From her humble start as a high school sprinter, Emily Richards rose to the top of NCAA mid-distance running with nine national championships and set the Division III record for 800 meters. Now she's chasing Olympic dreams and is the first guest in our series chronicling the journeys of local stars on their way to the upcoming Eugene Olympic Trials. But beyond her on track accomplishments, you'll appreciate Emily's enthusiasm, passion for her craft, and gratitude for her opportunities. Running is something we get to do, not something we have to do. It's a blessing and privilege. Emily epitomizes that spirit. Questions, comments, or show ideas? Alyssa Coco has a voice that mixes Sarah McLachlan and Emily Richards, while the lyrics are packed full of anxiety and facing real issues in life. This past weekend was a big weekend for D3 Cross Country. Teams are starting to show their true colors and individuals are beginning to have break out races. Tom Sawyer Park played host to the D3 Pre National Meet to give teams and athletes a preview of what's to come in November. We mentioned this in last week's episode that the real season is beginning. Simon Heys and Evie Bultemeyer came away with the individual titles. Both had similar race strategies as they hung out in the pack, matched every move, and waited until it was time to make their own move. Evie is familiar with these big races. She is a 4x All American in Track and in 2019 placed 8th at Cross Country Nationals - yet still sees this as a big win for her career. This seas is different for her as she is off campus getting her Master's Degree and doesn't have the luxury of being around her teammates. However, the power of FaceTime has allow Evie to stay close with her team during this time. She's up to her highest mileage ever and is getting excited for the end of the year meets and hopes to help her team qualify for the National Meet. Simon calls this the biggest win of his career. He's fresh off his first National Meet last spring in the 10k and is hungry to improve upon his 13th place finish. He gets fired up about how strong his conference (OAC) is and how that competition will prepare him for the National meet. With this win, he's beginning to view himself a little differently as a runner and is adjusting his already big goals. This was a great conversation to get insight into their races and hear from current student-athletes. Want more information from this weekend, read our Meet Recap article by Emily Richards. It's another full studio this week as Ann, Ste and Simon welcomed Leo Zullo and Gareth Williams on the show to not talk about their day jobs. Instead we let them tell us all about Safe In Our World, which is the charity they co-founded that has the aim to promote and improve mental health in the videogame industry. They've helped Emily Richards remaster her Bafta award-winning game Fractured Minds, which is available to purchase and download on all major platforms. In a Schaffer-centred start to the show we found out how old Lewis is, what he eats, and what time of the year it is best to wear his headphones. Simon went viral, Ann told us about her special advent calendar, and Ste sang dark songs with his daughter. But most of all, we were disappointed by Google. Cheerio! This season on White Market Podcast: Prepare for a lot of talk about Creative Commons music. We will talk about licenses, about business models, about resilience and about the love that goes into sharing music with others. In the first few episodes, there will be interviews with: Hessel van Oorschot from Tribe of Noise, a platform focused on creating fair and sustainable business opportunities for talented artist; their business model is exclusively based on CC-licensing and they recently acquired Free Music Archive. Emily Richards from ccMixter, the oldest community of musicians focused on Creative Commons music production; they promote remixing and make their works available under CC BY and CC BY-NC licenses. Konrad from ClongClongMoo, a curation service focused on Creative Commons music (althought not exclusively); on top of highlighting records, the website has other valuable resources for free and open music discovery, like the netlabel list There will be more guests and more topics later on, so make sure to subscribe to the podcast and check our website regularly. But before the whole things starts, a quick note of appreciation for the extra help White Market Podcast got this time. Without these people, there would be no new episodes. Jake Cusworth did the new sound imaging, remixing "Fremen" by DarkSunn (who kindly provided the STEMS to do that) Liam Milburn provided the voice work for the new jingles and sweepers Ciaran Edwards redesigned and coded our new fully FLOSS website Ricardo Correia will be helping out with the sound editing and mixing throughout the season. Stay tuned, White Market Podcast will be back soon.
