Taylor Knox of NutraMedia is back for his second installment of the PricePlow Podcast. This time, we met early in the morning before SupplySide West 2023, where we had a great conversation about energy drink labels. Taylor already explained their label design process and “brand therapy” on Episode #087, but this episode is almost entirely about energy drink design and the business surrounding it. If you want an epic energy drink label — nearly on par with what the geniuses at GHOST have been able to do — but don't want to pay the extreme amounts of money it takes to make it, then TK and his team at NutraMedia are your team. This episode dives into the multifaceted realm of Natural Language Processing (NLP) with a guest expert, Ines Montani (#). The discussion revolves around the use of Python in the context of NLP, the complexities of language, the design of label schemes, and how educators and students can dive into this intriguing area. The conversation also touches on tools such as Prodigy (https://prodi.gy/) and Spacy (https://spacy.io/), as well as practical applications, including a humorous digression on the popular game, Fortnite (https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/). Teachers are encouraged to explore NLP with their students, emphasizing the importance of hands-on experience and data annotation. 2022 keeps the positive momentum rolling (at least with this podcast), as we're joined by the co-founders of DSSOLVR -- Vince Tursi (again) and Mike Semenec (a first). We often reference our first interview with Vince as an archetype for what this podcast is at its most complete, and this conversation only built upon that. On the beer side, we get DEEEEP in the coffee beer weeds (technical townies, UNITE); Mike sheds light on how the hell he maintains the aesthetic output the brewery demeands (spreadsheets and doodles); and we revisit the topic of decoding the elusive art of effectively managing people. If your new to the pod, this is a GREAT place to start, and if you're tried and true Grain Ganger, well, your welcome ;-)............. ................ .................. ......................... The booze bags dip their toes into the design world to talk about what makes beer labels stick out and Sean lends a bit of his expertise to explain a bit. They talk some other shit, don't you fret your pretty little head.
Stop telling me what to do.
Design is one of the least discussed but potentially most important things a brewery can do to tell their story. If you do it well you will connect with your customer, helping to build a critical and lasting bond, or as Ben Butler of Top Hat puts it, a "gentle handshake." This is especially true for new breweries trying to make their mark in the crowded marketplace today: how will your customers know what you stand for and what you are trying to say? And how will you stand out on the shelf with packaging that communicates this same message?Ben Butler founded Pittsburgh's Top Hat design and marketing agency before he had even graduated from college. His energy, passion, and entrepreneurial spirit - along with partner Aaron Easler and the whole Top Hat team - have propelled his agency to the forefront of craft brewery design and branding. Beginning with their "Will Work for Beer" campaign that drew the attention of their first brewery client Lord Hobo Brewing, leading to an impressive (and award-winning) brand refresh of Pittsburgh's iconic Iron City Beer, and on to successful projects for the likes of us at Reuben's Brews, Top Hat has made a mark as an innovative partner for breweries and other small businesses to refine their storytelling through design.Adam and Matt at Reuben's Brews are equally passionate about the role that storytelling and design have with connecting the consumer to the true mission of a brewery. When we embarked on our brand refresh project in 2019, even before connecting with Ben and Top Hat, we spent considerable time delving in to the "Why" of Reuben's Brews: the reason we brew and the reason we push to be better. In the closing notes of this episode Adam brings up the seminal "Start with Why" TED Talk by Simon Sinek which is worth watching for anyone who is interested in branding. This episode concludes the fourth season of Reuben's Sightglass and hopefully provides a capstone to this overview of the Business of Beer.--The fourth season of Reuben's Sightglass dives deep into the Business of Beer. Listeners will learn about the backend of the brewery businesses, the highs and lows, mistakes and wins, and what makes a good beer vs what makes a great beer. Let this season guide you through your personal beer story. It's time to embark on your beer journey.
This weeks guest is Matt Kump. He is a talented Graphic Designer serving the Craft Beer Industry in Vancouver BC. @itskumpy There are not many projects that can offer the pure creative freedom that comes with designing a Craft Beer label. Sure there are breweries that keep it a bit more mellow and systematic. But the majority just kick down the doors and create some awesome stuff to stand out on the shelf or flex some massive personality. In this episode, Matt shares with us 5 different craft beer label designs he created for Boombox brewing. Some with raised gloss features, some holographic, and some taking advantage of printing on a metallic label stock to create something incredible. There is a lot of great stuff in the audio of this but if you want to watch the video of this interview, it's on YouTube (link below) and you can see the labels as we talk about them. This week we are talking Spirit Label Design with Chris Porter from Creative Punch Marketing Group out of Memphis TN. We do a deep dive into the Rye and Bourbon labels his team rebranded and produced new labels for. They are incredibly detailed labels with so much that went into them. My favorite part was when he tells us about the local musician created a guitar 'lick for one of the products and how a part of that ended up on the label! Pretty awesome. We also talk about his journey to the design field and how he used to collect magazines and catalogs. Chris and I also talk about the power of print and how it creates trust and legitimacy for a brand or product. He also shares with us the 100th anniversary poster project he was a part of and why it was such a great experience. Thoroughly enjoyed this chat with Chris and I know you will get tonnes of value out of his stories. Check out our Instagram for photos of the spirits labels we talk about in this episode.
