It is an honor and a privilege to welcome back Ethan Zohn to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Ethan became a household name when he first appeared on Survivor: Africa, the third season of the legendary US reality TV competition. He won seven challenges and the title of “Sole Survivor.” He appeared on Survivor: All-Stars, where he won four challenges but lasted only 21 days, and returned to compete in the milestone season Survivor: Winners at War, where he only won one challenge and lasted 35 days.Since Survivor, Ethan has become an influential social entrepreneur. With a portion of his Survivor: Africa winnings, he co-founded Grassroots Soccer (GRS). GRS is an adolescent health organization that harnesses the power of soccer to provide young people with essential information, services, and mentorship they need to lead healthier lives. Since its inception, GRS has expanded to 60 countries in Africa and worldwide, has graduated 13 million youth, and has worked with scores of public—and private-sector partners. He also raised his voice to fight cancer. Cancer-free since 2012, Ethan Zohn has been a voice for fighters, survivors, and caregivers of all ages, even chronicling the gritty details of his entire cancer experience for People Magazine. While undergoing treatment, he ran and finished the New York City and Boston marathons to help spread messages of hope and resilience to the world. Ethan is a champion for investment in new medical research and technology. He is an advisor to numerous hospitals and foundations, such as Cancer Buddy, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and Memorial Sloan Kettering. As demonstrated by his charitable work, tzedakah, and community involvement, Ethan believes that Jewish values can achieve a better and healthier world. His inspiration to help heal the world stems from being taught at an early age the importance of community, a connection to the Jewish faith, and the preservation of Israel. Ethan shares his deep bond to Judaism, his connection to the Jewish community, and his relationship with Israel by partnering with Jewish organizations that do critical work worldwide, such as BBYO, the Jewish National Fund, and Maccabi USA.On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Ethan Zohn discussed Survivor's impact on Reality TV, creating the Crunch Bowl, combating antisemitism, and previewing Grassroots Soccer's Changemaker Cup.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

As a chemotherapy patient, he had to go to the illegal market to get his cannabis. Ethan Zohn is a world traveller, sports commentator, public speaker and, oh yeah, he won Survivor Africa in 2001. The Inside Scoop with Anytime Soccer Training - Discussing Youth Soccer from Around the World
In this episode of Inside Scoop, host Neil Crawford sits down with Jay Carney, a distinguished soccer coach from England who's been living in the U.S. for over 20 years. Jay's book, US, US Grassroots Soccer: Great on Paper, S-H-I-T on Grants, caught Neil's attention, and they discuss key insights from the book, Jay's journey in soccer, and his experiences in both the U.S. and England. Jay reflects on his childhood in Bolton, near Manchester, where soccer was a street game played with friends, often with makeshift goals and no referees. Organized soccer wasn't a big part of his upbringing due to family circumstances, but a neighborhood move led him to join a local team at 15. This experience kickstarted his 15-year journey in semi-professional soccer, where he learned the value of good team dynamics and character over individual talent. Jay shares his thoughts on youth soccer in England, contrasting his experiences with modern academy systems. He talks about how, when he was growing up, the focus was on playing the game for fun and development, rather than formal academy training. He also touches on the importance of locker rooms full of good characters and the impact of team culture on performance. The conversation dives deeper into how youth soccer in England compared to what Jay has encountered in the U.S. over the past two decades, including the differences in grassroots soccer development and how it has evolved. Jay's insights offer valuable perspectives on the state of youth soccer in both countries and the critical role of character and team culture in shaping young players. Belz is joined by Kirk Kinsey, director of Flagstaff Revolution, a grassroots club in Arizona, and Jesse Howe, the director of coaching at the Calvert Soccer Association, a grassroots soccer program in Maryland. All three of us are working in the trenches of rec soccer, trying to help more kids learn to love the ball and the game. Jesse just got back from a national symposium on grassroots soccer in Minneapolis, and he gives a brief report on that, and then we just talk through a lot of the challenges and some solutions that work in coaching U6 and U8 rec soccer. It's a long conversation and we cover a lot of topics, but I bet you'll enjoy it, find things to disagree with, and maybe even find a few things to agree with!Subscribe to Scuffed on Patreon! Ethan is a retired professional soccer player who competed and won in Survivor-Africa. He went...
