A mentor once told me, “Pay attention to what everyone else is doing, and do the opposite.” In other words…. Be the weirdo. Parenting tip -> Share this insight with your kids. I did. In a culture where kids feel more comfortable following the crowd and blending in (regardless of what consequences it may lead to), my kids are choosing to live a life that is set apart. They are different than most kids their age. It takes courage to go against the norm, and to stand strong when others roll their eyes or make fun of what they think is strange and unusual…. But my kids know the reward is great. The payoff of being “weird” is worth it. Join me on the podcast today, as I share 7 ways that my kids are weird in the eyes of the world, and why I'm perfectly okay with it. ————— Find this Episode on the Blog | KatieHedrick.com/205 ————— Helpful Homeschool Things You Should Know About! I never thought I would do this…. But I did. And I'm GLAD I did. I took the time to read a *gasp* fiction/fantasy novel. It's actually a big deal. Why? Because I'm a list making, box checking, type A, “don't do it if it might be a waste of time” kind of mom. But when my 16 year old daughter suggested a summer book swap challenge, I knew I should say yes, even though it was going to require me to sit down and chill for HOURS…. The basis for the challenge was simple: She would choose a book for me to read (her favorite book, “The Goose Girl”) and I would choose a book for her to read (a personal growth book called “The Greatest Miracle in the World”). We had to read the books completely and finish before the end of summer. We agreed to the terms and in July, I reluctantly sat down to read the first fiction book I'd held in my hands in years…. Maybe even decades… What happened in the days that followed shocked me. But like a good book, I won't give it all away here. Remember when… “Screen time” wasn't even really a thing… “Online” didn't seem like such a scary place… Social media felt more social than lonely… I'm guessing all of that was back before you were a parent, right? Story time! (How fitting for today's topic of language skills and literature?) It was the very first day of our homeschooling journey. The kids and I cracked open the Language Arts curriculum I'd chosen… I hadn't thought to pre-screen the material (rookie mistake) and I began to read the instructions out loud: “Circle all the prepositions.” Horrified, my kids and I stared at each other blankly and we all wanted to cry. “A prepo-what???” I had pulled my kids out of public school, and coming from public school myself, none of us knew what in the world a preposition was. I was the mom. I was the teacher. I was supposed to be leading this whole thing and I didn't even know what a preposition was!? I felt like a failure and I quickly realized that curriculum was NOT going to work for us. I began desperately searching for an effective way to teach my kids language skills. Although my kids are quick learners, I knew this process was going to take divine intervention, because grammar seemed difficult to understand, and to teach. No one was inspired to write, nor did we have any kind of a system in place for learning how to do it well. Enter the unsung hero: Mr. Andrew Pudewa, founder of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). Mr. Pudewa had a system in place (“Structure and Style for Students”) that included easy-to-use videos, pre-selected source texts and key word outlines. On top of that, his charming personality stole the hearts of my kids and if I'm being honest, it stole my heart too. Mr. Pudewa's method for helping homeschool families thrive was unlike anything I'd seen before. My kids became strong, inspired writers (and grammar wizards). Most importantly though, they fell in love with reading and writing and thinking. When I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Pudewa in person, I quickly realized how authentic, engaging and witty he was. I invited him to join me on the podcast and he graciously agreed to share his time and expertise. So, today you are in for an absolute treat! You can head to the podcast now to take in a conversation that is full of tips to help you cultivate language skills in your homeschool. Mr. Pudewa is sharing book recommendations, encouragement for homeschooling moms, one of his famous jokes and so much more! Trust me when I say… this is a don't miss episode! I did a thing. I invited my three kids onto the podcast to talk openly