Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball
The Miami Hurricanes have reportedly interviewed former Clemson offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter and Texas A&M tight ends coach James Coley for their open OC position. This was reported by David Lake of Inside The U, who reports Mario Cristobal is set to interview Houston OC Shannon Dawson this weekend. Houston's offense ranked inside the top 25 nationally in most categories last season. Per the Miami rivals site, former North Texas head coach Seth Littrell is another name to watch. Alex Donno breaks down these candidates and analyzes the fact that Mario Cristobal appears to be opening his search to some candidates with an air raid background. Littrell learned under Mark Leach while Dawson came up with Hal Mumme. Perhaps Cristobal is not limiting his options to those with a power spread philosophy. Donno shares the newest details on why linebackers coach Charlie Strong has decided to leave The U. Special guest Melissa aka Hoodie Girl joins the show! Melissa gives her take on the OC search and how she'd like to see it resolved. Melissa and Alex discuss Devin Hester being snubbed from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Melissa previews a big upcoming weekend of Canes basketball. Jim Larranaga's team will host Louisville on Saturday before heading to Chapel Hill for a Monday night showdown with North Carolina.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Jim Larranaga's team will host Louisville on Saturday before heading to Chapel Hill for a Monday night showdown with North Carolina. The Miami Hurricanes are reportedly interested in Miami Dolphins linebackers coach Anthony Campanile for their vacant defensive coordinator job. Coach Campanile has had success in the college ranks at Boston College and Ruters. He was very successful as defensive coordinator of New Jersey powerhouse high school Don Bosco Prep. Mario Cristobal was interested in Campinale for DC last year. This year, his situation might be different with the Dolphins since a new DC, Vic Fangio, is coming in. Campanile interviewed for the Dolphins DC job before Fangio was hired. Host Alex Donno and guest Larry Blustein discuss the Campinale possibility, but Blu makes the case for why the best decision might be to promote linebackers coach Charlie Strong to DC. The guys also discuss the offensive coordinator vacancy. Blu does not expect Jason Candle to leave his head coaching position at Toledo for the OC job at Miami. How important is it for Mario Cristobal to wrap up these searches quickly? Spring football practices start in just three weeks, on March 4th. Donno and Blu recap an incredible win by Miami basketball over the Duke Blue Devils. Jim Larranaga's Hurricanes pounded Duke 81-59, improving to 13-0 at home. The guys discuss quarterback recruits Air Noland, Michael Van Buren and Julian Sayin for the class of 2024.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. The Miami Hurricanes have lost defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to Alabama. He takes the same position under Nick Saban, who he has worked for in the past. Miami now has openings at both offensive and defensive coordinator with less than a month until the start of spring football. Will the Hurricanes promote linebacker coach Charlie Strong into the DC role or would they go outside the program to try and land someone like Charlie Partridge (Pitt DL/ assistant HC) or Jim Leonhard (former WISC DC)?Host Alex Donno discusses the DC opening and makes the case for promoting Strong while hopefully elevating either DeMarcus Van Dyke or Jason Taylor from analyst to on-field. Alex mentions that there is smoke that Saban also wants to hire Strong, so Miami might lose him if they don't promote him. Donno gives the latest on the offensive coordinator search, where he hears Toledo head coach Jason Candle has interviewed not only with Mario Cristobal but with athletic director Dan Radakovich. Candle might also be pursued by Notre Dame for their OC position. Alex reacts to the criticism of Miami's NIL by Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim. Boeheim accused Miami of “buying” their basketball team. Donno points out Boeheim having been punished in the recent past for “failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance.”Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes have a lot to prove on the field in 2022 if they want to match the hype they are receiving. Bringing in a coach like Mario Cristobal with big names like Charlie Strong, Josh Gattis and even pro football hall of famer Jason Taylor on staff, the expectations are through the room. Hurricanes players, who, along with coaches, spoke at Miami's media day on August 2nd, seem to be fully buying into their new training regimens.Host Alex Donno, who attended media day, answers a question from a listener about why fans should feel better this time around than they did the last handful of times Miami made a head coaching change. Donno believes that the newfound commitment and alignment from the university president's office and the athletic director make this go-around feel sustainable. It's one thing to change a head coach, but this time the changes go up way higher. Donno also relays some interesting information on the recruitment of 4-star Ft. Lauderdale Dillard running back Christopher Johnson. Johnson is deciding between Miami and Ole Miss, but wants to see Miami play some critical regular season games before he makes up his mind. Plus, can we expect 3-star IOL Connor Lew to commit to the Canes on Friday? Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball
Mike Farrell of MikeFarrellSports.com listed the Miami Hurricanes as one of 15 big college football programs that "aren't scary anymore." The list also includes Florida State, Florida, USC, Tennessee, Auburn, Penn State and Texas, among others. Bleacher Report considers Miami one of 7 major programs "on the rise" again after a recent lack of success.Host Alex Donno breaks down these assessments and agrees that it's totally fair to say Miami "isn't scary anymore." The program has been average or worse for the better part of the past 18 years. However, the moves and investments that Miami has made in coaches like Mario Cristobal, Josh Gattis, Charlie Strong, Jason Taylor etc, show that Miami is on track to become "scary" again real soon. Donno thinks USC will be the other program on the list to rise most quickly.Donno breaks down the incoming WR transfer of Colbie Young. He's a very tall 6-4 and caught 9 touchdowns in junior college last season. He has 3 years of eligibility left. Even though he hasn't been written about too much and doesn't have star rankings, he was sought after by other major programs like Tennessee, Florida State and Pittsburgh. With his height, Young can be a major factor in the red zone. Donno recaps the comments made by 4-star edge rusher Jayden Wayne after a great official visit. Donno also answers questions from Locked On Canes listeners about quarterback recruiting and on whether Miami football really needs their own stadium.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball
Will the linebacker position be a liability for the Miami Hurricanes football team in 2022? The Hurricanes got a great addition in Caleb Johnson, who arrived from UCLA in the transfer portal. Plus, true freshman Wesley Bissainthe from Miami Central should make a great impact in the long term. But do the Hurricanes have the consistent depth in the heart of their defense to show significant improvement in Mario Cristobal's first season?Host Alex Donno breaks down the new arrivals plus the outlook on returning linebackers like Chase Smith, Keontra Smith, Waynmon Steed, Gilbert Frierson, Corey Flagg, Ryan Ragone and Avery Huff. Miami had some bad luck with linebacker injuries in 2022 and the unit struggled with overall consistency. A huge question will be how much can improved coaching from LB coach Charlie Strong and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele impact this unit immediately? Donno feels that they can help significantly, especially when it comes to improving the tackling abilities from these players.Donno also reviews the annual head coach power rankings from the Sporting News, who list Mario Cristobal as #11 out of 131 in all of college football. Donno feels they have Cristobal in the right spot, but wonders if a few members of their top 10 belong there. When was the last time a Miami head coach deserved a top 11 overall ranking?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Miami Hurricanes are among the top 5 college football programs on their way "back to prominence" according to Mike Farrell of MikeFarrellSports.com. He ranks the Hurricanes number 2 behind the USC Trojans and just ahead of Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee. The Hurricanes last won a national championship in 2001 and have only appeared in a New Years 6 level bowl game once (2017) since 2003.Host Alex Donno discusses why the time is right for Miami to climb back up to the top of the mountain. Programs like Miami and USC are able to level the playing field due to NIL and the advantages that come from that area for teams in big cities like Los Angeles and Miami. On the field, the Hurricanes are seemingly in good hands for the upcoming years at quarterback and weak areas like offensive line and linebacker are going to be well coached and well developed under OL coach Alex Mirabal and LB coach Charlie Strong. Donno explains why it would be GREAT for college football to have private institutions like Miami and USC to get back into the national spotlight.Alex also discusses which true freshmen in the class of 2022 will have the biggest impact on the Canes in their first season. For us, it comes down to DE Cyrus Moss or LB Wesley Bissainthe, but don't sleep on TE Jaleel Skinner or RB Trevonte Citizen. We also discuss the possible best and worst case scenarios for the Canes in 2022.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball
Can the Miami Hurricanes football team debunk the cliche that "Rome wasn't built in a day?" While every fan hopes the Hurricanes can be a college football playoff type team in year one under Mario Cristobal, it's an unrealistic and unfair expectation. The transfer portal might accelerate things a bit, but historically it takes about 3 recruiting cycles for a new coaching regime to make their imprint on a football program. With excellent assistant coaches like offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and linebackers coach Charlie Strong on the staff (just to name a couple,) exactly how much can the Hurricanes improve from 2021 to 2022?Host Alex Donno tackles this question and more, as we detail the biggest "burning questions" for the Canes heading into the next football season. What will the offense look like under Josh Gattis? Can Miami create better balance between the run and the pass? The Hurricanes have a seemingly elite quarterback in Tyler Van Dyke, but can the young receivers be counted on? Can the running back room with standouts like Jaylen Knighton, Henry Parrish, Don Chaney and Thad Franklin create the same sort of success that Michigan's rushing offense had last year?Plus, Donno explains the difference between the NIL money from the Ruiz family versus NIL money from "collectives" in the simplest possible terms. And, Miami is hosting one of the top transfer receivers, Jaylon Robinson from UCF, in the coming days. What sort of impact can he have IF he picks Miami?