Frontex, the EU border agency is armed and is the only EU body to have a uniform. It's task is to guard the EU's borders and to implement the aggressive push back of migrants trying to escape war and poverty to reach Europe. With an increasing budget it also operates unaccountably. But as the EU tries to maintain "Fortress Europe" it's own system designed to maintain free-movement of labour within the Schengen Agreement area is beginning to fall apart. There are increasing numbers of instances of restrictions by individual countries on the Agreement's operation or of its suspension. The massive contradictions at the heart of the EU's management of migration are becoming impossible to ignore.

In 2015, hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and repression were trying to reach safe havens in Europe. From his home in Norway, Tommy Olsen decided to travel to Greece, a major gateway for migrants and refugees. He joined hundreds of volunteers  helping the new arrivals and later created an NGO, the Aegean Boat Report, which monitors the plight of asylum seekers in Europe.Today, Olsen is a wanted man in Greece, caught up in a crackdown on refugees and people trying to defend their right to asylum.“I didn't know what I walked into,” Olsen says.Mary Lawlor, the UN special rapporteur on human rights defenders, has condemned Greece's harsh migration policies and the way its government is targeting activists like Olsen. But she says Europe as a whole is also to blame.“The whole notion of migration is a dirty word now,” she says. “The whole notion of refugees is a dirty word now.”This week on Reveal, reporters Dinah Rothenberg and Viola Funk from the Berlin podcast studio ACB Stories take us to Greece, where refugees and human rights defenders face legal and sometimes physical attacks from authorities trying to seal the country's borders. EU governments are outdoing each other in introducing tough anti-immigration measures, embracing policies that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. Poland is pushing to suspend the right to asylum, Germany has reinstated border controls, and Italy has opened two centres to process asylum seekers outside its borders. Now, EU leaders are considering ramping up deportations, aiming to send desperate people back to their countries of origin. All these measures point in the same direction: a Fortress Europe. Meanwhile, parties pushing for stricter immigration controls are gaining power in several EU countries and making significant strides in elections. And many citizens in host countries, feeling neglected by their governments and suffering from stagnant economic conditions, are increasingly hostile to migrants, seeing them as a burden on public resources and a threat to job security. What's really driving this new clampdown on migration? What does it mean for the future of Europe's approach to migration and human rights? And in this current political climate, what should our response be? Join Yanis Varoufakis, Miguel Duarte, Amir Kiyaei, Federico Dolce and Marie-Olivia Badarne as discuss Europe's migration policies and what it means for Europe. Tune in live and share your questions!

This week, we're sharing a presentation from the 2023 Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair in so-called Asheville, NC. From the presentation: The Mediterranean Sea is Europe's deadliest border. For years, non-state actors like Sea-Watch and other NGO's have played a part in humanitarian search-and-rescue operations. In spite of legal repression and the technical challenges of maintaining a “civil fleet”, anarchists, anti-fascists, and other activists try to stop needless death at sea. Hear a report back from a wayward American yacht-punk who spent the summer doing rotations on two different SAR (Search And Rescue) ships. We'll discuss the general political situation, the reality of everyday operations and how you could get involved. It is not only in the U-S and UK that border protection's on the ballot. Yes, the European Parliament vote on a migration pact was always going to be a nail biter, especially two months out from EU elections. We will ask about the result and about burden sharing, this as the numbers of those crossing the Mediterranean hit their highest since 2015.  Too much or too little? What goes for migration policy goes for the EU as a whole: after all, protecting so-called fortress Europe is Brussels' prerogative while immigration policy - deciding what foreign labor's needed for an aging continent - that is up to member states. What is the way forward? Produced by Andrew Hilliar, Rebecca Gnignati and Juliette Brown.

Come siamo arrivati fin qui? E soprattutto, come ne usciremo? As the dawn of November 8, 1942 broke, a wave of uncertainty swept across the decks of the Allied invasion fleet. Thousands of American and British soldiers, sailors, and airmen cast nervous glances at each other, their faces lit intermittently by the soft glow of their vessels' lights reflected off the undulating Mediterranean waters. They were about to embark on a mission unprecedented in its scale and audacity: Operation Torch, the largest amphibious invasion undertaken thus far in World War II. This operation wasn't taking them to the beaches of France or the islands of the Pacific. Instead, they were sailing towards the shores of French North Africa, a region dominated by the Vichy French government, a puppet of Adolf Hitler's seemingly invincible Nazi regime. The goal was to open a new front against the Axis powers, to relieve pressure on the beleaguered Soviet Union, and ultimately, to strike a blow against Hitler's Fortress Europe.  Operation Torch was a gamble, one borne of strategic necessity and fraught with diplomatic and military risks. Yet, in the grand epic of World War II, it emerged as a pivotal chapter, an event that transformed the course of the war and set the stage for the final push towards victory. This is the story of Operation Torch: a saga of audacious strategy, brave men, uncertain alliances, hard-fought battles, and the forging of a path to victory from the heat and dust of North Africa. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ww2-stories/support

