What does it take to build a breakout non-alcoholic beverage brand in today's ultra-competitive drinks market? For George Youmans, co-founder and Chief Revenue Officer of Hiyo, it starts with a crystal-clear brand promise: a stress-relieving, mood-boosting sensation they call “the float.”In just three years, Hiyo has grown into a category leader, selling over 500,000 cases annually, with +212% year-over-year retail sales growth — making it the #1 contributor to growth in the functional-other beverage category, according to SPINS. With its USDA Organic formulation, a national rollout in 946 Target stores, and a recent minority investment from Constellation Brands, Hiyo is cementing its place as a top player in the fast-rising functional non-alc space. In this episode, George shares:How Hiyo went from a bootstrapped pandemic idea to tripling retail revenue last yearThe role of e-commerce in Hiyo's early success, including a 10X sales leap in year two and 3X in year threeWhy the “floaty feeling” — not just functional ingredients — became the emotional core of the brandHow the team leverages its 500K+ DTC customer base to drive velocity at retail with targeted geo campaignsWhy Hiyo prioritizes rate of sale over door count, aiming for sustainable growth over splashy expansionHow packaging design — based on Californian sunset palettes — became a brand differentiatorThe importance of staying operationally lean while growing fast — and what George learned from early forecasting mistakesHow event partnerships with EDC, HARD Summer, and Breakaway Music Festival support liquid-to-lips trial with over 300,000 festivalgoersWhy George believes Hiyo can be for hard seltzers and RTDs what Athletic Brewing is for beerLast Call: On Last Call, we dive into a new per-capita wine consumption map from Visual Capitalist and the NIAAA — and what it reveals about:Why wine consumption is lowest in the Midwest and SouthHow D.C. became the nation's most wine-loving "state"The surprising disconnect between income, control states, and wine salesWhy tasting room visitation may be dropping in California — but rising in states like Michigan and VirginiaDon't miss our next episode, dropping on June 4.For the latest updates, follow us:Business of Drinks:YouTubeLinkedInInstagram @bizofdrinksErica Duecy, co-host: Erica Duecy is founder and co-host of Business of Drinks and one of the drinks industry's most accomplished digital and content strategists. Hailing from The City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia's expansive music scene brought ZíA to where she is now. Born into a Russian family with a love for classic rock, blues, and jazz albums, ZíA was often found singing along and discovering her favorite sounds. Punk, alternative and metal tunes put her ear to the ground and sparked her passion for music. From the moment she came across Excision and Skrillex's diverse catalogues, she knew she was hooked. ZíA delved deeper and deeper into the bass music community, finding artists such as Skream, Benga, Caspa, Rusko, Joker, Liquid Stranger, Zeds Dead and Ganja White Night. They were constantly in her headphones, and unbeknownst to her, shaping her future sound. ZíA's passion for music motivated her to become more involved. She began working behind the scenes in the industry, and was lovingly nicknamed “tour mom.” Such proximity to the chaos of the spotlight inspired ZíA to tap into her creative side. She jumped in head first and hasn't looked back since. In 2018, ZíA stepped behind the decks at Camp Bisco. She spent the summer smashing renegade sets and steadily winning over hearts with her signature dark and dynamic mixing. ZíA was happy to accompany Subtronics and Blunts & Blondes on their Up in Smoke tour, consistently saturating the crowd with wobbles and wubs. Her ultimate goal as an artist is to resonate with her fans and move them on the same level music has shaped her. ZíA has played prestigious festivals such as Electric Forest, Lost Lands, Moonrise, Hard Summer, Okeechobee and more, and has released music on major labels such as Bassrush and Deadbeats. We had the pleasure of interviewing Black Caviar over Zoom