On today's show, it's all NBA, all the time. With only 20 something games remaining post All-Star Break, there's still a lot to be decided in the Playoff seedings, particularly in the West, and we're starting to see the urgency of the situation related on the court, as player intensity picks up. An age old criticism of the Association is that the regular season doesn't mean anything, that the players don't try hard until the Playoffs, and while this argument is too nuanced for me to fully agree, I will concede that while pre All-Star is a light jog and the All-Star Game itself was a meandering walk in the park, teams are now running towards the Playoffs and will be in a full sprint throughout the postseason. So I'll accept that there were a decent number of garbage games for 75% of the season, but to counter, I'll document the past week of action where every day we had a close, high leverage and highly entertaining NBA game to enjoy, games with Playoff implications, and with players going all out. And in that spirit, we have a ton to cover today, including this year's teams who fit under Phil Jackson's 40 wins before 20 losses rule, why I think an Eastern Conference team will be champ this year, a critical analysis of all of Jokic's MVP cases, Tatum's MVP decline, four guys on pace for the rare 20 point and 10 assist season, and of course, some Warriors talk. So sit back, the NBA is headed full speed into the stretch drive and we're breaking down how it's all unfolding, next on the Roundup Podcast so let's get rolling . . .
The Nuggets get a massive OT win over the Clippers and Nikola Jokic out-duels Kawhi Leonard down the stretch. In the latest edition of the Nuggets Ink podcast, Mike Singer and Matt Schubert check in with Denver closing in on one of the top four seeds in the Western Conference playoffs. Among the topics discussed: + Another week has produced another injury in the Denver backcourt. Why do the Basketball Gods hate the Nuggets? How will this affect rotations going forward? What are potential scenarios for Denver's backcourt come playoff time? + How will things shake out in the front court between Paul Millsap, JaMychal Green and JaVale McGee? Are there enough minutes to go around? Which one of those players is sitting come playoff time? + Speaking of the playoffs, who are the Nuggets hoping to see in the first round between the L.A. Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Portland Trail Blazers? + Is Aaron Gordon doing enough offensively? Is it time for him to start asserting himself more on the offensive end of the floor? Or would that take away from him defensive contributions? + Michael Porter Jr. has taken things up a notch in the wake of Jamal Murray's season-ending ACL tear. Just how much ceiling does MPJ have left? How much are all of those teams who passed on him in the 2018 NBA draft regretting not snatching him up when they had a chance? Is it possible MPJ will be the Nuggets' No. 2 option when Murray returns next season? + Is there any way someone other than Nikola Jokic is named MVP this season? Is the award already in the bag with just two weeks to go in the regular season?
On today's show, we don't have NFL Draft takeaways as much as we have gut feelings, we're gonna have to see these guys play before we name them to the All Pro teams, but one thing we all agree on is that the Round 1 experience was absolutely fascinating to watch unfold in real time. Plus, Aaron Rodgers wants out of GB and Gaber is ready to drive him to the airport. And, as the NBA regular season comes down to the last 2 weeks, some big name stars are back from injuries, but some results have been underwhelming. Then there's the Nuggets, thriving despite the absence of key players; the Knicks are on fire; the Wizards and the Pelicans are trying to sneak into the Play-In, all this and much, much more. And let's not forget my Giants, battling the Dodgers and Padres to sit in first place in the NL West. So sit back, the NBA regular season is winding down as the Playoffs approach, MLB is just getting going, the NFL Draft eclipses it all and we're breaking down how it's all unfolding, next on the Roundup Podcast, so let's get rolling . . . ย 10:20 - All Around the NFL Draft 22:18 - Aaron Rodgers' Draft Day bombshell 32:20 - All Around the NBA: Bucks vs Nets 37:14 - Knicks hype; Hawks on the rise; Russ and the Wizards 53:45 - Jazz & Suns dominating in relative obscurity; Booker vs CP3 as Suns team MVP 1:00:21 - Nuggets success without Murray; Jokic's MVP 1:04:55 - Lakers/Blazers/Mavs logjam for the 5/6 seeds; AD's shortcomings 1:12:35 - Clippers upgrades for Playoffs 1:14:55 - Obligatory Steph appreciation 1:22:34 - All Around MLB: SF Giants and the NL West