and honestly about their thoughts on homeschooling. Nothing was pre-scripted and I didn't even tell them the questions I would be asking. I wanted them to share off the cuff, and from their hearts. They didn't hold back and a few of their answers even surprised me (in a good way)! So often, we hear the mom's take on homeschooling, but it's a whole different thing to hear it from the perspective of the kids being homeschooled. Join us for the conversation, as the kids answer questions like… What's been your favorite thing about homeschooling? What has surprised you? What's been most challenging for you? Don't do it, mom. Don't tell yourself that lie again. Eek! I've done it too. We all have. It's so easy to whisper little lies into your own heart… “I'm not qualified to teach my kids.” “What if I'm failing them?” “What if they fall behind?” “I don't have enough hours in the day to make this all work.” “I'm not doing enough.” There's a BIG problem with those little lies. Whatever you're telling yourself, your brain believes it to be true. And get this… your brains starts LOOKING for ways to back it up. Let's break up with the lies, friend. For years and years, my kids were in public school. (I was public schooled myself!) I never dreamed that I could or would be homeschooling them. Yet, here we are… God spent years, whispering to my heart, “what if you homeschooled?” Meanwhile, he slowly opened some doors and closed other ones. He transformed my mama heart from feeling unqualified and unequipped, to one that overflows with joy and gratitude. All because of… homeschooling. Today, I'm sharing about the journey that my family has been on. One with twists and turns… one that took our family from public school to living the homeschool life… one that transformed us into a thriving family who is growing in relationship with God and each other. I wouldn't trade what we've found for anything. Mom Anger. Without going ANY deeper, I know that if you're a mom, you understand. You've seen it. You've felt it. And you wish you had better self-control over it. Right? Galatians 5:22-23 talks about the fruit of the spirit, and how we should be living out self-control in our daily lives. But it can be SO hard. Especially when we're tired, or when we're easily triggered. You know what I'm talking about… The kids start arguing or back-talking, or you're running late and someone's clothes “just don't feeeeeeeel right” as you're trying to get out the door. Ahhhhh! It wells up inside you and then…. BOOM! Mom anger explosion. (For the record, I've wrestled with this too. You are SO not alone.) So, let's do something about it! Samantha Semans, founder of The Abundant Woman Collective and I are diving deep into #momanger today on the podcast. Join us to learn about: How to manage the things that trigger you Self-care (what it really is) and ways that you can fill your cup What it looks like to “redeem mom anger” 3 practical ways for you to have more self-control You'll love Samantha's quirky, relatable, loving-truth approach. As a mom, you want deep connection and a great relationship with your children, right? But it can be HARD to get them to open up. The tough topics are important, mama. And there are so many benefits to going there. Stephanie Kelsey joins me on the podcast today to chat about why it's important to have the hard conversations with your kids. We're going deep (on a spicy topic) in today's episode of Joy at Home. You guessed it… we're talking about sex. And about how to talk to your husband ABOUT sex (and other tough topics). After your relationship with the Lord, your marriage should be the next thing on your priority list. Yet, how often do you find yourself going through the motions day after day, doing (or not doing) things out of obligation? As wives, we're really missing out… on the connection that hard conversations bring, on the gift that marriage is, on the beauty of building trust and intimacy, on the deepening of relationship with our spouse, and (yes!) even on the pleasure that sex should bring. Relationship Coach, Mary Whitman-Ortiz is joining me today to share her best tips about how you can have fruitful conversations with your husband. She's also sharing about what to do when difficult, uncomfortable topics come up. Ultimately, Mary is bringing a ton of encouragement to let you know that having hard conversations about sex can and will lead to a healthy, fulfilling sex life and marriage for both you and your spouse!
