Somewhere between the feedback, the frustration, and the fifth Slack ping, most leaders stop being intentional. EPISODE SUMMARY In this episode of the Joyosity™ Podcast, Jenn Whitmer is back with Michael Whitmer for part two of this ICYMI conversation, pulling together the most practical leadership lessons from the Joyosity in Practice series. This one is all about the “now what?”—how leaders stay human in the everyday moments that quietly shape trust, culture, and performance. Together, Jenn and Michael talk through what it looks like to practice joy in real time: tracking what's working, listening better, lowering the pressure of perfection, giving feedback that actually helps, and using small pauses to lead with more intention. Here's What's in the Episode: [05:50] Why joy is not fluffy or extra—and the 3 signals that tell you it's actually present. [07:19] How a “smile file” or glimmer list can help you notice progress, impact, and meaning. [11:34] Why leaders need qualitative measures too—not just metrics and KPIs. [14:27] Why listening is not just a soft skill, but part of your technical leadership skill. [17:01] How leadership is usually shaped in small moments, not big dramatic ones. [19:52] Why calling something an experiment can reduce pressure and improve learning. [21:48] How “minimum viable magic” helps you move forward without waiting for perfection. [24:12] Why the feedback sandwich is terrible and what to do instead. [29:05] How to pause before reacting—and use “four corner calm breathing” to stay in charge of your emotions. Jenn and Michael make the case that leadership does not rise or fall in big public moments nearly as much as it does in small private ones. The real work happens in the pause before you reply, the way you frame feedback, the questions you ask when something is unclear, and whether you choose curiosity instead of control. Joyosity is not about pretending things are fine. It is about building the kind of rooted, resilient leadership that helps people feel connected, effective, and human. Key Takeaway The leaders who stay human under pressure are not waiting for perfect conditions—they are practicing small, intentional choices that create trust, clarity, and joy in real time. What do leaders do when they know better… and still spiral anyway? EPISODE SUMMARY In this ICYMI episode of the Joyosity™ Podcast, Jenn Whitmer is joined by Michael Whitmer for a candid debrief on the Joyosity in Practice: How Leaders Stay Human When It Matters Most series. After Jenn shares a painfully relatable SXSW moment of self-doubt, she and Michael unpack what stood out from the season's guests: conflict avoidance, feedback, pressure, creativity, self-awareness, and the leadership habits that help people stay grounded when things get hard. This conversation is part reflection, part leadership audit. If you've ever rushed past discomfort, avoided a hard conversation, taken feedback too personally, or forgotten that being human is not a leadership flaw, this episode will feel like a reset. Jenn and Michael connect the dots from the full series and pull out the ideas leaders most need to hear again—because repetition is a mercy, and leadership is not a position. It's a practice. Here's What's in the Episode: [2:20] How joy helps leaders stay connected to who they are when pressure rises [7:56] Why conflict avoidance feels safer in the moment but usually costs more later [8:22] Why showing your humanity can actually help other people relax and do better work [11:38] How curiosity can make feedback more useful and less defensive [15:08] What leaders miss when they expect people to produce without enough space to think [19:33] Why urgency can quietly sabotage thoughtful leadership [25:47] How better meetings start with clarity about what kind of meeting it actually is This episode is a reminder that joy is not denial, polish, or pretending. It is a practice of staying connected to yourself and other people so you can lead with more clarity, courage, and humanity. Key Takeaway Leadership does not break in one big moment—it is built or betrayed in the small, human choices you make under pressure. Great leadership is not about being louder or being first. It is about seeing what other people miss. EPISODE SUMMARY So many leaders say they want creativity—but secretly punish it the moment it looks inefficient, awkward, or unfinished. In this episode of the Joyosity™ Podcast, Jenn Whitmer talks with bestselling author, keynote speaker, and Non-Obvious Company founder Rohit Bhargava about what leaders need when everything feels loud, urgent, and crowded with bad advice. Together, they unpack how to think more strategically, how to build thought leadership