He's a well-known and much liked voice on Radio 4's Word of Mouth programme as well as Professor of Children's Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London. But Michael Rosen is this week's guest on Football Ruined My Life because he is a genuine Gooner - as visitors to the Emirates Stadium can see when they observe him depicted on the famous mural next to his late son Eddie and Gunnersaurus. First introduced to the game by his father, a fan from the Herbert Chapman glory days, Michael has been a fixture at Highbury and the Emirates since the 1950s and his reminiscences are conveyed in the podcast with his trademark humour and insight.
Schreibt uns gerne! Episode 5! Let's talk about branding, baby! This week, Martin leads an exceedingly open-ended discussion on the recent wave of clubs making aesthetic tweaks to storied badges. Ep.5's catalyst was the newly dubbed "Columbus Soccer Club", an MLS team that recently cemented its grassroots foundations through a community based movement, but suddenly pulled the carpet out from under themselves when they announced a bland, minimalist, new crest. C stands for which city again? The questions of the day start with why these moves have stirred such immense upheaval, why logos carry significance in the first place, and a foray into "identity" as one of the core elements that brings value to sport. The two also discuss a wide variety of rebranding successes and mishaps--most notably the recent Juve and Inter changes, but also including Sky Sports, Fox Sports, The Europa League, The Premier League, Cardiff City, and Leeds United. Surely enough, Will has plenty to add about the parallels to the NBA, invoking the similitude of badges in American basketball as a signal of unity, the role mascots play as tangible figures for what is otherwise intangible, and why some teams still haven't filed in line. The second half includes more soul searching, commencing with a revisitation of the identity question, the serendipity of allegiance selection, a dive into the virtue of uniqueness, a subsequent comparison to the homogeneity that the MLS appears to be pushing, a few comments on American Europeanization & Latinization, questions as to who these rebrands are actually for, and a final wrap up--following an entire episode of disapproval--trying to find genuine benefits that a rebrand can bring.Join us for the usual, irrelevant personal details regarding Martin's life, an erroneous historical comment about Gunnersaurus, Will's nostalgic back-of-the-bus talk, and Albuquerque's new MLS team.Find us on Twitter @touchlinetheoryFind Martin on Twitter @MG_theory, and Will @WA_theorySubscribe and send us your feedback!

Although it wasn’t pretty, Everton pull out a much needed victory at the Emirates against Arsenal for the first time ever. The 1-0 win puts Everton firmly in 8th, 6 points ahead of Arsenal with a match at hand, and right behind Liverpool and Spurs in the race for the Europa League. James and Ryan dissect the 1-0 victory starting with the tactical battle and Everton’s attempt to counter Mikel Arteta’s Pep-inspired high pressing 4231. We then walk through the action (or lack thereof), take a look at lister comments from social media, talk about Fabian Delph’s sock mishaps, and continue to express our support for Gunnersaurus. This Pitch Talk Special Feature segment focuses on Mesut Ozil and his situation with Arsenal FC. This week's What We All Want guest hosts are the Majestyk nightclub brawler Michael Duberry and the player who Sniffer Clarke reckoned was a natural goal scorer, Lurpak himself, Aiden Butterworth. The lads have a good old chat about not-so-cheap holidays in other people's misery and what NOT to do when you're on holiday in Greece with your little sister. A real public service announcement. They also give notice to all the idiots who said Patrick Bamford wasn't good enough for Premier League football and didn't pick him for their Fantasy Football Team. All you Toss Pots who picked Chris Wood, Nketyiah, Che Adams or Vydra instead. All 4 of them combined have only 5 points more than Paddy. There's also a serious question raised that needs answering. Has anyone seen Mesut Ozil and Gunnersaurus at the same time? Could the lads be right in believing its the same person!!!! It's all here along with your usual favourites of Rate Your Hate and Readers Letters, aptly selected and read for your pleasure by the WWAW Resident Reader. Who, by the way, is pushing for a 20-year old research assistant and thinks the Fuck-Up Jar should be contributing to her wages. Enjoy.
