We all have storms in life. Crazy making storms. Some that we call the S*it Storms of life. As a guy 40 Plus, we can find ourselves right in the midst of a bunch of these storms, pulling our hair out, if we even have any hair left, or managing through them with ease and grace. My buddy and mentor for my podcasts, Mark Asquith, joins me today to dole out some advice on weathering the storms of life. He’s not quite 40 but, I’m slipping him into the mix because he’s a pretty smart bloke most them time, and even when he’s not, he’s still pretty good to hang with. So let’s get into the storms of life and manage them, even if that means only with a joke and a hot dog! About MarkMark Asquith is a serial entrepreneur who has built globally successful design, marketing, software and digital businesses since he quit his real job in 2005. A passionate podcaster, global keynote speaker and helpful bloke, Mark is the co-founder of Podcast Websites and the creator of Excellence Expected. He has a terribly embarrassing beard. In 2008 he set up his first “real” business. Less than 12 months later he royally screwed it up, having only 60 pounds in the bank and having let his whole team and offices go. Since then, the Hot Dog Kid has learned his lesson and has gone on to found a globally successful design agency, two tech startups, the UK’s #1 business podcast and a personal brand that has created an audience of worldwide fans of his “no shit” attitude. Following a blaze of glory burnout in 2012, he is a regular speaker across the world at tech, business and media events, particularly in the United States. A straight talking, no bullshit millennial speaker. Talks on productivity, startups, work/life balance, personal branding, digital product development, user experience and all aspects of modern marketing. Spends all his speaking fees on hot dogs and beard products. Once heckled Rick Astley enough to upset him Website (https://www.excellence-expected.com/) Hey Guys, Check This Out!Are you a guy who keeps struggling to do that thing? Excellence Expected with Rebel Base Media – Mark Asquith (https://kcrpodcast.com/episode-447-excellence-expected-rebel-base-media-mark-asquith/screen-shot-2019-02-10-at-7-59-35-pm/) As you are aware (or you would not be listening to me right now), I split my time between managing our online radio station, “Evangelism Radio” and balancing the responsibilities of this podcast. And in the process of time, always looking to improve, I came across the hosting platform of all platforms, the “mother of all podcasting platforms” I guess you could say, called “Podcast Websites.” This was tied into “Podcasters Paradise”and of course, The John Lee Dumas of EO Fire fame. Mark Asquith started off in the regular 9-5 shuffle, as most of do. But he soon grew tired (or bored) of that and started his first business, pouring himself completely into building that business, and he soon experienced what “burnout was all about.” I’ll let him go into the details, but suffice it to say, he teamed up the John Lee Dumas and formed “Podcast Websites” and it has grown from there! He also formed “Rebel Based Media”(which we will discuss in a minute) and “Excellence Expected”(which is now known by another name and let Mark tell you about that). He helps others get through those tough first years of owning their own business. Mark is also a key note speaker, a TEDx speaker, podcaster, coach, mentor…and the list could go on and on. Suffice it to say, Mark is probably one of the most experienced podcast marketers that I have had the privilege of meeting. I met him at the Podcast Movement convention in Philadelphia July of 2018 and he has agreed to come on the podcast and share with us today. Help me welcome to the program, coming to us all the way from the United Kingdom, Mark Asquith! Mark, thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to join us today. Ok, the first question I always ask each guest is this. Tell us, in your own words, “Who is Mark Asquith?” I guess the first question, just to lay the background a little bit, tell us about your first business venture on your own. And tell us how that burned you out and what you learned after going all in like that? Has everything you done since then involved branding, marketing and promotion? Now, I want to focus on “Rebel Base Media”but I also want to talk a little bit about Podcast Websites. When did you and John Lee Dumas first come up with the concept of “Podcast Websites?” When I’m asked why I host our podcast on “Podcast Websites,”I find it hard to quantify with words. The best I can come up with is Podcast Websites is a one stop shop, basically, for podcasting. There is the website, the hosting, you can have your blog and I know there is a long list of things I’m not even thinking of right now. I try to explain that it may be cheaper for hosting elsewhere, but by the time you piece meal everything together, it is comparable to everything you would already have on “Podcast Websites.” Can you explain how you created “Podcast Websites”to be everything a podcaster would need, all under one roof? This is your chance to give a shameless plug, brother! Now, correct if I’m wrong, but “Rebel Base Media”is, how can I say this, an “extension” of Podcast Websites? Is that an accurate description? Tell us about “Rebel Based Media”and how it came into being… How can someone use “Rebel Base Media”to build their podcast audience and simplify their podcasting life? I think one of the areas a new podcaster has trouble with is finding their own voice or “Brand” if you will. How can “Rebel Base Media”help a new podcaster, or business owner or non-profit leader, whoever, build their brand and find their voice and grow their audience? I read, somewhere, that you have said, and I’m trying to remember here, that design of everything around your podcast matters more than the actual content in attracting listeners. The brand design, the logo, the interactivity...

Mark says: “Everyone talks about content marketing, but clients generally only do the content bit – we need to get them to focus on the marketing bit. As entrepreneurs, we will always have those inspiring "eureka" moments that make us want to dive in and take action immediately. However, before getting started with your business plan and setting up that landing page, there is one crucial step you need to take. Validating your idea is necessary to making sure you have the right solution for the right audience. In this episode, I sit down with Youpreneur member and podcast host of Excellence Expected, Mark Asquith as he walks us through his entrepreneurial journey so far, how he validated his own ideas and why it's important not just at the beginning of the business but as it continues to grow. We also talk about mastering the art of the customer conversation, asking the right questions and why podcasting takes more than just turning your mic on. Validation does take a little work to do the research and really deliberate, but you'll find it worth your while to ensure that you don't end up wasting your time, effort and resources on something that might not be worth it! This was a great chat with Mark, so sit back, get comfortable and dive in. Essential Learning Points From This Episode:How Mark got started with podcasting and his current business, Podcast Websites. What is the top reason for why so many entrepreneurs haven't picked up podcasting yet Chris and Mark talk about criticism and how it's necessary for the validation process What Mark is excited about when it comes to the future of podcasting. The business world knows my guest today as a straight talking small business expert who helps early stage entrepreneurs navigate their lives and optimise their results. I know him as the guy in the TALK HARD t-shirt who tells me all my ideas are wonderful, then gently reminds me to focus on one thing at a time. Mark Asquith, author of ‘The 14 Day Guide to Cutting Your Working Hours and Increasing Your Impact’, has been working in digital technologies since 2001, and is founder of Podcast Websites, the hosting service for my podcast. His Excellence Expected podcast is the #1 small business podcast on iTunes and in his spare time he runs his design, brand and web agency, HACKSAW. He is the go to expert for all things branding, marketing and start-ups, and his speaking gigs this year alone included Belfast, London, Chicago, Barnsley, Philadelphia, London, Liverpool and Nottingham. A free take-away before we begin: the number one secret to any successful business is relationships. Your clients need to know, like and trust you before you sell ’em a thing, and the way to do it is through content, free content, lots of it. The old adage, give and you shall receive, is alive and thriving in the small business world, it seems. Oh, alright Mark, send me a TALK HARD t-shirt if you must and I’ll send you a pic from my very first Conference on the Gold Coast, We Are Podcast, 2016. Sound exotic, you reckon? Watch this space…