video! NYC duo Black Caviar deliver a new single “Been That Ill” feat. NYC rapper G.L.A.M. “Been That Ill” is Black Caviar’s fourth collaborative single with G.L.A.M., following 2018’s “Killa Shit Funk” and 2019’s double single release on Dim Mak Records with “Alright Alright Okay” & “Zonin.” Leading the single with G.LA.M.’s impressive vocal delivery, she lays down a high-energy flow on “Been That Ill,” which is perfectly met with stunning production from Black Caviar. Heavily inspired by New Orleans bounce music fused with playful dance elements, “Been That Ill” has all the necessary ingredients to make waves on the club and festival circuit this summer. “Been That Ill” comes weeks after Black Caviar’s new single “On My Own Masters,'' with the latter track heating up on Spotify playlists worldwide including Dance Rising, Operator, omw, and Friday Cratediggers. Both singles will be part of Black Caviar’s forthcoming EP set to debut soon. Nacolbie Jane p/k/a G.L.A.M is a DJ, producer, songwriter and rapper from the West Coast. A child of music. She was born to legendary Oakland emcee parents, Dangerous Dame (Platinum writer for Too $hort) and her dedicated mother, Platinum selling recording artist, Nic Nac. She is the arrival of a new kind of triple threat that signifies that a change has inevitably come to the music game. Widely recognized for their hit singles “Coco” (over 20 million global streams) and Grammy-nominated track “What’s Up Danger” from the Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse soundtrack (over 150 million global streams) Black Caviar have continuously released show-stopping music and have earned over 200 million Spotify streams on their catalogue. In addition to the commercial success of “What’s Up Danger”, the NYC duo released four singles with Republic/Casablanca Records, and produced a hit remix on the soundtrack of the 2019 reboot of Charlie’s Angels. Recently, Black Caviar penned a three single deal with Big Beat records and released the first of these with Do The Damn Thing in November of 2020. Curating remixes for the likes of Lizzo, Tiesto, Jason Derulo, Foster The People & Louis The Child and many more, Black Caviar have also shared the stage with A-list talent at major festivals including Hard Summer, EDC Orlando, Hangout Festival, and Electric Zoo. Scoring sync deals with Apple, McDonald's, and Netflix, Black Caviar have also secured DJ residencies in Boston with Big Night Entertainment Group. #41 - PennyWild: An Artist's Guilt

MichaelKushner

“It's not going to be perfect, but nothing is perfect. The hardest thing about making music is finishing music.” How does the multi-hyphenate differ from coast to coast? On this episode of Dear Multi-Hyphenate, dj-choreographer-producer-performer, wasn't originally drawn to the word multi-hyphenate or “Renaissance Woman”. But in 2021, Penny Wildman, who also goes by PENNYWILD, resonates with the phrase as she no longer waits for permission to tackle her avenues.  Are we in a new era of Artist's Guilt and has it flipped on its head? Where an Artist's Guilt is usually born out of an artist feeling they aren't creating enough… in a response to a pandemic, is it the guilt now is a response to creating too much, especially in a world where so many people are less inspired to create.  PennyWild is always finding the balance in, you guessed it, social media - especially TikTok. The app can change lives, but is the Russian Roulette gamble worth it? What does growth actually look like and how can we get from point A to point B. Like PennyWild says, sometimes we are just flying by the seat of our pants. Sometimes it just takes ONE moment to hit us in the “pleasure center” to disenroll from our college courses and switch gears. People may think it's weird, but when we find paths for artistic opportunities - it can create a beautiful orb of work. It may not make sense on paper, but it's a beautiful thing. “Nothing in life is black and white. It's all very nuanced. It's all very complicated and that really checks out with this year.” Penny Wildman is a Music Producer, DJ, Director, and Choreographer living in Los Angeles by way