without copying someone else's formula, how to give better feedback, and why delegation feels slower at first but is essential for long-term leadership. If you care about leadership development, strategic thinking, communication, innovation, burnout prevention, or building a stronger point of view at work, this conversation is packed with practical insight. Here's What's in the Episode: [03:12] Why “happy accidents” are not a leadership strategy—and why intentional, strategic decisions matter more. [10:47] What thought leadership actually is, and how to choose the right format based on your strengths instead of forcing yourself into someone else's model. [13:19] Why having a clear point of view may turn some people away—and why that is often a good thing for leaders and teams. [16:03] How unclear leadership creates silent misalignment, drains productivity, and steals joy from teams. [26:34] A simple way to give better feedback. [33:18] Why delegation is not actually about speed in the moment. Jenn Whitmer talks with Rohit Bhargava about leadership clarity, thought leadership, delegation, and feedback—especially for leaders navigating uncertainty, team misalignment, and constant noise. They explore how to make strategic decisions instead of relying on “happy accidents,” how to develop a clear point of view at work, how to delegate in ways that build team autonomy, and how to give better feedback without crushing people. If you've been searching for help with strategic leadership, clear communication, delegation, team alignment, or thought leadership, this conversation offers practical insight for leading with more intention and less reaction. Key Takeaway Great leaders do not chase noise, copy formulas, or wait for lucky breaks. They build clarity on purpose, trust their point of view, and create space for others to grow. About the Guest: Rohit Bhargava Rohit Bhargava is an expert in marketing, innovation, trends and the future. From the authors of Future Normal comes this clever, lightly satirical glossary of terms that don't exist yet — but probably should. Each invented entry captures a subtle shift in how we live, work, love, and occasionally pretend to understand what's going on. Some of these words will make you laugh. POV: the world is on fire—and everyone is looking at you to stay calm. Leadership falls apart before the crisis in the quiet moments of fear, pressure, and unchecked emotion. The crisis just reveals it all. EPISODE SUMMARY What happens when leaders confuse urgency with importance and control with strength? In this grounding, no-fluff conversation, Jenn Whitmer sits down with Ken Miller to talk about what actually helps leaders stay steady when the pressure is high. Drawing from Ken's lived experience—from incarceration to entrepreneurship to boardrooms—this episode reframes emotional regulation, decision-making, and leadership presence. This is not about optimism or pretending things are fine. It's about gap control, emotional awareness, and leading from clarity instead of fear. If you've ever felt the pull to react fast, clamp down, or hide emotion “to be professional,” this episode will challenge—and steady—you. Here's What's in the Episode: [01:10] Why joy is not optimism, denial, or a reward for getting everything right [07:12] The biggest thing leaders misunderstand in high-pressure situations: EMOTIONS [08:53] Gap control: expanding the space between stimulus and response so leaders act and not react [11:56] Ken's mic drop for leaders: “If you forget emotions, you will be controlled by them.” [16:09] A real leadership failure and the moment control started costing trust [19:02] Why checklist leadership feels safe but quietly limits humanity and innovation [29:45] “I'm good with good.” What it actually means to be well as a leader Leaders searching for how to stay calm under pressure, emotional intelligence in leadership, decision-making in high-stress situations, leading through uncertainty, and how to manage emotions at work will find this episode especially relevant. Jenn Whitmer and Ken Miller explore why fear-based leadership leads to reactive decisions, how gap control helps leaders respond with clarity instead of urgency, and why compassion, self-awareness, and perspective are not soft skills—but strategic ones. This conversation is particularly valuable for executives, managers, and business owners navigating burnout, team tension, or high-stakes leadership moments who want to lead with steadiness without sacrificing humanity. Key Takeaway Joy in leadership doesn't come from reacting faster. You need to create enough space to respond with clarity, compassion, and courage. About the Guest: Ken Miller Ken Miller is a speaker, coach, and