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Legendary South Florida sports journalist Larry Blustein has been covering University of Miami football since 1971! Before any national championships and before "swagger," there was Blu. He joined the show to talk with host Alex Donno about Miami's recent success in the transfer portal. The guys take a deep dive on former UCLA linebacker Caleb Johnson, former West Virginia DL Akheem Mesidor and former USC DL Jacob Lichtenstein, who have all found their way to Coral Gables through the portal since Mario Cristobal's arrival at The U.Larry breaks down the impact these players can have, especially with Miami's improved defensive coaching from the likes of coordinator Kevin Steele, linebackers coach Charlie Strong and defensive backs coach Jahmile Addai.Larry also helps Donno predict where Miami will finish in the standings in 2022, but warns that fans need to exercise some patience despite all the excitement around the new coaching staff and upgrades to the facilities. Blu has been covering recruiting for 50 years, and describes how this current Miami Hurricanes coaching staff is already doing things differently from their predecessors.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. On another 'Keeping up with a Cane' Friday, 2-time national championship winning linebacker Darrin Smith recounts his amazing years playing linebacker for the Miami Hurricanes, where he won a pair of national championships in 1989 and 1991. He discussed the leadership and accountability present throughout the football team during that time.Darrin came in as a freshman with new Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and explained to host Alex Donno why Cristobal is the perfect coach to bring Miami back to prominence. Darrin explained what the recipe will be both on and off the field to get the Hurricanes competing with the big boys in the sport once again. He also explains why Charlie Strong was such an important hire as linebackers coach and discussed how much Miami's tackling can improve from one year to the next. The Hurricanes were the worst tackling team in major college football last season.Donno explains what upgrades could soon be coming to the University of Miami's practice facilities. The Miami Hurricanes wrapped up spring 2022 with a solid outing at their spring game on Saturday April 16th at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Head coach Mario Cristobal noted his appreciation afterwards for his team's physicality and hopes they can make it sustainable. The offensive line looked sharp and opened things up for running backs Henry Parrish, Thad Franklin and walk-on Devon Perry to have solid performances. On the defense, true freshman Cyrus Moss and transfer Jacob Lichteinstein looked powerful and disruptive.Host Alex Donno notes the various improvements he saw in Miami's physicality in all phases of the game and how Cristobal's superb coaching staff can continue that development. We also saw improved coverage from defensive backs like DJ Ivey, Te'Cory Couch, Avantae Williams, James Williams and Isaiah Dunson. Donno also wonders how high of a standard new coaches like linebackers coach Charlie Strong, DB's coach Jahmile Addae and defensive analyst Jason Taylor can create.Donno dives into the unofficial stats for the quarterbacks and running backs from the spring game. Tyler Van Dyke led the offense with authority and made plenty of plays despite notable drops from some of his top wide receivers. The running backs performed well despite Jaylen Knighton and Don Chainey both missing the game due to injury. Can Miami take this momentum from spring to fall and continue to raise the level of their football culture? Donno also takes a look at the wild saga of transfer portal OL Amarius Mims who sees his recruitment experience come full circle.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Miami Hurricanes 2022 spring game just wrapped up at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. You saw a who's who of coaches and VIP guests on the sidelines. Mario Cristobal's staff, including big names like linebackers coach Charlie Strong, OC Josh Gattis and defensive analyst Jason Taylor made quite the impression. Former Canes football studs like Bryant McKinnie and Antrel Rolle were interviewed during the ACC Network broadcast.Host Alex Donno reviewed the standout performances from quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, running backs Thad Franklin and Henry Parrish, safeties James Williams and Avantae Williams and defensive lineman Jacob Lichteinstein. They were among a handful of performers who really stood out on the day. The offensive line looked more physical than last season and the defense took good tackling angles overall.Donno went over the biggest negative on the day: the lack of execution from the wide receivers. Can they get in synch with their quarterbacks by the start of the 2022 season? One receiver did stand out in a positive way, though, and that was slot receiver Xavier Restrepo, who continued his positive form from spring practices.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Alex Donno examines the position groups and players who could be exploited as the Miami Hurricanes' biggest weaknesses in 2022. While there's a lot to be optimistic about with a good roster overall and a great looking coaching staff under Mario Cristobal, the roster he and his staff inherited appears flawed in certain areas. Donno takes a look at what parts of the offense could make it tough for QB Tyler Van Dyke to thrive, and what parts of the defense contributed to Miami's poor defensive stats in 2021.Plus, Donno reviews the feedback from Coach Cristobal after Miami's first scrimmage, where the defense won the day over Miami's offense. Under coaches like Cristobal, OC Josh Gattis, DC Kevin Steele, linebackers coach Charlie Strong and quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce, Miami is installing new schemes and hopefully a new identity.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
