In this episode we talk to Mark Holmes and Mike Ward about the Blue Light approach, which aims to challenge the belief that nothing can be done with drinkers who may be deemed as 'not wanting to change'. The Blue Light approach aims to show there are a range of positive strategies that can be used to manage risk, reduce harm and promote change. We discuss the ideas and myths behind 'change resistant drinkers', and explore what approaches and strategies are most effective when working with people with severe alcohol problems who are not currently engaging in alcohol treatment or other support. Mike Ward is from a Social Work background but has worked most of his career in the alcohol and drug field. He is the co-author of the Blue Light Manual on Working with Change Resistant Drinkers but also other practical guides including Safeguarding Vulnerable Dependent Drinkers. He is the author of over thirty serious case reviews about individuals with alcohol and/or drug use disorders.Mark Holmes. BSc, RMN, SPMH has been a mental health nurse for over 30 years. Mark was being twice awarded Nursing Times Awards; The Mental Health Nurse of the Year in 2012 and LTC Team of the year 2016. He also works as an associate for Alcohol Change UK co-authoring the Blue Light Project and has had over 20 publications. He currently sits on UK alcohol clinical guidelines expert group, and Alcohol Care Teams Steering group (ACTION). Details of the Blue Light approach can be found here. It is an initiative to develop alternative approaches and care pathways for drinkers who are not in contact with treatment services, but who have complex needs. It challenges the belief that only drinkers who show clear motivation to change can be helped, and sets out positive strategies that can be used with this client group. The Blue Light manual sets out these strategies in detail and offers a fundamental positive message that change is possible. It contains:Tools for understanding why individuals may not engageRisk assessment tools which are appropriate for drinkersHarm reduction techniques workers can useAdvice on crucial nutritional approaches which can reduce alcohol-related harmQuestions to help non-clinicians identify where individuals may be at risk of serious health problemsManagement frameworksGuidance on legal frameworks Support the showIf you are interested in one-to-one support for your drinking with Dr James Morris, contact him at DrJamesMorris.com For more episodes visit https://alcoholpodcast.buzzsprout.com/Follow us at @alcoholpodcast on X and Instagram

And we'd like to welcome you to the MinistryWatch podcast. Warren On today's program, Liberty University reaches a settlement with former president Jerry Falwell Jr. after years of back-and-forth lawsuits between the two parties. Now, they say they are putting the past behind them. We'll have details. And, a small university in North Carolina is beating the odds…while other Christian colleges face closure, this school is thriving. We take a look at what they're doing. Also, Steven Furtick's Elevation Church released its annual report—the Charlotte-area church saw revenue of more than $108-million in 2023. Natasha But first, the leadership at Gateway Church continues its shakeup following revelations that its founding pastor Robert Morris abused a minor in the 1980s. Warren: Seven weeks after Robert Morris resigned from Gateway Church after Cindy Clemishire publicly claimed he abused her when she was 12 years old, Gateway has announced that Morris' son, James Morris, is stepping away from the church. James Morris was slated to take over church leadership after his father's impending retirement in 2025. But after Clemishire's claims went public, Robert Morris admitted “moral failure" with a “young lady” before resigning as the Texas megachurch's lead pastor. Weeks later, James Morris and three other elders announced they would temporarily step down to allow room for a third-party investigation. But last week, in a special announcement to the congregation, Gateway elder Tra Willbanks announced that James Morris and his wife, Bridgette Morris, had decided to permanently relinquish their positions at Gateway. Natasha: How did the congregation take that? Warren: Church attendees gave them a standing ovation. Then Willbanks said Gateway elders support James and Bridgette Morris' desire to establish a church in the future. I should mention that James and Bridgette Morris are not the only ones to have left in the fallout of Robert Morris' resignation. According to the leadership pages on its website, Gateway has made additional changes to its staff and elder board. It removed former-felon-turned-Prison Ministry Campus Pastor Stephen Wilson after Wilson's past sex charges from 2002 involving a minor became public. Natasha: Who is going to minister as the church moves forward? Warren: Willbanks informed congregants that Max Lucado, a popular author and teaching minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, and Swedish pastor Joakim Lundqvist, will be filling leadership roles at the church. Lucado will become the interim teaching pastor, preaching at Gateway about twice a month. Lundqvist will share preaching duties with Lucado and take on a pa...

In February's podcast we spoke to Dr James Morris, Research Fellow at London South Bank University, about how the model of ‘alcoholism' evolved and led to beliefs about alcohol problems being heavily focused on the severe end of the spectrum.Dr Morris discusses how Alcoholics Anonymous, despite helping a great many people in their recovery, reinforces this model and leads to people failing to recognise their own issues with alcohol. Discussing why this model can cause harm, Dr Morris stated:“I think the main way it prevents progress is through ‘othering', essentially the process of classifying alcohol problems as belonging to an ‘other'. The alcoholic stereotype is drawn on heavily for that. We see lots of heavy drinking groups point to the ‘alcoholic other' to distance their own drinking and protect their own drinking identify." Episode two of the series highlights Highland Elementary in the Inglewood Unified School District, which received state emergency funds. Since April 2018, the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE) has been involved with the district, and the enactment of AB 1840 in September 2018 brought significant changes. This law shifted the management of financially struggling districts from a state-centered approach to local control, involving new fiscal and academic responsibilities. As a result, Inglewood Unified is now led by Los Angeles County Superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo, County Administrator Dr. James Morris, and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Bernadette Lucas. The first part of the episode focuses on piloting the IAM program at Highland Elementary, under Principal Mr. Jones, with plans to consider its district-wide implementation. The upcoming second part will explore the role of teacher leadership, collaboration, and data-driven strategies in the success of the Intensive Assistance Model at Highland Elementary, emphasizing student-specific needs.