author whose life story reflects the power of resilience, accountability, and intentional growth. Raised in a home marked by both love and trauma, Ken excelled academically early on, becoming a National Merit Scholar and graduating from an Ivy League university—clear signs of his potential. But addiction and a series of destructive choices led him into homelessness, incarceration, and profound personal loss. Hitting rock bottom forced Ken to make a defining decision: to rebuild his life through small, consistent, intentional choices. Released from prison with little more than determination, Ken committed himself to change. That commitment transformed his life and career, leading him to become a successful entrepreneur, mentor, and respected leadership voice. Today, Ken shares his story with organizations, schools, and leaders across the country, offering a powerful message: your past does not define your future—and it's never too late to choose differently. Collaboration doesn't fail because people are "difficult." It's because we confuse control with leadership. If you've ever left a collaboration thinking “Why was that so hard?”—this episode is for you. EPISODE SUMMARY Everyone says they value collaboration. Few leaders actually know how to practice it when the pressure is real. In this episode, Jenn sits down with Catherine Casalino, a veteran book cover designer and art director who has spent decades co-creating with authors, editors, and publishers—often under tight deadlines, high expectations, and very strong opinions. This conversation isn't about design. It's about how leaders create conditions where collaboration can actually work—without micromanaging, steamrolling, or disappearing into people-pleasing. Catherine shares what she listens for when collaboration is about to struggle, why iteration is a leadership skill (not a failure), and how joy shows up in the quiet, high-stakes moments where leaders are tempted to control. If you lead people, projects, or cross-functional work, this episode will change how you approach collaboration—starting now. Here's What's in the Episode: [00:05] Why most collaboration breaks down in the quiet, pressured moments, not the big blowups. 02:16] The hidden leadership skill at the center of joyful collaboration: shared ownership. [6:49] Why listening is a people-power skill, not a “soft skill." [17:10] Early warning signs that a collaboration is going to struggle and how to respond without ego. [29:45] Why the first draft is never the goal and why leaders need to normalize iteration. [30:16] “The only job of the first draft is to exist” and what that teaches us about leadership [43:51] How joy becomes viral in teams when leaders are willing to examine themselves first Leaders searching for how to improve collaboration at work, collaborative leadership skills, how to lead creative teams, or how to collaborate without micromanaging will find practical insight in this episode of the Joyosity Podcast. Through a real-world conversation on collaboration, leadership, communication, and trust, Jenn Whitmer and Catherine Casalino explore what makes collaboration succeed—or quietly fall apart—especially under pressure. This episode is especially relevant for leaders navigating cross-functional teams, creative collaboration, feedback challenges, people-pleasing tendencies, and control-driven leadership habits, offering a grounded, human approach to building joyful, effective collaboration that actually works. Key Takeaway Collaboration doesn't require "let's just get together." It requires braver leaders that make room for evolution, listening, and shared ownership. What if the thing that's making leadership feel so heavy isn't the pressure but the pretending? EPISODE SUMMARY What happens when leadership rewards performance—but quietly erodes the person underneath it? In this episode of Joyosity in Practice, Jenn Whitmer sits down with Australian employment lawyer and leadership coach Karen Ansen for a powerful conversation about presence, power, conflict, and what it really costs leaders when they disconnect from themselves in the name of professionalism. Karen brings decades of experience working with leaders in high-stakes, emotionally charged environments—law, HR, and organizational conflict—and names what many leaders feel but rarely say out loud: avoiding discomfort doesn't create peace; it creates problems. Together, Jenn and Karen explore why presence is not a “nice-to-have,” how healthy conflict actually builds trust, and why curiosity—not control—is one of the most underrated leadership skills. This episode is for leaders who are tired of performing strength and ready to practice it. Here's What's in the