Gloucester County has a rich history tied to our many waterways. To fish, oyster, crab and boat has long been part of our culture. However, zoning laws along many of our shorelines don't support these historic uses - and that oversight has sometimes led to tension between our water-based businesses and our residents. How can we preserve and protect our beautiful shorelines, while also encouraging their economic potential? We've brought on board a grant-funded researcher to get community input on this issue, and make recommendations for potential future laws. This is the moment to weigh in on how you view, and interact with, Gloucester's waterfront!TAKE THE SURVEY: https://s.surveyplanet.com/q0pshh3sCall Planning, Zoning & Environmental Programs: 804-693-1224

Gloucester County native and Boston College edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku is another prospect the Eagles have brought in for a workout. Could he possibly be there for the Eagles and fill a void at edge after they lost Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat this offseason (55:58)? Title: Languaging in Hampton Roads Episode 13: Guinea Talk: Gloucester County's Unique Dialect Hosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue Salasky Date: Feb 2, 2025 Length: 39:44 Publication Frequency: Fourth Friday (approx) of each month Take a ride with us--to Guinea Neck! Nestled in the marshland of Gloucester County, Virginia, is Guinea Neck, where the local community has made their living off the water for centuries. Traditionally, the lifestyle of Guinea has been comprised of long hours on the water and a tight knit community, the ideal situation for the development of a unique language variation. Although receding, the Guinea dialect is well known in the Gloucester area. We tapped into oral histories to try to understand the unique features of their dialect. In this episode, we introduce you to four Guinea watermen, born and raised in the early to mid-twentieth century. We take account of their stories of living and working on the water, while walking through the stages of their lives and experiences. Along the way we talk with linguist, Dr. Bridget Anderson at Old Dominion University. Dr. Anderson is the founder of the Tidewater Voices oral history project (see info below). Dr. Anderson talks with us about how to listen for differences in the vowels and other features of the Tidewater and Guinea variations and emphasizes the importance of deeper, broader study to understand the distinct variations. We also talk with Carlene Klein who, with two other students of Dr. Anderson, through a yearlong ethnographic process, interviewed a number of the Guinea watermen. The Guinea watermen featured in this episode share stories of growing up in the remote marshes of Guines, of living with their close family connections, of learning the ropes and starting work on the water at young ages, and of the joy of being on the water. Tidewater Voices is housed at ODU Digital Commons and is available to the public for research. There are 22 Guinea oral histories in the collection. You can find them here: https://digitalcommons.odu.edu/tidewatervoices_gloucester/ Look for the Guinea subheading. Taylar does a take over to cover the Colonial Parkway Murders that terrorized this area of Virginia for the last half of the 80s and beyond. 9 confirmed victims: Cathy, Becky, David, Robin, Keith, Cassandra, Annamaria, Daniel, and Terri. Spanning from 1986-1989 and an additional 5+ potential attacks. In 2022 a break in the case would lead to major developments that were released in January of this year (2024). In which, Alan W. Wilmer Sr. was confirmed to be behind two of the incidents. The FBI is still looking for information regarding Wilmers whereabouts and other information that would help connect him to other crimes that do not have DNA. So they are asking for help from the public. Here is the statement they left in a January 10, 2024 CNN article written by Steve Almasy and Sara Smart: “In the 1980s, Wilmer was a fisherman who often docked his commercial fishing boat in Gloucester County and Middlesex County, state police said in a news release. He also ran a tree service and hunted frequently. He was 5 feet, 5 inches tall, muscular and weighed approximately 165 pounds, according to state police, who have asked anyone who may have had contact with Wilmer to come forward. Wilmer drove a distinctive, blue 1966 Dodge Fargo pickup with the Virginia license plate “EM-RAW” and writing on the truck's passenger door. “Anyone who may have worked with Alan W. Wilmer Sr. or hunted with him, farmed oysters and clams with him, docked next to him at marinas in the Northern Neck, Hampton Roads or Middle Peninsula areas, or hung out with him is encouraged to contact the FBI by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or submitting a tip online at www.tips.fbi.gov,” TTYL BESTIES!! I woke up on Wednesday morning to a text from one of my very best friends, Stephen Bogan, of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. “OMGGGG…LOOK…,” the message read. There was the link to an article about a recent archaeological discovery of Hessian soldiers' remains at the Battle of Red Bank, in New Jerset. This article is amazing. Please, please, please respond to the poll question at the end of the podcast. Message me at: njhistorypodcast@gmail.com Instagram: njhistorypodcast YouTube: The New Jersey History Podcast Channel Facebook: I'm so over that, and it lasted barely two months , because it's ridiculous and people can turn a “hello” into an argument.
