August 22, 2024 Today's Reading: Catechism: Daily Prayers: Morning PrayerDaily Lectionary: 1 Kings 2:1-27; 1 Corinthians 14:1-16:24; 1 Corinthians 13:1-13For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. (Morning Prayer) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. This little sentence delivers so much comfort. ‘Into God's Hands.' The very hands that bore nails during His unfair, yet very good, crucifixion. The very hands that are marred with scars from His sacrifice. Those are the hands about which this prayer is speaking. ‘Commending myself.' To be honest, there is nothing commendable about me (and all sinners). In fact, on our own, we are dead. We sinners are not great caretakers. Our every decision is marred with sin. We are inherently selfish and short-sighted. So, commending myself - presenting myself before God - sounds a bit terrifying. But this prayer has already reminded us that the hands into which we are presenting ourselves are Jesus' hands. They are hands that showed their love in this way: bearing our sins and defeating our enemies. So, commending ourselves before God does not have to be terrifying but is relieving. We are Baptized. We are covered by Jesus and get to remember that every time we pray. ‘My body and soul, and all things.' A lie that sinners tell ourselves is that our bodies are our property to do with as we choose. We think we stand independent and want to be segregated from our neighbors. Lord have mercy. In this prayer, we are reminded that our bodies, our souls, and all things are tied together. And, they are commended - presented - to God. Into Jesus' nail-scarred hands, all things are presented, are declared good through Baptism, and are redeemed. There is comfort and assurance in this little sentence in a simple morning prayer. As you pray, using this prayer, the one that our Lord taught, or your own simple words, slow down and think about the amazingness of Who you are talking to and how He loves and cares for you. Prayer doesn't seem to make sense:  the perfect God of all things would desire to hear from us? And yet, that is exactly what we have. We get to bring all of our cares and concerns - even our whole selves - to Him and be cared for in His loving and merciful Hands. As you pray and after you pray, be confident and sure that your Savior has heard you, loves you, and will continually show you mercy. In the Name + of Jesus. Our last study in the book of Colossians begins in chapter 4 verse 7. Dr. Mitchell will be covering the last 12 verses of this chapter giving comments concerning 9 men working along side the apostle Paul in prison in Rome. Two of the men with Paul were members of this Colossian church. Onesimus was a slave of a friend of Paul's, who name was Philemon, and the other, Epaphras, a prayer warrior for this church. Dr. Mitchell notes that the apostle Paul had something good to say about all these men, except for one. He explains why. Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of the previous U.S. President Donald Trump, has cleared the air regarding his future career moves. If Trump secures a victory in the upcoming November elections, Kushner is not planning to return to the corridors of political power. Rather, he intends to concentrate his energies on his investment firm, Affinity Partners. His focus on entrepreneurial ventures is a departure from his past involvement in the political arena. On a recent Tuesday, Kushner communicated his intentions. Although he wishes Trump success in his pursuits, he noted that he personally will not be a part of the next potential term in the White House. Kushner's decision to commit himself to his business enterprise is in line with his recent pursuits since leaving presidential role. Speaking to Axios' Business Editor Dan Primack, Kushner recounted his experiences, 'I had the privilege of contributing to our campaign and even transitioning into the administration. These roles allowed us to achieve some remarkable things that I'm extremely proud of. However, I have faith that he will be able to assemble a highly capable team with the available individuals this time around'. While Kushner's stint in the White House was certainly memorable for him, he has recently found comfort in a life away from public scrutiny. Kushner and his family have chosen to reside in Florida, a decision that has allowed them to step away from the limelight and enjoy a quieter, more private lifestyle. Despite his choice to stay away from political activities, Kushner didn't shy away from lauding the efficacy of Trump's campaign team. Kushner asserted that the current team might be the best available to the former president. Commending their outstanding work, Kushner stated, 'This team has proven to be exemplary in their duties. If he's re-elected, I am confident he will enjoy an even greater degree of professionalism and competence than we saw during his previous term'. Kushner's remarks indicate his confidence in Trump's team for the potential upcoming term. In a parallel vein, Ivanka Trump, Kushner's wife, has also chosen to step back from her father's political campaign. Her decision to remain outside the White House was made known earlier. Kushner's and Ivanka's decisions align in maintaining a distance from political involvement and concentrating on personal and family priorities instead. Emphasizing her deep love for her father, Ivanka spoke of her decision by saying, 'I cherish my father deeply. However, during this phase, I have decided to place higher priority on my young children and our private family life. I don't intend to engage in the political field,'. The choice to favor personal life over political pursuits places family values upfront for Ivanka. Ivanka highlighted her intention to support her father outside the confines of politics. By stepping away from political activities, she can dedicate her time to the family's private life, asserting her gratitude towards serving the American people during Trump's executive term. Recognizing her past roles, Ivanka stated, 'Although I will always have a love for and support my father, from here on out, I will do so in a non-political capacity. It was an honor to serve the people of the United States, and I will eternally be proud of our administration's multiple achievements',. Ivanka's acknowledgment of her service showcases her appreciation for the impact she's had during the Trump administration. Consequently, these latest developments reflect the current state of the Trump dynasty, as they continue to shape their life paths and decide their future roles in public life. For Kushner and Ivanka, it is apparent that their focus has shifted to private endeavors and family-centric priorities. Albeit stepping away from politics, their enthusiasm for Trump's potential political success remains. Their decision to retire from the political field demonstrates a clear intent to strike a balance between political legacy and personal life. Overall, with Kushner and Ivanka Trump choosing non-political paths, there is expected to be a refocusing of their energies and resources. The decision does not reflect a lack of faith in Trump's potential return to the White House, but a personal choice to nurture their individual pursuits and family life. These decisions, while personal, carry a weight bearing upon the future roadmap of Trump's political ambitions. As the next era of Trump's political journey gets shaped, the absence of Kushner and Ivanka will surely be felt, but the ones working alongside Trump could seize the opportunity to foster a fresh perspective. Humility is a quality Jesus held which we should try to copy. Paul was an alll-star in his time, but he was slow to toot his own horn. Commending us is God's job, and waiting for that approval is part of our discipline.

This week we conclude our series on 2 Corinthians 2:12-6:10. As we have mentioned before, this passage is the longest autobiographical writing we have of Paul. He concludes this small autobiography by commending himself to the Christians of Corinth. Why? One simple answer is from the context. Paul was under attack from enemies of Christ who had infiltrated the church. His defense was not focused on himself but on Jesus Christ and the gospel. False teachers had their aim on Paul, but their target was the gospel. Paul uses the opportunity to showcase and call the Corinthian Christians, and us as well, to pursue lives of holiness no matter the cost, the hardship, or the apparent defeats. 2000 years ago, Paul commends a woman named Phoebe to a group of people that have not yet met her.  I am doing the same today.  She is a person who has been tested.  It is not her first day.She is described as a patron.  This is a person who uses their position of power, their resources and their knowledge of systems to help people.  What kind of people? People who are not in positions of power; who have more limited resources; and less knowledge of how the system works.  The foreigner, or resident alien is often assumed in the use of the word.  A patron helps the most needful people. The charge today is threefold. First, let's learn about her.