In today's episode we sit down and talk with Benedik Kern, about the asylum system in Germany and the EU. Our guest tells us about the work that his organization is doing organizing so-called “church asylums” and “citizen asylums”, wherein churches and individual citizens offer safe places for people avoiding the Dublin system to hide from authorities. The main topic of the discussion is the coming change in the EU asylum system. It entails the outsourcing of the entire asylum procedure outside the EU, to camps in bordering countries that are considered safe. With this, there will be no more asylum procedure within the EU borders per se, fundamentally changing the whole movement landscape. The new law first has to be voted in the EU parliament and then implemented by individual countries in their national legal system, thus taking some years to come into effect. We talk with Benedikt about ways we can fight the consolidation of Fortress Europe, and how this must necessarily entail at least regional cooperation between groups and movements. ===== Re(Sources): Institute for Theology and Politics https://www.itpol.de/ Church Asylum homepage https://www.kirchenasyl.de Citizens' asylum affinity group (in Münster , Germany) https://buergerinnenasylmuenster.blackblogs.org/ Materials on the asylum situation (via PRO ASYL, an organization fighting for the rights of asylum seekers) https://www.proasyl.de/thema/eu-asylpolitik/ https://www.proasyl.de/news/faq-zur-geplanten-reform-des-gemeinsamen-europaeischen-asylsystems-geas/ https://www.proasyl.de/en/news/ceas-breaches-of-core-legal-principles-are-going-to-become-the-new-normal/ Benedikt's article on church asylum and an interview about its 40th anniversary in August 2023 https://www.buergergesellschaft.de/fileadmin/pdf/gastbeitrag_kern_210520.pdf https://www.katholisch.de/artikel/46751-theologe-kirchenasyl-entscheidend-fuer-relevanz-der-kirchen About the deportation of Moldavian workers from Germany https://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/warum-so-viele-moldawier-aus-berlin-abgeschoben-werden-5046916.html Artwork by Saad Shahriar of postcolonial cafe and unrest radio flickr: @unrestradio apple podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/de/podcast/unrest-radio/id1659525221 Music: Comunitate, by Sofia Zadar spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3F4Ec4iFdVp4Pmzhw2Zrd1 fb: @sofiazadar

Besa Luci in conversation with Gorana Mlinarević and Lura Pollozhani.Migration is a topic people in the Balkans are far too familiar with. Whether we're talking about the current economic migration to the West that is draining the region, or the millions who fled their homes in the 1990s due to the break-up of Yugoslavia and the ensuing wars, there's hardly a single person who doesn't have some first or second-hand experience with migration. The topic of migration became salient again to the Balkans in 2015, when hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and a host of Middle Eastern and North African countries, fleeing war and poverty, made their way across what became known as “the Balkan route.”Though the difficult images of bedraggled people walking for hundreds of miles inspired tremendous displays of solidarity and support, the longer term policy and political response of much of Europe was a re-commitment to blocking, with barbed wire and police batons, the refugee paths up through Europe's southern border.Migration remains as relevant as ever for the Balkans, Europe and the globe. Kosovars remain in a seemingly never-ending visa regime by the EU and Albanians are the target of government and media campaigns of xenophobia in the U.K. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion in 2022 initially received great affection and care across the EU — though this highlighted a discrepancy between Ukrainians' warm welcome and the EU's treatment towards other equally deserving refugees.Gorana Mlinarević and Lura Pollozhani joined us on this episode to discuss what is going on in the Balkans and in the EU in terms of migration.Gorana Mlinarević, wrote an article for K2.0 back in 2021 titled “Why we must show feminist solidarity with people on the long road west?” that explored the idea of “Fortress Europe,” that is, how Europe has walled itself off and often refused to offer shelter to those who need it. She is an independent researcher who explores the intersections between identity politics and the economic and social realities of post-war societies.Lura Pollozhani is a researcher at the Centre for Southeast European Studies at the University of Graz. She focuses on issues related to women, radicalization and social movements. She most recently wrote for K2.0 about the EU's continued slowness at welcoming North Macedonia and its citizens into Europe's institutions. This episode is produced as part of Human Rightivism, a project funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and implemented by the Community Development Fund. IN today's episode, we speak with Yambio David Oliver, founder of the campaign group Refugees in Libya.    He tells us why he had to flee his home in South Sudan, about working in a gold mine in Chad and why he was forced to make the deadly desert crossing into Libya.   We hear about his time in the North African country, where he was treated like a slave, forced to join a militia, and made multiple attempts to escape across the Mediterranean.    He tells us about the Libyan Coastguards, who pushed him back to Libya from Maltese waters, about the police raids on refugees in Tripoli, and how the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) failed to protect them.    He tells us how he brought international attention to the plight of refugees in Libya, how his activism made him a target for the militias, and how he finally managed to escape the country.    ---Show notes---   For more on Refugees In Libya, see their blog here: refugeesinlibya.org, and The Civil Fleet's coverage here: bit.ly/3dwbsD7    Follow Refugees in Libya on Twitter: @RefugeesinLibya  You can read The Civil Fleet's previous interviews with Yambio here: bit.ly/3phm633 and here: bit.ly/3PmmcRy    Here's a response from the UNHCR on the situation outside its community day care centre in Tripoli in January: bit.ly/3bPFCAP   Early on in the interview, Yambio refers to himself as an IDP, an internally displaced person. The French town of Calais is at the heart of a massive security infrastructure program meant to keep refugees and migrants from crossing the English Channel into the United Kingdom. Over the past 20 years, French and British authorities have spent hundreds of millions of pounds on walls, fences, cameras, more police, and security agents to keep people away from the shores. In order to do so, private firms have benefited from multi-year contracts to build, maintain or operate in the city and specifically around the port and railway tunnel areas. Rights organizations and other NGOs say that the infrastructure only forces migrants and refugees to seek out more perilous routes to the UK. Journalists Margaux Benn and Judith Chetrit report from the ground and shed light on this corner of Fortress Europe.

