It often takes diving head first into all the sticky, messy, & unhealthy means of coping in life to gain spiritual understandings & reach a state of enlightenment. How else would you realize how backwards it is to harm yourself in order to feel better? And if it's backwards, then what would it be to live in a forward manner? This is all to say that life can lead us to bizarre and unthinkable circumstances before we find our peace. My guest this week, Rae Leonard, shares the most delightfully raw, honest, and light hearted account of descending into the depths of addiction and darkness to then rise up again into the light to discover all her glorious intuitive, Divine Feminine gifts. On this guest episode, Rae and I have a lovely conversation comparing stories of addiction, recovery, and uncovering the treasures found in the watery intuition of a Woman's heart and mind. Rae's unique regale of life growing up in the 70's, partying like a rockstar, and then nearly drowning in housewife drug addiction. In this rendition of The Way Out I am beyond excited to bring you a highly entertaining and enlightening interview I had with person in long term recovery, author, speaker, educator, and all-around sobriety and mental health advocate Daniel Patterson. Daniel shares his journey to and through recovery to this point with an unmistakable candor along with a refreshing dose of levity that helps to underscore the overarching Recovery truths that are embodied within Daniel's recovery story and message which are in large part that Recovery is an individual journey, all pathways to recovery matter, and we recover the best when we recover together. Our recovery journey is as unique as we are and if it works for us it's valid and worth sharing with others as much and as often as we feel comfortable doing so, as your particular brand of recovery might just work for some other folks too. There are indeed also universal recovery and spiritual truths like self-honesty, asking for help, and helping others that unite all pathways to recovery, just like we as humans are very much connected by universal experiences like pain, joy, grief and love. Daniel's Recovery journey has led him to do amazing things in the Recovery and Mental Health space, like building sober high schools across the country, speaking at schools, being a Recovery Tik Tok sensation, and now hosting the Sobriety Uncensored Podcast which is an endeavor near and dear to our hearts here at The Way Out Podcast Our Uncensored interview with Daniel and all of the spiritual and recovery truth embodied within is about to unfold before your very ears so listen up. Today's guest is Joe Schrank, a social worker, interventionist, community advocate, and co-founder of “The Fix.” Throughout this episode, Joe discusses the shift in perspective we can have regarding those suffering from addiction. He shares his struggle with addiction, how he went through recovery, and how he helps his clients by meeting them where they are with their addictions. Joe emphasizes that it is necessary to look at all types of recovery instead of thinking that the traditional recovery techniques are the only options. Tune in today to learn more about how you can support someone in your life who is facing addiction, or if you need help with substance use. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:40] September is Recovery Month. Joe wants to bring awareness to Recovery Month. [3:32] How does Joe define recovery? [6:38] What are other roads to recovery aside from abstinence? [10:06] Does AA position itself toward a particular group of people? [15:50] What would it look like if we moved away from criminalization to focus on mental health instead? [19:00] Why do people of wealth and affluence who live in a bubble not get help? [23:02] What kind of screening could doctors do to help those with mental illness? [24:56] What do we value, and why do we not value people with mental health issues (by the way, we all do)? KEY TAKEAWAYS: We need to normalize mental health care: talk about it, support people, and offer early intervention to those who need it. Society would benefit from looking at people who struggle with addiction outside of “they have an addiction” and looking more closely at what they struggle with. People do get better. Recovery is all around us, even if it doesn't look like the “traditional” type of recovery. Every person will struggle with mental health challenges in their life. Whether it's life changes, divorce, family growth, retirement, or something else, there will be a time when each of us struggles with a mental issue. BIO: Social worker, interventionist, community advocate, cofounder of TheFix.com, Joe Schrank has spent his life in and around active alcoholism. Joe underperformed on the USC campus, preferring to blame coaches and professors than to enter mental health care. After a girl dumped him for his “drinking problem,” Joe joined treatment for depression and alcoholism. After stabilizing, he returned to school and studied clinical social work at Iona College and then the University of Illinois. Following a tenure at Promises in Malibu, CA, Joe established the first sober living facility in New York City –, Loft 107. Frustrated with the lack of media attention given the recovery community, Joe founded TheFix.com with Maer Roshan. A big believer in “meeting the client where the client is,” Joe founded High Sobriety, the first cannabis-inclusive treatment center, using medicinal cannabis as an option for some people. Joe continues to advocate for public health policy over-incarceration, alcohol tax justice, and ending the violent and racist drug war.

