Baobabs are sometimes called the "tree of life" with their thick trunks, crown of branches and flowers that only open at twilight. But theories about their geographic origin was divided among three places: the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, the Kimberley region of western Australia and the dry forests of the island nation of Madagascar. To solve this mystery, a global research team led by scientists at the Wuhan Botanical Garden at the Chinese Academy of Sciences examined high-quality genomic data from all eight baobab species. Beyond lost livelihoods, Thatcher's policies shattered the secret world where miners passionately kissed each other and danced together in the pit. The Lion King, Walt Disney Pictures' 32nd Animated Feature Film, was released on June 24, 1994 to near universal critical and commercial acclaim. Many consider it to be one of Walt Disney Animation's greatest animated films, if not the greatest. It's an epic, coming-of-age story that has resonated with audiences for almost thirty years. For Chris, it gets a bit more personal (as it should on Movies That Matter). Chris takes an episode to himself to speak on The Lion King, and not just his personal connection to the film, but his late father's. Listen and discover the special meaning this film has to both father and son, in a special tribute to Chris's own Lion King, who passed away last year.
Join host Nora Ami as she dives into Tomohiko Morimi's novel 'The Tatami Galaxy,' an alternate history where the protagonist gets several chances to live his college life differently. We also explore Alexander Rose's 'The Lion and The Fox,' which captures an intriguing Confederate plot to build a fleet during the Civil War. The podcast highlights the complexities of the characters, the beautiful translation of the books, and the gripping depiction of historical events.
It's time for another visit from Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins us every week with her reviews of Maryland's regional stage. Today, she tells us about Everyman Theatre's new production of James Goldman's 1966 play, The Lion in Winter, a classic but still-resonant tale of power, political ambition and treachery, told through the travails of the 12th-centuury English king, Henry II, and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitane. The historical drama, which was adapted into an Oscar-winning 1968 film starring Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn, touches on themes that recur in today's rancorous pre-election American politics. The play is directed at The Everyman by the theater's founder and artistic director, Vincent Lancisi. His seven-member cast is led by Jefferson Russell as Henry II, and Deborah Hazlett as Eleanor. In supporting roles as the three royal sons are Zack Powell as Geoffrey, Ben Ribler as John and Grant Emerson Harvey as Richard, with Ryan Dalasung playing the young French king, Philip II, and Hannah Kelly playing Alais, Philip's sister (and Henry II's mistress). The Lion in Winter continues at Baltimore's Everyman Theatre through November 13.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week I'm bringing you a story from the American South, specifically from South Carolina and Georgia. 'The Lion and the Well', is one of the many Br’er Rabbit stories that orignated in West and Central Africa and were brought to America during the slave trade. Br’re Rabbit is a trickster, who can be short tempered and pretty selfish, but never-the-less is an entertaining protagonist. The retelling of this tale is inspired by a story of the same name from the book 'African American Folktales' by Roger D. Abrahams. To learn more about the African communities that brought Br'er Rabbit stories, among many others, to America, be sure to listen to Episode 12.b. let's learn about the Gullah-Geeche. RD begins this week by reading part of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Greg then jumps into some history of "captive Israel" and the revolution at the birth of Jesus. Greg also mentions the political spectrum of the apostles and disciples of Jesus. The two then transition to discussing how Jesus came not as a warrior in fire but as a baby, and how miraculous and crazy that is. RD brings it back to 2020 and how hopeless a year like this would be without the joy of Christmas and the birth of Jesus. Greg references when Father Christmas shows up in 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.' RD and Greg share that Jesus' birth brings hope and a savior to everyone, and breaks all of our bondages. RD ends the episode by sharing more from O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. After the murder of his father, a young lion prince flees his kingdom only to learn the true meaning of responsibility and bravery.
The conversations you never get to hear with DWNTWN, reminding us not to waste anytime with negativity. In this week's episode we celebrate Tommie Lee and Blac Chyna in #SHEHUSTLE (1:53), I share 5 things I learned from The Lion King, and why it is important(12:58). 1. Sometimes you have to separate yourself from people to know and understand yourself, 2. Just because they are family doesn't mean loyalty is something that automatically follows, 3. You need people around you that are not going to be yes men but always have the best intentions for you, 4. Take in the knowledge elders have to show you, even though their lingo is different, the story never changes, and 5. When you finally agree and understand who you are, you can confidently walk in your purpose (people can always tell you, but do you believe?). Have you heard of this company called Disney? You should have, because they might be around for awhile. The media titan had another banner week at the box office and in the news as the remake of 'The Lion King' scored the highest opening weekend EVER for an animated film (it's CGI-animated, not live-action). But also, Comic-Con was this week, and Marvel made a BIG splash by announcing their lineup of films for Phase Four, including 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness', 'Thor: Love and Thunder', and 'Blade' with Mahershala Ali, just to name a few. We discuss all this and more on this week's episode of The MovieBabble Podcast! It has been the summer of Disney when it comes to the big blockbusters and we review a huge one this week in the adaptation of animated classic in The Lion King. We also look at two Netflix originals in the buddy action flick starring Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo in Point Blank and then a Taiwanese sci-fi dystopian thriller meets crime noir in Cities of Last Things. We also talk about how modern film journalism has caused movies to be seen more as product than art, and we look at if it is harmful that Netflix is currently obsessed with creating as many original movies as possible. As always, we had a great time recording this show and we really hope you love it. If you do, then please help us out by spreading the word to other movie fans.Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).Four Star Movie Rating:Point Blank ** (CS) & *** (SM)The Lion King **½ (CS)Cities of Last Things *** (CS & SM)The Summer Box Office Challenge Draft Picks:Scott:1. Helen Mark visits the Malvern Hills. She meets a landscape historian, who shows her how human history has left its marks on the topography - if you know where to look for them. She finds out about the inspiration which the composer Edward Elgar drew from the area, and learns how the landscape is reflected in his music. Malvern is famous for its spring water, which has been bottled in the town since the 17th century. Helen meets the man who bought one of the springs by accident - and then went on to revive the Malvern spring water brand. The area is also known for its gas lamps, which are believed to have inspired C.S. Lewis in his description of the entrance to Narnia in 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. Helen finds that there are some very 21st century developments afoot for the Victorian gas lamps, and meets the man who's worked out how to power them using something which is in plentiful supply on the hills - dog poo! Produced by Emma Campbell.