Declarations: The Human Rights Podcast

In this week's episode, host Maryam Tanwir and panellist Yasmin Homer discuss the role of technology in the securitization of European borders with MEP Patrick Breyer and researcher Ainhoa Ruiz. It was 71 years ago that the 1951 UN Refugee Convention codified the rights of refugees to seek sanctuary and the obligation of states to protect them. In 2015 Angela Merkel famously declared, “Wir schaffen das,” that we can do it. Yet, in 2021, the International Organisation for Migration has described 2021 as the deadliest year for migration routes to and within Europe since 2018. At least 1315 people died on the central Mediterranean crossing, while at least 41 lives were lost at the land border between Turkey and Greece. The creation of a “Fortress Europe” emerges as an issue beyond borders, getting to the heart of what it means to be a citizen in a globalised, technologized world. It combines political, social, and economic interests, with the inclusion of private interests and the development of border technology for “corporate interest.” The question of accountability is at the core: if state policy includes, and can depend, upon the lobbying of private security companies, who are they beholden too? If this technology is produced for commercial interest, can its application be done fairly, without bias, or without profit? Securitisation constructs a constant psychological reality of war, impinging on the rights of those trying to get in the fortress, and those already inside. The only difference between the two is luck of circumstance.

In a stunning move, the armies of Nazi Germany annihilated the French military and captured Paris, the crown jewel of Europe, in a matter of a few weeks. As Adolf Hitler tightened his grip on the City of Lights, the shocked Allies regrouped and began planning for a daring counterattack into Fortress Europe. The longer the Nazis held the city, the greater danger its citizens faced. By 1944, over 120,000 Parisians died, and countless more tortured in the city's Gestapo prisons and sent to death camps. The exiled general Charles de Gaulle, headquartered in the bar of London's Connaught Hotel, convinced General Dwight Eisenhower to put Paris before Berlin. Unless Paris was taken immediately, he told him, the City of Light would be leveled. The race for Paris begins.Today's guest is Martin Dugar, author of “Taking Paris: The Epic Battle for the City of Lights.” We discuss the story of the people who set that city free and the account of the battle for the heart and soul of Paris in one of the twentieth century's darkest moments.

The European Union is at loggerheads with Belarus over the arrival of thousands of migrants. It alleges that President Lukashenko has created a deliberate crisis by facilitating the migrants' travel into Belarus and onwards to the country's borders with EU members Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Belarus says the EU is breaching its humanitarian obligations by blocking the entry of those seeking asylum. The question of what to do with migrants is one of the most divisive issues within the EU. Its southern and eastern member countries - where the bulk of migrants arrive - are calling for a more equitable distribution of refugees among member states. They also want more money to support for processing of new arrivals. Meanwhile in western and northern European states, the rise of far-right groups is being seen as a warning to politicians not to be too accommodating to newcomers. So how does the EU fulfil its international obligations around migration while keeping a lid on populist opposition to it? Ritula Shah is joined by a panel of experts. This is a conversation with Syrian-British human rights activist Ghias Al Jundi about the recent fires at the Moria camp for refugees and migrants in Greece. The fires that burned through the camp left thousands houseless, turning a situation that was already described as a living hell into something even worse. Please check the links below for readings on that. Ghias has been going frequently to Greece to help refugees who make the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea, a reality that is the result of the European Union's decision to demonise migration and asylum. The EU has made it impossible for refugees to reach Fortress Europe via the land. [For more on that you can listen to episode 35 (July 6, 2020) on the deadly 'Balkan Route', with Jack Sapoch, coordinator of No Name Kitchen‘s border violence reporting, itself part of the Border Violence Monitoring Network (BVMN).] He also knows very well what it means to leave one's home as he himself fled Syria in 1998 after surviving torture in Hafez Assad's dungeons. This direct connection is something that I think is reflected in our own conversation. As he told me in the episode, seeing migrants and refugees try and reach Europe's shores felt like Syria was coming to him this time.
