Halloween is a favourite time of year and often a misunderstood holiday. Especially in the land down under. Although refined in old America it holds its roots in ancient pagan rituals and mostly Irish and Celtic traditions. Along with “Guiesing” the Irish tradition of children dressing up and performing for a treat. One of my favourites is the origin of the famed Jack-O-Lantern. For this we will go back to old Ireland and the story of the mischievous “Stingy Jack” and how he tricked the devil. But did the devil have the last laugh? Join me as we look into Halloween days of old and the Legend of Stingy Jack. Jack-O-Lanterns, ghosts, goblins, skulls, spiders, cobwebs and horror movies remind most of us of Halloween along with fun costumes, bags of candy and spooky scary decorations. But what are we really celebrating? While many of us ‘celebrate' and observe this holiday annually by dressing up in costumes, carving pumpkins, decorating our houses, and handing out candy to kids in our neighborhoods, most of us don't reflect very much on what exactly we are honoring. We are in fact just going with the flow of culture. On today's episode, members of the Critical Bench team discuss the dilemma of Christians celebrating a day with convoluted spiritual significance, death, and darkness. Does this day go against the teachings of the Bible or the Words of Jesus or is the American celebration of Halloween just about having some fun, wearing costumes, and eating some candy?

The Ugly Pumpkin Interview with Howard Friedlander In this My Life Now episode, Dallas interviews Howard Friedlander author of, "The Ugly Pumpkin." About the Book: Halloween was coming. For all the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch this was the night they had been waiting for all year long. For Halloween meant they would become Jack-O-Lanterns and bring fun and joy to boys and girls everywhere. But not Pumpy the Pumpkin. He was not going to be a Jack-O-Lantern, even though it was his dream. You see, Pumpy was different. While all the other pumpkins where large and round, Pumpy was long and somewhat squished. The other pumpkins laughed and made fun of him. They said he didn't look like them. He looked more like an orange eggplant. He was an UGLY PUMPKIN...and could never be a Jack-O-Lantern. No, they said, he could never be one of them. Never. But on this Halloween night...everything was about to change... The pumpkins in the pumpkin patch were about to learn that character was more important than looks. A read along illustrated story for ages 3-6. We head back to Haddonfield, Illinois for another encounter with Laurie, Annie, Lynda, Michael, Sheriff Brackett, and that wacky Dr. Loomis. That's right, we're taking another (much longer) look at one of Matt's favorite movies, John Carpenter's Halloween (1978). Untouchable classic this picture may be, but Laci was not a fan back in 2017. Surely time has softened her impenetrable heart... or has it? This film established so many hallmarks of the horror genre that are still used today. But there's so much more to unpack! How did Dr. Loomis not lose his medical license? Did Bob and Lynda put the Jack-O-Lantern next to the bed, or was it already there? And what does Michael Myers think about orgasm equity?