This lecture is also available on YouTube: 👉http://bit.ly/2FBH4nY Throughout modern history, British and American rivalry has gone hand in hand with common interests. In this book Kathleen Burk examines the different kinds of power the two empires have projected, and the means they have used to do it. What the two empires have shared is a mixture of pragmatism, ruthless commercial drive, a self-righteous foreign policy and plenty of naked aggression. These have been aimed against each other more than once; yet their underlying alliance against common enemies has been historically unique and a defining force throughout the twentieth century. This is a global and epic history of the rise and fall of empires. It ranges from America's futile attempts to conquer Canada to her success in opening up Japan but rapid loss of leadership to Britain; from Britain's success in forcing open China to her loss of the Middle East to the US; and from the American conquest of the Philippines to her destruction of the British Empire. The Pax Americana replaced the Pax Britannica, but now the American world order is fading, threatening Britain's belief in her own world role. Speaker: Kathleen Burk is Professor Emerita of Modern and Contemporary History at University College London. Her general field is international history, concentrating especially on politics, diplomacy and finance. Kathleen specialises in the twentieth century, although publishes on earlier periods as well. Her primary area of research is Anglo-American relations, on which she has published three books and a number of articles, but she has also written on the history of merchant banks, and on international history generally. Furthermore, Kathleen writes on wine and its history, on which she has published a book and a number of articles.' Her newest book, 'The Lion and the Eagle: The Interaction of the British and American Empires, 1783-1972', will be published next June.' This lecture is given annually in memory of Professor Saki Ruth Dockrill, who first came to the Department of War Studies in 1983 as a research student supervised by successive Heads of Department, Wolf Mendl and Lawrence Freedman. She went to Yale University as a John M. Olin Fellow in 1988-89 before returning to the Department as a MacArthur Fellow and then in 1992 as a lecturer in war studies; promotion to senior lecturer followed in 1997 and then appointment to a personal chair as Professor of Contemporary History and International Security in 2003. Professor Dockrill was a leading international historian, with four substantial, well researched books to her credit and five edited or co-edited. One of her best books was a study of the defence policy of Harold Wilson's two Labour Governments, 1964-70, and she made a notable contribution to the revival of Wilson's reputation as Prime Minister that had begun in the early 1990s.
In this week's episode, we ask how digital transformation has changed the sphere of influence in global politics. For those of you who are unaware, Paul Scoones is the man behind the legendary New Zealand Doctor Who fanzine, Time Space Visualiser. He's also one half of the team who tracked down a missing episode of Doctor Who - specifically 'The Lion', a missing episode of the William Hartnell story 'The Crusade', back in 1999. He's the author of the excellent 'The Comic Strip Companion', dealing with Doctor Who comics, and he's also written the infotext subtitles on many of the classic era Doctor Who DVDs you've watched. Rob sits down with Paul and asks him to choose an item from his extensive collection for the Whotiques Roadshow. Paul selects a complete set of Doctor Who Target novels with a delightful twist... they're all in hardback. This leads the two on a discussion of the Target novels in general, what attracted Paul to the hardbacks, their value, plus what came later in the form of the Virgin New Adventures and Missing Adventures, BBC 8th Doctor and Past Doctor ranges, right up to the current BBC New Series Adventures.