He's one of the most famous competitors on one of the most popular TV shows of all time, SURVIVOR. Season 3 winner - in Africa - Ethan Zohn joins me on the "Run The Race" podcast to talk about being on that reality TV show 3 times, beating cancer twice with the help of fitness, helping kids worldwide through soccer, and how cannabis can help with overall wellness. (4:26) Ethan is also about to run the Boston Marathon - on Monday, April 18, to celebrate being in remission from cancer for 10 years! For that race, he's working with companies to promote cannibas and being active to fight cancer. He also talks about last running Boston in 2013 when the terrorist bombing happening, and being pulled 2 miles before the finish line. What was it like for (9:01) this former pro soccer player to be diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer in his mid 30's? It was ups and downs - with support from others too - then there's the fear of cancer coming back. (11:36) Fitness also played a big role in his cancer fight, and now he uses sports and his fame to deliver important health messages, including erasing the stigma on alleged "gateway drug" cannibas. (15:14) Ethan takes us through how he was picked to be in Survivor: Africa in 2001, thanks to an audition on VHS tape. He calls it a "game of relationships...and networking" that tens of millions of people watch. He also talks about how the game on TV has changed like with social media, how he went back for season 40, and how he lost 30 pounds in 35 days while on Survivor. This athlete (21:31), after experiences playing soccer in Zimbabwe and playing with HIV+ kids in Africa while on the show Survivor, also co-founded "Grassroots Soccer." He explains how they use soccer to help children overcome health challenges. Ethan says sports like that break down barriers, and believes plant-based wellness can do that too vs. taking lots of pills. (29:13) Mental strength is also important. Ethan talks about his visualization before a big event like a marathon, and why he got involved with taking/promoting cannibas. We close our chat with his final preps for the Boston Marathon and I ask if he'll ever play "Survivor" again. (36:36) I also give a recap of my experience at GO! St. Louis for what is now my fastest marathon, then (41:58) "Parting Gift" from the Bible about surviving troubles, and a closing Prayer. Thanks for listening! And tell your friends about the #RunTheRace podcast. Subscribe to it! For more info, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.
Excited to welcome Jerad Minnick, Director of Grounds and Environmental Management for Maryland SoccerPlex, to the podcast. We will be talking about tips and tricks to getting your fields ready for the spring season and how to keep them looking good.
Today's guest is a former professional soccer player, the winner of season 3 Survivor Africa, and an entrepreneur. Ethan Zohn played goalkeeper for the Highlanders F.C. as part of the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League. Being a professional athlete in Africa came with many new experiences that would prove important in his post-soccer life. Upon retiring, He was looking for his next adventure, so he applied for the hit reality TV show, Survivor. Ethan was selected to participate in season 3: Survivor Africa. While recording the show in Kenya, Ethan won a challenge that earned him a day away from the competition. During his sightseeing, Ethan stumbled across a hospital that had dozens of kids hanging out in the parking lot. True to form, Ethan started an impromptu soccer game. While playing with the kids, Ethan was confused. Why would here be so many children hanging out in the parking lot of a hospital? The answer would lead Ethan to his next purpose. Every child in the parking lot was there, because they were HIV or AIDS positive. This would turn out to be the pinnacle moment for Ethan. He realized he needed to do something. Understanding the impact of soccer on local communities, Ethan leveraged his influence, took his $1million winnings, and founded the non-profit Grassroots Soccer. Today Grassroots Soccer promotes HIV and AIDS prevention education to Africa's youth, through soccer. Ethan is an amazing human doing amazing things in the world. Enjoy the episode. In this episode Ethan discusses Stop trying to find your purpose through what gives you joy and focus on what moves you emotionally. Even if it's negative emotion. How to leverage your platform to do something important. Immerse yourself into the cause before you start your non-profit. Make sure this is what you want to do with your time. How to use what you know and what you are good at to solve the problems that are important to you. Been looking forward to picking Michael's brain for a while now, and this chat did't disappoint. In our 2 hour 10minute brief chat we examined a multitude of Grassroots topics and Michael breaks down his entire Grassroots model he has employed at the clubs he has led. So many ideas that you can learn from and implement at your club or team, Michael is one of the few people I have net so far that has a detailed plan and system that has proven to work in developing the skills and knowledge of young players. Don't miss this one
