In this holiday archive special, I'm joined by two remarkable photographers whose work has shaped how we see the world: Joel Meyerowitz and Ed Kashi. Both share how they found their craft, revealing personal stories and the ethos that guides their creative lives. I think, this will stand as one of the most inspirational editions I have edited for the Photowalk show. Joel reflects further upon his time documenting Ground Zero in the Aftermath project of 9/11. As the only photographer granted unrestricted access, he created a comprehensive archive that stands as a testament to resilience and remembrance to this day. He shares how this experience reshaped his perspective on photography and its role in chronicling history. Ed talks with me about 'The Sandwich Generation,' a deeply personal project where he and his wife, filmmaker Julie Winokur, documented their journey of moving cross-country to care for Julie's ageing father, Herb, who suffered from dementia. Through this intimate lens, Ed discusses the emotional complexities of caregiving and challenges the common misconceptions about photojournalism, emphasising its capacity to tell profound personal stories beyond the headlines. This episode is about the narratives that shape our understanding of humanity and the measures of success that go beyond accolades. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to Arthelper and LOWA who sponsor this show, plus our Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. Barbara Davidson, a Pulitzer and Emmy Award-winning photographer, joins Paris on The Paris Chong Show. Davidson discusses her project for *The Globe and Mail*, where she traveled from Los Angeles to New York, documenting swing states and aiming to capture quintessential American scenes. She highlights her photo from Coldwater, Michigan, showing a woman in a hijab at a fair, reflecting the area's large Yemeni community and illustrating a "modern America". Davidson also talks about her journey to becoming an American citizen, and the challenge of maintaining excellence in her work. Her three-week road trip took her to various locations where she observed the local economies and health infrastructures. She shares how she photographed victims of violence in Los Angeles, which led to her Pulitzer Prize and that this work came from a place of pain and healing, and how she transitioned to video, winning her an Emmy. Davidson's upcoming show at Leica alongside Joel Meyerowitz will showcase a more artistic style, while also maintaining her social awareness. She sees herself as a "visual humanitarian," dedicated to telling people's stories. She is currently working on stories about senior evictions in Los Angeles, and the English/French tensions in Montreal. Davidson also reflects on how Instagram has changed photography, noting concerns about authenticity. Howard Greenberg Gallery—founded in 1981 and originally known as Photofind—was the first to consistently exhibit photojournalism and 'street' photography, now accepted as important components of photographic art. Howard Greenberg Gallery maintains diverse and extensive holdings of photographic prints including Eugène Atget, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, André Kertész, William Klein, Gordon Parks, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, Josef Sudek, and Edward Weston on its roster of artists. „Chwile, choć płyną, to mają swoje punkty kulminacyjne. Fotografię Meyerowitza charakteryzuje wyjątkowe wyczucie sytuacji, umiejętność uchwycenia magii codzienności i niepowtarzalny styl, wynikający z ciekawości i otwartości na świat i ludzi. Apart from John Szarkowski and William Eggleston, he is a precursor of color photography in high art world. We also talk custom settings, how to ‘raise' the buttons on the back of your cameras, mask wearing on jobs, EVF v OVF, keeping or selling cameras, the state of Kev's kit and we ask; “Is every picture a story?” We return to the subject of a 'new' Instagram dawn too. Book of the week is Joel Meyerowitz with Wild Flowers and our guest is Matt Searles, a phenomenal photographer from New Zealand, who takes his camera on a mail run each day producing the most incredible documentary and landscape pictures of Mesopotamia.

Episode No. 505 features artists Joel Meyerowitz and Elizabeth James-Perry. Damiani has published a new edition of Joel Meyerowitz's 1983 book "Wild Flowers." The new, expanded edition includes pictures both from the 1983 book, and new pictures that expand on the ways in which Meyerowitz found flowers recurring throughout much of his work. Amazon and Indiebound offer it for around $55. Meyerowitz came to prominence as a street photographer in the 1960s, was a leader in adopting color photography, and has published 26 books, including the classics Cape Light, St. Louis and the Arch, and Aftermath. Along with Ekua Holmes, Elizabeth James-Perry has created a "Garden for Boston" outside the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's main, Huntington Avenue-facing entrance. The installations respond to Cyrus Dallin's monumental bronze sculpture Appeal to the Great Spirit (1909) which has stood at the entrance to the museum for over 100 years. James-Perry is a Aquinnah Wampanoag artist whose work extends coastal Algonquian culture through craft and conceptual projects.

