Welcome back for another Sunday addition to the recurring series “Take Me to Church”. In this series I focus on capturing the spiritual experience of going to church on Sunday in a podcast format without the restrictive structure found in most traditional churches. My aim is to encourage the principles of critical thinking and free thought while dealing with religious texts and stories. The lack of “rules” regarding what can and cannot be talked about or believe in is the primary point of these weekly episodes. I want to provide anyone who is curious an opportunity to engage with religious texts and concepts without the preconceived notions which force certain interpretations on prospective believers. Another goal with this show is to more fully unify  religions from different traditions through engaging with them in the same space. Join me every Sunday for the special series “Take Me to Church”, enjoy! Lots of Love

Well that was exciting! With the 2024 presidential election results settled I am struck by a lingering feeling. The excitement of seeing populism flourish is overwhelming but there is another feeling hiding underneath the surface, a subtle heaviness that lingers after the celebration ceases. In this episode I attempt to analyse this feeling in myself and enunciate the reason it is there. Later in the show I break down the flaws inside the modern liberal political movement and attempt to speak directly to anyone who considers themselves liberal politically, pleading to rationality and the development of faith through loss. Losing someone you love is one the great terrors of life. We often avoid thinking about the day when we will have to say goodbye. That is why it is important to let yourself feel when that day does come because through the grieving process a truth of the universe is revealed. The conservation of energy, the changing of one form to the next is expressed in subtle ways that go unnoticed when we numb ourselves. Don't numb yourself!  Switching gears rather abruptly I talk about the upcoming 2024 election and its ramifications. The choice has never been so stark, yet what that choice is, remains obscured for many. I attempt to annunciate it clearly for myself and anyone else who listens. God Bless America! Lots of Love

Welcome back for a heavy hitting episode! As the world changes people are also changing. It seems like the scandals just keep coming and that specific spotlight seems to have landed on P-Diddy and his entourage. I cover this story to start off the episode as I have wanted to speak directly about the abuse that has been uncovered for a while now. It is stories like these that demonstrate the unfortunate prevalence of abusive behavior in our society. This episode is on the topic of trauma and contains several videos featuring Theo Von, Father Mari Mari Emanuel and Dr. Jordan Peterson. Each video was chosen intuitively to align with the energy of the episode with the purpose of identifying the ways in which we experience trauma as well as how to approach healing those wounds. Later in the episode I share one of my own traumas with the audience and describe how I have approached healing those wounds myself. If you feel drawn to this episode, it is for a reason. In this episode, we explore the role of dialectics in understanding existence, inspired by the Dao De Jing and the life of Gao Yaojie. We examine the character '则' (zé) from Laozi's era, its significance in conveying dialectical ideas, and its modern-day implications. Delving into Laozi's teachings, such as "bending to remain unbroken," we draw parallels with other philosophical traditions and offer insights into applying these ancient concepts in today's world.

Truth Tribe with Douglas Groothuis

I.    Truth and Religion  A.    Framing the great debate on religion and spiritualityTaking objective truth seriously in a pluralistic, postmodern setting B.    The appeal of the oneness claim (all religions teach basically the same thing): religious strife is eliminated. But this must be logically tested. II.    What are Truth Claims in Religion? A.     Defining the nature of truth: that which corresponds to  objective reality. For more on this, see Douglas Groothuis, Truth Decay (InterVarsity Press, 2000), chapter four. B.    Defining a truth-claim: a statement that claims to describe objective reality C.    The logic of truth-claims—rules of the intellectual system, rational analysis 1.    The law of noncontradiction: A is not non-A (contradictory statements cannot both be true; nothing possesses contradictory properties) 2.    Examples of the law of noncontradiction in religious  truth-claims a.    Buddha cannot be enlightened and not enlightened at the same time; the claim is that he became enlightened. b.    Jesus cannot be the Christ (Messiah) and not be the Christ (Messiah). The claim is he always was the Messiah. c.    If what Buddha affirms about reality contradicts what Jesus affirms about reality, then both Buddha's and Jesus' view of reality cannot be true. They could both be false if some other worldview is true. A.    This fundamental law of logic is a necessary assumption for all rational discourse. III.    Similarities Between Jesus and Buddha A.    Both are world-historical founders of major religions B.    Their lives are enshrined in sacred texts C.    Both exhibited profound compassion and gathered followers D.    Both emphasized the need to find enduring peace E.    