, documenting a country in a state change and turmoil. Disgusted with the state of the Polish economy, he moved to London in 1988. There he became involved with the Independent Magazine, where the photo editor Colin Jacobson offered him some assignments and suggested he join the Network Photographers agency. Krassowski has worked as a photo-reporter in Afghanistan, the UK, Mongolia, and India, but most of his creative output comes from Poland. His work has been published in various titles including Liberation, Tempo, Stern, Der Spiegel, The Observer, The Independent, The New Yorker, Forbes and Fortune, among others. He was the recipient of the World Press Photo Award in 1991 and 2003. Since 2009, he has published four books including Powidoki Z Polski: After Images of Poland and exhibited at the Freightdoors Gallery, California, USA; The Photographers Gallery, London, UK; Noorderlicht Photofestival, Holland and Perpignan Photo Festival, France. Award winning photojournalist and renowned storm chaser Nick Moir joins the show to talk about what it's like facing down every type of severe weather you could imagine and how he has continued to evolve as a photographer, journalist, and creative after years in the field working with the Sydney Morning Herald.  You can get a brief glimpse into what the fast paced world of storm chasing looks like in Krystle Wright's new film "Chasing Monsters" which features Nick and his work.  Growing up in Sydney's Blue Mountains, Nick was inspired at an early age by the natural beauty and power of the storms and bushfires that were part of existence in that landscape.  As the son of a political cartoonist, art and creative expression were also a part of his young life and soon he would find his voice through the lens of a camera.  He became fascinated by the lifestyle of the newspaper photojournalist and began working his way up the ranks.  During the early 2000s, he set out with another photographer to document a devastating bushfire and after two years of coverage they had both brought home the prestigious World Press Photo Award.  Although he works as a daily news photojournalist, his continued fascination of storms has sent him all over the world from covering devastating tornadoes in America, to the Tsunami in Indonesia, to raging bushfires in his own backyard. During our conversation we talk about what it's like to mentally recover from the power and tragedy that can be involved in what he shoots, how he prepares for shooting in places like the infamous Tornado Ally, and the advice he gives to other out there wanting to brave the severity of mother nature.   To Learn More About Nick Moir Visit: http://www.nickmoirphoto.com And Follow Him on Instagram At: https://www.instagram.com/nampix/ To Watch Nick in Krystle Wright's New Film Visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cCBfClDGxo To Learn More About Visual Revolutionary Visit: http://www.visualrevolutionary.com And Follow On Instagram At: https://www.instagram.com/visualrevolutionary/

Adriane Ohanesian has been on the B&H Photography Podcast in the past and we are very excited to welcome her back to discuss her photojournalistic work in Africa. As many of our listeners will recall, Ohanesian contributed to our podcast throughout 2017 in a serial segment we called “Dispatch,” in which she provided monthly reports on her freelance assignments covering conflict and climate change in Sudan and Somalia. She also narrated the story of a deadly attack she survived while covering a story on illegal mining in Congo. It was a harrowing and tragic account that demonstrates the lengths to which photojournalists will go to cover a story. On today’s episode, Ohanesian updates us on a few of the items we discussed in 2017, including the illegal mining story and her assignment on the last white male rhinoceros in existence, which has since died. She also talks about a recent assignment for National Geographic, covering illegal mining and deforestation in Madagascar, and her work back in Congo covering an Ebola outbreak. In addition, Ohanesian provides insight into her life as a freelance photojournalist, reflects on incorporating video and audio into her workflow to get important stories told, and offers tips on the gear she uses for her arduous and often very remote assignments.         Adriane Ohanesian is a respected photojournalist living in Nairobi and covering news stories throughout East Africa. Her coverage of the civil war in South Sudan garnered her a 2016 World Press Photo Award and she is also the recipient of the 2016 Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award. Anecdotes with insight are an important part of any good conversation, and we certainly heard some wonderful anecdotes from our guests at the OPTIC 2018 Conference. For today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we have cherry-picked a few stories from our conversations with Brian Smith, Seth Resnick, Vincent Versace, and Simon Lewis and have added a segment, with Panasonic Marketing Manager Darin Pepple, to round out the episode. Brian Smith is a Pulitzer-Prize-winning photographer most recognized for celebrity portraiture, but his work comfortably crosses all genres and his list of awards is impressive, including a World Press Photo Award. He is a Sony Artisan of Imagery, Profoto Legend of Light, Adobe Influencer, and X-Rite Master Coloratti. As a luxury lifestyle, destination, food, architecture, and interior photographer, Simon Lewis also understands that versatility is a crucial component to being a successful freelance photographer and, as his anecdote makes clear, some tenacity helps, too. His clients include Aman Resorts, Amazon, JetBlue, Ralph Lauren, Bon Appetit, Prada, and John Varvatos. Seth Resnick can do it all (I’m seeing a trend) and the graphic nature of his work and bold use of color and form make him in-demand across the editorial, travel, commercial, and fine art photography worlds.  Chosen by Photo District News as one of the 30 most influential photographers of the decade, he was an original Canon “Explorer of Light,” consults for Adobe, X-Rite, and Epson, is an Ilford “Master” and is co-founder of D-65, a digital workflow consultancy. A few of our guests’ anecdotes were prompted by Allan’s “rabbit out of a hat” question but, with Vincent Versace, we were captivated and laughing too hard to even get to the question. Versace’s insight on photography comes from a range of disciplines and we learn how acting and some serious common sense influence his work. He is a Nikon Ambassador, recipient of the Smithsonian Award in Media Arts & Entertainment and his photography books, tutorials, and workshops are very popular. After a short break, we speak with Darin Pepple, Consumer Marketing Manager at Panasonic, about Lumix cameras, the evolution of the GH series, and the unique interaction between Lumix photographers and the product developers who continue to improve this innovative camera line. Try new approaches, allow emotions in your photo shoots, take risks, create questions with your photos, and subtract objects from your images are just a few tips that they cover.   Here are the links to Olaf’s work and social media accounts:   Web: https://olafphotoblog.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/olafphoto   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/olaf_photo/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/olaf.sztaba    Marco’s inspirational photo book of the month is called: “Seeing Simplified” - by Olaf Sztaba.   Link to book: https://gumroad.com/l/nfnp Published by OLI Publishing Inc.  (212 pages)   This book is a creative and visual guide and gives you a lot of optical food for thought. The book should be a constant companion on your smartphone or tablet. And if you are ever in a situation, maybe in your own town, and you see nothing interesting to take a photo of, just open a random page of Olaf’s book and challenge yourself to take an image in that style. And this is not to merely copy Olaf’s style, but it may trigger one of those a-ha moments that burns itself into your memory and makes you aware of something, that you may have overlooked all of those years before. Olaf has worked hard for decades to collect these moments and this book gives you a shortcut to decades of photographic experience and inspiration. For only $24.95 you really should not pass on this opportunity and buy Olaf’s book. In each episode, they introduce you to an inspirational photographer of the month and also share an inspirational photo book of the month.
