Watch This Episode On YouTubeCase Jernigan wins at so many things -- animation, gamemaking, filmmaking, and having without a doubt the best setting for recording a podcast episode. Normally, I edit out all background noise but with the birds chirping, I just could. not. do. it. His sound is such a mood. And I created special podcast animation art to celebrate such a fantastic artist.Case is a true Renaissance man who, not surprisingly, has found himself in Italy, and our discussion demonstrates the sheer breadth of talents that he brings to his art.His film, NOGGIN, now available to watch as a Vimeo Staff Pick, offers the same extraordinarily uplifting experience as this conversation with Case.In this conversation, we discuss:how the Slamdance screenings went;does he see himself as a filmmaker, in light of so many other artistic talents? "to me, they are all linked";on his website, Case talks about making art about "masculinity and illness." We talk about the rise of performative masculinity and how he views it relative to the art he creates.what we should know before watching NOGGIN and the thought process behind making the film;was it a way for him to work through his MS diagnosis, through his art? and how did he get from his diagnosis to where he is now?why Slamdance?; it must take a special film festival to get on a plane from Florence, Italy;what's next for him?Case's Indie Film Highlights: STOLEN KINGDOM (2025) dir. by Joshua Bailey; FISHMONGER (2023) dir. by Neil FerronLinks:Watch NOGGIN As A Vimeo Staff PickFollow Case On InstagramVisit Case Jernigan's WebsiteSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

In this episode: Fish. What is the best type of fish to use for a curry or stir-fry or to cook on the barbecue? What should we look for when buying fresh fillets at the supermarket or fishmonger? What are the foolproof techniques for shucking oysters and peeling prawns? Anthony Yotis and Laura di Florio Yotis know good seafood, and they know how to make it more accessible for home cooks. Anthony is the son of fishmonger Konstantinos Yotis, who ran a legendary seafood stall at Footscray's wholesale market for more than 40 years. Together with his wife Laura, Anthony has brought those years of expertise to their shop, and now to their debut cookbook. The Fishmonger's Son is an invaluable collection of information, advice and recipes based on the most popular fish and shellfish to cook at home. It includes general cooking, storage and preparation tips, plus 70 delicious family recipes, from burgers, bao and tacos to pies, pasta and more. This is the ultimate home cook's guide to buying, preparing and cooking the incredible seafood we have available in Australia.
Anthony Yotis learnt all there was to know about seafood from his father who was a fishmonger at Melbourne's Footscray wholesale seafood markets for more than 40 years.A few years ago he opened his own shop called The Fishmonger's Son and, alongside his wife Laura, has just published his own cookbook with the same title.
Anthony Yotis is a second generation Melbourne fishmonger, always with an eye to seeking out quality produce.

The I-SOON data leak has allowed us to identify FishMonger, a group notorious for the cyberattacks against Hong Kong universities back in 2019, as I-SOON. This contractor also developed a platform for tracking gambling activity, linking the group to Operation ChattyGoblin. MustangPanda conducted a series of attacks on cargo shipping companies in Norway, Greece, and the Netherlands, even compromising the ships' systems. Since the Hamas-led attack on Israel in 2023, Iran-aligned groups have shifted focus to impact attacks. Original Air Date: May 2, 2023The Funky Fishmonger Mark Drabich started cutting fish at a local seafood market when he was 15 years old. In high school, on his breaks from college, Mark worked at various seafood markets. Being the first to graduate from college in his family, he eventually got a job at Johnson & Johnson which didn't last long and he wound up opening his own fish market.Since then, the business has grown from a small shop in Clinton (where he was for 23 years) to its current location in Lebanon. After he purchased the building from the his landlord, Mark now has a full seafood market and take out location. Right next door is Sunken Silo Brew Works, which creates a great opportunity for patrons to grab a beer and enjoy some fresh seafood which they pick up and cut daily. https://www.metroseafood.com/@metropolitanseafood@funkyfishmonger1320 Rt. 22 West Lebanon, NJThank you to our sponsors:Albert & Whitney CPAs: awcpasllc.comShanghai Jazz: shanghaijazz.comMayo Performing Arts Center: mayoarts.org/events-calendarNJspots: NJspots.comMurphy, Schiller, Wilkes: murphyllp.comContact the show: mike@greetingsfromthegardenstate.comSupport the show
