When it comes to marketing, it's crucial that your message matches the expectations of your audience. If they're expecting a one-sided sales pitch, and you give them information instead, you'll likely lose their attention. On the other hand, if you give them the information they need without pushing them to buy anything, you may win their business in the long run. So how can you ensure that your message is matched with your audience's expectations? One way is to study your audience and learn what they want. You can also use marketing research to find out what people are looking for online. Once you have a good idea of what your audience wants, you can craft your marketing messages to meet those desires. That's just one aspect of the principle known as "message market match." And the starting point for our conversation with Alyson Lex in today's episode. Alyson Lex has been writing high-converting direct response sales copy since 2007. From her start as the Director of Marketing at Glazer-Kennedy Insider's Circle (working and writing for Dan Kennedy and Bill Glazer) to her private business helping hundreds of coaches, authors and speakers, to her podcast helping you market your business AND put good into the world - she lives and breathes effective marketing that works withOUT selling your soul. Mara Glazer, aka the world's best female direct response copywriter, joins the RADD Podcast this week with host Ductch Mendenhall. Mara and Dutch met while working in the info-marketing industry and have remained friends ever since. These two entrepreneurs share their wisdom and knowledge, years of business experience right here on the RADD Podcast. Mara Glazer's high school English writing teacher told her she didn't have the skills she needed to be successful. (True story.) So then how did she go on to be named “The World's Best Female Direct Response Copywriter” by quite a few very successful marketing experts? Her father, Bill Glazer, known to many as a direct response copywriting legend, and founder of Glazer Kennedy Insider's Circle with Dan Kennedy (GKIC), personally taught her how to write direct response sales copy for 3 years. But, he made her earn it first. She had to work for him for 6 months—for free—before he officially gave her a job. Then she had to figure out how to make money with social media… or she was told she would be out. (AKA – fired!) Well, she did… generating over a million dollars tracked back to social media in under 278 days—before Facebook ads were even a thing. After that is when he started to mentor her in writing direct response sales copy. Her father built Glazer Kennedy Insider's Circle into the largest education company of marketing and moneymaking information for small business owners around the globe, and then sold to a venture capital firm in 2011. That's when Mara went out on her own. Now Mara and her team of direct response copywriters “secretly” write for many of the most successful and top-earning entrepreneurs, marketers, influencers, and products around right now. She's the woman people come to when they want copy and presentations that convert. Event planning can be a daunting task and knowing how to pull off a successful event can be even more difficult. What does someone need to start their own event to showcase their product or service and how do you start an event planning service?  Essential questions are who are you going to target? What is going to be your startup cost? Who is going to run the operations and financials for the event? Lastly, you will need to know the marketing and resources available to get your event promoted.  For many people, event planning is often left to the professionals. It takes a lot of work and can be overwhelming at times. An inexperienced planner will have all kinds of questions about the type of event, what kind of people are we targeting, and what are we going to talk about. Speakers, educators, promoters, sponsors, oh my! This can be exhausting just listing them; however, it isn't an impossible task for you. With the right planning and research, you can pull this off yourself and showcase your successful product or service.  Target The Right Market Why is targeting so important? The target is important because it allows you to hone in on what might be the most prolific. You wouldn't invite techies to an event with no tech equipment. Decide whether or not it's going to be a corporate or social event. Knowing the type of event will keep people who might be interested in your product or service engaged and interested. Know Your Startup Cost Knowing your startup cost is important because it gives you some insight into how successful your event was and prepares you for some unexpected situations. Some things to consider are the venue rent, the equipment you will need, inventory of your product, licenses or taxes, communication, advertising and promotion, attorneys, and insurance.  Operations Research is the best way to mitigate risk. It is important to do your homework. Consider the time you have to plan and know that the bigger the event, the more time you will need to plan. About SherrieAs a strategic event planner with 15-years of experience, I help clients realize their potential for success and create live events to grow their brand while bringing profit to their business that continues long after the event. Todays guest joining us on the Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a lady who is a complete rockstar. Not in the get up on stage and grind it like Tina Turner type of rockstar or perhaps she does that in her spare-time. But the kind of rockstar that can make your marketing, jump out of the page, like Mick Jagger on speed. As she says “I can take you from “I don't know” or “This doesn't work” or even “I'm not having any FUN with this!” to “My Marketing ROCKS!” Which is of course a very confident statement to make, and one that works on every level. So who is she? She is the former Marketing Manager for Glazer-Kennedy Insider's Circle – whose first sales-letter generated nearly $9,000.00 in less than 3 days to a list barely over 200 people. My copy and marketing strategy contributed to a campaign that generated over $1 MILLION at an international event attended by more than 1,000 people. As she says “When I began working for Dan Kennedy and Bill Glazer in 2007, a whole new world was opened up to me in terms of marketing. I'd always paid attention to advertising, and I always had a strange addiction to infomercials, but I never could have imagined that my life would begin revolving around all things marketing, all the time. I studied Psychology, English and Creative Writing in college – never once suspecting that perhaps I was setting myself up for a career in marketing. I always just loved the English language and the way words could be used to accomplish so many things… and in my Psychology classes, I was learning what made people tick. Now I have the great pleasure of taking the things that I love and doing them for money! I get to figure out new ways to make people buy things and it's quite rewarding to know that my words helped someone increase their bottom line and benefit their bank accounts. I really do have the best job in the world.” So what is the difference between creative writing, and great marketing copy? And does she see that this was something she learnt, or was always in here in some degree? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Alyson Lex.

