In honor of all the Veterans lost, JR Weaver joins Jamie Brickhouse on Sober Podcast for Memorial Day weekend! JR is an Army Veteran, CEO & Founder of Recovery Revolution, and the Community Affairs Officer at Costa Rica Recovery. After leaving active duty from the Army to enroll in college, JR was left with the feeling of losing purpose, identity, and his support system. He tried moving to New York switching people, places, and things after having spent 7 years in college with nothing to show for it. His battle with alcoholism and addiction left his life spiraling out of control. Coming to a point of isolation, going in and out of jail, and eventually homelessness. While facing hard time in prison and felony charges, drug court gave JR the 2nd chance he needed. After finding recovery from his addiction, JR was able to truly turn his life around and give back to others! Sober Podcast works on defining recovery one story at a time. On October 4, 2016, the trajectory of Jeff's life changed with one phone call. Prior to that day, Jeff was living the American Dream. He had a great family, was a successful entrepreneur running a financial services firm in Iowa, and was seemingly coasting through life. The morning of October 4, 2016 Jeff received the phone call that is every parent's worst nightmare. His oldest son, Seth, had died from fentanyl poisoning. He was 23 years old. Jeff soon realized that he had two options. He could go down a road of anger and despair and become bitter, or he could use his situation as motivation to become better. He chose the latter. Jeff decided to take a step back from his career as a financial advisor and focus his attention toward making a difference. He became an advocate for bringing awareness to substance use and addiction in teens & young adults. He began speaking at high schools and community events, and joined the board of a local treatment facility that Seth spent time at before his death. In 2020, Jeff founded his own non-profit, Choices Network, Ltd. dedicated to educating kids, parents, teachers & coaches on the importance of making positive choices. That same year, he wrote his first book, “This One's For You: An Inspirational Journey Through Addiction, Death and Meaning” and started the Living Undeterred Project. Jeff is currently organizing the Living Undeterred Tour with the goal of building a network of contacts and resources to help develop alternative solutions to the mental health and addiction crises. For 20 years I was a functional addict and really did not mean for it to get as out-of-control as it did… since coming into recovery in 2015 I saw this was an opportunity to really be able to help other alcoholics and addicts who struggle with sustaining long-term sobriety. And so I believe I was divinely inspired to create, for the first time ever, a recovery apparel brand with a very distinctive branded label “StayStopped” a brand of clothing that would bring awareness to successful living as well as encouragement with a new connection to our communities and families. I had no idea the magnitude of the role that wrestling would play in my life when I first got on the mat as a skinny, freckled kid in Tigard, Oregon. After high school, I got caught up in the grips of addiction and unfortunately, it drove me to jail, prison, and eventually I was living on the street by age 34 and in a complete downward spiral. I woke up from the homeless shelter gym floor and decided I needed wrestling back in my life. I knew enough to understand that if I could restructure my life around the sport of wrestling, I might have a chance for a better life. So, at the ripe age of 37, I resumed training and went back to college with a goal to not only compete on the wrestling team—but to win. After a year of losses and brutalizing my body from the training, I set my sights on a national wrestling championship title. I chased that title for 10 years and never gave up hope, even when I felt defeated. Here we stand today almost 20 years since that gym floor at the homeless shelter, author of Be a Champion in Life, with an Emmy winning story on ESPN, 2016 National wrestling champion with almost 20 years of sobriety. How far I have come, how far you can go. www.beachampioninlife.com For more information about Recovery Revolution Live you can visit our Website or Facebook Page

My name is Houston Spore. I am forty-four years old. I am a recovering opioid addict, now almost seven years sober. My path to this point has not been in the traditional sense. When I got to Regions hospital they intubated me and subsequently I was on life support for 2 months. After I came off life support I remained in the hospital for another 3 weeks. I went to Meadow Creek treatment center in Pine City Minnesota last August. During my stay at Meadow Creek I had a huge spiritual Awakening. And my life is absolutely amazing now. I have 19 months of sobriety. I don't have to drink or use drugs to feel good anymore because I got God. I don't have to worry about things working out anymore because GOD GOT ME. I'm not depressed anymore because GOD GOT ME. I don't have to live in fear anymore because GOD GOT ME. I no longer have to worry about where I am going to sleep or eat every day because GOD GOT ME. CHARLES LEVOIR Creator | Host | Recovery Coach Professional (RCP) Our recovery stories don't just matter, they are very lifeblood of the recovery community. My name is Charlie LeVoir and I am a person in long term recovery from alcoholism and addiction since 2014. What that means to me is that I have not found it necessary to use alcohol or any other mood altering substances since 12/6/2014. Born and raised in the Twin Cities, Recovery for me began with a 12-Step program and fellowship and hearing other people's stories of Recovery in and out of the rooms of recovery is what first gave me hope that I too could recover and that I didn't have to do this alone any longer if I didn't want to. As a result of being transformed by the power people authentically and vulnerably sharing their recovery stories, I was inspired to create a way for others to do the same. Thus, The Way Out Podcast was born. I am the Creator, host and producer of The Way Out Podcast since its inception in 2016, where me and my co-host Jason Rudeen along with hundreds of others have Recovered Out Loud so that others might recover too. My sobriety and recovery podcast brings audiences sobriety power topics and powerful recovery stories to jump start their Sobriety and enhance their Recovery. One of the greatest gifts of having the honor and privilege of interviewing hundreds of people in long term recovery is I have benefited tremendously from the wide array of recovery pathways and programs embodied in the stories these amazing people share on The Way Out Podcast. Today I incorporate a variety of Recovery tools to sustain a meaningful and enduring Recovery. Without question I would have never pursued recovery coaching if it wasn't for the work I do as a Recovery Podcaster As a direct result, I am honored to hold the CCAR Recovery Coach Professional Certification and I am dedicated to continuing to grow in my understanding and abilities as a Recovery Coach so that others may also recover from substance user disorder. Steven McDonald is the author of “Thanks for Letting Me Share: Profound, helpful, funny, sad, quotes, quips, anecdotes, and suggestions from and for recovering alcoholics and addicts.” This book contains 368 quotes that I have heard from recovering addicts and alcoholics. They are profound, funny, cringe-worthy, memorable, and powerful. They will allow you to reflect, remember and reassess your recovery. Some of us came in, left, and came back. This book takes something from all of us and we continue to pray for those who haven't come in yet. Take what you want and leave the rest. "Thanks for Letting Me Share: Profound, helpful, funny, sad, quotes, quips, anecdotes, and suggestions from and for recovering alcoholics and addicts."

