In this episode, I talk to a Cancer Survivor, Crystal Howrie. After 30 years in the travel and tourism industry, Crystal experienced her own personal journey with cancer which has inspired her to start her own home-based travel agency and set up a cancer support charity called Blue Dot Army in 2013. Blue Dot represents the permanent tattoo you require when receiving conventional radiation treatment. Crystal met some incredible people during that time sitting in waiting rooms. She heard so many stories that touched her heart that she made a commitment to one day go back into that world and change the cancer experience for others. The symbol chosen for Blue Dot Army is the butterfly, it represents change, endurance, hope, and life - all the things needed when diagnosed with Cancer. In our talk, we discuss turning trauma into opportunity, the effects of cancer, and the new possibilities that have arisen for Crystal. The areas covered in the conversation: 1. Crystal's Background Bio 2. How Crystal used her cancer trauma to create an opportunity 3. An understanding of the Blue Dot 4. A discussion about cancer 5. Crystals positive mindset 6. On this episode of Talk Bravely, I chat with professional mountain biker and Liv Racing team member Crystal Anthony. Crystal has an AMAZING story of growing up the oldest of 7 siblings in Massachusetts, heading to college for an undergraduate degree in kinesiology and a Masters in Education in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard, and then pursuing mountain bike and cyclocross racing and running her own coaching business. Crystal currently lives in Northwest Arkansas rides for Liv Racing. She has raced in 12 countries and represented the US 3x at the World Championships   What we’re talking about: The honor she had “wearing the colors of the US and representing our country” in the Cyclocross World Championships She didn’t start organized athletics until joining the cross country team in COLLEGE and found her passion running long distances. How missing the Olympic Trials marathon qualification time by 16 seconds was a moment to reflect and consider training for something else. Crystal shares that she was never motivated by becoming a pro racer or making money racing bikes; she was driven to get better and to win! What does it really mean to be a pro racer. Make a complete living through racing; gets paid something to race; your only job, regardless of making money, is racing. For Crystal, she gets compensated for racing, but also makes a living through coaching others to their best performance. How Crystal made the decision to leave her full time job to pursue racing and coaching full time. It was motivating to have 2 passions of teaching middle school and racing on the weekends Identity was tied up in both Security of a steady job kept her in the job as well as the impact she knew she was having on her students Eventually the logistics of managing both became too difficult and it was hard to leave teaching. Before leaving her position to pursue biking full time, Crystal made sure she had enough in savings to sustain her for a year and also reached out to mentors. Her community supported her and lifted her up and gave her the courage and knowledge to be self sufficient. Liv Racing and how awesome it is to race for them. They support getting more women on bikes and also provide a ton of resources for free on their website. How Crystal actually learned to be part of the racing community, developed herself as a racer and nutrition expert, developed her coaching skills, and learned to run a business and market herself to potential sponsors. (Hint: she built a community around her willing to support her) She’s a total saver and still has training clothes from 17 years ago. How Covid-19 has impacted the racing industry, and how it impacted her recent move to Northwest Arkansas. She introduced me to ‘Everesting’ - the idea that you choose a hill and ride your bike up and down over and over again until you reach the elevation gain of Everest at about 29,000 feet. And having completed that athletic feat has put in perspective the "longer" races she had on her schedule for the first time.   Connect with Crystal: Crystal Anthony Coaching offers everything from 1 on 1 skill lessons to coaching plans to clinics. She loves to work with anyone who wants to get better on the mountain bike! Coaching options are up on her site. If you don’t, stay tuned. We dig a little deeper. Drew D’Agostino, founder and CEO of Crystal, joins us to discuss common assumptions and biases that disrupt the true art of communication. This interview delves into: How Crystal was born What communication really means How Crystal can improve your company’s messaging How your company can leverage personality differences during the COVID-19 crisis The hidden meaning behind Crystal' “Personality AI” categorization Our Guest This week’s guest is Drew D’Agostino. He’s the Founder and CEO of Crystal Knows, an online application that uses AI to predict personality so users can communicate effectively, resolve conflict, manage stress, influence others, and make better decisions in their professional lives. Previously, Drew was CTO of Attend.com, an event management software company. He is a thought leader in Personality AI and has been featured in Inc., Fortune, CNN, Fast Company, MIT Technology Review, Wired, and The Guardian. Drew has been recognized by Forbes as 30 Under 30 in enterprise technology and is the co-author of Predicting Personality, published by Wiley in 2019. Show Notes Learn more about how psychological studies can help you shape your buyer personas. HOW WAS CRYSTAL BORN AND WHERE IS IT HEADING? After Drew and Crystal COO Greg Skloot left their previous company, they became fascinated by the idea of using DiSC assessments in a predictive manner. Drew dove into NLP and machine learning in order to create a prototype that could analyze a LinkedIn profile and produce a personality assessment. The company sold its first subscription and officially launched in early 2015. Since then, it’s been off to the races. “It was an emotional response to software that I’d never seen before.” - Drew D’Agostino Drew and his team are now trying to build a foundation off of where Crystal Knows truly fits in the market. THE TRUE