This is the sixteenth episode in our Lived Experience series, where we speak with some remarkable people who have experienced and overcome adversity, and who are sharing their stories in a way that might help other people in need of support. In this episode we meet Jill Stark, a Melbourne-based journalist, best-selling author and mental health advocate.Jill specialises in writing about social justice, mental health and health issues affecting Australians including the nation's binge drinking culture. It was while writing these award-winning articles back in 2011, published in The Age, that Jill had a reckoning with her own drinking habits. This led to Jill's best-selling book High Sobriety: My Year Without Booze which explores drinking culture in both Scotland, where she grew up, and in Australia, through the lens of her own relationship with alcohol.“I was internally wrestling with my own relationship with alcohol… and as I said in High Sobriety, during the week I writing about Australia's alcohol problem and on the weekends, I was writing myself off…,” Jill says.Jill's shared openly about her life-long struggle with anxiety and depression, and experienced a mental health crisis at a time of her life where on the outside, she was experiencing career and writing success. Her second book Happy Never After: why the happiness fairytale is driving us mad (and how I flipped the script) begins with her experiencing a panic attack at work. This was the start of what Jill says was the darkest period of her life.“That was the last time I was in the newsroom for nearly five months…it escalated from there. I couldn't work, I could barely leave the house…,” Jill says.“I had thought, unconsciously…that once I had all of these external things that would prove that I was a worthy, valuable human, that I would feel whole, and I would feel happy and at peace with myself…I could have had Ryan Gosling under one arm and a Pulitzer Prize under the other, it wouldn't have been enough, because underneath at all, I didn't feel like I was enough. I felt like there was something missing.”Jill's hard-earned work on her mental health and her insights offer hope and connection to anyone doing it tough, because she knows what it's like when you're not OK. “To me good mental health is accepting all of yourself, not just the shiny parts we put up on Facebook and Instagram,” Jill says.If you are affected by anything discussed in this episode, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or go to lifeline.org.au Jill's latest book is When You're Not Ok: a toolkit for tough times. To find out more about Jill go to her website jillstark.com.au or follow her on Instagram @JillStark__ where she shares candidly about life, mental health and her advocacy work. ermha365 provides a range of mental health services designed to help people experiencing mental health challenges to thrive in the community.
In this episode we catch up with cannabis clinician and educator Dr. Sherry Yafai Sherry Yafai MD is a Cannabis and Board Certified Emergency Medicine physician at Providence St. John's Medical Center since 2009. In 2017, after adult use cannabis laws had passed in California, Dr. Yafai opened her private Cannabis Clinic, the ReLeaf Institute, where she sees patients referred by physicians for cannabis education and treatment. Dr. Yafai is a former Co-Vice President and current board member of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, the previous Director of Research and Development at High Sobriety, a member of the UCLA Cannabis Initiative and speaker for UCSD Center for Medical Cannabis Research. In 2018 she was accepted as an Adjunct Associate Professor at John Wayne Cancer Institute (now Saint Johns Cancer Institute). Dr. Yafai works to educate physicians, clinicians, and other health care providers on the most up to date clinical data and research in the field of Cannabis. Did you know that dementia disproportionately impacts women, black, and latino people? Did you know that cannabis was made illegal because of racist policy? Lives are still being ruined because of prohibitionist propaganda even after cannabis started to become decriminalized, and are still to this day. Racial groups targeted by these draconian policies seem to have lots of cultural stigma remaining that prevents them from making use of plant medicine. Despite cannabis medicine being legal in more than 2/3rds of U.S. States, in order for people living with dementia to get some relief today, we need to get cannabis de-scheduled, and open up the Schedule I of Drugs for research. We must end the Drug War. Contact your Senators, Representatives and the President to let them know that you want to de-schedule cannabis and open up the Schedule I for research at the very least. This week, I'm joined by my good friend JILL STARK to talk about anxiety, lockdown and some of the