In this episode, we explore one woman's struggle to protect her culture and her family amidst the backdrop of a military occupation. Our book is: Call Her Freedom (Simon and Schuster, 2025), by Tara Dorabji, which is set in the foothills of the Himalayas, where the picturesque mountain village of Poshkarbal is home to lush cherry and apple orchards and a thriving community—one divided by a patrolled border. Aisha and her mother Noorjahan live on the outskirts—two women alone in a world dominated by men. As the village midwife, Noorjahan teaches Aisha how to heal using local herbs and remedies. Isolated but content, Aisha is shocked when Noorjahan decides it is time for her to attend the village school as few girls do. Despite the taunting of her classmates and the teacher's initial resistance to having her in the class, Aisha becomes a star student, destined for college. When Aisha becomes engaged to a local boy, she is forced to abandon her dreams of college. She comforts herself by staying on her ancestral land, creating a nourishing life with her children and husband. But her mother's secrets haunt her, and the growing military presence in Poshkarbal forces Aisha to make impossible choices. Call Her Freedom is also an investigation of colonialism, militarization, sacrifice, honor, and fighting for your home. Our guest is: Tara Dorabji, who is the author of Call Her Freedom, winner of the Simon & Schuster Books Like Us contest. She is the daughter of Parsi-Indian and German-Italian migrants. Her documentary film series on human rights defenders in Kashmir won awards at over a dozen film festivals throughout Asia and the USA. Tara's publications include Al Jazeera, The Chicago Quarterly, Huizache, and acclaimed anthologies: Good Girls Marry Doctors and All the Women in My Family Sing. She lives in Northern California with her family and rabbit. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, who is the creator, producer and show host of the Academic Life podcast. German-Italian post-punk duo Circolo Vizioso released their debut album Verruckt, created mainly with electric violin, guitar and drums. Hailing from Berlin, Circolo Vizioso was founded by Tony Scafidi (guitar, bass, drum, hi-hat, vocals) and Paul Geigerzaehler (violin, snare drum, vocals). Formed in March 2020 on a balcony in Friedrichshain, Berlin during the first Covid-19 lock-down, Circolo Vizioso was born as an attempt to keep art and music alive and to provide support to their neighbors during a time when no concerts were happening and no cinemas, museums or galleries were open. Circolo Vizioso is these artists' attempt to resist the isolation and the lack of social and human contact, as well as the hunger for music and art during this unusual time. Counterfeiting remains a serious problem, to say the least. According to a recent report of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, global trade in counterfeit goods could pass US 2 trillion annually, making it one of the 10 largest “economies” and one of the biggest sources of job losses globally. All sectors are concerned, most brands experience harm from counterfeiting, not only inflicting massive negative economic harm, but also posing a danger to consumers' health and safety and on the environment… And the trend is not slowing down and is in recent years further exacerbated by increased online counterfeiting. Combating counterfeit is one of the most challenging concerns of our times. This is the mission of Countercheck, a German/Italian company, whose objective is to “revolutionize the counterfeit landscape” by closing the route to market for counterfeiters. Earlier this year, they won the award in the Scale-up category of INTA's first-ever Open Innovation Challenge, prevailing among 31 entrants. Countercheck has developed an anticounterfeiting technology (patent pending software) that allows parcel and postal firms to intercept and block small parcels containing counterfeit goods—before they are delivered to the end consumers—and take out of circulation. With access to worldwide cross-belt sorters equipped with parcel detection technology to identify and sideload suspicious parcels, brand owners and couriers can join forces in this fight and scale the removal of counterfeit goods from the marketplace. Our guest for this episode of Brand & New is Phil Hamilton, Countercheck co-founder and CEO since 2021. Experienced in bringing new business solutions to a diverse set of industries and markets, he worked internationally for more than 15 years in business growth roles. I have been married for almost twenty years to a wonderful, kind-hearted man of German/Italian descent and we have three teenage kids: two daughters and a son. A few of my favorite pastimes are gardening, photography, traveling, flower arranging, taking walks in nature, reading, learning foreign languages, and just spending time with my family. I have also always loved cooking and for a few years was an avid baker and cake decorator too. Being a true foodie at heart and preparing and indulging in decadent meals and desserts all the time, weight management was always an issue for me. Considering I am only five feet tall, I don't have the luxury of carrying a lot of weight without it "showing" easily. To put it shortly, trying to become fit was a major struggle. I