of New York City. She has choreographed/directed for the likes of Zedd, Rich The Kid, Laidback Luke, Enrique Iglesias, Marian Hill, Weird Al, Gucci Mane, amongst others. LP Giobbi (like the Italian... gee-oh-bee) is a "producer-DJ-music director-synth warrior goddess born in Oregon and based in LA". She's also our guest on Episode 13 of Sisu Presents: In the Key of She! 13 is a number traditionally associated with feminine power and energy and OMG that sums LP! This show is one of the most fun and uplifting shows we've produced - bassy, jazzy, piano house and an incredible "tits out" enthusiasm for life (her words, but now mine!!) When she's not collaborating or touring with the likes of Sofi Tukker, Jax Jones, Hotel Garuda or Autograf, she's co-founding burgeoning publishing companies and touring parties (Animal Talk Collective), heading up a thriving non-profit organization to address the lack of representation and equity in electronic music (FEMMEHOUSE), acting as North American Music Director for W Hotels, and running her namesake apparel business (GIOBBI). In 2019 alone, she performed breakthrough sets at some of the biggest festival stages in the US, including Moogfest, HARD Summer and Coachella—DJMag even named her track “Amber Rose” as one of its 20 massive tracks at this year's festival. She's been co-signed by some of music biggest names and brands, providing mixes to Diplo's Revolution on SiriusXM, collaborating with ROLI and Native Instruments, and partnering with brands like Moog, Guitar Center, and Roland Tracks played during the interview: Perfect Fire: Lpgiobbi – Perfect-fire Amber Rose: Lpgiobbi – Amber-rose Dejala Pasar Lpgiobbi – Dejala-pasar-feat-within-radio-edit Ready to Go: Lpgiobbi – Ready-to-go Jungle Queen: Lpgiobbi – Jungle-queen-feat-tt-the-artist @lpgiobbi beatport.com/artist/lp-giobbi/699908 www.lpgiobbi.com @moog @sirusxm

DJ BIO: You can never be completely sure what you’re in for when you see Subset perform - even he isn’t too certain what to expect. Honing his craft in the demanding and eclectic New York City scene, Mark has put down roots in Seattle's thriving world of dance music. He has spent the last 10 years soaking up the musical variety from his experiences to develop his unique and versatile sound. Links: Subset & The Instigators: https://www.facebook.com/groups/instigatorsmountup/ Field Trip: https://www.facebook.com/thatfieldtrip Noise Complaint: https://www.facebook.com/noisecomplaintsea From his weekly and monthly parties to his renegade sets at festivals around the country to massive sets at Holy Ship!, EDC Vegas, HARD Summer, and Burning Man, Subset knows just what to play to set the perfect tone, no matter the setting. Mark has also focused on ingraining himself in the communities he visits, finding every opportunity to promote positive and personal growth. BASSment Saturdays, the legendary bass music weekly Subset hosted and curated at Webster Hall, became a home and a family for electronic music fans all around the Northeast. Some traveled hours to be there every week, not necessarily for the headliners, but for the family and vibes that inhabited that space. Subset has also been an integral member of the Holy Ship! community known as Shipfam. For years, he has thrown countless preparties, afterparties, renegade sets, and meetups. In 2015, HARD recognized his aptitude for curation and event planning, and invited him to curate a stage at all Holy Ship! official preparties. In 2016, HARD recognized the demand that he had built over the last four years and gave him sets on both Holy Ships. In 2018, Subset hosted his own stage on Holy Ship, along with a coveted set on a private island in the Bahamas. 2019 will see Subset bringing his brand Noise Complaint to Holy Ship, along with a massive new project called Subset & The Instigators. Mark continues to broaden his horizons while building a platform for positivity and gratitude oriented at giving back to the community. From hosting an art car at EDC, instigating silliness at Dirtybird Campout, and curating a weekly at Q Nightclub called Field Trip, Subset continues to create experiences around the world.