Had to have Dave back on the podcast after his brief appearance on episode 2 I felt there was some unfinished business! Dave gives us an in-depth look at the structure of grassroots football in Ireland, he explains how clubs work, cost structure and fees. We also delve into the structure of Soccer in the USA and Canada and I get Daves take on our structure and some of the major differences. Ethan Zohn is a humanitarian, inspirational speaker and television host; former professional soccer player; cancer survivor and advocate; winner of the hit reality television show, CBS’sSurvivor: Africa; contestant on season 40 of Survivor: Winners at War, author and inventor; and co-founder of the global non-profit, Grassroot Soccer. He has found purpose through his humanitarian work and community involvement, and believes that a better and healthier world can be achieved through education, advocacy and inspiration. In 2002, Ethan used a portion of his Survivor: Africa winnings to help found Grassroots Soccer (GRS), an adolescent health organization that leverages the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilize at-risk youth in developing countries to overcome their greatest health challenges, live healthier, more productive lives, and be agents for change in their communities. To date, the organization has reached over 2.9 million youth in over 60 countries with critical health information, access to health services, and mentorship. Ever the tireless and creative promoter, in 2008, Ethan embarked on a record-breaking 550-mile journey on foot, from Boston, MA to Washington, D.C., dribbling a soccer ball the entire route, to raise money and build awareness for GRS. In 2009, as a fit, active, 35-year-old former professional soccer player who had traveled the world on behalf of the international health community through Grassroot Soccer, Ethan became an unlikely face of cancer. Diagnosed not once but twice with CD20+ Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in the span of several years, Ethan endured years of aggressive treatment, including two stem cell transplants. Never losing optimism, spirit, or humor despite extraordinary rigors and setbacks, Ethan used his journey and considerable platform to connect with others – young adults in particular – and offer much-needed inspiration, advice, and comfort. Ethan is a graduate of Vassar College, and he has played and coached soccer professionally in Zimbabwe, the United States, and as a member of the US National team for the 1997 and 2001 Maccabiah Games in Israel and 2004 Pan-American Maccabiah Games in Chile. In recognition for his work Ethan was awarded the 2004 Nkosi Johnson Community Spirit Award by the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care, the Heroes Among Us Award from the Boston Celtics and the Massachusetts State Health Department, and the Auxilia Chimusoro Award from the US State Department in Zimbabwe. Key Points from the Episode with Ethan Zohn: Ethan’s philosophy in life is service over self, making happiness real for other people Leading with compassion and empathy versus business and money creates an authentic, vulnerable leader Ethan won the show Survivor in its third season, taking place in Kenya, Africa He went in with this intention to lie, cheat and steal to win, but once he got out there, he realized that wasn’t who he was, and couldn’t play that way He realized how much you need to know yourself and play in alignment with that or it won’t work out Ethan grew up outside of Boston with his parents and two older brothers When Ethan was 14, his father passed away from colorectal cancer The community reached out to support his mother, him and his brothers, teaching him the importance of supporting those who need you He played soccer in college, and then went on to play professionally in Zimbabwe, Africa After winning Survivor, Ethan co-founded a charity called Grassroots Soccer to help raise money and create support for those dealing with HIV and AIDS in Africa Ethan himself ended up with a cancer diagnoses (Lymphoma) at age 35 while training for the NYC Marathon Being diagnosed with cancer was such an eye-opener for Ethan, especially