“The winning combination will include not just removal—but real destruction of PFAS.” - Brian Liotta PFAS: The Invisible Challenge Reshaping Water Treatment PFAS chemicals are everywhere—from consumer products to our bloodstream. But as regulations tighten, water treatment professionals must now evolve faster than ever. In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, host Trace Blackmore speaks with Brian Liotta, Director of Marketing and Product Development at USALCO, about the shifting regulatory landscape and the advanced technologies being developed to monitor, remove, and destroy PFAS compounds. From Industry Curiosity to Regulatory Urgency Brian candidly shares how he “fell into” the world of PFAS, sparked by client questions and his work with AWT's Wastewater Subcommittee. Over time, he became one of the industry's clearest voices on how PFAS is transforming everything from chemical manufacturing to compliance practices. In this conversation, Brian breaks down the science, the timeline, and the technologies professionals need to understand—whether they're manufacturers, consultants, or field engineers. Testing, Treatment, and Destruction: What's Working and What's Coming Testing for PFAS isn't straightforward. Brian outlines why high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry are still standard, despite the lack of affordable, field-ready kits. Then, he walks us through the big three: granular activated carbon, ion exchange, and membrane filtration—explaining how each performs and what their operational limits are. He also introduces lesser-known but emerging strategies like foam fractionation, electrostatic concentration, and supercritical water oxidation—some of which could shape the next generation of end-to-end PFAS solutions. The Legal Front: EPA Rules, State Action, and the Chevron Doctrine The conversation turns toward the regulatory environment: from the EPA's national drinking water standard of 4 parts per trillion to individual state actions in California, Maine, New York, and others. Brian unpacks the implications of the Chevron Doctrine being overturned and why this legal shift may slow federal implementation but accelerate state-led policies. What It Means for Water Treatment Professionals Whether you're new to industrial water or managing a large portfolio, Brian delivers a simple but powerful takeaway: understand the regulations, study the technologies, and provide solutions. With PFAS-related services on the rise, the opportunity for technical leadership and business growth is clear—but only for those who do their homework and move early. Conclusion PFAS isn't just a regulatory buzzword—it's a catalyst for innovation. As Brian notes, the most successful professionals will be those who bridge the gap between evolving science and real-world application. It's one of the most iconic scenes in one of the greatest movies in American history, and it has almost nothing to do with the rest of the plot. It's mob capo Paulie Cicero, played by the late Paul Sorvino. He's in a minimum-security prison with the rest of the wise guys. They've bribed the guards so they can have all the stuff they need for a proper Italian dinner, which they are about to cook themselves: Vinnie's making the tomato sauce, his meatballs a mixture of veal, beef, pork, and too many onions; Johnny Dio's cooking T-bones in a pan over a portable electric burner; then Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta, shows up with fresh Italian loaves, prosciutto, salami, and a bottle of J&B Scotch. Goodfellas (stylized GoodFellas) is a 1990 American biographical crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Nicholas Pileggi and Scorsese, and produced by Irwin Winkler. It is a film adaptation of the 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy by Pileggi. Starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino, the film narrates the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill and his friends and family from 1955 to 1980. Scorsese initially titled the film Wise Guy and postponed making it; he and Pileggi later changed the title to Goodfellas. To prepare for their roles in the film, De Niro, Pesci and Liotta often spoke with Pileggi, who shared research material left over from writing the book. According to Pesci, improvisation and ad-libbing came out of rehearsals wherein Scorsese gave the actors freedom to do whatever they wanted. The director made transcripts of these sessions, took the lines he liked most and put them into a revised script, which the cast worked from during principal photography. Goodfellas premiered at the 47th Venice International Film Festival on September 9, 1990, where Scorsese was awarded with Silver Lion for Best Director, and was released in the United States on September 19, 1990, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was made on a budget of $25 million and grossed $47 million. Goodfellas received widespread acclaim upon release: the critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes calls it "arguably the high point of Martin Scorsese's career". The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Pesci winning for Best Supporting Actor. The film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including Best Film and Best Director. Additionally, Goodfellas was named the year's best film by various critics' groups. Goodfellas is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, particularly in the gangster genre. In 2000, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.[5][6] Its content and style have been emulated in numerous other pieces of media.[7

