Moving undocumented men from hotels into towns, villages and military camps across Britain does not solve the crisis. It merely spreads the risk, spreads the fear and spreads the anger. It is not racist to demand secure borders. It is not unreasonable to demand identification. And it is not "far right" to say that entering Britain illegally without documents or a verified identity must have serious consequences. Simply uttering the words "I am seeking asylum" cannot be treated as a magic password granting entry into Britain, years of taxpayer-funded accommodation and endless appeals. The solution is simple: DETER. DETAIN. DECIDE. DEPORT. Anyone arriving illegally without a verified identity should be placed in a secure, locked and properly controlled centre while we establish who they are and decide their claim. If the claim is accepted, they enter through the proper legal process. If it fails, they are deported—immediately. No hotel. No disappearing act. No endless legal merry-go-round. Britain's first duty is not to illegal arrivals, activist lawyers or Burnham's hand-wringing liberal friends. The first duty of any government is the safety and security of the British people. Piddington's vote may be symbolic, but the fury behind it is real. People are sick of being ignored, insulted and ordered to accept decisions imposed upon their communities without meaningful consent. Burnham needs to wake up. If politicians continue dismissing legitimate fears and forcing this failed policy upon unwilling communities, they will drive tensions through the roof. Stop spreading the problem. Stop the boats. Instead of asking why ordinary British people are so bloody angry, they reach for the insults — "thugs", "intimidating", the usual establishment rubbish designed to shut down debate. Well, I've got a message for Burnham tonight: WE ARE NOT THUGS. WE ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. START LISTENING TO THE PEOPLE WHO PAY YOUR WAGES! And here's the fact they can't brush aside: THERE WERE NO ARRESTS LAST NIGHT. If the police have evidence that an individual committed an offence, investigate them and deal with them. Simple. Fast-forward a few weeks and Healey is back around the Cabinet table — this time as Chancellor of the Exchequer. And what happens to that great principle now HE controls the purse strings? Suddenly the 3% target can wait. You couldn't make it up! Was his resignation really about Britain's national security — or was it another calculated move up the greasy political pole? We started talking about the horrific A66 crash that killed PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough. Two police officers went to work to protect the public and never came home. Yet Labour MP and Home Office minister Anna Turley offered condolences to all SEVEN families — including the families of the five men in the car that had been pursued by police before travelling the WRONG WAY down the A66 and smashing into the officers' vehicle. What the hell has happened to this country? Then my nurse told me something that made my blood run cold. She is frightened that a man who attacked her is being released under the early-release scheme. Think about that. She goes to work. She looks after patients. She raises her children. She pays her taxes. She obeys the law. And SHE is frightened because the system is releasing the man who attacked her. Then we talked about the Channel, illegal immigration and public concern about serious sexual offences committed by some migrants. And here's my question for the Government: Why won't you give us the fullest possible figures on the ethnicity and immigration status of sexual offenders? Publish the data. ALL OF IT. Let the British people see the facts and make up their own minds. What are you frightened the figures might show? Then my nurse summed up the mood of this country in one devastating sentence: "WHY DO I BOTHER?" Why bother getting up and going to work? Why bother getting your kids to school? Why bother paying your taxes? Why bother obeying the law? Why bother doing the right thing when you increasingly feel that law-abiding people come LAST? That is what politicians need to understand. The Home Office has produced a nine-page guide for asylum seekers explaining that rape is illegal, women have equal rights, sexual consent matters, domestic abuse is illegal and you cannot have sex with children under 16. Seriously?! If the Government believes some people arriving in Britain need to be TOLD these things, isn't that itself a massive warning sign? And what exactly is a pamphlet supposed to achieve? This feels like the ultimate case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. Instead of another leaflet, another poster and another Government initiative, why aren't we having the much bigger debate about who is entering Britain, how they are vetted, where they are housed and what happens when they commit serious crimes? There have been horrific cases involving individual asylum seekers convicted of sexual offences. Those crimes have real victims — women and children whose suffering isn't remotely funny. That's why this becomes a dark, dark comedy rather than something we can simply laugh about.  For years, people raising legitimate questions about young undocumented men being accommodated in hotels, HMOs and other facilities have sometimes felt dismissed as racists or bigots. BURNHAM'S DELIBERATELY MISSING THE POINT! We're being encouraged to argue about WHERE illegal migrants should be housed. Cities? Towns? Rural communities? Hotels? Camps? But I'm asking something much more fundamental: WHY ARE THEY STILL COMING ACROSS THE CHANNEL IN THE FIRST PLACE?  Successive governments have failed to control Britain's borders — and now ordinary communities are effectively being told they have to "do their bit" and accept the consequences. No! POLITICIANS NEED TO DO THEIR BIT. Secure the border. Stop the boats. Process claims rapidly. Remove people who have no legal right to remain. And create a system that actually deters illegal crossings rather than endlessly managing them after they've happened. That's why I believe Burnham is deliberately missing the point. By turning today's argument into a row about whether migrants should be moved from cities into rural areas, the debate shifts away from the enormous political failure at the heart of this crisis: BRITAIN HAS LOST CONTROL OF ITS BORDERS.  And before somebody inevitably starts screaming "racist" or "far-right", let's be absolutely clear. Wanting secure borders isn't racist. Wanting immigration laws enforced isn't racist. Wanting failed asylum seekers removed isn't racist. And believing governments should plan properly instead of constantly firefighting crises isn't extremist.  