in his AIDS work, to really appreciate what it means to get that diagnosis and face a battle for your life He also learned the impact of philanthropy and support at an even deeper level and how much it means not to have to face a life-threatening challenge alone He does a lot of public speaking, including talking about failure a lot, which may be surprising given what he’s achieved His path was all born of failure, as jobs didn’t work out and he had nothing to do, so he and his friend worked on Survivor submissions, landing him a spot in Season 3 He was asked to join Season 40: Winners at War, and got back into the show to see how it changed since the last time he played (Season 8: Survivor All Stars) In Season 40, there was an island you go to when you’re voted out called The Edge of Extinction (EOE), which acts like a purgatory where you can quit but are also fighting to get back into the game, which creates a mental struggle every day This mirrors so much of the mental journey of fighting cancer that Ethan experienced – having to choose to stay in the fight with the temptation to just give up and not face anything anymore, feeling alone on an island and more He got so thin and was emotionally ravaged, his wife came out to visit during the Loved Ones Visit, and saw his struggle There was a log challenge where they had to carry 20 logs across the island before sun down, and Ethan passed out while on log 16 He expected people who take advantage of his going down since they were all competing for $2 million, but they rallied around him and helped him finish, which was a great reminder of the humanity that can transcend even that level of financial gain Ethan lives by the saying that you never let a crisis go to waste For every crisis in his life, he’s chosen to focus on it and do good through that situation He shifts the failure mindset into one of not trying, so rather than worrying about the failure, he thinks about all the things he’d miss if he never tries, whether that’s achievements or learning experiences When he was diagnosed in 2009 with Lymphoma, he made a choice to be public about it, working with People Magazine to chronicle his journey The public battle, which he won, setup a strong sense of failure 20 months later when the cancer came back He had felt built up as a hero and source of inspiration, and then felt like he failed those who were looking to him when it didn’t work This resonates today so much as there are so many things people are going to be trying and failing with home schooling, work, how to get food, stay safe and healthy and so much more It feels foreign, scary and uncertain – things Ethan understands all too well, but he also sees himself prepared for because of his cancer journey There are only two things in life that we have to be completely certain about We are all going to have to die, and We are all going to have to live until we die That means we have to ensure we live the life we want to live Acceptance is key to survival – once you accept what you’re facing, you can move to the next phase where you get to see a path to the other side It’s ok to just survive something, just getting through this is ok – advice that’s so relevant to the current situation Links: Website: ethanzohn.com Cameo: https://www.cameo.com/ethanzohn Facebook: @ethanzohnsurvivor Instagram:@ethanzohn Twitter: @ethanzohn Subscribe to The Do a Day Podcast Keep Growing with Do a Day Get Bryan's best-selling first book,Do a Day, which is the inspiration for this show and can help you overcome your greatest challenges and achieve in life. How the f**k did Ethan Zohn win season 3 of Survivor, start a non-profit with his winnings, and survive his own battles with cancer? Today we’re chatting with Ethan about his journey from the soccer world into the reality world and then into the non-profit world. Ethan was a professional soccer player rising through the USL and overseas leagues when in 2001, he filmed an audition tape (after some drinks) to be on the CBS hit show “Survivor.” He ended up not only participating in the show, but winning the whole thing along with one million dollars. Since then he’s done things like run both the New York Marathon and Boston Marathon and dribble a soccer ball from Boston to DC to raise awareness for non-profits. He’s held titles like inspirational speaker, World Cup Soccer analyst, and appeared on ABC, ESPN Discovery Channel, and Outside TV. He’s beaten cancer not once, but twice, and still today, Ethan is a co-founder of the non-profit, Grassroots Soccer. So how did Ethan take his winnings and his passion for soccer to start his super successful non-profit? And what are some of his tips on how to thrive in quarantine?
