Actor Ray Liotta was coming off crtitical acclaim for his star making turn in Martin Scorcese's Goodfellas and was looking for a vehicle that would turn him into a bonafide movie star. For others that path was paved by action movies so Liotta signed on to 1994's No Escape hoping it would catapult him to international acclaim. As the stoic, brooding J. T. Robbins, Liotta was able to not only show brawn, but also brains as he attempts to escape the island penal colony of Absolom and it's violent de facto leader Marek played by Stuart Wilson. The film also boasts Ernie Hudson, Kevin Dillon, Kevin J. O'Connor and Lance Henriksen. Dan and Vicky discuss the actioner along with some recently seen movie and TV shows like Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Beyonce's Renaissance, The Holdovers and Hulu's The Bear. *This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike* Ayo Edebiri is everywhere in 2023, a year that includes five film roles, appearances in eight TV series, and her first ever Emmy nomination for playing sous-chef Sydney in Hulu's “The Bear.” So it's taken a bit to get used to the downtime she's in now, thanks to careful planning (plus concurrent strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA). Either way, she needed the space to, in her words, “be a human being.” “It feels so trite but it's the most crucial thing,” she says. “Any [artist] who is so consumed with making things, making things, making things, there's no reserve in the well. There's no real life in you.” On this episode of In the Envelope: The Actor's Podcast, Edebiri explains her journey from stand-up stages and writers rooms to a packed performance schedule, as well as how she feels about taking on her biggest project yet—the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie “Thunderbolts.” --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. Hour 3: Bulldog and Nate give their thoughts on Hulu's The Bear.
If anyone in Hollywood has experienced every aspect of the business, it's Jamie Lee Curtis. “I've been doing this for a long time with very little expectations. I've just had a really good time doing what I get to do, when [and] with who I get to do it with. You just never know when someone's going to really love something,” Curtis told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. Fresh off her Oscar win for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,' Curtis is keeping busy, first with Disney's Haunted Mansion, bringing to life the mysterious Madame Leota. “I remember thinking, ‘Why is that woman in the crystal ball? What's going on with her?'” She's also receiving even more award buzz for her portrayal of the high-strung matriarch on Hulu's ‘The Bear.' “How many of us know people who are so desperate for help but then claim they don't want it? It's a beautiful portrait, the whole show.” If that wasn't enough, she's also out with a new graphic novel, ‘Mother Nature.' Considering how busy she is, Curtis is unsure if she'll have time to direct the film version. “I'm hoping to. The problem is, I'm getting work.” We're certainly glad she has that problem. In this episode, Brandon has an idea with multimillion-dollar potential: Lowercase numbers! We, humans of the 21st century, are the proud consumers of such a huge variety of products and experiences that it would make a cornucopia blush. And yet ... we're all just resigned to one single way to write numbers. What's the deal? So, yeah, we blow our horn of plenty a bit about the creative and financial opportunities for this new invention ... before Brandon drops the inconvenient truth. But that gets us thinking about the way cultural innovations come in and out of style, which leads us, naturally, to the announced closure of "the world's best restaurant," Noma. Where will foodies get their reindeer penis now? ask some of the wags in the media, who wouldn't know a good fricasseed reindeer penis if it came served in a hollowed-out antler enrobed in fermented goji berries. News of the closure did allow for some soul-searching: Is this the death of fine dining? No ... but really? Like — fine dining? A lot of the hoohah revolved around labor conditions at Noma and elsewhere. But the more existential question lurking under all these stories, and in our own heads: Does it really matter? Tuck in your locally foraged napkin and sit down for a mental meal with us. When the check comes, don't freak out about the price, but think about how much more interesting those numbers could be. NOTES FOX News always has the best comments section // Bon Appetit talks "unsustainability" // Euronews on Noma // A bit from Hulu's "The Bear"
This week on The Nerdpocalypse Podcast, the guys return to discuss how HBO Max has dealt a crushing blow to fans of Titans and Doom Patrol, announcing the cancellation of both shows after their fourth seasons come to an end. The spotlight will soon be on Hollywood's brightest stars as the 95th Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place on February 27, 2023, we discuss the biggest categories and our thoughts on the nominations. In the streaming world, Disney reigned supreme, amassing a staggering 80 billion hours of movies watched in the top 15 alone in 2022. The Razzies have issued an apology for their recent nomination that sparked backlash and thus instituting a new age limit policy, while Adult Swim has taken action following domestic violence charges against Rick and Morty star Justin Roiland, firing him from the show. The hosts also give their thoughts on the new trailer for Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and Batman: The Doom that came to Gotham.

Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, and Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including Disney Plus's Ms. Marvel & Baymax; AMC's Better Call Saul; and Hulu's The Bear. News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh discuss the recent news that CW's The Flash will be returning early next year for a shortened 9th and final season. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, and Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. This month, everyone had a different pick. Josh declared HBOMAX the winner thanks to its emmy nomination haul, it's flashy A24 content deal, and the buzz around their new Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. Meanwhile Bill gave the crown to DisneyPlus, which also made out pretty well on emmy nomination morning, has a trio of hype-worthy new series coming soon in She-Hulk, I Am Groot, and Andor, and welcomes a new season of BLUEY. Finally, Alex decided to give it all to Hulu, with their discourse dominating content in the world of both TV (The Bear & Only Murders in the Building) and Film (Bob's Burgers, Fire Island, Good Luck to You Leo Grand, & Not Okay). New Series Spotlight – Alex, Bill, and Josh watched Prime Video original series Paper Girls created by Toy Story 4's Stephany Folsom & Halt & Catch Fire's Christopher Cantwell and starring Ali Wong and a half dozen young actresses, and of course it is adapted from the acclaimed comic book by Brian K. Vaughan The series follows a group of twelve year old paper delivery girls who have a Hell Night they'll never forget. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popbreaktv/message
The podcast is back, and we've got a winner! Editor Neal Pollack welcomes Stephen Garrett to argue with him about Jordan Peele's Nope. As a loser in the Hollywood wars, Pollack likes Nope's central theme of Hollywood chewing up and spitting out talent. Stephen thinks the movie is all over the place and is too clever for its own good. However, they both love the “Gordy's Home” scenes and wonder if that should have been the whole movie.Omar Gallaga returns to our stages to talk to Neal about Nathan Fielder's ‘The Rehearsal‘ on HBO Max. Nathan sets up various absurd simulations to help people prepare for difficult life simulations. Omar seems to like it though he's not sure what Nathan is really up to. It's dark and weird and very meta. And Neal's conversation with Omar is just a rehearsal for the actual conversation. Then Daniel Cohen comes by to talk with Neal about Hulu's ‘The Bear,' the most realistic depiction of restaurant life ever put to film. Neal also admires the realistic way The Bear depicts Chicago. It's like going to see community theater on Sheridan Road on a Friday night. Great performances from the whole cast, especially Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. After some questioning by Daniel, Neal determines that he wants his Italian beef hot and dipped. It's the only way to go. And this is the only entertainment podcast you need all week!

Today on Art of the Cut, we talk to the editors of HULU's “The Bear.” It's got some really innovative editing and when I queried Art of the Cut fans about the shows they wanted to hear more about, “The Bear” was high on the list. The editor of the pilot episode - and half of the others in the series - is Joanna Naugle. In addition to her work on “The Bear,” Joanna has also worked on TV series including Human Resources, Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts, Ramy, and Some Good News. Adam Epstein's other work includes more than a decade at Saturday Night Live, plus TV series including Mr. Mayor, That Damn Michael Che, and Some Good News.
“COUSIN!” This week we put on our chef hats and aprons to discuss Hulu's The Bear (0:29). We chat about the chaotic kitchen energy, the heartfelt performances, and the Chicago of it all. Then we break down our thoughts on each character, our favorite scenes and our hopes for season 2. As always, we end with our SOTW (1:00:29).

They agreed on everything including the exceptional writing, acting and general approach to showing the truth behind how very hard it is to work in a restaurant. Hulu's The Bear touches on everything from family dynamics to suicide to money to the idea of striving for excellence. Hollister says you can't binge, Wilder said, “watch me!”