ART OF COMMUNICATION When it comes to communication, there should be no blanket ideas. There should be no assumptions based on our personal preferences. When sending an email, how do you know whether to use short, to-the-point sentences versus elaborate, colorful language? Communicating and connecting with people in the context of marketing is more than just gut feelings. It’s a science. “Most people think communication is saying what you want to say in the way you want to say it. The true art of communication is altogether opposite. It's saying what you want to say in a way the other person can understand.” - Angus Nelson HOW CAN CRYSTAL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR AUDIENCE? Over the years, Crystal has oscillated between markets because it’s generally a powerful, flexible personality tool. Crystal can be utilized by marketing professionals in micro- or macro-approaches. For example: Identifying the communication styles that will be most effective in sales emails and pitches Identifying common personality traits of their customer-base to develop effective messaging. “Data can be your secret weapon.” - Drew D’Agostino There’s a danger in making assumptions about people, in making assumptions about personality types. “Making assumptions about people results in biases, which results in awkwardness, which results in miscommunication and just overall inauthenticity.” - Drew D’Agostino IS YOUR COMPANY LEVERAGING PERSONALITY DIFFERENCES DURING THE COVID-19 CRISIS? “When you’re remote, personality differences seem to blow up.” - Drew D’Agostino In written communication, what people really mean versus what is interpreted from the message can be dramatically different. It creates real problems. Just like companies attempting to better understand their employees or customers during this crisis, Drew and his team are trying to understand how this remote shift is affecting how people are actually using Crystal Knows. We've compiled four steps to fortify your infrastructure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn how your company can emerge from this crisis stronger than ever. THE HIDDEN MEANING BEHIND CRYSTAL ' “PERSONALITY AI” CATEGORIZATION Although Crystal Knows is categorized under a blanket term (AI), Drew views Crystal Knows as technology that is enhancing human communications and relationships where technology may have previously stripped the humanity away. “Technology is here to stay, but how do you re-inject emotional intelligence into where it has been taken?” - Drew D’Agostino

Today’s guest is Crystal Hammond. She attended Ohio State University and graduated with a degree is in Electrical & Computer Engineering. She also is a landlord (an awesome one) and used to be a day trader. She’s a paid Zumba and INSANITY instructor, has helped people lose significant amounts of weight, and has helped others start their own blogs. She started her own blog on May 16, 2011 - lost everything twice - and restarted again both times. She loves to travel and has been to 17 countries/islands. She’s currently working to build a food box subscription company (she sees it as an experiment) and runs the Grocery Game Challenge. She sees herself as the side hustle queen. Be sure to take some time to get to know Crystal on this episode. Her aggressive “can do” attitude is contagious. TWEET: Ep. 61: Crystal Hammond - Being a #SideHustle Queen Requires Resilience She uses pen and paper to keep her life organized and effective. In the digital age we live in, it’s not very common to hear of someone who’s still using a traditional day planner to organize and get things done. But Aimee’s guest today, Crystal Hammond is one of those people - and she does it far beyond what most people using digital means are willing to do. Crystal not only plans using her planner, she journals, and keeps track of her accomplishments each day - even the conversations she has and the people she meets. And she believes the level of detail she records about her life is what enables her to do so many things and keep herself sane at the same time. Even if you have no interest in keeping a pen and paper record of your life, you can learn a ton from Crystal about organization and processes, so be sure you listen to this episode. Discovering what you love is more a process than an event. When Aimee J. asked Crystal Hammond how she went about discovering what she loved, Crystal said it wasn’t so much a discovery as it was a process of exploration. She has tried and done so many things in her lifetime, many of them very successfully, and it’s those efforts and trials that have led her down the path to finding things that truly resonate with her gifts, talents, and desires. You can hear Crystal’s journey toward discovery of her desires and loves on this episode of the Chasing Dreams podcast. TWEET: Discovering what you love is more a process than an event. Find out more on this episode Her mistakes are exactly why she shares her story with others. Crystal Hammond is not your average blogger. She tells everything about her experiences - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Most bloggers aren’t willing to be so vulnerable but Crystal believes that her mistakes are the exact things others need to know about so that they don’t get discouraged and give up. There’s something encouraging about knowing that you’re not the only one experiencing the things you are. There’s something helpful about learning from the mistakes of others, shared humbly and with a heart to help. That’s the kind of mentor and blogger Crystal tries to be. If you take the time to listen to Crystal’s story you’ll walk away with a bigger perspective on your own failures and lessons learned. Never underestimate the power of a plan. Crystal Hammond is a meticulously organized person so you'd expect her to say that planning is essential to a successful and productive life. But her approach is not to tell you exactly how you should do the organizing but that you should look to the benefits that come from being organized and then decide on a plan that fits you and your lifestyle. Crystal is convinced that everyone who is willing to take the time to discover and utilize a planning system for their life and projects will see their productivity and success increase exponentially.
