Laura DeKraker Lang-Ree, Gen X, is a cancer mom and advocate for parents of children with cancer. She empowers families going through medical trauma with tools and tactics to help them navigate their new everyday normal. Her book, Thru the Fire, Empowering Parents of Kids with Cancer takes us through her journey once the pediatrician said her 3-year-old daughter Cecilia's lethargy and black circles under her eyes were childhood leukemia. She entered the panickedexistence of childhood cancer. Ceal had an 85 percent chance of surviving – that is, IF she made it through 2½ years of grueling treatment. Meaning Ceal had a 15 percent chance of dying. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Emotions experienced during crisis“Positude” Advocacy InsightsHealth care beliefsResilienceAsking for helpGratitudeBoundary SettingQuotable Moments: “Cancer is not an in and out kind of experience. It hangs around a long time, like years.” “I think advocacy is one of the most underrated things in the whole health care system that we can imagine.” “Health care professionals want us to advocate because it helps them help us.” “Advocacy is key to the care of our child and ourselves.” *You just need to understand she's never going to do math or science.” “There has to be another way!”“An important piece of advocacy is to level the playing field with knowledge.” “Health care professionals need us and want us to be a part of the medical team.” “Surrending and accepting is not giving up, it's actually giving you power.” “Have you considered she's the hope?” Three Episode Takeaways: 1.    Cancer is an all-hands on deck kind of journey. Laura has included chapters in her book specific to parents, friends, family (grandparents), and caregivers. 2.    “Positude” is Cecilia's word that can help allof us. It means to have a positive attitude when we're facing things head-on like she did. It is up to us to change our narrative so we can manage and have agency because we've advocated for ourselves. Things go a lot more smoothly.3.   Giving our kids the tools to advocate for themselves can help everyone manage and create a calmer atmosphere. The aim of Laura's book is to give you the tools to ask thequestions so you can then make choices.  More About Laura:Laura is an editor and consultant with Stanford Children'sHospital and a writer, educator, and editor for parent publications at the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Jacob's Heart Family Cancer Center, and Bass Center for ChildhoodCancer and Blood Diseases. Are teachers keeping up with their pupils when it comes to AI in the classroom? A recent survey in the United States showed that more than 70% of students report using AI for their school assignments, even in the face of institutional restrictions on tools like ChatGPT. This finding comes from a study conducted by The Harker School, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. The data shows that pupils are engaging with these LLMs more often than adults, suggesting that younger users are adapting to AI technologies quicker. But that begs the question are educators keeping pace with these developments? In a special edition about AI and the future of education Gareth and Ghislaine are joined by Mutlu Cukurova, a Professor of Learning and Artificial Intelligence at University College London. We also hear more tech for Good from CES in Las Vegas. The BeeKee Box is a classroom in a box that can be used where there is no connectivity. The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell and the studio expert is Ghislaine Boddington. Twenty-one years later, her daughter is grown and healthy and it's time to give back through Positude, Empowering Parents of Kids with Cancer, launching on Instagram 1/6/21 @PositudeLiving. She's been happily down the rabbit hole researching content and writing a book filled with much needed advice and help for parents and families with children afflicted by cancer. She adores her high school sweetheart husband, their incredible three daughters, and can't think of anything better in life than hanging out with her family underwater. Nearly 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer annually and support for those parents, a guidebook for navigating treatment, remains sorely missing. In today's episode we discuss: —Understanding the Pathology: Physicians from Pisa University Hospital (Italy) remark on Zhao et al's (2020) findings on ABO Blood Group Correlations With COVID-19, stating that their observed association between blood group A and increased risk of COVID-19 may be due to their choice in cohort. In the authors' own study of a group of 7,713 healthy blood donors, there was no significant difference in rate of anti-SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid IgG based on blood type and there are other studies with similar findings. While this study does not eliminate the need to examine differential rates of infection and outcomes for COVID-19 patients based on blood type, it does indicate that previous study results may be biased by group selection. —Transmission & Prevention: Vaccines that present the α-gal epitope produced by glycoengineered bacteria or yeast had increased uptake by antigen presenting cells (APCs) by 10 to 200 fold when given to mice. Since anti-Gal is a natural immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the human serum, authors state that vaccines with the α-gal epitope may increase anti-viral immune response of T cells against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Authors suggest the development of vaccines with α-gal epitopes have been shown to be safe for use in humans through clinical trials and could offer improved efficacy via maximized immune response to SARS-CoV-2. —Resources: A data-driven, ontology-based, and natural language processing approach for analyzing COVID-19 clinical trials was developed by a high school student from The Harker School in San Jose, California who data mined ClinicalTrials.gov using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to compile relevant data from COVID-19 clinical trials including drug treatments and interventions, outcomes, Medical Subject Heading (MeSH), and Human Phenotype Ontologies (HPO). The results (available at http://covidresearchtrials.com) provide a public compilation of unique reports in each category analyzed, which could offer guidance to the global research community to support the development of future clinical trials, treatments and interventions, and meta-analyses, as well as general insight into the response to COVID-19. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/covid19lst/support