Jen Weaver is no stranger to having hard conversations with God. After the loss of a baby, and undiagnosed fertility struggles, Jen found herself deep in grief and going “God-adjacent,” instead of running to Him with her heart and problems. It wasn't until she pivoted and chose to bring her heartbreak before the Lord in conversation, that she began to find healing. You know, sometimes we just don't want to talk to God, we'd rather run and hide instead, and sometimes we don't want to hear what God has to say… Yet, He faithfully stands ready to hold us and to hear our prayers. Because that's who He is. Join Jen and me on the podcast today as we talk about conversations with God and dive into questions like… “Where do I start in approaching God with a hard conversation?” “Does God even want to talk to me?” “How do I hear Him?” and “What if I don't hear Him?” I think you'll come out the other side ready to slip into a wonderful conversation with your Heavenly Father. Have you ever found yourself sweating bullets over a hard conversation that NEEDS to happen? Conflict might not feel good, especially if you're non-confrontational, but unresolved conflict can feel even worse. Like a wound that festers, sometimes the problem continues to grow and it can create bitterness in your heart. The answer? Have the conversation. Even when it's hard. Lyncon Martinez, host of Gather the Gals, is joining me on the podcast today for a deep dive into how to have those hard conversations, while maintaining Biblical grace and honor. From talking to your in-laws or your spouse, to dealing with uncomfortable conversations involving your close friends, Lyncon and I will help you navigate the tough moments and help you find the courage you need, so that the conversation can happen and the healing can begin. ————— Find this Episode on the Blog | KatieHedrick.com/185 ————— Looking for Your Next Step? If you're anything like me, then you know that there's nothing worse than being faced with a situation and not knowing what choice to make. I'm talking about the tough decisions, like “I'm supposed to be in two places at once. Which one do I choose?” Or “there's a hard situation at my workplace. My husband gave me this piece of advice, my best friend gave me that piece of advice. How should I actually handle the challenging circumstance?” (In other words, not things like “do I order the guac or the queso?” That one's easy!) I'm talking about the hard stuff. The uncomfortable stuff. The situations and choices that leave you stuck in analysis paralysis because you just don't know what to do. There is a way to eliminate the decision fatigue. It starts with knowing your core values… the foundational beliefs that anchor your life. Today on the podcast, I'm giving the low down on what core values are, why they are so important and we'll identify some values that you're probably never even thought of before. By the end of today's episode, you'll be ready to make your next choice BEFORE there's even a choice to make! Let's make the decision making process MUCH simpler for you. Sound good? This past summer, our area was going through a major drought. We went days, then weeks, then months without a single drop of rain. It became so intense that it was almost as if you could hear the earth crying out in desperation for the rain to come. I walked down to our pond, which was 6 feet lower than usual. I studied the ground closely. It was parched, dusty and barren. There were cracks in the ground, so large, that I could fit my entire hand down into them. It made me think about life. You see, some of us don't like the rain. We long for warm days. We want sunshine all the time. We want to live in a constant season of #blessed and #thankful. We want the perfect life that looks great on Instagram with no troubles of any kind. The problem is… if we don't have some rainy days, if we don't walk through any struggles or tough seasons, then our lives become like the dry, cracked ground. There is no growth. Everything becomes stagnant. Eventually, we begin to cry out in need of the rain, just like earth does. You see… discomfort and the rainy seasons are good things. Whether we like the rain or not, we NEED the rain. We NEED to experience life outside of our comfort zone so that we can grow.
Hey friend. Have you ever found yourself replaying past pain over and over in your mind? Or even reliving the pain and asking “why?” I've been there, too. Recently, I attended a women's conference and God spoke some eye-opening things into my heart. He reminded me that there is purpose in the pain. There is growth in the pain. And perhaps most importantly…. God sees us in our pain. In the Bible, we can read the story of Hagar. In today's terms, we would say she was “used and abused.” She endured pain that just didn't make sense. But as her story continued to unfold, we are shown how God saw her in her pain, how He was with her in her pain, how He called her by name and how He blessed her when she chose obedience. I'm sharing Hagar's story on the podcast today, and walking you through the first steps you need to take when it comes to your own healing journey. Let's talk about the STUFF in your house. Did you know that the amount of “stuff” around you affects you in more ways than one? Knowing that information raises the question: Is all of the “stuff” that you are hanging on to absolutely necessary? Or could letting go of some things equate to peace and more mental clarity?
