I'm thrilled to share the latest episode of our podcast with you. This time, I had the honour of sitting down with Dr Raj Patel MBE.I worked with Raj when he was Interim National Medical Director of Primary Care for NHS England. Before that he was Medical Director for the North-West, and has held numerous senior clinical leadership positions in his career. But it was after reaching what he thought was the pinnacle of his career, that things took a turn for the worst.Imagine working across the road from a doctor, being asked to counter-sign his cremation forms for years - and one day realising that there were just too many forms for this to be normal. We're talking about none other than Dr Harold Shipman, one of the most prolific serial killers in modern history. Not only did Raj experience the chilling reality of this discovery, but in this episode he reveals the personal and professional battles he encountered as he helped uncover the truth. From humble beginnings in Leicester to becoming a trailblazer in medical leadership, with stints as a TV doctor, advisor to the Department of Health, and stand up comedian along the way, Raj's journey is nothing short of fascinating. *Highlights:Early Life and Influences (4 mins)Challenges and Triumphs in Medical School (8 mins)The Grueling Early Years as a Junior Doctor (9 mins)Transforming General Practice (11 mins)The Unveiling of Dr. Harold Shipman (22 mins)The Tribunal and Its Aftermath (29 mins) Personal and Professional Impact (31 mins) A Shift Towards Patient Safety (35 mins) Leadership Lessons and Personal Growth (37 mins)NHS England and Greater Manchester (40 mins)Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic (44 mins) Reflections and Future Roles (45 mins) Quick Fire Questions (47 mins) *Social mediaRaj on LinkedInFollow Raj on Twitter Hosted on Acast. In this episode of the IEA Podcast, we dive deep into the recent £20 billion "black hole" reported in the UK's public finances. Our expert panel, featuring Professor Len Shackleton, Editorial & Research Fellow, alongside hosts Matthew Lesh and Tom Clougherty, dissects the reality behind these figures and what they mean for the country's economic outlook. The discussion explores how this financial shortfall might impact future government spending and policy decisions. The conversation then shifts to the contentious issue of junior doctors' pay and the broader implications for public sector wages. Our panel examines the recent pay settlements, their potential consequences for productivity and efficiency in the NHS, and the delicate balance between fair compensation and fiscal responsibility. The role of unions in these negotiations is also scrutinised, with insights into how their influence might shape future labor market dynamics. Lastly, the podcast delves into the current government's plans for labour market regulation. The panel analyses proposed changes to minimum wage policies, employment rights, and sector-specific bargaining. They discuss the potential impacts of these reforms on businesses, workers, and the overall economy, offering a critical perspective on whether these changes align with the goal of promoting economic growth. We bring you a public affairs podcast with a difference. We want to get beyond the headlines and instead focus on the big ideas and foundational principles that matter to classical liberals. Adam Kay is a writer whose memoir This is Going to Hurt; Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor won the Book of the Year prize at the National Book Awards and has sold over three million copies. It was adapted for television as a BBC series that won four BAFTAs this year, including Adam's award for best drama writer. Adam was born in Brighton in 1980 and studied medicine at Imperial College London. In 2004 he started working as a junior doctor, specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology. In 2010 he left medicine following a catastrophic incident in surgery. He had kept a diary throughout his medical career, partly to help cope with the long shifts and stressful environment that came with life as a hospital doctor. In 2016 Adam read from his diaries for a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the positive reception he received from audiences encouraged him to use them as the basis for a memoir. The book became a publishing sensation, and Adam has published further books and enjoyed considerable success with his live performances. Adam lives in Oxfordshire with his husband James.