Episode: [01:15] How leadership erosion happens quietly and why self-abandonment is a hidden leadership risk. [06:24] Why “professionalism” often blocks leadership presence and emotional intelligence at work. [10:45] Big personalities in leadership: why confidence in women leaders is misread as a problem. [15:12] The cost of avoiding self-awareness, mindfulness, and emotional presence in leadership. [20:59] People management and leadership stress: why leading humans is the hardest leadership skill. [23:33] Letting go of control in leadership: how outcome detachment improves communication and trust. [30:06] Conflict management for leaders: a practical framework for difficult conversations without avoidance or escalation. Leaders searching for leadership presence, emotional intelligence at work, and conflict management skills often assume they need better scripts, stronger authority, or tighter control. This episode challenges that assumption—exploring how self-awareness in leadership, mindfulness at work, and staying present during difficult conversations actually build trust, reduce defensiveness, and improve team communication You'll hear practical insights on managing people under pressure, leading through conflict, and how letting go of control can make you a more effective, human leader—without sacrificing credibility or results. Key Takeaway Joy at work isn't about shunning discomfort quickly—it's about staying present long enough to learn from it. You don't lose your humanity overnight as a leader. You trade it away one “this is just how it has to be” moment at a time. EPISODE SUMMARY Leadership pressure has a way of quietly narrowing us—our choices, our curiosity, and eventually, our humanity. In this conversation, Jenn sits down with Heather Campbell to unpack what actually helps leaders stay grounded, present, and human when the stakes are high and the margin for error feels thin. This episode isn't about coping harder or pushing through with a smile. It's about noticing the subtle moments where leaders disconnect from themselves—and learning how to interrupt that pattern before it costs trust, clarity, and culture. Jenn Whitmer talks with Heather Campbell, who brings deep insight, lived experience, and practical wisdom for leaders navigating complexity without losing themselves in the process. Here's What's in the Episode: [09:52] Why the most powerful leadership shifts begin as an invitation, not a mandate. [14:22] Why “being professional” often becomes a cover for emotional disconnection. [26:16] How high-capacity leaders unintentionally train themselves out of curiosity. [31:59] What actually restores trust when leaders feel stretched, scrutinized, or stuck. [23:38] A practical reframe for staying human without oversharing or collapsing boundaries. Key Takeaway Staying human isn't about lowering standards—it's about widening awareness. Leaders who remain curious under pressure make better decisions and create cultures people want to stay in. All work and no play doesn't make you dull—it makes you dangerous. When was the last time you truly played? Not performed, produced, or achieved—but actually played. You can't lead with resilience if your joy reservoir is empty. Your leadership depends on one thing most leaders forget to refill — your joy reservoir. This episode of The Joyosity™ Podcast dives into the essential truth that sustainable leadership isn't about endless hustle — it's about refilling your joy. Jenn Whitmer unpacks why motivation and willpower alone will eventually fail, how stress chemicals keep leaders depleted, and the three daily practices that protect and restore your energy: space, safety, and support. What if your checklist is killing connection? You can show intentional appreciation without making people feel like a task. This month on the Joyosity™ Podcast, we've been getting cozy with gratitude. Far beyond the generic “thanks!” you reflexively say cause you were raised with manners. We're talking personalized, purposeful, and strategic appreciation that actually fuels connection and trust at work (and home). In this In Case You Missed It episode, Jenn Whitmer and producer Shelby Merryweather reflect on May's big takeaways — from Enneagram-savvy thank-yous to the surprisingly soulful power of systems. Here's what you'll walk away with: The subtle (but powerful) difference between thankfulness and gratitude — and why only one builds trust. How to give appreciation that's specific to someone's Enneagram style (spoiler: praise what you want to produce). Why “operationalizing your values” (yes, even gratitude) creates more joy and less burnout. And again Shelby brings the question every leader should ask around 16 minutes in.