Hello I'm a 35 year old addict in long term recovery. I just celebrated 3 years in July. I'm married to my best friend Katie who is also in recovery. We both have our dream jobs. I continue to learn new things. I grew up with my grandmother. My mom was an addict and I didn't see her much until I was 18. My dad, I was told, died before I was born and then in 2019 I found out I was adopted and met my dad , sister, brother and huge family that lived 10 minutes away. I've dedicated my time to help others, possibly not going through what I did. I had a brain tumor at age 10 multiple severe injuries which led me further into my addiction. Now my life couldn't be better.

I'm Justin McPadden. My recovery date is 3-16-18. I was trapped for 23 years in a vicious cycle of my addiction. I thought I was just made like this and there wasn't any change that would fix me. All my past experiences was the way I was and everyone was to blame. Only when I surrendered and started taking a hard look at the real problem did things change. Thank God for that change. I started a group and non profit called The Hope Shot in Florida where do do exactly like Recovery Revolution and do podcasts weekly. It has gave me even more purpose and the ability to give back. I'm grateful for this life today. The Hope Shot

Randy is a person living in long term recovery and what that means to him is, he hasn't used drugs, alcohol, or any mood-altering substance since January 9, 2005. After receiving the life-saving gift of recovery, Randy completed his A.S. degree in addiction counseling and a B.A. in human services and worked as a full-time addiction counselor for two years at Eden House Recovery Services – the very same treatment facility where he was once a patient. A formerly incarcerated person sentenced to 87 months in prison as a first non-violent drug user, Randy is a nationally recognized advocate for recovery and justice reform. He served on the board of directors for the Minnesota Second Chance Coalition. There he was given the opportunity to testify during the 2015/2016 legislative session in front of several legislative committees during the drug sentencing reform hearings. Because of his testimony - and that of others - MN had the most significant change in drug sentencing in nearly three decades. He is grateful to know because of those sentencing guideline changes, approximately 700 less people will be incarcerated yearly because they have a treatable disease. He lives with his wife and cat in Golden Valley, MN. In March 2019 Randy decided to follow his passion and venture out on his own and started Bold North Recovery and Consulting. After a lifetime of resisting professional care and shying away from sharing his story, Johnny's curiosity flowered, and the healing slowly began. Armed with 10 years of clinical treatment, a psychology degree from the University of Central Florida, and a decade of peer support and public advocacy through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Johnny's youthful vigor for mental health has impacted millions of lives across the globe. Since his first keynote in 2011, Johnny's refreshingly vulnerable and candid perspective has attracted praise from hundreds of outlets, including Upworthy, CNN, and Forbes. Even when commanding a virtual stage or touring with his metal band, Prison, his infectious positivity and firsthand experience with multiple mental illnesses (ranging from bipolar disorder and PTSD to OCD and beyond) uniquely equip him to provide realistic, yet hopeful insight into the pains of hardship with authenticity, levity, and unconventional wit. My name is Brittany and I am an advocate, volunteer and a Family Recovery Coach for families who have loved ones with a substance use disorder. I live with my partner who is a person who is actively seeking treatment for an alcohol use disorder. I am a trained facilitator for a family support group called Invitation to change based on the book Beyond Addiction how science and kindness help people change. It's a program that uses science and evidence based research to help family members help their loved ones who may have an addiction, it is an alternative approach to the traditional al anon program. This program allows families to help a person with an addiction and supports both families and their loved ones. It steers clear of using such labels as a codependent and an enabler. This is a great stigma that families face who have a loved one with an addiction. My goal is to educate our communities in this new approach and help break that stigma that families and their loved ones face. People do recover and families can help. https://helpingfamilieshelp.com https://cmcffc.org CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) http://johnlehr.com

Travis Sackett is resilience personified. Having overcome an abusive childhood, Travis went to college to study criminal justice, hoping to become an agent for change. While fulfilling this role, he was jaded by severe corruption in the system. During this time, Travis sustained an injury while training, resulting in an opioid addiction that led him to a life of crime. Through the help of his canine companion, he pulled himself up and out of the mud and began living his life again. As a fully disabled individual, Travis refused to be held back by circumstances. He persevered and decided to share his story in his memoir My Life with Karma to increase empathy toward often-ignored populations that are forgotten or left without a voice.