When your boss tells you to do something, you do it. When your boss is Troy Johnson, food critic and Chief Content Officer of San Diego Magazine, texting you: “I just left Tunaville. He's doing amazing stuff. Get Tommy on the podcast,” well, you get Tommy Gomes on the Happy Half Hour podcast. Gomes, a commercial fisherman by trade and blood, is no stranger to the airwaves and pages of SDM. He's been a guest on the pod a few times before, and we've written about him glowingly because of the work he's doing to improve San Diego's fisheries and the shopping options for the people who eat from them. These days, Gomes runs TunaVille, a seafood shop at Driscoll's Wharf in San Diego Harbor that serves local, only. It opened last May. The fish is caught by residents on city boats, and is delivered 10 feet away to the storefront. “It never sees the back of a truck, our fish,” Gomes says in the episode. Tunaville is a partnership with another fisherman and local seafood icon, Mitch Conniff of Mitch's Seafood, and a handful of other local fishing families who have bought in. Restaurants like Herb & Wood, Solare, and Juan Jasper, for example, are clients, sourcing their treats from the sea from Gomes. Gomes is also tinkering with different fish preparations, some of which we sample on air. He's experimenting with dry aging tuna—traditions popular in Japan and Spain, for example—and he brought in everything from a gorgeous 15-week aged bluefin slab to mojama, a cured tuna muscle not unlike Jamón Ibérico. It can be found mainly on tables in bars in Southern Spain, and not many places else. Except for TunaVille. While he's doing all this, Gomes also has a top-rated show on Outdoor Channel, aptly called The Fishmonger. In it, he travels around the country telling the stories of fishing families and their plights of declining stocks, closed fisheries, tough regulations, and other woes of a struggling American industry. We talk about all of this and other issues with sustainability and greenwashing in this episode. We also get into some news: Troy and I discussed our end-of-2023 articles detailing the best new restaurants in San Diego and dining trends we saw last year, some of which we expect to continue into next year (inflation, omakase-everything, more actually-good Italian restaurants, bakeries); cake donut wizards Sidecar Donuts will be opening a new spot on Kettner Boulevard in Little Italy; and Food Network star Lauren Lawless will be opening Ramen World, a serve-your-own spot somewhere in Mid-City.
It's easy to miss Muli. There isn't much else on the block. It doesn't have a big shopfront to draw your gaze. Just one small sign, some light jazz music humming from the speakers and colourful rosebushes out the front. Having opened in late winter, the seafood and oyster-centric Carlton restaurant has already made a big splash. Plus, a nostalgic (Vegan) milk bar with serious sandwiches and country-bakery staples opens in Carlton North. If you pitched the story we discuss in this episode as a fictional film script you'd be laughed out of the room … so shocking, so unlikely is this tale of crisis. In 2005 Steve Gallant was convicted of the brutal revenge murder of a man he claimed had attacked his then girlfriend. After being sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum 17-year term, Steve made a vow to never again use violence. He kept that vow for 14 and a half years until, on November 29th 2019, he was allowed out on day release for the first time to attend an educational event at Fishmonger's Hall near London Bridge. On that day Usman Khan, a former prisoner, unleashed terror – killing two young graduates Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones. Steve, along with two others, confronted Khan, who was wearing what turned out to be a fake suicide vest, and chased him out of the building, bizarrely using huge Narwhal tusks and a fire extinguisher. With no concern for their own safety, they took him down before armed police then ended his life. The reaction to Steve's incredible bravery was mixed. For some, including then PM Boris Johnson, he was lauded as a hero. But for others it raised questions about his rehabilitation … about whether his reactions on that