Gratitude isn't just a warm fuzzy feeling — it's a leadership superpower. But most of us are doing it wrong… or at least, doing it on autopilot. Ready to learn how real gratitude can transform your team, your culture, and your own leadership mindset? Let's dive in. In this episode of The Joyosity™ Podcast, Jenn Whitmer welcomes Kevin Monroe — globally known as "The Gratitude Guy" — to explore how gratitude isn't just nice-to-have, it's a game-changer at work. Kevin shares his personal story of accidentally becoming a gratitude expert, the difference between genuine gratitude and transactional thankfulness, and why seeing people — and we mean really seeing them — is at the heart of leadership. This isn't about gratitude jars gathering dust or robotic thank-yous at checkout lines. It's about sparking real human connection, even in the toughest seasons of leadership. Here's what we talked about: 06:12 The Pit of Despair Can Be a Launchpad: Kevin shares how hitting a personal low point ignited his extraordinary work around gratitude — and how struggle often plants the seeds of deeper joy. 09:40 Gratitude ≠ Thankfulness: Thankfulness can be transactional and automatic. Gratitude requires human connection, recognition, and intentionality. 16:05 The Kmart Card Problem: Forcing gratitude isn't going to work for you…or your people 19:55 Connection Powers Engagement: Leadership isn't about checking the “gratitude” box. It's about creating environments where people feel seen, heard, and valued. 28:48 Gratitude Empowers: Simple shifts — like asking “Who made your day better this week?” — can build trust, retention, and authentic workplace culture. When is a cookie a giant letdown? (Nope, not a joke setup.) When the cookie is a crumb compared to the work you do. Because a one-size-fits-all thank-you is just another way to say you don't really see me. In this episode of the Joyosity Podcast, Jenn gets fired up about the difference between generic appreciation and the kind that actually builds culture, boosts performance, and keeps your best people from walking out the door. You'll also discover how the Enneagram can be a powerful tool to personalize appreciation and create true belonging. Sure, it may feel like one more to-do at first—but it's actually the shortcut to saving time, money, and your sanity. In this episode, you'll learn: 01:24 What happens when your gratitude isn't in the right language 04:36 The performance outcomes linked to belonging and feeling seen, heard, and valued (yep, we brought receipts) 10:26 How to stop giving “meh” thank-yous that land worse than a vanilla cookie 13:04 What each Enneagram type actually values in appreciation—and how to speak that language 23:34 How to appreciate what you see and want to see more of 27:01 A tiny challenge that leads to big impact Host: Jenn Whitmer Jenn is an international keynote speaker, leadership consultant, and the founder of Joyosity, helping leaders create positive, profitable cultures through connection, curiosity, and joy. Turns out, shielding your team from stress doesn't protect them—it breaks trust. And if you've ever found yourself trying to carry it all alone? You're not the only one. There's a swirl every modern leader experiences. So we're going there. We're talking team culture and honest leadership, helping you communicate with clarity and redefining what “professional” even means. Listen in on our transparent convo about what makes modern leadership work — and where we all still get stuck. Oh! At 12:45, Shelby names the moment every leader's lived but few say out loud. Professionalism shouldn't mean fake, stuffy, or perfect. 08:03 Change is scary, but not changing is worse.Trying (and potentially failing) is often better than staying stuck in fear. 11:08 Transparency builds trust. When you get distracted by the Shiny Object Syndrome that is AI and tech tools, you make it worse 24:29 Why your internal people matter the most.Clients and customers will stay if you take care of your people. Seriousness about destroyed me in 2nd grade. And unfortunately, it's likely your path to failure as a full-grown adult human. Disagreement is a part of leadership. It's uncomfortable, it's hard but it's a skill that we need to cultivate in order to lead well. This week, we dove into the art of leading when everyone isn't on the same page. As I sat down with a plate of eggs and hashbrowns, I noticed the table conversation revolved around lab-raised meat and a skeptic — not what I was expecting at a business networking breakfast before 8am! How many times have you found yourself in the middle of a conversation that was, well, less than agreeable? When faced with a heated conversation, what's your initial reaction? Understanding whether you're a moonwalker or a stirrer-upper can set the stage for effective leadership. We covered my favorite "Three Question Rule" and how this helps you understand hidden perspectives, builds trust, and opens up avenues for diverse ideas. I gave examples for each of these questions and how to pivot as you listen intensely and with an open heart. Eventually as the leader you will have to make the call, but asking questions will help you lead more effectively and explaining your decisions fosters respect and shows you value your team's input. Transforming disagreements into moments of connection and productivity can make your leadership journey not just successful but joyful. So keep those questions coming and see the positive ripple effects throughout your organization! Still have questions? Book a spark call with me, I'd love to chat! Here's what we talked about: 04:33 