In this episode, five cases of homophobic rage, mental illness, alcohol abuse, and murder. Dream City Fire: One of the worst fires in modern London that you've probably never heard of. A combination of alcohol and anger sparked a series of events that ended in the death of 11 men in an unlicensed and uninspected second and third-floor cinema. Ashia Davis: On June 01, 2023, Carlos Scotland and Ashia Davis met at the Woodward Inn in Highland Park, Michigan. By the end of the evening, Ashia Davis would be dead, and the search for her killer would lead to a young killer whose motives remain unclear. Jake Kelly: On August 27, 2023, 49-year-old Jake Kelly was brutally beaten in his Phoenix, Arizona home. Instead of calling for medical assistance, his roommates, Shannon Higgins (37) and Corey Young (44), moved him into a bathtub, delaying any hope of help. This tragic case raises questions about justice, accountability, and the events leading to Jake's untimely death. Gerald Declan Radford: An update to the 2024 Florida case of the murder of John Walter Lay. After a six-day trial and a quick verdict 66, Gerald Declan Radford, under the banner of the stand-your-ground law, left John Walter Lay's family in pieces. Kevin Baker: On March 8, 1977, having left his New Jersey home looking for adventure, 18-year-old Kevin Baker would find himself in a Las Cruces, New Mexico courtroom accused of murdering 47 Charles Thompson, a South Dakota truck driver on his way to a new life. Baker's trial would be filled with questions of sanity and, of course, homosexual panic.
Yep, we are still in summer reruns — but to return with new episodes in September! This one is out second look at the Showtime sitcom Brothers, which I feel too few listeners know about. Let this episode be your primer, however! And your jumping off point to watching the entire series on YouTube! “It Only Hurts When I'm Gay” (October 25, 1985) On paper, the idea of a sitcom taking on the subject of gay bashing seems like the worst idea, but somehow Brothers — TV's first gay sitcom — manages to tell a real story about violence against gay people while avoiding the hokey “very special episode” tropes. We're as shocked as anyone how good this turned out, and what's more, it's genuinely funny without underselling the gravity of the attack. You can now watch Glen's movie, Being Frank, on Freevee via Amazon Prime. WATCH IT NOW! Please, watch this episode (and other Brothers episodes!) on YouTube. The posting we used to do this episode only had 36 views as of the time this GEE first went live!
A stripper, an IRS agent, and a preacher walk into a bar. This isn't a joke. It's our next guest! Meet Reverend Mark Sandlin, an ordained Presbyterian minister and co-founder of ProgressiveChristianity.org. In a captivating dialogue, Mark delves into his acclaimed article, "Clobbering 'Biblical' Gay Bashing," shedding light on the surprisingly recent origins of biblical homophobia, while passionately condemning the intolerance preached in the name of God. Mark challenges the harmful 'love the sinner, hate the sin' mentality, offering a nuanced perspective on faith and acceptance. But that's not all. Mark opens up about his unconventional approach to ministry, which involves fellowshipping with unconventional folks (strippers and IRS agents) in unconventional places (dive bars and back alleys). Through his unique experiences, Mark shares his reflections on the human condition and the transformative power of compassion, inviting listeners to reconsider entrenched beliefs and embrace a more inclusive understanding of faith and love. This is the last of the thirty cases Australian investigators reopened to explore whether or not the victims were the victims of gay hate crimes. You can find the other cases here or on the Panic YouTube channels. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK4r13FF8ExLGbhfSH6i4hw I have listed the cases that have the least amount of evidence pointing to a hate crime. Out of respect for the victims, I am posting their names here. This is among eight of the original 30 unsolved cases that former police gay liaison coordinator Sue Thompson and criminologist Stephen Tomsen have set aside as less compelling. He was 27, a US citizen studying for his PhD in Australia, living with his partner. His body was found at the foot of cliffs at Manly's North Head Beach, outside Sydney. Police were quick to dismiss his death as a suicide. However, Scott's friends and family never believed it. Now, 34 years later, in May 2022, an arrest is made and his family begins to understand what happened. Yet, questions remain about what some say are over 100 other deaths nearby. For decades murders of gay men were happening on the cliffs of Bondi Beaches. Between 1970 and 2010 gay men were hunted, brutally attacked, and in some cases thrown to their deaths from the cliffs of cruising spots above the beautiful beaches of Sydney, Australia. Many of these murders remain unsolved. John Russell was a barmen in Bondi he'd spent the night with his friends then capped the evening off with a visit to the gay cruising spots above the beaches of Bondi, Australia his body was found the next morning. Ross Warren was an up and coming newsreader who never showed up for his on air job. His body has never been found. Scott Johnson was a brilliant mathematician who was approaching the end of Ph.D. studies when his naked body was found on craggy rocks of Manly beach. Decades of terror and violence in Sydney, Australia treated like sport and a right of passage. Thanks for joining me for Bashed.

It's all things gay and Christian in this episode, with a specific look at the history of the ex-gay movement and reparative therapy. What do Tim and Ray think about Biblical infallibility and the “clobber verses”? What about the concept of deliverance? Is gay identity a choice or are we born this way? Is ex-gay identity a fallacy? Is the “decision” to change one's sexual orientation really just the result of coercion? Tim and Ray review a pair of documentaries on the subject, including the new-ish Netflix film Pray Away, and take to task the narratives of former ex-gay church leaders who have now embraced their queer identities. There are a few focus points along the way: Dave Chappelle, the relationship between anti-science and anti-LGBT rhetoric in the church, Donnie McClurkin, exvangelicalism, and the problem with leadership models and the power structures in affirming LGBT faith spaces that mirror their conservative counterparts. Homophobia in the Caribbean is still a very real thing despite the many advances we have experienced in the United States in recent years. Yet as recent as two weeks ago, at the Sonesta Beach Ocean Point resort in St. Maarten, Mike and his partner Eric experienced discrimination and homophobia, the result of interacting with other gay guests staying on the property while poolside. Accused of sneaking in others using non-existent video footage as proof, Mike and Eric had to defend themselves in the lobby of the Sonesta Resort to the dismay of others, while facing an additional $800+ in charges. Sadly, this isn't the first time Mike and Eric have experienced homophobic discrimination in the Caribbean, and during this episode, gay travelers are encouraged to research their Caribbean destinations prior to booking. Mike discusses this ongoing concern with 20 cruises under his belt as avid oceanic traveler. With important information for anyone that identifies as members of the LGBTQ+ community, this episode is a must listen if you're planning a vacation to this beautiful, but potentially dangerous part of the globe.

Well Well…It has been quite a week at Chez Podcast. Jordan has officially lost a fifth of the hair on his head and he is uncharacteristically unfazed. First I will share the story, as my big sister used to tell the stories of the Bible to me, with colorful ghetto finesse. Then, we will break it down and make it relevant to popular topics of today. Today, women’s basketball great Chamique Holdsclaw joins us to discuss the recent comments of Gilbert Arenas, and her own fascinating history in the game. For years, the #1 WNBA draft pick waged a silent battle for mental wellness, but she eventually chose to go public, becoming a powerful advocate and role model. Her journey is chronicled in the film ‘Mind Game.’ Then, we visit with Sporting News columnist David Steele, who found himself in the crosshairs of Trump-Nation and Patriot-Nation after criticizing Tom Brady for evading a political stance while displaying a “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” hat in his locker. Finally, the ‘Just Stand Up Award’ goes to NBA referee Bill Kennedy, who came out as a gay man as a show of pride and defiance in the face of Rajon Rondo’s on-court slurs. Thanks for listening.