The same principle applies to our prisons. We don't want dangerous prisoners released early simply because politicians failed to provide enough prison places. When the controversy involves men convicted over the killing of PC Andrew Harper, the public understandably wants to know why the system reached this position. Governments know roughly how many prisoners they have. They know roughly how many people are entering the asylum system. SO PLAN AHEAD! BUILD THE CAPACITY! CONTROL THE BORDER! And then, to cap it all, Burnham is reportedly calling a COBRA meeting over the hot weather. IT'S AUGUST! Where's that emergency mentality over the Channel? Where's the COBRA-level urgency over prison capacity? Where's the detailed plan to stop illegal crossings rather than simply deciding where people should be housed once they're here? Take the disgraceful situation surrounding PC Andrew Harper's killers. After massive public anger, Burnham now says he is "increasingly confident" they can be prevented from being released early. Good. I hope he succeeds. BUT WHY DID WE GET INTO THIS POSITION IN THE FIRST PLACE? Why weren't killers like these excluded from the early-release scheme from day one? Why has it taken outrage from the Harper family, the police and hundreds of thousands of ordinary people to force action? And then there are the SMALL BOATS. Burnham promised to be "relentless". But people are still crossing the Channel. Since he entered Downing Street, thousands more have made the journey. 3000 in total! We don't need another slogan. WE NEED RESULTS. Then there's Burnham's growing shopping list of promises: £2 bus fares, help for pubs, social-care reform, apprenticeships, energy measures and more. Some of those ideas sound great. I've said that myself. But Britain's finances don't run on good intentions. WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM? Burnham's first Budget isn't until October, so tonight I want to separate the announcements from the properly costed policies and ask whether we're being sold another enormous helping of JAM TOMORROW. That's my growing concern about Andy Burnham. LOTS OF PR. LOTS OF ANNOUNCEMENTS. LOTS OF PROMISES. But will he actually deliver? Council leader Neghat Khan has highlighted the sight of people riding around on e-bikes wearing balaclavas even in scorching summer temperatures and says people have a right to feel safe in their own city.  I AGREE. If you're riding around a city centre in 32-degree heat with a balaclava covering your identity, why shouldn't the police and the public be suspicious? But here's the question I want YOU to debate with me LIVE: If we're going to ban balaclavas in the interests of public safety, why shouldn't the same rule apply to ALL face coverings in public places — including the niqab, burkha or other veils that conceal a person's identity?  This isn't about attacking anybody's religion. It's about asking whether there should be ONE RULE FOR EVERYONE when it comes to identifying people in public spaces. If the argument is that covering your face can make other people feel unsafe, hinder identification or make policing more difficult, surely we have to be prepared to debate where the line should be drawn. Should religious exemptions exist?  Should people be required to uncover their faces only in certain places or when requested by police? Or should Britain simply say that, apart from genuine medical, occupational or safety reasons, faces should remain visible in public? And there's a bigger question. WHY HAVE BALACLAVAS BECOME SO NORMAL? Masked riders on e-bikes. Shoplifting gangs. Street robbery. Phones being snatched. Ordinary people intimidated in their own town and city centres. Have we tolerated this for far too long? Nottingham says it wants to become the safest city in the country. GOOD. Let's see other councils show the same ambition. But let's have an honest debate and let's not be frightened of difficult questions.

They warn us about our language. They appear terrified of being accused of racism or Islamophobia. But where is their courage when women are being stabbed in the street or gay people are apparently targeted at Pride celebrations? It increasingly feels as though terrorist atrocities and extremist violence are being treated as acceptable collateral damage in the political establishment's pursuit of uncontrolled migration and multiculturalism at any cost. Let me make the distinction absolutely clear: A Muslim is a follower of a religion. An Islamist is a political extremist who wants religious ideology imposed upon society. Millions of peaceful, law-abiding Muslims reject terrorism and want to live freely in modern Western democracies. They must never be confused with radical Islamists who despise our freedoms, intimidate women, persecute gay people and seek to undermine liberal democracy. But refusing to make that distinction—and refusing to confront Islamist fascism—is not tolerance. It is cowardice.  There is growing anger throughout Western Europe. Ordinary people can see what is happening, yet mainstream politicians continue to avoid the issue. They promise to control illegal immigration, defend our borders and protect the public—but nothing fundamentally changes. Why? Is it incompetence, cowardice—or do they simply lack the political will to solve it? And where is Andy Burnham? Whatever the eventual verdict, the allegations presented in court paint a horrifying picture of brutality. Tonight I'm asking a bigger question: What the hell has happened to Britain? This is not simply about one appalling killing. It is about the growing sense that our country has become harder, colder and more violent.  Too many elderly people are frightened inside their own homes. Too many criminals appear to have no respect for life. Too many decent, law-abiding people feel abandoned by a system that seems incapable of protecting them. But there is another deeply disturbing question that must also be examined.  Was Ann Widdecombe targeted because of who she was and what she believed? We do not yet know whether politics played any part in this killing. That is a matter for the evidence and ultimately the court. But the question cannot simply be dismissed. Was this solely a savage robbery, or was there also a political motive?  And if Ann Widdecombe was targeted because of her beliefs, what would that say about the toxic state of politics in modern Britain? For years, political opponents have been demonised rather than debated. Public figures are abused, threatened and treated as though they are not human beings. Social media rewards hatred, outrage and intimidation. Have we allowed legitimate political disagreement to become poisonous? Have we created a climate where people are no longer merely challenged over their views, but despised because of them? How did we reach a point where an elderly woman could allegedly be attacked with such unimaginable violence in the sanctuary of her own kitchen? Has the collapse of personal responsibility, family values, discipline and respect for authority created a society where acts of extreme violence are becoming increasingly normalised? Have politicians of every party failed in their most basic duty — to protect the public?
