Proving that we always save the Shat for last, Shat The Movies humbly presents its final film review for 2023: "Philadelphia Experiment 2." It's a movie full of time travel, family drama and big people giving small performances. Closing out the Month of Mark from Minneapolis, this 1993 sci-fi sleeper has all the feels of a prescription-drug ad mixed with military mistakes, questionable casting and wacky cinematography.  In this episode, Dick argues that "Philadelphia Experiment 2" could have presented a more fun view of a dystopian 1993 ruled by Nazis (Ash thought it was plenty fun), and Gene helps him through a "Roger moment" while earning the Nobel Prize for Explaining B Movies. On November 4, 1991, President Reagan stood alongside four other living U.S. Presidents – the first time in history five presidents had ever gathered together before – and officially opened the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. Since that time, millions of visitors have visited our hilltop to experience the life and legacy of our nation's 40th president. And, in those 30 years, we have grown – in 2005 we opened the Air Force One Pavilion which houses President Reagan's Air Force One, President Johnson's Marine One, and a portion of Ronald Reagan's motorcade; in 2011 we renovated all of our galleries; in 2018 we added a hologram of President Reagan, and we've added outdoor displays, including an F14 fighter jet, an F117 stealth fighter jet, and an M1 Abrams tank. And, of course, the Reagan Library is now the final resting place for both President and Mrs. Reagan. In this week's Reagan Forum podcast we go back 30 years today to the opening of the Library, to hear the opening day's ceremonies.

Having the desire to fly fighter jets since seeing the movie “Top Gun,” Chandra Beckman became part of the elite group of women who have flown United States Air Force fighter jets.  Chandra started her AF career in ROTC in 1993, the same year the Department of Defense lifted the ban on women flying combat missions, which opened the door for women to fly fighter jets. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Arizona State University in 1998. After a delay due to an unexpected pregnancy, she attended USAF Pilot Training where she earned an assignment to fly the F-15C Eagle, and was the first woman to fly that aircraft as a mother. During her time flying the F-15C, Chandra supported the defense of the homeland through Operation NOBLE EAGLE and flew combat missions during the opening weeks of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  Following three years flying the F-15C, she was one of only 3 women assigned to fly the first stealth fighter aircraft, the F-117A Nighthawk. During her time flying that aircraft, she deployed in support of security operations to the Korean peninsula, coordinated with media groups to showcase the final F-117 RED FLAG, and mentored school children and Airmen of all ranks. Taking a break from flying, Chandra was stationed in the Republic of Korea where she was assigned to the Combined Air Operations Center. While there she developed and implemented the first Operations Center training program for new personnel and worked jobs in both offensive and defensive combat training roles. Chandra then went on to be an Instructor Pilot at the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program. However, health challenges that had begun while she was stationed in the Republic of Korea finally grounded her from flying.  From 2009-2017, she earned a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Science and held multiple jobs which included: Director of Staff for the 82 Training Wing, an organization with a permanent staff of over 3,000 people worldwide serving a student population of almost 80,000 annually; and Director of Operations for RED FLAG, the organization responsible for establishing the framework to train US and coalition nation members in the world’s most realistic air combat scenarios. Retired from active duty, Chandra enjoys having the freedom to travel the world with her husband and be available for her children whenever and wherever they need her to be. She is a member of the Veteran Advisory Team for the National Foundation for Integrative Medicine and looks forward to helping others in that capacity.

This Garage Hour is one of the classic free-fire episodes, kicked off right with tales of Boris Said and his plans to beat Greg Biffle's ass, and that sets the tone for the whole rest of the thing.  Hostus Maximus Justin Fort goes after everyone, from people on Rascals to the lunchtime drunks and stoners at Chrysler who were fired for getting...  wait for it... drunk and stoned at lunch.  Of course, the UAW got them their jobs back, so those drunks and stoners are presumably still building Dodges. Dirty Dave takes the time to go after Rick Perry, and then board-opp Barrister Hilton goes after Dirty Dave. It's not 100% grim, though - there's shouts out to Toyota for their stay-at-home doggedness following the arsing Japan got at the hands of the Fukishima tsunami, the Garage Hour goons applaud the Air Force for parking a cruise missile up China's nose during the Serbian affair, and there's a bunch of good tracks backing this show. So many targets, so few triggers...  It's the Garage Hour, alright, the rootinest, tootinest, highfalutinest piece of gearhead on air since Top Gear full of beer.

Military History Podcast

This episode was written by Brian Liddicoat, a real estate attorney in Northern California. The words Groom Lake and Area 51 have achieved an almost myth-like quality thanks to interest in UFOs and shows like the X-Files. But the real history of this base is even more interesting than the fiction. The names Area 51 and Groom Lake refer to a large flight test base in the Nevada Desert, about 100 miles north of Las Vegas. The facility was originally built by Lockheed in the 1950s to support early secret tests of the U-2 spyplane. It has hosted the first flights of some of Americas most ground-breaking aircraft, including the F-117 stealth fighter. Now operated by the US Air Force as a detachment of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, the Groom Lake facility continues to secretly test Americas most secret aviation technology.