What is your first instinct to disagreements 06:08 Why you should ask three questions before you jump in 10:58 First question to ask 12:30 Second question to ask 19:02 Disagreement is rarely efficient 20:00 Third question to ask 22:29 The person asking the questions is leading the conversation Links/ Resources: The Free 99 Step: Spark Session Book a 15 -minute spark session with me here. I had a coworker who was like sandpaper for me. Every time my slack would ding with their name, I would just feel a pang of “ugh”. Have you ever felt that? Truthfully, if you work with people long enough, someone will be this for you…and this might be inevitable at some point in any relationship. I decided to start with donuts. I knew she obsessed over donuts, and I thought maybe some time outside of work talk would do us some good. So I asked her to go for donuts. After that donut shop meeting, her messages did not send me into groan mode. This is the magic of connection! Connection is the glue of healthy leadership. Start with understanding your personality and values to connect with others. Then move to understanding others. Without connection, we start to feel untethered from the goals of an organization and the team. Every relationship doesn't have to include donut shop meetings. But as a leader, you MUST connect with people for your work and team to be effective. In this episode I'm sharing three tips to help you work torward connection. With so much collective anxiety around this election time in the U.S., you may be noticing your team struggling with the connection piece right now. I invite you to sit down and have real conversations. Show your authentic self and be genuinely curious about your team members. You can transform your leadership style and your team this way. It's time to make every workplace a more joy-filled space, starting now! Here's what we talked about: 08:18 Building trust requires communication and connection together 10:14 Disconnection reduces productivity 14:13 Solid connections require self-understanding and presence 19:15 How to be vulnerable and authentic as a leader 25:50 Explore Joyosity for joyful, productive workplace connections 27:23 How to use curiosity to become a better leader Links/ Resources: The Free 99 Step: Joyosity Explorer Map http://jennwhitmer.com/joyosity-explorer will guide you to understanding the deeper purpose and story you tell yourself about your work. As we head into 2024, AttractionPros is proud to present the seventh annual “resolutionary” episode, which sets the stage for the year to come. To go forth, we reflect on 2023 as Matt and Josh discuss not only their personal goals, but goals for the industry as well. As you set your goals for the upcoming year, we hope you discover valuable advice and guidance as we discuss our resolutions, and hope they can provide a great framework to help you achieve your goals for 2024. In this episode, Matt and Josh talk about the power of accountability as they share their goals and resolutions for 2024. Accountability One of the most powerful forces in life is accountability. Josh shares that announcing his upcoming book on the podcast served as a motivating factor, propelling him to publish The Hospitality Mentality in 2023 and ensure its successful completion. Additionally, because AttractionPros has a strong and growing audience that keeps us accountable, it has helped ensure that every Tuesday since September 2017, there's been a new podcast for our listeners to hear. New Year's resolutions often wane or fall short, but establishing not only internal but also external accountability can significantly enhance the pursuit of those goals. This is also incredibly important in our industry, as making sure we hold ourselves accountable ensures that we can deliver great experiences to guests every day of the year. Josh's Resolutions In 2024, Josh wants to focus more on building partnerships and sustaining guest experience initiatives. Josh shares that throughout his career, he's often flown out for a temporary time to deliver a workshop, and typically finds himself working in short timeframes. Josh wants to commit more time to growing guest experience initiatives and building more rewarding and long-lasting relationships within the industry. Josh never expected to become a public speaker, but now finds himself consistently speaking at expos and workshops. Knowing this, Josh wants to commit to becoming a great public speaker in 2024 by taking advantage of the resources around him, such as enrolling in courses at The Second City in Chicago. By finding a unique voice and providing opportunities to laugh, Josh will make sure he's an even better speaker the next time you hear him. Josh's final resolution is that he'd like to hold more in-person events in 2024. After hosting two successful events in 2023 with the AttractionPros meetup and his book launch at IAAPA Expo, Josh has fallen in love with the relaxed environment and opportunities to build relationships and meet people in a setting that doesn't revolve around exchanging business cards. We hope to see you at the AttractionPros meetup in 2024! Matt's Resolutions Matt's first resolution for 2024 is that he'd like to keep building POC (Performance Optimist Consulting) YOUniversity by getting more help. So far, Matt has ventured on this journey primarily alone, and looks forward to bringing new perspectives not only to execute the next steps, but also create them. Matt's second resolution for 2024 is more personal, as he wants to keep committing to his health after receiving open heart surgery. Although several factors