Joel Meyerowitz (born in New York, 1938) is an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. He is a two-time Guggenheim Fellow, a recipient of both the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities awards, and a recipient of the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, and has published over thirty books, including the Aperture titles Legacy (2009), Cape Light (2015), and Seeing Things (2016).  His most recent work is called Provincetown. The town has long been defined by outsiders. A safe haven for the queer community and a getaway for artists, it is a place defined by openness and tolerance.  Throughout the late 1970s and early ’80s Joel Meyerowitz spent his summers there, roaming the seaside with an 8-by-10 camera, making exquisite, sharply observed portraits of families, couples, children, artists, and other denizens of the progressive community. A cast of characters appear and reappear from season to season against a picturesque backdrop of sea, sand, and sun. Provincetown collects one hundred portraits, most never before published, bringing viewers into an idyllic world of self-styled individualism. Tam často fotí a trávi čas so svojou parťáčkou Boony. A prečo bolo fotenie stužkových (“maturiťákov”) najlepšia škola? Joel Meyerowitz was born in the Bronx in 1938 into a neighborhood that offered daily lessons in the divine comedy and tragedies of human behavior. He believes it was that basic “street” education that nurtured his delight in human observation, a perception that is at the heart of his photography. After studying art, art history, and medical illustration at Ohio State University, he worked as an art director in advertising in the early 60’s. In 1962, Robert Frank made photographs for a booklet Meyerowitz designed, and it was while watching Frank work that he discovered that photographs could be made while both the photographer and the subject were in motion! The power of this observation made Meyerowitz quit his job immediately, borrow a camera, and go out onto the streets of New York. He has been on the streets ever since. Meyerowitz began by using color film, not knowing any better, nor aware that photographers of that era believed that black and white was the ‘art’ of photography. During his first days on the street, he met a young graphic designer, Tony Ray-Jones, who, like Meyerowitz, began using color as the most natural means of making photographs. Later that year Meyerowitz met, and became friends with, Garry Winogrand, and together they walked and worked Fifth Avenue daily for nearly five years. The work of Meyerowitz, who is a Guggenheim fellow and a recipient of both the NEA and NEH awards, has appeared in over 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. He was the only photographer to gain unrestricted access to Ground Zero after 9/11, which produced a body of work that led Meyerowitz to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale for Architecture in 2002. His work is in the collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Art Institute of Chicago, and many others worldwide. Meyerowitz lives and works in New York and in Italy.   Resources: Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device. Click here to download for . Maggie just returned to Tuscany after a week in Berlin, where her husband Joel Meyerowitz has a photography retrospective. I was eager to hear about her trip -- and also yearned for her wisdom about where we might find hope in the winter garden. The morning's frost on the fields outside her window gave us both inspiration, as did a poem Maggie keeps on her desktop, by Pablo Neruda: I sat in the garden spattered by the great drops of winter, and it seemed to me impossible that beneath all that sadness, that crumbled solitude, the roots were still at work with no one to encourage them. Joel Meyerowitz has had many careers as a photographer over the past 50 years. He first made a name for himself at 24 as a New York City street photographer in the tradition of Robert Frank. A few years later he switched to color photography at a time when most art critics and gallerists dismissed it as too “commercial.” Later, Meyerowitz delved into landscape photography and portraits. Then, in the months after Sept. 11, 2001, he became the self-designated archivist of Ground Zero, persuading city authorities to grant him complete access to the site despite the fact that it had been designated a crime scene. This month, Meyerowitz’s half-century of work is being honored with a two-part retrospective at the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City and with the publication of a deluxe, two-volume limited-edition monograph of that work titled... "Aftermath," an exhibition of photographs of Ground Zero by Joel Meyerowitz, will be featured at NYU Open House (528 LaGuardia, between Bleecker and West 3rd Streets) from August 20, 2011 through October 13, 2011. Subways: A, B, C, D, E, F, M (West 4th Street). Admission is free and open to the publicThe exhibition draws from Meyerowitz's Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive (Phaidon Press), which Mayor Michael Bloomberg called "an important tribute to the courage and determination exhibited by New Yorkers in the weeks and months following 9/11." Meyerowitz's archive is the only existing photographic record of Ground Zero after the attacks on the World Trade Center. Fenced off and classified as a crime scene, the area was closed off to all photographers, and only scant information was available about the activities in the guarded enclosure. Through sheer persistence, Meyerowitz became the sole photographer to have continued access to the site and describe its transformation over the next nine months from a place of total devastation to cleared bedrock.