I'm A House Gangster presents The Gangstercast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2015 123:12

Gangstercast 56 comes from Brillstein. Mike Brillstein, known to many as Thee Mike B, has been a kingpin in the LA club scene since the late 90s, and over a decade later his respect for the underground and others’ respect for him has not dwindled. Having worked with names like Jesse Rose, Switch, Diplo, and Oliver, it’s no surprise that Mike has a deep understanding of house and the underground. The recent success of his work with Jesse Rose on “Shuffle The Paper” and “Good Wife” solidified Mike’s place in the underground house world, and with that, Brillstein was born. To draw a line in the sand between Thee Mike B and Brillstein was something that allowed a sense of artistic freedom from both sides: Thee Mike B as one of Los Angeles’ best DJs and Brillstein as a producer who got his chops in chunky productions on the Play It Down imprint from Jesse Rose. Brillstein has recently received radio play support from Skream on his residency show. He has also played at Hard Summer last year alongside the likes of Axwell, Martinez Brothers, Dusky, and Josh Wink. We asked Brillstein How this mix represents him as an artist, to which he explained; “Everything I do as Brillstein is a tribute to the House Music that first spoke to me in the mid 90s: Daft Punk, DJ Sneak, Armand Van Helden, Roger S, Junior Sanchez, Paul Johnson, Roy Davis Jr, Cajmere, Pepe Braddock… It’s a long list. This stuff was not meant for fashion shows and hair salons. It was funky, bassy, loopy tracks. Not unlike hip-hop, so it spoke to my sensebilities. I’m capturing that classic flavor while putting my own modern, even post-modern touch on it. Basically, old school vibes without sounding dated. There’s lots of classics in there sitting comfortably besides the brand new stuff.” Asking Brillstein what the House Gangster movement means to him, he replies; “I think House Gangster is the perfect name for Sneak’s label. Because it describes everything that drew me to his sounds. It’s house music. But the beats, samples, vibes, all of it just has that head nodding, blunted, funky vibe. Whether you're in the cold city streets or in Ibiza, a House Gangster can create that feeling. And it always hits you in the chest no matter where you’re at… Cuz it’s GANGSTA!” Brillstein describes the House Gangster sound as “Dope, banging, funky tracks for the green bush smokers, girls wearing chokers, bling bling playaz and exotic dancers … It’s that funky rhythm, that they can’t control. That perfect House Music vibe.” We asked him ‘What does House music mean to you?’ to which he replied; “Dancing until you’re falling asleep in the club. The vibes, the family, the warehouse. If you get it… you can't escape it.”  Telling us how he chose the tracks for this mix, Brillstein says; “Initially I wanted to recreate my NYE set that wasn’t recorded. So I tried to remember as much as I could from that, in addition to showcasing some new material (a few unreleased ones in there) and also dropping lots of other favourites both new and old.” Finally, Brillstein gives a little special mention about this mix; “I had just got back from a night out with Junior Sanchez and Todd Terry, they were playing at Avalon in Hollywood. I had so much fun and was inspired. I was scrolling twitter at 6am LA time, when I saw Sneak tweeting about checking out the latest Gangstercasts. Since the inception of the series I’ve followed it closely and had been waiting patiently for my invite. I was feeling bold so I tweeted at Sneak “When’s my turn?” He replied “make one man” or something like that. Never being one to back down from a dare, I replied, “I’ll make it right now live, you’ll have it in 2 hours as proof.” So I recorded it live in my studio in one take, while my homegirl Ashley was nice enough to dance and hang out and cheer me on. Then I uploaded the file to Sneak 2 hours later without even listening back! Now that’s House Gangster!”

ZDS https://www.facebook.com/zombiedisco Barely into his 30s, ZDS - aka London DJ and producer Nat Self - may not yet have the weathered features of a house music elder statesman but his musical CV already reads that way. Leading light in, and most successful export of, East London's post-millennial club scene, check. Resident of Panorama Bar when it was just a twinkle in most techno tourist's eyes, check. Collaborator with Chicago booty bass don DJ Funk and UK soul legend Omar on last year's rocking debut album 'Brains' (released by Made to Play), check. Festival slots everywhere from LA’s HARD Summer to Ukraine super festival Kazantip, check, check, check. It's no puzzle then why Classic Records, brainchild of definite house elder statesmen Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter, chose him to mix and re-edit their back catalogue for the bumping jackathon that was 'Classic Through the Eyes of: Zombie Disco Squad' (Nat's previous moniker) released to critical acclaim earlier this year. With huge recent hits for the likes of Suara and Hive Audio, ZDS now returns to dirtybird, the San Fran crew he's repped for since 2009. Slipping effortlessly from the wonked out ‘Hands’ to the low and dirty ‘Drop’, via the Teutonic techno train of ‘Bang Ze Box’, ZDS isn't just ticking all the right boxes… he's banging them too.