are out of his control, Matt realizes there's still plenty he can do to ensure his well-being. Since surgery, Matt's been exercising, avoiding fried foods, and working to build great habits that lead to positive lifestyle changes. Matt's final resolution for 2024 is that he'd like to make sure he can tell his story when it will make a positive impact on somebody. Matt wants to make sure that this story is a chapter in his life, and not the whole book. By using the story in the right moments, Matt can continue to make an incredible impact on people's lives. Resolutions for the Industry Our first 2024 resolution for the industry is to take care of your people. There are far too many people who feel guilty about taking time off, and too many people who feel like they can't take care of themselves. By taking the proper steps, Leadership can hold themselves accountable to improving their employee wellbeing. Our next resolution is to make exceeding expectations part of the standard operating procedure. When we, as leadership, focus our energy in the right place, we can make sure guests have incredible experiences by training our frontline staff to consistently exceed the expectations our guests have developed. Another resolution, as shared by Jenn Whitmer in Episode 322, is to not avoid conflict. So many negative aspects of culture, guest experience, and employee experience occur when we avoid conflict. While conversations can be difficult, handling that conflict and acknowledging the issues can help remedy many negative experiences in the workplace. Our last resolution for the industry is to eliminate the phrase “Let me get my manager.” So many people don't include complaint resolution/recovery in their standard operation procedure. By allowing frontline staff to resolve complaints and provide a service recovery, the guest and employee can both walk away as winners. If you have been inspired by our guests to achieve your goals, we would love to hear about it. Please connect with us via Facebook, Linkedin, X, Instagram, or send us an email. We wish you a happy, healthy, and successful year ahead, and we look forward to bringing you many more amazing guests in 2024! Remember when you were a kid and you went to the swimming pool or the beach and you swam your heart out? You'd come home that happy kind of exhausted. The kind of exhausted that left a smile on your face. A positive culture should feel like that. You should be doing meaningful work, creating an impact, and coming home feeling thrilled and content. Does that sound impossible? In this episode I give you the blueprint to creating the positive work environment of your dreams. No, it's not always going to feel like the perfect beach day every day, but it is going to help you align your values with your actions. If you're new around here, I'm a big fan of the enneagram. If you don't know much about that here's a link to learn more: https://jennwhitmer.com/enneagram. I share my three step process to putting people at the heart of your business and a few red flags you might be hearing or saying. If you've ever thought “we just need to try harder” or “we need to be more efficient” please listen and let me know what you think in the comments on LinkedIn. https://www.linkedin.com/events/whypeoplearetheheartofyourprofi7117855061233340416/comments/ Here's what we talked about: 05:30 What is a positive culture 09:09 How personalities can fuel change 13:30 The stories we tell ourselves 17:44 Aligning your values with your work 23:34 What you can do next
When's the last time you felt that sticky feeling of “I'm uncomfortable, and I'm not sure what's next”? Did you jump into a story about how you should have done something differently? Or maybe they should have?! Before you know it, you might be doing something you regret, like snapping at a coworker or maybe yelling at your kid. Did you act in line with your values? How do you make sure you do better next time? Managing unexpected situations is part of life. Whether it's a broken-down car or a tech slip-up at work, the way we handle ourselves in these moments is critical to creating a positive environment not only for ourselves but for those around us. I wish I could give you a step-by-step Mapquest printout (if you know, you know) for every hard situation that is coming your way. I can't foresee that, and neither can you. But what I share in this episode is a compass. A compass you can pull out when you find yourself in a sticky place and not sure what to do next. This compass shows you where to focus your energy and how to move forward in a way that's grounded in your values and keeps everyone whole. Head over to the live session if you need to screenshot the compass and get a visual for the three E's I share in this episode. I hope it will help you next time you find yourself facing something frustrating at work (or at a gas station in Tennessee!): https://www.linkedin.com/events/thecompassyouneedasaleaderwithj7107720071199821826/comments/ Here's what we talked about: 3:36 Handling unexpected situation 6:09 The Joyosity compass for leadership 9:10 Clarifying your values and using them 9:54 Steps for creating a positive culture 13:20 3 components of experience 15:45 The power of play and fun at work 17:13 Creating positive culture with complex people
What makes hard conversations hard for you? We all want to avoid discomfort and pain and angst. And still, there are important reasons to face the discomfort of hard conversations. Three practical and inspiring reasons that will help you face hard conversations... and a challenge to help you conquer them!