day demonstrated a continued willingness to use violence.Steve was eventually awarded the Queen's Medal for Gallantry and granted a Royal Prerogative of Mercy, reducing his minimum term by 10 months. He details his time in prison, essentially a story of change in the face of daily crisis, in his compelling new book The Road To London Bridge. And in this conversation we explore his journey – from a difficult and violent childhood, through the shame of his appalling crime, his determination to change as he navigated his way through the prison system, to that day of truly astounding, instinctive bravery. This is a crisis conversation unlike any we have had. My thanks to Steve for joining us.Steve's Crisis Comforts 1. Perspective – Knowing what you have and understanding there is always someone worse off than you.2. Cup of tea – I love Yorkshire tea bags. You can't beat it. Yorkshire Tea was a lifesaver in prison.3. Exercise – Staying physically healthy helps the mind and in prison keeps the odd idiot at bay.LinksStream/Buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bmSome Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.ukYour Daily Practice: Sleep by Myndstream: https://open.spotify.com/track/5OX9XgJufFz9g63o2Dv2i5?si=b2f9397c92084682 Watch the documentary - London Bridge: Facing Terror https://www.channel4.com/programmes/london-bridge-facing-terror/on-demand/74280-001 Read Steve's book – ‘The Road to London Bridge' - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Road-London-Bridge-Steve-Gallant/dp/1399604856 Host: Andy CoulsonCWC production: Louise Difford and Jane SankeyWith special thanks to Global For all PR and guest approaches please contact – podcast@coulsonpartners.com

Niall Sabongi fell in love with seafood as a child living on the east coast of Ireland, where his father would bring him to the beach to find cockles and mussels to eat for dinner. Today, Niall is at the forefront of the conversation around Irish seafood. As a chef, he founded fish-centric favorite spots like Klaw, Saltwater Grocery, and most recently, The Seafood Cafe. While the stereotypical Irish ocean-based meal might be fish and chips or chowder, at Niall's restaurants, the incredibly wide range of Irish seafood is on display. Everything from oysters to crab to day boat scallops, as well as less common preparations like ceviche and cod collar, is prepared with expert attention and respect for the product.Niall also founded Sustainable Seafood Ireland, a wholesaler focusing on wild-caught Irish seafood. SSI supplies his restaurants and others, making sure that the freshest fish from Ireland's coasts gets on the plate at some of Ireland's best restaurants. During the pandemic, SSI pivoted and made their products available to individuals rather than restaurants, which helped increase general awareness of the truly incredible bounty of Irish wild seafood (something that historically has not been so widespread as it is today). We spoke to Niall about what drove him to focus on seafood, his evolution from chef to entrepreneur, why it's important to directly support independent, small boat fishermen, the seasonality of fish, and using oysters for water reclamation projects.Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. Our guest is Arimi Asai who is the co-founder of Fish & Dish Sakanaya Asai based in Tokyo. Fish & Dish Sakanaya Asai is a unique and highly inspiring fishmonger. When we buy seafood, most of us will go to a supermarket and purchase a piece of fish without knowing its whole shape. It is easy and convenient but the process reminds us that we have become very distant from how we used to eat fish. Arimi and her husband Kazuhiro have a mission to shrink the distance. Their innovative mom & pop business has no address and they are ready to deliver the freshest fish straight from the market to wherever their clients are. Not only that, they offer various catering and educational services to teach how a whole fish is broken down and comes to your plate. Their business started in 2015 and the idea of a fishmonger without a storefront has become popular through word-of-mouth recommendations among foodies and environmentalists alike. In this episode, we will discuss how Kazuhiro and Arimi came up with the concept of the nomadic fishmonger, the unique entertaining and educational programs they offer, how their business can support the brighter, sustainable future of seafood consumption, and much, much more!!!Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network.