tools we can use to ground us when we're feeling fizzy brained. Jill's first book, “High Sobriety” was about the year she spent sober. She has since become sober again, and we talk about what this means for a person's mental health and some of the emotional challenges that come with committing to and maintaining sobriety. It gave me a lot to think about in terms of my own relationship to alcohol, and I know it will resonate strongly with listeners! From little sisters, we answer questions about how to get back into dating without losing yourself in a prospective partner; what to do when the person you've been developing intimacy with decides to soft ghost you and insist it's only ‘casual'; and how to react when a close friend becomes ‘the other woman'.You can follow Jill and her posts about mental health, sobriety and anxiety at the following places:Twitter: @jillastarkFacebook: @jillstarkInstagram: @jillstark__Tracie Egan Morrisey's Emotional Conquistador article here: https://jezebel.com/dudes-today-the-emotional-conquistador-is-the-new-sexu-5022624Buy Jill's books here: https://www.booktopia.com.au/high-sobriety-jill-stark/book/9781922070227.html?source=pla&gclid=CjwKCAiA5IL-BRAzEiwA0lcWYujpMh5xqbP_lEoZ6ucwX8IVb4_40sP8xEGn5XgGj6FZXIB4GJ1yoBoCSZ8QAvD_BwEFeedback/Question submission: bigsisterhotline@gmail.comPatreon: www.patreon.com/clementinefordInstagram: www.instragram.com/clementine_ford****(And remember, if you like the show then please consider rating and reviewing it!) In this episode, Lauren and Jessica talk with John Mabry about the important topic of addiction. John Mabry serves as Director of Public Outreach and the host of ‘High Sobriety’ podcast for Addiction Campuses. Mabry spends much of his time speaking out on the stigma of addiction and mental health. He also has a passion for talking with audiences about the importance of processing early childhood trauma or adverse childhood experiences. Research confirms that not acknowledging early negative experiences, like abuse, neglect, parental separation, bullying, etc. leads to significantly higher chances of being addicted later in life. Letting people know there is hope out of these negative experiences is key to curbing the addiction and opioid epidemic our country is in right now. Joe Schrank got the call six years ago that his friend Greg Giraldo had been found unconscious after an overdose in a New Jersey hotel room. Schrank had tried in vain to save him. Using pot instead of cocaine and Valium was something Schrank had suggested to his friend weeks before his death. Although it is an unpopular idea in the rehab world, where Schrank had made his career, he nonetheless had a hunch marijuana could have helped his friend. After Giraldo’s death, Schrank began working with Bienenfeld on treatment plans that incorporated marijuana as a crucial detox step. He also connected with Amanda Reiman, former head of marijuana law and policy at the Drug Policy Alliance, whose research at University of California, Berkeley, for more than a decade has focused on the use of cannabis as a viable substitute for prescription drugs. Schrank took another step and opened High Sobriety – a first-of-its-kind rehab center that uses cannabis as a central part of its treatment plan. Seen as a highly contentious move in the rehab world, High Sobriety has been met with skepticism and criticism for its use of marijuana in a field where success is traditionally measured by total abstinence.

jed and jay discuss annoying sounds, tell a story about a guy comparing God to a drug dealer, read some emails, and then our resident hindu heroin addict Debesh M. steps in to interview Joe Schrank about a rehab that lets you smoke weed , called "High Sobriety". we're not making this up, folks.
Interventionist, sober companion, Fix co-founder and former proprietor of Brooklyn's Loft 107 Sober Living, Joe Schrank is a somewhat controversial figure in recovery circles. While he's never been afraid to speak his mind, Schrank has just launched his most chatter-worthy business of all: High Sobriety, an LA-based "cannabis included" treatment center that offers, in its own words, "harm reduction through an innovative medication assisted program." The first of its kind in the United States, High Sobriety is aimed at those people who Schrank feels would be dead if they had to abstain from all chemicals—that is, those who try sobriety and end up with a needle in their arm. In this episode, Schrank discusses his own sobriety, how the US is conservative in its approach to recovery and why the issue of harm reduction isn't as simple as it first seems, among many other topics.
Joe Schrank calls in and gives us an exclusive on his new rehab where patients are allowed to smoke weed, we talk about a recent Artie Lange interaction that went poorly, and Chris shares the details about the last time he got high.