Inspired employees not only make your workplace more enjoyable, but also more productive. This week's live show I revealed Joyosity, a podcast & live show yes… And the PODCAST IS LIVE TODAY! But really, Joyosity is a movement. A way to lead that will inspire your employees and in turn help your organization to prosper. I shared some fascinating recent studies on the power of a positive workplace and how right now more than ever our teams are needing something more. This show is a place for us to come together and test theories and ideas for leadership. A place to collaborate and share stories. A place for community. A place for joy. Here's what we talked about: 05:23 Circumstances and complex people 07:26 Workplace and mental wellness 11:00 Navigating to a positive culture
A floating petrie dish. That's what I used to call cruise ships. Yet, we are on a Disney cruise voyage this week because of Disney's values. (or a short illustration of how values create profit.) In January, I got to listen to a Disney executive speak about the organization in a 30-person retreat. We got to ask lots of questions. And without reviewing my notes, I can tell you how Disney uses its values as a filter for all decision-making. Disney's four core values are safety, courtesy, show, and efficiency. They aren't in any random order. When faced with any situation, the first filter is always safety. Or as my friend Erika likes to say as the car climbs the Mine Train, “Disney won't kill me.” For nearly 26 years, my husband has wanted to go on a cruise. And me? I'm in the floating petrie dish camp. I'm not overly concerned about germs, but my Enneagram Seven self is terrified of being trapped somewhere with a bunch of sick people with no escape. And yet, I'm on a Disney cruise next week. What changed? Transparency of a company's values. Because I experienced Disney's alignment of its values to actions and my connection to that value, I changed my mind. From I'm not going on a cruise to spending a good deal of cash with Disney. This week on Monday Mentor is another mini-workshop with me about values with some of the research behind why values create better workplace experiences and more profitable companies.
Is joy a work extra? When joy is absent, there are high costs — actual dollar bills (or pound notes or bitcoin…) are squandered when joy employees do not have joy at work. What exactly is joy and what in the world does it have to do with the workplace? In this week's Linkedin Live, we revealed some staggering statistics about the business outcomes of joy. We discuss the impact of joy in the workplace on productivity, employee retention, and profitability. We look even deeper into the “joy deficit” and experience a true coaching moment for you. Here's what we talked about: 2:44 Business Outcomes of Joy: productivity, retention, and profit 9:48 Is Joy at work a problem? The joy deficit numbers 12:46 Coaching moment 14:28 What is Joy at Work: the joy equation What do you think? Is this new for you? How do you set intentions for cultivating joy at work? Tell me in the comments.
“Make money while you sleep.” I read that line in a book about 20 years ago, and I was skeptical to say the least. Too good to be true, indeed. Years later, I get it. The author was promoting systems and automations that save time, money, and energy. And today, I'm all “what can I automate!?” And at the same time, I'm a little scared of the tech and the process. Do you ever feel that way with your team? What if you miss something, so you create an overly cumbersome process? Or are there too many choices to automate, so you don't pick anything? I've felt that place of paralyzation. And one of my favorite mentors has helped me out of that space more than once, into smooth systems that make team work and client work smooth and helpful for everyone! Diana Fang joins us on Monday Mentor to talk about why systems help you succeed. She is the most passionate advocate for small business, a world traveler, and the busiest introvert I've ever met.
