Kristine Tompkins is the president and co-founder of Tompkins Conservation, an American conservationist, and former CEO of Patagonia, Inc. For three decades, she has committed to protecting and restoring wild beauty and biodiversity by creating national parks, restoring wildlife, inspiring activism, and fostering economic vitality as a result of conservation. Kristine and her late husband Douglas Tompkins have protected over 15 million acres of parklands in Chile and Argentina through Tompkins Conservation and its partners, making them among the most successful national park-oriented philanthropists in history. Through Tompkins Conservation and its offspring organizations, Rewilding Argentina and Rewilding Chile, she has helped to create or expand 15 national parks in Argentina and Chile, including two marine national parks, and works to bring back over two dozen species that have gone locally or nationally extinct, such as the jaguar, red-and-green macaw, and giant river otters in Northeast Argentina, and Darwin’s rheas and extremely endangered huemul deer in Chile. Kristine served as Patron for Protected Areas for the UN Environmental Programme from 2018-2022. The recipient of numerous honors, she was the first conservationist to be awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. In 2024, she followed up her 2020 TED Talk, "Let's Make the World Wild Again," with over two million views, with “A Bold Plan to Rewild the Earth—at a Massive Scale,” available in 14 languages, on the TED mainstage in Vancouver. About Tompkins Conservation Founded by the late Douglas Tompkins and cofounded by Kristine Tompkins, Tompkins Conservation is protecting and restoring wild beauty and biodiversity by creating national parks, bringing back species through rewilding, and fostering regenerative economies. Over three decades, the nonprofit has protected approximately 15 million acres of parklands in Chile and Argentina through the creation or expansion of 15 national parks in Chile and Argentina, in addition to two marine protected areas of 30 million acres. Through active rewilding, the organization is bringing back over a dozen species that are in critical numbers, endangered or locally extinct. In 2015, a kayaking accident in Patagonia took Doug's life. Alongside his wife Kris, the couple are amongst the foremost conservation philanthropists in history.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The first step to saving nature is the rewilding of our own minds, says conservationist and former Patagonia CEO Kristine McDivitt Tompkins. With an unwavering commitment to protecting ecosystems, she and her late husband Douglas Tompkins created vast conservation parks across South America that allowed ancient flora and fauna to flourish once again. Now, she's carrying that legacy and mission forward with a bold plan to connect parks across geographic boundaries, creating a system of continental-scale wildlife corridors — before it's too late.

In one of our most anticipated conversations of the year, we got the chance to sit down with three of Spotify's eng leaders: Krisitan Lindwall, Director of Engineering, Data, Insights, Experimentation, & ML Infrastructure; Mark Grey, Senior Staff Engineer; and Pooja Dave, Director of Engineering, Music Promotion. They share insights from their experience building a culture of experimentation & innovation at a massive scale and what elements are necessary for experimentation at scale. They share the origin story of Spotify's experimentation platform, how to develop eng leaders to think strategically & execute effectively, mistakes to avoid while scaling your experimentation capabilities, and navigating the balance between structured processes vs. unstructured time to ideate.ABOUT KRISTIAN LINDWALLKristian (@klindwall) is an engineering leader at Spotify. He has over 10 years of experience managing and coaching a broad variety of engineering and product teams. He is currently based in New York where he manages the engineering teams working on the company's data, insights, and machine learning platforms. Prior to that, he led parts of the agile coach practice at Spotify for a few years and has been very active in supporting the growth of a strong agile and lean approach in the company. Before Spotify, Kristian spent 8 years in fintech in Stockholm where he built and grew the engineering team at the largest online broker company in Sweden."How we behave in the organization is really what reinforces and drives the culture and I think there's a few things driving that culture of innovation. Connecting hands to heads, meaning give people an opportunity to engage in ideation and make sure people are involved in strategy work and in the full process of figuring out where we're heading.”- Kristian Lindwall ABOUT POOJA DAVEWith over a decade of experience building and leading several R&D organizations in ad tech, marketing tech, and platforms servicing those, Pooja currently runs the organization at Spotify that helps artists engage and grow their fanbase. Prior to Spotify, she worked at Microsoft on several products including Devices, Browser Rendering Engine, and Advertising/MarTech SDKs. This diversity in experiences has given her a well-rounded exposure to engineer solutions and lead teams with strong backend architecture, client, machine learning, and data practices.“For Spotify, failure is the paradox to success.”- Pooja Dave ABOUT MARK GREYMark is a Senior Staff Engineer at Spotify, where for a decade he has worked on a broad range of distributed systems related to experimentation, data processing, and analytics. Having operated and scaled solutions at all stages of growth, his primary focus is on technical strategy and platformization.Prior to Spotify, Mark worked at the New York Times on personalization infrastructure such as near-realtime article recommendations."We want to ideally maximize the throughput on those things that we see pan out or don't pan out. So kind of a fail faster, double down model and there's all kinds of practices and tools that we put in place that Confidence is just one among many that allow us to increase that throughput. So try and derive insights from a small experiment, validate your hypothesis quickly, and then proceed and scale up from there.”