It is such an honor and privilege to welcome one of my all-time favorite Survivor winners, Ethan Zohn, to The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Ethan Zohn became a household name when he appeared on the third season of the long-running CBS Reality TV series: Survivor. Ethan outwitted, outlasted, and outplayed some of the show’s top players to become the Survivor: Africa winner. However, he ran into bad luck when he returned to 2004’s Survivor: All-Stars. Since his time on the show, Ethan blossomed as a social entrepreneur. In 2002, he co-founded Grassroots Soccer, where his team combined soccer with teaching their athletes self-reliance and critical life skills such as HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. Since its inception, Grassroots Soccer has spread to 50 countries in Africa and worldwide. He has also raised his voice in supporting the Jewish community. Ethan Zohn has partnered with various organizations, including BBYO, the Jewish National Fund, and Maccabi USA. Ethan bravely documented his cancer battle with People Magazine and has been cancer-free since 2012. He has championed investments for new medical research and technology. He served as an advisor for both the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Memorial Sloan Kettering. Ethan Zohn also teamed up with the creators of Survivor to launch Survivor Stand Up to Cancer. In this edition of The Jake’s Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Ethan Zohn talked about his return to Survivor: Winners at War and revealed why it was his last time playing the iconic game. He also spoke about his successful social media campaigns regarding Old School Survivor and his hilarious Postcards from the Edge.

Rob Adams '90 joins the podcast for a conversation about raising four children during a global pandemic and the variety of challenges he has faced during his career. Rob served as the President of Simon Pearce during the 2008-2009 Great Recession, President and COO of Grassroots Soccer fighting HIV AIDS in Africa, and overcame the destruction of his company's production facility by fire as the COO of Solaflect. Rob is an incredibly upbeat and resilient person. This conversation is a perfect antidote for these difficult times.
Description Bald, gloved, masked up and looking for drug dealer in New York. This is not a recent COVID-19 story. This is a story of former pro soccer player Ethan Zohn. Ethan didn't do drugs in his youth because he was an elite athlete. Now in his thirties, Ethan had cancer, and cannabis helped his symptoms. As a chemotherapy patient, he had to go to the illegal market to get his cannabis. Ethan Zohn is a world traveller, sports commentator, public speaker and, oh yeah, he won Survivor Africa in 2001. Ethan is back in the 40th Season of Survivor: Winners at War. Join Kirk and Trevor to find out how older brothers kicking balls at your head can be a career path. Ethan Zohn is a former professional soccer player who was selected to compete in the third season of Survivor... which he won. He used his winnings to start a fantastic non-profit, Grassroots Soccer, which uses soccer to help kids around the world. Then he developed a rare form of cancer-- which he beat, twice. Along the way, he played Survivor again (but lost), ran a few marathons, raised a lot of money for charity, and moved up to a beautiful cabin in the New Hampshire woods with his wife. He recently competed in his third season of Survivor, in which all the contestants are past winners. Kinda like an All-Star game. The season is airing now, so no spoilers. I've known Ethan for many years now, and have always admired him. I've wanted to interview him on the podcast, but it was always hard to coordinate travel to NH to make it happen. Well, we were planning to do the interview in Boston this week before he ran the Boston Marathon. But that was obviously canceled due to the coronavirus. But since the virus has also kicked me into doing our podcast interviews via Zoom we were able to do a walking Zoom podcast in which I walked in NYC and Ethan walked in the beautiful NH woods by his home. (I'm jealous.) It was the perfect time to do the interview too. Because Ethan knows a bit about surviving in times of uncertainty. Huge thanks to Ethan for sharing so much with us. #EveryMileMatters

USL has spurred a lot of growth in the game in small and middle markets, but when they decided to try in Chattanooga, the existing infrastructure, at least for now, has proven to be much stronger. Today Pete talks to Andrew Bresee and Matt Coniglio, longtime members of the Chattahooligans, an independent supporters group for NPSL side Chattanooga FC. It's the quintessential American success story in Grassroots soccer, so we talk about what got the club to the success it holds today, what's coming in the future, and what USL's injection into the city with their own club says about some of US Soccer's biggest issues. The new league system put together by USL has opened the door for many cities to come out of the woodwork as potential markets for soccer. One notable one is Greenville, South Carolina. Nestled in between the southern lifestyle and growth of Modern America, the founding of Greenville Triumph SC has given an opportunity to highlight this once hidden gem in SEC country. This week, Pete talks to Joseph Bright, one of the founding members of the Triumph's supporters group, the Reedy River Riot, about Greenville as a city, what makes it a soccer city, and how, unlike some other notable cities in America, they are able to have a professional USL club and a popular Non League club (Greenville FC) working in harmony.