On December 12, 2023, Ray Liotta -- best known for his iconic performances in Field of Dreams and Goodfellas -- passed away in his sleep while filming a movie in the Dominican Republic. His fiery intensity and hint of menace created a lasting imprint on film history, but it was Liotta's sweet and gentle nature offscreen that stood out most to his family, friends, and those closest to him. On today's episode of the Entrepreneur Evolution Podcast, we are joined by Laura Liotta. For Laura Liotta, there's nothing new about the 'new' paradigm of female leadership. That's because she re-imagined our way of working over two decades ago when she founded Sam Brown Inc. Healthcare Communications, one of few PR firms bringing together a team of independent agency owners to crowdsource complementary skill sets, collaborate on client work, and generate continual growth through countless economic downturns. Long before Zoom existed to support hybrid work or the term 'work/life balance' was even a thing, Laura was the first person to build a PR agency model with a network of industry experts all working remotely (since 1999!) Her intention was to offer her clients unparalleled senior strategy & service, all while providing her colleagues - many of whom were working mothers - a sense of personal AND professional fulfillment. Nearly 25 years later, Laura & her small-but-mighty team at Sam Brown Inc. are on track to generate billings of ~$15MM in 2023 alone. The agency has represented an extensive list of clients including a blockbuster migraine medication in collaboration with celebrity influencers (does the name Kardashian ring a bell?) and the only plant-derived cannabis drug ever approved by the FDA. Nearly 25 years ago, Laura could have written the guidebook on empowered feminine leadership, intrapreneurship and remote work, and she'd now love to provide your forward-thinking audience with unparalleled wisdom as a seasoned PR strategist and business trailblazer. Actor Ray Liotta was coming off crtitical acclaim for his star making turn in Martin Scorcese's Goodfellas and was looking for a vehicle that would turn him into a bonafide movie star. For others that path was paved by action movies so Liotta signed on to 1994's No Escape hoping it would catapult him to international acclaim. As the stoic, brooding J. T. Robbins, Liotta was able to not only show brawn, but also brains as he attempts to escape the island penal colony of Absolom and it's violent de facto leader Marek played by Stuart Wilson. The film also boasts Ernie Hudson, Kevin Dillon, Kevin J. O'Connor and Lance Henriksen. Dan and Vicky discuss the actioner along with some recently seen movie and TV shows like Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Beyonce's Renaissance, The Holdovers and Hulu's The Bear. PORTRAITS OF THE ARTISTS (AKA DENZEL MONTH) has been a hell of a time and it's been fun to examine the lives of such cornerstone actors in Paul Robeson and Denzel Washington. Those two men seem very different in personality but for this final edition of our theme, Denzel takes on a role that might be the closest to Robeson's preferred type. A struggling, hardworking, family man trying to make ends meet in a medical emergency. It was a hit during a time when random dramas seemed to be seen, though not much of it gets said even in context of the Denzel oeuvre and broader film culture. A very direct critique of the U.S. medical system in Nick Cassavetes's absolutely dripping melodrama from 2002, “JOHN Q.”. Denzel is the obvious everyman who successfully holds his own dramatic weight. It also stars Kimberly Elise, James Woods, Anne Heche (RIP), Robert Duvall and Ray Fuckin' Liotta. We miss you Ray. The people finally get a little propaganda in this far from perfect story that occasionally brushes up against “ridiculous”. Charming family dynamic with a few good dramatic moments and maybe a little misdirected in its cleanliness through the home stretch. Nonetheless, we can all relate to dealing with our shitty medical system. So long January's theme. The Lufthansa Heist etched its name in the annals of criminal history, standing as a stark reminder of the audacity of organized crime. when a group of mobsters executed this meticulously planned robbery, they weren't just committing a crime; they were setting a new benchmark for criminal exploits in America. The heist, which occurred in the winter chill of December 1978 at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, was not just another robbery; it was the largest of its kind in American history. Twelve years later, it would inspire the Martin Scorsese classic film, "Goodfellas." Navy and Marine Corps veterans discuss the indispensable role of their chaplain — and why priests are so desperately needed in the military(0:03) Canton native Deacon Matthew Kurt, a seminarian studying for the priesthood at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, plans to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. military once he's ordained. He describes his formation on military bases and why he's pursuing a ministry among America's front-line soldiers — a ministry desperately in need of priests.(5:04) Lt. Col. Michael Murray describes a memorable encounter with his chaplain, Msgr. Tim Hogan, while deployed in Iraq. He was about to be sent out on a mission with a high degree of danger, and needed confession.(11:20) Msgr. Hogan, a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit and former U.S. Navy chaplain, relays his vocation story — a story that started at a high school graduation party. Unlike Deacon Kurt's, Msgr. Hogan's story started with the military, and continued when he discovered a calling to the priesthood later as an enlisted officer. (14:12) In 1985, the Archdiocese for the Military Services invites Msgr. Hogan to consider becoming a military chaplain. He describes the high stakes of chaplaincy, and the day-to-day role of a spiritual father to soldiers in harm's way.(21:03) Captain Julie Liotta, a former combat engineer officer with the Marine Corps for 2003-07, describes her encounter with Msgr. Hogan, who was overseeing the rebuilding of a chapel on base in Iraq that was damaged by incoming fire. (26:59) Liotta describes the lasting impact Msgr. Hogan had on her faith. She and Murray describe the great need for military chaplains — especially Catholic chaplains — considering a drastic shortage of those ministering to soldiers whose lives are on the line. Msgr. Hogan recounts a story of a conversation with a Marine who said he hadn't seen a priest in nine months of deployment. (34:20) Liotta and Murray talk about how much of a difference chaplains make for the men and women in uniform, and put the shortage of chaplains into perspective.Reporting by Daniel Meloy; narration by Fr.