Both taught basic ethical teachings on love and respect, versions of the Golden Rule IV.     Jesus and Buddha: Key Differences of Worldview A.    Do two major religions agree on core issues or disagree?  If they disagree, they cannot be one in essence; cannot both true B.    Documents on Jesus and Buddha 1.    Buddha: Large body of texts far removed in history from life of Buddha. Miracles are not central to the message (dharma) of Buddha. 2.    Jesus: Four Gospels (and the rest of the New Testament) are written a few decades after Jesus' time on earth by eyewitnesses or those who consulted them. Miracles are central to the message of Jesus. See Douglas Groothuis, On Jesus, chapter two. C.    The worldview of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha (ca. 566-486 BCE) 1.    Ultimate reality or the sacred—atheistic or agnostic on God; but nirvana exists 2.    The human condition—suffering is due to craving and ignorance 3.    Spiritual liberation/salvation a.    “Four noble truths”—freedom from craving through insight into the cause of suffering  1.    Life is suffering2.    Suffering is caused by craving3.    The cessation of craving leads to liberation4.    The way of liberation is through the Eightfold path b.    The Eightfold path—wisdom, ethical conduct, mental discipline c.    The afterlife: reincarnation/karma or nirvana (release from reincarnation) D.    The worldview of Jesus, the Christ (Messiah) 1.    Ultimate reality—a personal and moral Creator God (Matthew 22:37-39) 2.    Human condition—image bearers of God estranged from God (Mark 7:21-23; See Romans 3:14-26 also) 3.    Spiritual liberation/salvation a.    Repentance; turning from self-centeredness (sin) to God's authority (Matthew 4:1: Luke 24:45-47) b.    Belief and trust in Jesus himself for eternal life (John    1:12-13; 3:16; 14:6; Romans 10:9). You have to do something with Jesus c.    The redemptive power of the suffering death (Cross) of   Jesus Christ (Matthew 20:28; 25-28; Romans 5:6-8) 4.    The afterlife: Either fellowship with God and the redeemed or eternal punishment (Matthew 25:31-46) E.    Two momentous lives compared    1.    Buddha—a sage, teacher, and reformer. Sought          enlightenment through knowledge and experience;         shared this with others 2.    Jesus—claimed to be God in human form (unrepeatable) a.    Never sought enlightenment, but began ministry in power and confidence (Matthew 4) b.    Offered to provide forgiveness for sin against a holy God (Mark 2:1-12; John 3:16-18) c.    Claimed to be one with a personal God (John 8:58; John 10:22-31) IV.    Conclusion: Between Jesus and Buddha— Gospel or Dharma? A.    Buddhism and Christianity cannot both be true; they contradict each other on crucial matters of worldview and spirituality: A cannot be non-A (the law of noncontradiction) B.    Objective truth and spiritual reality should be the overriding concern for spiritual seekers C.    Final reflection on suffering and hope (crucial test for any worldview) 1.    Buddha: transcend suffering through mental discipline and dehumanization (nirvana) 2.    Jesus: embrace redemptive suffering because of the fallen nature of the world. Jesus' own suffering on the Cross provides the way of liberation for individuals. a.    Jesus and the death of Lazarus (John 11) b.    Jesus on the Cross: “My God, my God. Why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34) c.    Resurrection of the body and the afterlife (1 Corinthians 15) D.    Jesus offers meaning in suffering and purpose in life through his life, death, and resurrection Recommended Reading 1.    Douglas Groothuis, On Jesus. What does it tell us about the world that individuals can get glimpses of the future (and the past)?Psi puzzles us in many ways, muddling our ordinary notions of individuality, personality, and the nature of mind in general. In 2003, Bob started attending the Sursem or ‘Survival Seminar' project at Essalen and became more actively involved with the leading researchers in Parapsychology. In 2021 he contributed a chapter on Precognition to Consciousness Unbound (Kelly and Marshall). As we talk, Bob offers a number of case histories of people having precognitive dreams and of laboratory research on Psi. Is there a scientific explanation for such phenomena, I asked. Listen to his answer.Bob believes that freedom is real, that our human choices matter, and that we have barely scratched the surface of our human potential. He is convinced that there is some kind of life after death though what form it takes he does not know.My guest next week will be Gerard D. C. Kuiken Ph.D., author of Eastern Thought and  The Shiva Sutra of Vasugupta: Sanskrit and English Translation. 2019. At 1st glance, it would seem that Jews and Hindus have very little in common. Judaism is known as one of "the great monotheistic religions of the world." How can there be much to talk about with a religion that purportedly has 330,000,000 gods & goddesses? Well, it seems that besides the fact that some of the most devout Hindus have been Jews, there really is much philosophically that binds these seemingly opposite traditions. In her new book "From Jerusalem to Delhi Through Persia" author Susan Adelman provides a very detailed analysis of the attraction of Jews to Eastern Thought, as well as the solid relationship between Israel and India. You will enjoy this one. So listen. I won't take no for an answer!

In the middle of the 20th century, the combination of scientific brilliance and a globe-spanning war produced weapons so powerful that a single bomb could flatten an entire city. The origin of this technology takes us back into history, to Leo Szilard's first conception of a nuclear chain reaction, and even further back, when scientists weren't sure whether atoms even existed. Once atoms, and all their various parts, were discovered, great scientists like Ernest Rutherford, JJ Thompson, Niels Bohr, and Albert Einstein peeled back layers of the mysteries of the atomic and subatomic realm to reveal the immense energy that lies within. The Atomic Bomb podcast describes the history leading to the discovery of the atomic bomb, as well as its role in World War 2. They’ve just become Christians—and the battle explodes! Plunged immediately after their baptism into a fiery spiritual storm, Loren and Eve Montcrest face the vicious assaults of the Arcane Institute and their Harmony society as its leaders pull out all stops in the battle to win back or destroy their old disciples. At the same time, the couple must struggle with their sinful natures, their fallen world, and continual demonic deceptions and assaults.  God has placed them under the wise care of the head of the secret underground church, Alexander Renkin. Yet Alexander is in a precarious position himself as the nominal head of the local KINDness Church, an arm of Harmony. Alexander wonders how much will they be willing to sacrifice and to suffer for their new faith when the deeper trials come. When a mighty move of the Holy Spirit disrupts their pagan household, Loren and the now-pregnant Eve must abandon everything and flee to a secret sanctuary—a sanctuary they quickly learn is not safe at all. I remember when I read the first book by Rich and Linda, how thrilled I was to have discovered quite by accident! Now, I get to showcase the second book that follow this couple. India is a vast country where humans arrived from Africa no later than fifty five thousand years ago. This long time span of human occupation has given the nation its many distinct religions and tribes. The country boasts to be the spiritual home of many of the world's prominent religions - hinduism, sikhism, and buddhism to name some. This week, however, we tell the tales of some of the lesser known beliefs of the indigenous tribes of the country. The first is the creation myth of the Birhor of Central and Eastern India. It is followed by the story of the Santhals, the largest of the ethnic Munda tribes that are native to Eastern India and Bangladesh, with a sizable population in Nepal and Bhutan as well. We then speak of the Garo people, who are an indigenous Tibetan-Burman ethnic group found in the northeastern states of the country. The last tale is of the Gond or Gondi, one of the largest tribal groups of India, spreading over many states or provinces of India. These are their stories - the tales of some of the indigenous and native tribes of the ancient land of India. I hope you enjoy the stories. If you do, please leave a rating and feedback. The ancient Greeks lived in many lands around the Mediterranean Sea, from Turkey to the south of France. They had close contacts with other peoples such as the Egyptians, Syrians and Persians. The Greeks lived in separate city-states, but shared the same language and religious beliefs. The Greek culture and civilization can be dated back to the Bronze Age (around 3200 – 1100 B.C.E.). In this period, a number of cultures flourished on the islands of the Cyclades, in Crete and on the Greek mainland. They were mainly farmers, but trade across the sea, particularly in raw materials such as obsidian (volcanic glass) and metals, was growing. Mycenaean culture flourished on the Greek mainland in the Late Bronze Age, from about 1600 to 1100 B.C.E. The name comes from the site of Mycenae, where the culture was first recognized after the excavations in 1876 of Heinrich Schliemann. The Mycenaean period of the later Greek Bronze Age was viewed by the Greeks as the “age of heroes” and perhaps provides the historical background to many of the stories told in later Greek mythology, including Homer’s epics. Objects and artworks from this time are found throughout mainland Greece and the Greek islands. Distinctive Mycenaean pottery was distributed widely across the eastern Mediterranean. These show the beginnings of Greek mythology being used to decorate works of art. They come from about the same time that the epics of Homer were reaching the form in which we inherit them, as the earliest Greek literature. The collapse of Mycenaean civilization around 1100 B.C.E. brought about a period of isolation known as the Dark Age. But by around 800 B.C.E. the revival had begun as trade with the wider world increased, arts, crafts and writing re-emerged and city-states (poleis) developed. It was around this time that Hesoid wrote the poem "Theogony" - the geneology of the birth of gods. Hesiod's Theogony was a large-scale synthesis of a vast variety of local Greek traditions concerning the gods, organize as a narrative that tells how they came to be and how they established permanent control over the cosmos. It was the first known Greek mythical cosmogony. Our tale today is the very same that was propounded by Hesoid over 2800 years ago. I hope you enjoy the story. Hi there! Welcome to Stories That Made Us. In this episode, we explore the creation myths of two Native American Tribes, the Arikara and the Arapaho. The Arikara are semi-sedentary agricultural people of North America. They are also known as Sahnish, Arikaree, or Hundi, are a tribe of Native Americans who've traditionally lived in North Dakota. The peoples of this tribe speak a Caddoan language, quite similar to the Skidi-Pawnee tribe, with whom the Arikara were once closely associated. After many conflicts with other tribes and several major migrations, the Arikara settled with the Mandans and other native Americans in South Dakota. It is said that the term Arikara comes from the word Ariki, which means horn. The story goes that the Arikara once used bones to hold up their hair-like horns. The Arapaho have historically lived in Wyoming and Colorado in the United States. Arapaho is a name that was given to the tribe by the Europeans. They natives refer to their own selves as Hinono'eino or Inun-ina ("our people" or "people of our own kind"). The Arapaho had extensive trade relations with many other tribes, especially the Cheyenne, Lakota, Dakota, Caddo, Wichita, and Comanche. This episode is their tales of our creation! This episode continues our focus on creation myths. Today's stories are of the Native American tribes of the Wabanaki Confederacy, the Anishinaabe, and the Blackfoot and Bloods. All these tribes could be classified under the broader context of Algonquin tribes. The first story is of the Wabanaki. It is not a tribe, but a confederacy that consists of five principal nations. These nations occupy areas of Maine in the United States. In Canada, they reside in Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Quebec. The second story tells tales of the Anishinaabe. These people live in the Great Lakes area of the United States and Canada. The word Anishinaabe means "the people." Their creation myth tells a tale of a broken world. One that was destroyed and then recreated by the Kitchi-Manitou - the Great Spirit. He did this with the help of Nanaboozhoo. Our final story is of the Blackfoot and Blood tribes. They are a part of the three confederated Algonquian groups. They live in Alberta, Canada and Montana, United States. So he started his way with the martial arts Judo and Tae-Kwon-Do and soon found his home in the Chinese martial arts, which are all too often summarized under the generic terms "Kung Fu" or "Wushu". His path started in the Chinese martial arts school, Bailung. Over the years, the Bailung school became the Zhenwu Osnabrück eV association. Due to the open, tolerant and curious attitude of his teacher, Nassem got to know well-known and extremely capable martial arts teachers from various martial arts and was able to learn from them in part. Against the background of these experiences and encounters, Nassem is committed to developing not only physical abilities and skills, but also mental states, attitudes and philosophy.“Martial arts is a way. You step into it looking for something that you may not always be able to put into words. You look for answers to questions or find questions that are based on answers. You also look for the self and strive for a better self. “ Nassem Raufi So it happened that Nassem could no longer recognize his way in Germany and went to China. One of the countries that can be described as a source of martial arts.In China he met his current teacher and Shifu, Yu Guang De, without effort, without searching, so more likely by accident or fate.He practices a rare martial art that does without the movement sequences (forms) that are otherwise typical in Chinese styles and focuses on essence, skills and applicability. Today’s episode features track coach and acupuncture student, Sam Wuest.  Sam is finishing his acupuncture degree at New England School of Acupuncture and is a track and field coach at Tufts University. Sam is a former NCAA DI athlete, and holds multiple certifications in strength and conditioning and track and field.  Sam has worked with a diverse array of athletes and has also studied under Ukranian Olympic coach, Alex Ponomarenko.  He coached the recent NCAA DIII high jump champion in the 2018 indoor season, Stefan Duvivier who jumped 2.20m. Sam has blended Western sport performance with Eastern practices, such as acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Zen Meditation, qi gong and tai chi.  When it comes to Sam’s coaching philosophy, as well as this podcast in general, the goal is always to find a blend of ideas from different ends of the spectrum, from the quantitative, data-based realms, to the qualitative and intuitive end.  To this end, this episode is largely about Sam’s outside the box thinking in coaching and recovery.  From his incorporation of multiple planes into basic track and field drills, to feel-based integration of Frans Bosch style stick drills, to avoiding the visual bias in athlete feedback via iPhones and iPads, Sam has a coaching style that is holistic and effective. Sam also has connected training with common concepts in Chinese medicine, including his thoughts on recovery modalities, as well as linking of the seasons and human response into our own models and thoughts on training organization (noting the similarities observed in the practices of Dr. Yuri Verkhoshansky).  Another coach who has done just this was the late Charles Poliquin, an absolute legend in this field.  We’ll get into these topics and more on a show today that is certain to expand your perspective on training athletes. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points Ways to incorporate and create awareness of rotational mechanics in sport movement The faults of a “brace” oriented core movement model in athletics Sam’s utilization of various sensory feedback drills in sprinting How Sam utilizes rhythm and timing in his programming and why we tend to be “over-visual” in how we train and coach athletes Sam’s utilization of recovery modalities Things Chinese medicine has taught Sam about training and recovery Ideas on periodization and training organization based off of seasonal effects on athletes from a holistic perspective “If you watch the best sprinters in the world, they are not going straight forward and back, there is a rotational element” “There are a whole lot of extensions going on when you push off the ground, and one of them is that lateral plane, and if you aren’t not getting that, you are operating with shorter legs than you need to” “The same still frames that you got from USATF level whatever back in the 90’s is still true, you have to make sure that what happens in between (tri-planar actions) we really optimize” “There are only so many KPI’s that you can show statically.  There are other KPI’s that are going on that you can’t show (on a single frame) because they are dynamic, they are a motion” “If you are holding a stick on your shoulders, you know where your shoulders are, you know where their hips are” “Sometimes in order to get an athlete to change what they need to do, you need to put them in an environment where that bad habit no longer works, and they have to feel that” “I almost never do stick (on the back) drills, and (finish) on a stick drill….. I’ll have the kids drop halfway through” “If your timing is off, there is no chance you are going to hit (the position you want)” “If you are not hitting a rhythm when you jump, your position will be off” “I spent a whole year last year,

He has participated in several group and solo shows in galleries, restaurants and coffee shops.   “I deal with color on an intuitive level. I pick colors in the moment with a digital pallet of infinite color choices. My tools lend to an “in the moment”  flow.  With digital art I will have a color appear in my head first and then I add it to the design. I often combine unusual colors that create a distinct vibration and energy to the design.  The same is true for my mixed media work.  My studio has paint tubes scattered all over my work space. The piece I'm working on will in a way  “call”  to the color that needs to be added next.” https://dougbale.bigcartel.com/ https://society6.com/dougbale You can follow Doug's art on Instagram: @dougbale     Paul Krauss MA LPC is the Clinical Director of Health for Life Grand Rapids, home of The Trauma-Informed Counseling Center of Grand Rapids. In this week’s show our guest is Dr. Jay Michaelson author of Evolving Dharma: Meditation, Buddhism, and the Next Generation of Enlightenment. The topic of our program is the relationship between American Jews and Buddhism. We also discussed buddhist principles and what different spiritualities have in common. Dr. Jay Michaelson is the author of six books and over three hundred articles on religion, sexuality, law, and contemplative practice. He is a columnist for The Daily Beast and the Forward newspaper, and is a frequent commentator on NPR, MSNBC, and online. In his ‘other’ career, Jay is an affiliated assistant professor at Chicago Theological Seminary, teaches meditation in Jewish and Theravadan Buddhist lineages, and holds nondenominational rabbinic ordination. During the interview he shares his knowledge about the different types of Buddhism that are popular with American audiences. In the last couple of decades meditation and yoga have become more acceptable even among conservative and some traditional Jews. Many books have been written on the subject such as ” The Jew and The Lotus” by Rodger Kamenetz and “Jewish Dharma” by Brenda Shoshana. I see the relationship between Jews and Buddhism as a great opportunity for interfaith dialogue, something that it has been limited so far. There are many concepts in Buddhism that can be compared to Western forms of worship such as zazen (meditation), koan(story telling), midfulness, nondoing, silence and renunciation. Dr. Michaelson defines Dharma as wisdom, compassion and action. We also discussed traditional Kabbalah and how the three Abrahamic faiths have a mystical component that at time gets ignored. Many progressive Jews relate mystical Judaism to Eastern Thought, however he sees this as disingenuous at times. Through the program Dr. Michaelson, who is also a rabbi, shares his views of religious observance and Jewish practice; especially as mindful meditation has influenced the way American Jews relate to their personal spirituality.