also told myself I loved food too much to be able to lose any weight and keep it off long term. Additionally, being pregnant three times within five years and not fully getting rid of the "baby weight" three times in a row compounded my weight problem. Eventually, I managed to reach obesity by the age of 43. I had given up trying, I didn't even own a scale anymore and had no clue what I weighed. I knew, however, that my clothing size had been steadily climbing up: from 6 to 8, to 10, to 12, reaching 14 in the summer of 2019. Then, that Christmas I ended up having to visit an orthopedist for a frozen shoulder and needed to be weighed in the doctor's office. I was shocked to find out I had reached 172lbs! I was heavier than my six-foot husband who weighed 168lbs at the time. At that moment, I knew I had to do something, soon. I happened to mention my health concerns with a family member over the Christmas holidays and he shared that he had done intermittent fasting that same year. He had successfully lost 35lbs doing IF and suggested I try it out too. I was intrigued. I had free time because I was on winter break from school, so I spent a few days watching YouTube videos on intermittent fasting, researching as much as I could, and decided to give it a try and see how it goes for me. So on January 1st, 2020 I began following a 16:8 IF protocol, eating two meals and a snack between 11AM and 6PM. The rest of the time, I drank different kinds of herbal and fruit teas and water. I April, I read "Delay, Don't Deny" by Gin Stephens and learned about the clean fast, as well as different IF protocols. I switched to strictly black or green tea, which are clean fast approved, and transitioned to a one meal a day lifestyle. I also began to really appreciate food as fuel for my body and started turning my OMAD into a special occasion that is rich in nutrients and a delight for all the senses. By October of that year I had lost 55lbs and have been maintaining that weight loss for over 15 months now. IF has truly been life changing for me! Claudia Ganswind has made it her mission to raise awareness about the benefits of a plant-based diet. Never one to really enjoy eating meat, Claudia is a German-Italian raw food chef who became vegan in the year 2000. Starting out as a raw food chef, Claudia found she enjoyed various types of plant-based eating. As a child, Claudia’s father continually tried to convince her that she needed to eat meat and eggs in order to grow and be healthy, but deep inside, she knew this was not who she was. She made the connection between meat on her plate and animal cruelty very early in her life, but it was not until years later she made the lifestyle commitment to become vegan. Although Claudia started as a vegetarian, she fully committed to her vegan journey when her two sisters became vegan and educated her about what veganism was actually about. Similarly, thanks to a vegan chef at a vegetarian festival, she was also informed on how animals are treated and how nature is suffering because of factory farming. Soon after, she became vegan for the love of animals and the earth. Likewise, her sisters showed her how to create delicious (raw) vegan dishes as well as teaching herself to create wonderful dishes. Her passions include creating raw vegan dishes, eating healthy and creating a sense of wellbeing. Her passion for raw food vegan motivated Claudia to write Raw Vegan Wellness Kitchen. (Available on Amazon https://amzn.to/3rh5B5V) Currently, Claudia does what she can to promote a healthy vegan diet. In Germany, there is a lot of support for veganism. Claudia has lived in many countries such as Taiwan, Canada, France and Spain. Along the way, she has worked in vegan restaurants such as Loving Hut and Gorilla Foods. https://www.instagram.com/vegan.wellbeing/ https://www.facebook.com/VeganWellbeing.RawVeganChef https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCunfyvmpV31E2XBIi3ZfGzQ (Vegan Wellbeing - Raw Vegan Chef)

In this episode we’re proud to present Illegal Helpers, a documentary play written by German-Italian playwright Maxi Obexer, translated into English by Neil Blackadder, and arranged for audio presentation by Play for Voices. Illegal Helpers was recorded before a live audience at the Czech Center New York in Manhattan, as part of an event called Freedom and Movement that was held in November 2018 to commemorate the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. Illegal Helpers, which premiered in Salzburg in 2016 and was named one of the 2016 winners of the German-language Eurodram Prize, explores the current refugee crisis in Europe through the eyes of ordinary citizens. The play is based on verbatim interviews the playwright conducted with Swiss, Austrian, and German residents from all walks of life—doctors, judges, social workers, activists, and students—who took it upon themselves to help refugees. Some of these helpers broke the law multiple times and were charged with providing aid to illegal immigrants, and others could still be subject to legal action at any time. The Play for Voices production of Illegal Helpers was directed by Katrin Redfern and performed by JJ Condon, Roberto De Felice, Guenevere Donohue, Mariam Habib, Asta Hansen, Wayne Maugans, Joe Primavera, Francisco Solorzano, Harold Tarr, and Pauline Walsh.
