In this episode on The Empathy Podcast we explore Empathy and Aged Care with Sharon Blackburn CBE. The recent Royal Commission has brought much attention to aged care, and it may appear that empathy and aged care are mutually exclusive. Leanne and Sharon explore how empathy and relationships put the care back in aged care and why it is essential for our loved ones, families, aged care staff, and communities. Sharon shares with us the significance of relationship-centred care and how it can be practised to ultimately humanise the healthcare sector. Sharon is an experienced social carer who has worked in the sector for over 40 years. She has held multiple executive leadership roles within non-profits and for-profit charities. She is passionate about helping people in organisations become the change they want to see in the world. Sharon was awarded a CBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours in 2016 for her contributions to nursing and non-profit organisations. Sharon discusses the importance of involving clients in their own care and learning what matters to them. To truly build relationships with clients, healthcare professionals must acknowledge their thoughts and feelings and act accordingly. Not only does this improve the quality of care experienced by clients but the work engagement and satisfaction experienced by aged care professionals.https://www.empathyfirst.com.auEmail Sharon on sblackburn@ballycara.com

Robert Greenleaf created the theory of servant leadership in 1970 at the age of 66. At the time, he was working at AT&T, where he had risen from lineman into organizational management. “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.” Larry Spears, longtime President/CEO of the Robert K. Greenleaf Center, came up with 10 principles of servant leadership; his list of essential ingredients from moving from a hierarchical autocratic style to one in which is focused on relationships and trust.10 Principles1. For today's method, we have our friend Michael Scott Evans from the Empathy& Podcast take us through a meditation centered around the breath and empathy, the power of feeling with another. The religious traditions of Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and many others often tout the virtue of compassion as the pinnacle of all spiritual effort. Once we can see no separation between ourselves and our neighbor, we can truly love them as ourself, because they are. "Those who possess this wisdom have equal regard for all. They see the same Self in a spiritual aspirant and an outcast, in an elephant, a cow, and a dog. Such people have mastered life. With even mind they rest in Brahman, who is perfect and is everywhere the same." -Krishna (Bhagavad Gita) Find more from Michael Scott Evans at the link below: www.empathyand.com www.methodspodcast.com linktr.ee/methodspodcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/methods/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/methods/support