Before turning to the USMNT's overseas friendly, we first shine a light on soccer here at home, and specifically Sam's hometown of Madison (Wis.) where the latest addition to the USL was just unveiled. We sit down with Peter Wilt (aka the "Johnny Appleseed of Grassroots Soccer") and discuss his experiences with getting fledgling clubs -- including Indy Eleven and what is now Minnesota United -- up and running, and how that process has changed over the past few decades. We also discuss our difference of opinion about whether Sam will eventually lace 'em up and starts up top for Forward Madison, and Peter's thoughts on when/how Promotion/Relegation happens. Finally, it is on to our beloved USMNT (23:22) . Last week's spanking by England painted a bleak picture but it is always darkest before the dawn. Sam and Mikey pull some more positives from the wreckage of that game and (frankly) the last 12 months before highlighting what to watch for in this week's game against Italy, including preferred starting XIs and a sure-fire, can't-miss, never-wrong prediction. Last but not least we run through what turned out to be a pretty damn entertaining week of Nations League games in Europe (42:37), and debate whether Memphis Depay is in fact the next Messi.
This week the girls are joined by Survivor Africa winner Ethan Zohn! Beyond the reality show, Ethan is a true survivor, having beat cancer twice, and opens up about his journey. He also talks about forming his charity Grassroots Soccer, and gives some sol
Between The Posts Podcast: Keepers | Coaches | Parents | Soccer
In today's episode, Tyler discusses 5 key ideas every coach should know when supporting your team's goalkeeper. With today's podcast, we seek to include a few specific concepts that any coach, parent, or volunteer can communicate to their goalkeepers this season in order to encourage proper catching technique, communicating to teammates, and controlling their area to name a few. With everything, we introduce we encourage all listeners to really embrace the challenges that we all know exist when working with that one position on the field that doesn't quite make sense unless you've done it. We know that the challenges so many coaches face when supporting their team's goalkeeper is simply a lack of comfort with what they should be doing or saying. We hope to give you a few bite-size points to start to look for and convey to your team's goalie. We have all faced those key moments in a game where the goalkeeper became exposed and beaten yet as a coach we weren't quite sure how to educate them for the next opportunity. With these 5 simple topics, you can now start to encourage keepers to focus on these 5 pillars of goalkeeping to not only take their game to the next level but to also take your team to the next level. To be a goalkeeper is a lonely task on the pitch, as coaches, we want to empower you to connect, instruct, and support your keepers with a new found confidence and guidance that we hope to instill after spending some time with us during this episode.
Today we go beyond the surface with Ethan Zohn. Ethan has many chapters in his story. He played professional soccer, won $1,000,000 on the hit TV show Survivor, and is a cancer survivor, or thriver as we discuss in this episode. Ethan’s journey starts in the Northeast but has taken him all over the world. One of the places that has had a big influence on his life is Afirca, as he spent time there as a professional soccer player and a competitor on Survivor. That time inspired him to co-found Grassroots Soccer, who’s mission is to "mobilize the global soccer community to combat the AIDS epidemic in Africa.” Ethan will discuss how his experiences have greatly impacted how he sees the world and given him tremendous purpose in his life. Thanks to Ethan for being so vulnerable, especially with a stranger, and sharing your journey. If you want to follow Ethan on Twitter feel free to do so @EthanZohn and check out all the great work Grassroots Soccer is doing https://www.grassrootsoccer.org/.