Are you seeking a healthier relationship with alcohol? Join us as we speak with James Morris, an addiction researcher with personal experience in navigating alcohol consumption. Listen in as James shares his compelling journey from heavy drinking during his undergraduate years to finding success in controlled drinking, while emphasising the importance of setting clear boundaries and adhering to recommended guidelines. Together, we delve into the role of beliefs and expectations in our relationship with alcohol, exploring how cultural conditioning and our social networks can shape our drinking habits. We discuss taking periods of abstinence and examine the criticism surrounding "month off" approaches, ultimately acknowledging that moderation can lead to long-term well-being. James also shares valuable insights from various studies on controlled drinking, success rates, and the importance of using terms like "mindful drinking" or "low-risk drinking" instead of implying continued addiction. We discuss the complexities of addiction and the concept of relapse, asserting that recovery is a process that requires ongoing effort and self-awareness. In this episode Dr James Morris evaluates the Huberman Lab's alcohol episode, particularly addressing why the language and terms used around alcohol problems are important. For instance, whilst the Huberman Lab's episode provides a detailed description of the ways alcohol can affect the brain, body and health, in using alcoholism terminology it overlooks a number of important issues. Notably, alcoholism is a non-scientific concept and embedded with stigma and myths about alcohol problems and their causes. Dr Morris therefore discusses why, except when people self-identify as 'alcoholics' (for instance as per Alcoholics Anonymous), scientists and the general public at large should avoid using alcoholism terminology, and instead consider terms like alcohol problems, alcohol dependence or alcohol use disorder. You can view this podcast on Youtube here. AI chatbots such as ChatGPT have been making headlines recently, leading to speculation about the future of AI. In this special episode, we hear from computer scientists about their hopes for the next ten, twenty, and fifty years of the field. Joseph Newcomer, Tom Mitchell, Manuela Veloso, José Moura, Roger Dannenberg, James Morris, Pamela McCorduck, and Alex Waibel—all well-known for their research in AI—discuss the potential of the field and the ethical, sociopolitical, and environmental impacts we may see in the coming years. Artificial intelligence has deep roots at Carnegie Mellon University—it was home to founders Herbert Simon and Allen Newell—and the university continues to be at the center of its development. In some versions of the future, your alarm clock app will be able to adjust itself based on the weather. In others, chatbots will read, answer, and manage overflowing email inboxes, and an AI singer might form an AI band to make AI music. As this technology becomes more ubiquitous, it will continue impacting our world in ways we cannot always predict.

PART ONEEverything a Hornet could want from a game of football. Graham Taylor match day - tick. Gianluca Vialli tribute - tick. Decimated squad still - tick. Choudhury back in midfield - tick. Youth players in the squad - tick. Tactical plus personnel change at half time - tick. 17 year old scores on debut on the 72nd minute - tick. Sarr scores penalty - tick. Referee is still a twat and then some - tick tick tickety tick!Loads to unpack - loads to chat about - Pete tries to get everyone to work out who was man of the match and he completely fails to get a consensus as most people had a really good game, Bayo's slow walk to freedom doesn't go down well when being subbed - but calm voices remind us that he tried, He scored against Norwich and he was probably disappointed at being taken off - but still. The story of the day though is 17 year old Tobi Adeyemo scoring on his league debut and a host of young players doing well. Cathcart is outstanding, people are asking if Kamara can walk back into the starting 11 after James Morris continues to improve, Kone in midfield gives us tempo and progressive passing, Sarr is running with the ball again AND we had a tricky Brazilian winger make his debut and get involved in the two goals - like we said a lot to unpack and this is just part one!!Huge thanks to our Patreons:Boyd MayoverColin PayneGary Wood Karl CampionUncle RonKevin CremenJohn Thekanady(The Big Le) BoffskiGreg TheakerMalcolm WIlliamsJason RoseMichael AbrahamsIan BaconKen GreenNick Niewland& PD FDNSYE is part of the TalkSPORT fan network. This Podcast has been created and uploaded by Do Not Scratch Your Eyes. So dreams do come true after all! On the 6th Graham Taylor matchday, in the significant 72nd minute, Watford Academy graduate Tobi Adeyemo opened the scoring for the Hornets on his home debut to create the latest in a long line of memorable matchday moments at WD18. Jon, Jas, Colin and Mike gathered after the 2-0 win to discuss the game and the key issues arising from it, including what might happen in the rest of the transfer window, whether Hassane Kamara will get back into the side over James Morris, as well as, of course, a nod to the great Graham Taylor. It was a good day. Here's our take. This is From the Rookery End. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Britain has tried and failed to reach the top of Everest for decades. George Mallory and Sandy Irvine disappeared on the mountain in 1924. There were various British expeditions during the 1930s - all unmitigated failures. The Second World War interrupted the race to conquer Everest. But by 1951, with Tibet closed by communist China, a new unexplored route through Nepal was available. The Swiss expedition had nearly succeeded in 1952. The French are scheduled to climb in 1954. For John Hunt's British team in 1953 the pressure is on. It is now or never. Meanwhile, back in London, a different race begins. If the British get to the top it's the scoop of the century for whichever newspaper can report the story first. The Times pays £10,000 to have its reporter James Morris, later Jan Morris, embedded with the expedition. The world is waiting for news of success from the British expedition on Mount Everest. James Morris, later to become Jan Morris, is a reporter from The Times newspaper embedded with the team on the mountain. When news arrives that Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay have reached the summit, he must find a way to get the news to London without it leaking to other journalists waiting in Kathmandu. Morris delivers the news via a secret code. As the climbing team make their way down the mountain crowds gather to greet the heroes.