The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
Disney is returning to the Pride Lands for a new Disney Channel animated series based on The Lion King called The Lion Guard. The series itself will get underway in January, but you can get your first look at the next generation of Lion King characters when The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar debuts on Disney Channel on November 22 at 7:00 p.m. It's a one-hour movie that introduces us to Kion, the second-born son of Simba and Nala—if you've ever seen the direct-to-video Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, you might recall Kion already has an older sister, Kiara. Kion is tasked with forming the Lion Guard, a group of young animals responsible for protecting the Pride Lands. And while the Lion Guard has traditionally been an all-lion team, Kion opts to include a variety of animals with their own special strengths. So you have Bunga, a brave honey badger; Ono, an intellectual egret; Fuli, a confident and very fast Cheetah; and Beshte, a good-humored and well-connected hippo. The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar is voiced by a mostly youthful cast, but there are some returning veterans. Just as he did in the original Lion King, Ernie Sabella will voice Simba's loyal warthog friend Pumbaa and James Earl Jones will be heard once again as Simba's wise father Mufasa. Simba is voiced by The Grinder's Rob Lowe and Gabrielle Union provides the voice of Nala. On Saturday, I got to hang out at the Walt Disney Studios for the premiere of The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar and chatted with members of the cast, including Max Charles, Joshua Rush, Dusan Brown, Atticus Shaffer, Ernie Sabella, Eden Riegel, Sarah Hyland, Madison Pettis, Jonny Rees and Khary Payton. They are all my guests today in The Mouse Castle Lounge. Enjoy! www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
Host Paul Dunn recommends the show 'The Lion in the House'. We need to unravel the Mystery of Disease. In the 21st century we've got to get back some of the most Basic, Common sense, Logical and Reasonable approaches to things that are wrong in the body. Most people are not aware that it is stated in Published Medical Journals that nearly every case of childhood Leukaemia was brought on by the Vaccinations they received as children. Today in the USA alone, Iatrogenic Genocide (doctor induced deaths) is the Number 3 killer of American people (2 million deaths per year). We have been Trained regarding 'Health Care' by the Medical schools that are built, paid for and whose curriculums are written and put into place by the Pharmaceutical Industry, who put in lobbyists and passed State Laws for state Licensing of the Medical Doctors all done by the pharmaceutical industry, the largest Industry in the World. Health care today is Sick care and it is the perpetuation of Disease for the sales and use of products and procedures. The Cancer Foundation have spent over 47 years and 3 Trillion Dollars in the War against Cancer, yet still they have no answer. We've gone from 1 in 8,000 people in 1908 having cancer, to 1 in 3 people today having cancer. What if Cancer is nothing but a Myth, it's actually our friend, what if the Body and its Autogenic Self Healing and Replicating system knows how to Heal itself if we will simply support the Process. There's so much Money in Fear and the Control that comes from that fear and the consumption of the procedures and the products and medications that play in all of that. We have to realise that Physically the Human body is nothing more and nothing less than a set of tubes and there's only so many things that can happen to tubes, they can be Smashed, Cut, Burnt, become Weak in there lining and Burst, Balloon or most commonly become Clogged. Clogged tubes is the money making mystery and 90% of all human disease. Alot of people don't realise that the Symptoms of disease are the bodies method of Curing the disease. Instead of getting to the real cause of the Problem we take that symptom and treat it like it is the problem. 9 out of 10 Headaches are caused by Dehydration of the brain, people aren't drinking enough water. When we Medicate we are stopping the bodies cure, not Assisting it We need to get clear on how to support the body so that it can undo all the crap and the Macrophage (large Eating Cells) will come in and take on the construction. Don't take your Doctors word for anything and don't take lab tests first time around, get a different lab test if your really that concerned, but make sure the labs don't know each other. It is absolutely the Reverse and we are creating the Death of Millions of people in our Attack and in our Fight against Disease. More people die of the Treatments for Prostate and Breast Cancer in the USA than any other cancers, and yet by there own Admission those 2 cancers are the most easily Remitted on your own. Don says "I'm just a guy, that understands some simple little things that have worked for Humanity for Thousands of years, and they still work, the world hasn't changed, our technologies have, but Mother Nature and Creation is Complex, but it hasn't Changed". Self Care takes having enough Knowledge that you have enough Confidence to embrace the Natural Processes of our Physiology and going into it knowing fully well that you can Remise the conditions that are not good in Anatomical sights and within our Physiology. Just long enough to get the confidence of getting a Result.
Novelist and academic Ian Sansom steps into the history of wardrobes, to discover not only how and why we store clothes in large upright wooden boxes, but also why wardrobes feature so largely in fairy tales, memoirs and stories. From E. Nesbit's 'The Aunt and Anabel' to C.S Lewis's 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe', via Guy De Maupassant's tragic tale of a child in a wardrobe, Rimbaud's poem about a wardrobe with missing keys, and Roman Polanski's short film about two men who carry a wardrobe out of the sea; Ian explores the symbolism of wardrobes as a place where secrets are stored, imaginations inspired, consciences hidden, and our 'selves' reinvented.
MuggleNet Academia is a comprehensive insight into the literary thematic elements and scholastic endeavors that author J.K. Rowling has provided in her writings of the ‘Harry Potter’ series. We look through the entire ‘Harry Potter’ series for various elements in alchemy, literary components, composition attributes, as well as available classes at Universities and Colleges around the world, and various unique studies that are being implemented today. In this Lesson, we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the famous author, C.S. Lewis’ repose by celebrating his works with emphasis on the ‘Narnia’ series as it compares and contrasts to the ‘Harry Potter’ series. We discuss this lesson’s topic with noted Lewis scholar and Potter Pundit, Professor Elizabeth Baird-Hardy, and special student guest, Eric Scull. Thank you for listening.