Soon after, I ventured out on my own and launched Mara Glazer Cut The Crap Business Coaching (the website you are on right now) and my newest venture, Best Damn Biz Team (formerly known as Mara Glazer Media Works), which you can find out more about at www.BestDamnBizTeam.com. About Today's Guest Mara Glazer The Sales Podcast 68 ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/thesaleswhisperer/14300161855 ) Mara Glazer was a miserable slave to a corporate job in NYC making $35,000 a year working for a not-so-nice female person. (Edited here to keep our PG rating!) At the age of 23 she convinced her dad, Bill Glazer, to allow her to work for him at the company he founded, Glazer-Kennedy Insider's Circle (a company he built into the world's largest provider of marketing and money-making information to small business owners around the globe). He gave her one job: figure out how to make money with social media, OR she was out! (At the time, she didn't even know what social media was.) So Mara spent the next months inhaling all of the information she could get her hands on about making money using social media...implementing that information...testing that information...and tracking that information... The Result? An additional 7 figures in less than 278 days using social and alternative media! Soon after, she ventured out on my own and launched Mara Glazer Cut The Crap Business Coaching and her newest venture, Best Damn Biz Team (formerly known as Mara Glazer Media Works), which you can find out more about at www.BestDamnBizTeam.com ( http://www.bestdamnbizteam.com/ ). Rubber-Meets-The-Road Tip * Nobody has a plan. * Social media is not free. Especially these days. You now need to advertise on FB, Twitter, LinkedIn and even Pinterest. * Pay to play. If you're not willing to pay to play. Social media can be worth it so look into it and create a plan. * Work your plan. It's more than 5 minutes a day. Set time to implement. * If you hire a social media manager... * They must create strategy for your social media marketing efforts. * Must be good at speaking in your own voice and that's not easy. * Trust them once you find them. If you have to approve everything it will hold you and the team back. * Have at least a monthly meeting if not more. * Give them access to your marketing calendar. (Most don't have a marketing calendar.) * They must login daily and interact and be present in your social media. * Look for people that are good at FB advertising. It's different than Google AdWords. * Popups still work. She uses PopUp Domination ( http://01ab5rsqzqzn1vfauktm0s4p6d.hop.clickbank.net/ ). * Get a marketing coach to help you create a marketing plan. Start with a 3-month plan. Without a plan you are probably broke. * You'll make a lot of pivots and shifts so by month four things will change so look to recreate these every 4 months. * If you don't have baseline revenue and recurring revenue that covers your bills every month, figure that out first. Then focus on list-building both actively and passively. Passive list-building is critical. Lead magnets like free reports. Use PPC to drive visitors and leads. * You can also sponsor events / tele summits, etc. to generate leads. It's active but it works. * Mara prefers email newsletters. She knows they work. Printed newsletters work as well. They worked with GKIC, with her clients, etc. * But email newsletters keep you top-of-mind. She does a weekly but she bi-weekly is fine but monthly is not frequent enough. * It's good at building a relationship. * It's good for promotions and let people know you have an event coming up. * Paid advertising. She is good at Facebook advertising. Start NOW! It's still cheap on Facebook but that is changing. * Use social media to put people into your funnel. Building your brand is important, but building your list is key. * Create an automated funnel. * She loves Infusionsoft ( https://crm.isrefer.com/go/viewdemoicc/wschaeffer/ ). * Add as many media touch points as possible. * Besides email she loves live human calls. This was hard to learn for her. She had to learn how to have sales conversations. Her first 50 sales conversations were a mess. She didn't close any of them. (Insert Sales training flash cards and 30 Day Sales Growth.) *You have to learn how to sell* ( http://30daysalesgrowth.com ). * “If you can't sell you're in trouble.” Learning to sell makes you a better marketer. It helps you learn who you're talking to. * Hire somebody to write for you if you need help creating your email newsletter. * If your budget is tight, do it yourself. Get over your own fear. * You'll end up connecting, making somebody smile, you'll give a tip that transforms someone's life and you'll grow. * Getting PR. Mara can help you with an article writer that creates a 400-800 word article that gets syndicated on ABC, Fox, etc. “Dirt Cheap $297." support@maraglazer.com. * Mara was overweight and “dorky” as a kid. Even her teachers told her she'd never be successful from 6th to 10th grade. All of those feelings came out when she launched her business. She hired a mentor ( http://thesaleswhisperer.com/private-monthly-consulting/ ) to help her get over those issues. * Ready Fire Aim. Focused on selling. * The first thing she sold was VIP consulting days for $10,000. (“That's how much I wanted to make so that's what I charged.”) * Those high-dollar clients are a greater pleasure. * She steers implementation clients to her VA business. * She wanted and needed to make money. It gives you the freedom and opportunity to do a lot of things. * She didn't have a website and made her first $200,000. * Get a list and make offers. * Most of her $10,000 clients had never heard of her or GKIC. She just launched and asked for the sale. She started with her own savings. * Her email list is not big according to industry standards but she knows how to sell. * She had never owned a business before. “If a 28-year old blonde chick...” * She took some time off after GKIC but she started building an email list. She had a $500/mo for 6 months coaching program called Jump Start. (no longer offered) * Now using Google Hangouts and live events. * BizConLive ( http://maraglazer.com/events/ ).