- Mark Grey This episode is brought to you by incident.ioincident.io is trusted by hundreds of tech-led companies across the globe, including Etsy, monday.com, Skyscanner and more to seamlessly orchestrate incident response from start to finish. Pilfering, swindling, purloining – call it what you will – the organized theft crisis in America is now a colossal industry, surpassing the $100 billion mark. Today, we're peeling back the layers on this syndicate from the perspective of a former professional booster turned author who's no stranger to skid row or the dark abyss of addiction. The walkways and aisles of Walmart, Nordstrom, Whole Foods, and numerous others are swiftly becoming the highways of professional shoplifters. Store closures have become routine news, while sections of once bustling cities face retail abandonment. In a society grappling with this epidemic, are we just bystanders, or inadvertent enablers? The true crime story lies behind the labyrinth of swinging gates and locked up goods, where organized retail theft is not just thriving, but mushrooming into a rampant epidemic. From makeup to over-the-counter medications, everyday essentials are being lifted and sold at a fraction of their value, enabling perpetrators to sustain their unsavory habits. While politicians are quick to attribute these thefts to economic disparity, let's not forget, a Gucci purse is hardly a necessity. The real victims here are the businesses that suffer, and the law-abiding customers who, quite literally, pay the price. As corporations scramble to protect their bottom lines, the question remains: how do we rewrite this narrative? It's time to call out this unchecked thievery for what it truly is, and put an end to the shoplifting epidemic that's sweeping across the nation. This isn't just about making the shelves of Macy's or Ulta safe again. Guest: Ana Oprea, Staff Security Engineer, European Lead of Vulnerability Coordination Center @ Google Topics: What is the scope for the vulnerability management program at Google? Does it cover OS, off-the-shelf applications, custom code we wrote … or all of the above? Our vulnerability prioritization includes a process called “impact assessment.” What does our impact assessment for a vulnerability look like? How do we prioritize what to remediate? How do we decide on the speed of remediation needed? How do we know if we've done a good job? When we look backwards, what are our critical metrics (SLIs and SLOs) and how high up the security stack is the reporting on our progress? What of the “Google Approach” should other companies not try to emulate? Surely some things work because of Google being Google, so what are the weird or surprising things that only work for us? Guest: Karan Dwivedi, Security Engineering Manager, Enterprise Infrastructure Protection @ Google Cloud Topics: Google's use of Google Cloud is a massive cloud environment with wildly diverse use cases. Could you share, for our listeners, a few examples of the different kinds of things we're running in GCP? Given that we're doing these wildly different things in GCP, how do we think about scaling the right security guardrails to the right places in our GCP org? How do you work with application engineering teams and project owner teams to make sure the right controls are there but not getting in the way of business? How do we scale this exemption management process? Are there things we do here that don't make sense at a smaller scale? Are there emergent challenges that only we would face? How do you correctly federate security responsibilities between the central team defining policy and the constituent user teams actually using the platform? Burnout is a perennial challenge for security teams–what're you doing to keep your people happy and engaged? In the first episode of the New Year, the CONVERSATION first looks back at 2022 and then to the future. There is an accounting from DICK BOVE of the massive wealth that evaporated in the stock and crypto markets last year. In equities alone, some $30 in market value was erased, posing risks for the future course of the American economy, he says. "You can't have a strong economy and a strong market if money is evaporating, " says BOVE, chief financial strategist at ODEON CAPITAL GROUP. The CONVERSATION looks more closely at this wealth destruction and the easy money policies that led to this and record inflation. Inflation is widely slammed by analysts and economists as a bad outcome. But MAT VAN ALSTYNE. ODEON co-founder and managing partner, posits that inflation may actually be one way for a nation to regain control of its economy. Japan is then examined by VAN ALSTYNE as an economy that has defied, "all logic and expectations" despite decades of underlying structural problems and a mountain of debt Meanwhile, there is major global cyclical change underway, according to BOVE. Yet, he says, many investors and many in the media are missing the point, failing to recognize that a major adjustment has begun. "I strongly believe that the new cycle developing in the United States economy will be dramatically different than the old one that is dying at present," according to BOVE. In this new cycle, investment determinations are based on risk adjusted return on capital, or RAROC. Joining the CONVERSATION is JOHN AIDAN BYRNE. Questions & Comments: Podcast@OdeonCap.com

Some key takeaways/thoughts from Dmitriy's point of view: Organizational design and change management is "like a knife fight" - you are going to get cut but if you do it well, you can choose where you get cut. There is no perfect org, and there will be pain somewhere but you can influence what will hurt, and make it not life-threatening. There is too much separation between data engineering and software engineering. Data engineering is just a type of software engineering with a focus on dealing with data. We have to stop treating them like completely different practices. When communicating internally, always focus on telling people the why before you get to the how. If they don't get why you are doing it, they are far less likely to be motivated to address the issue or opportunity. This applies to getting teams to take ownership of the data they produce, but also to everything else. There is often a rush to use tech over talk. Conversation is a powerful tool and will set you up so your tools can help you address the challenges once people are aligned. Paving over challenges with tech will not go well. Build your data platform such that the central data platform team is unnecessary in conversations between data producers and data consumers. That way, your team won't become a bottleneck. Try to reduce cognitive load on the users - they shouldn't have to deeply understand the platform and its inner workings just to leverage it. "Data debt is debt forever." You can certainly 'pay it down' but data debt typically has a much longer life than even the initial source system that supplied the data. Take it on consciously. Looking to hire or grow full-stack engineers for an ever-growing definition of stack (backend, frontend, security, ops, QA, UX, data...) is probably not a great idea, we can't keep piling new domains on people and expect them to be good at all of them. Instead, look to build full-stack teams, and tools that look and feel sufficiently similar that e.g. "data...
Despite record inflation, President Joe Biden signed an executive order that will spend hundreds of billions of dollars to wipe out student loan debt for millions of Americans. However, quietly and without much fanfare, the Biden administration has actually slowly been making reversals to their student loan forgiveness program and scaling back the eligibility requirements—meaning that those who initially thought they qualified actually no longer do. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch
