Content warning: Discussions of attempted sexual assault. Reprehensible and unrepentant, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA trades in the same extensive violence and fragility-masked-by-corruption that became a trademark of director Sam Peckinpah. Running a seedy bar in Mexico City, small-time lowlife Bennie sees a chance to elevate himself above his station when the titular job lands in his lap. His white-collar employers give him just enough rope to hang himself – and his partner, Elita – as they travel the Mexican countryside to deliver the head of a dead man to the crime boss he crossed. In this episode, we discuss seeing ALFREDO GARCIA at the Trylon after so long; Bennie's tenuous, poisonous drive to assert himself over the people and land around him; and the movie's bizarre, humorous, rage-addled final act. It turns out there's no fence-sitting at the end of the Wild West. You wouldn't call THE WILD BUNCH particularly swashbuckling, but there's a sort of uncomfortable excitement to its bandolier antics. A band of outlaws eyes one last prize near the US/Mexico border in 1913. The sociopolitical tumult of the place, and the rapid advance of the punitive system of capital at the time, threaten to derail their plans until a Mexican general hires them to steal guns from a moving train. No matter which side of the border they're on, the Wild Bunch feel their God-given right to subvert systems of power slipping with each gold piece snatched and each bullet dodged. Listen in for our thoughts on the movie that made Sam Peckinpah's career and changed how people thought of violence in movies!
After ignoring a warning buoy to stay away, Captain Kirk and his landing party are punished for violating Melkotian space by being made to appear as the Clanton gang in a facade of Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881. According to history, the "Clantons" -- in this case, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty and Chekov -- will meet their fate later that day at the OK Corral in a gunfight with the Earps and Doc Holliday. Captain Kirk tries everything he can to avoid the showdown and prove his peaceful intentions, but history cannot be changed -- or can it? Despite all of the cards stacked against it (and there were many), Season 3 of "Star Trek" got off to a pretty terrific start -- at least, in terms of its production order -- with "Spectre of the Gun," superbly written by the always-reliable Gene L. Coon (under his pseudonym "Lee Cronin"). While the end result is basically a rehash of the first season classic "Arena" (also written by Coon), "Spectre of the Gun" ultimately succeeds as one of the third season's finest episodes, thanks to a clever and surreal setting, intense direction by Vincent McEveety, a stellar score composed by Jerry Fielding and strong performances from the entire cast. Boo! It’s a word designed to scare… or to heckle a comedian. Somehow both definitions apply this week as Craig tackles his ultimate fear by watching two notoriously awful Twilight Zone comedies (“Mr. Bevis” and “Cavender is Coming”), and honestly, what’s more terrifying than that? It’s a Hallowe’en episode with a smile. Oh wait, that’s not a smile…. that’s a frozen mask of abject terror. Boo! Also talked about: what they've watched as of late (including the new MST3K), and they read a couple of listener comments. NOTE: there are a few audio glitches in this due to Skype being a prick.
The Outlaw Josey Wales is the result of Clint Eastwood's former collaboration with director Sergio Leone on "The Man with No Name Trilogy", a tender Western with an ensemble cast and a non-traditional ending. The film was the fifth one directed by Eastwood and was the beginning of his trail-blazing career which continues to this day with films like American Sniper and Jersey Boys. Jerry Fielding received an Oscar nomination for his score in The Outlaw Josey Wales. The film is currently widely available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Have a question or comment for the host? Jerry Fielding. The name Jerry Fielding doesn't readily spring to mind when asked to name famous composers of film scores, yet he is a composer with a long pedigree in the industry. Having penned a large number of film scores from the 1960s onwards, Fielding composed the music for two episodes of Star Trek in 1966—both now iconic—"Spectre of the Gun" and "The Trouble with Tribbles." In this episode of Melodic Treks we take a look at Jerry and his life, including his forced exile from Hollywood and the early radio plays, including the now famous War of the Worlds adaptation by Orson Welles, from which he drew inspiration. We also talk about his extraordinary life and struggle to create a style all his own, as well as his collaboration with a diverse group of producers and directors that included Groucho Marx, Michael Winner, and Clint Eastwood. The Hardy Family - Andy Hardy was a fictional character played by Mickey Rooney in an extremely successful MGM film series from 1937 to 1958. Spanning over 20 years, the 16 movies were based on characters in the play Skidding by Aurania Rouverol. The initial Hardy film, A Family Affair (1937), was made before a series was contemplated. It featured Lionel Barrymore as Judge Hardy and Spring Byington as Mrs. Hardy, Andy's parents, and Margaret Marquis as Andy's on-again-off-again sweetheart, Polly Benedict. But when the series was launched, most of the cast was changed, with the notable exceptions of Rooney and Sara Haden as his Aunt Milly. The series entries starred Lewis Stone as Judge Hardy, Fay Holden as Mrs. Hardy, Cecilia Parker as Andy's older sister Marian Hardy, and Ann Rutherford as Polly. Most of the movies were set in the Hardys' fictional hometown of Carvel, located in Idaho in the original play but described in the films as being in the Midwest. All of the films were sentimental comedies celebrating ordinary American life. The people in Carvel, by and large, were pious, patriotic, generous and tolerant. The town represented movie mogul Louis B. Mayer's idealized vision of his adopted country. Some writers have compared Carvel to Mayberry, the setting of The Andy Griffith Show a generation later.
