Today's guest is Asif Ahmed, Partner & Head of Early Stage for Tech & High Growth companies at accountancy firm Cooper Parry. He previously founded Acclivity Advisors which was acquired by Cooper Parry and his role at both has been to work closely with early-stage founders and entrepreneurs across all accounting, tax and advisory disciplines - ensuring founding teams are able to help navigate and scale their startups. In this episode, we discuss Asif's background and how the pivotal moments in his life shaped him including his father's sixth diagnosis of cancer which was sadly terminal. Asif took over his father's business to support his family and this really shaped who he became and what he went on to do in his career. We also discuss when a founder should set up the startup's finance function, when is the right time to raise outside capital, why every startup should have a finance bible, and what one piece of advice he would offer a younger Asif.Quick apology for sound quality which is not perfect in this episode but hopefully it doesn't take away from the important lessons Asif shares about founders and the importance of getting your finance function up and running from the start of your startup journey.I learned a lot from Asif and I think you will too so please enjoy my conversation with Asif Ahmed! The voluntary carbon credit market has emerged rapidly as a market-friendly way of combating climate change. It has attracted blockchain-based entrepreneurs that see carbon credits as ripe for tokenisation, in large part because a novel idea developed by people outside the traditional financial services industry has yet to develop an infrastructure capable of hosting issuers, investors and traders safely. Greenwashing, double-counting, lack of transparent prices, an absence of trustworthy intermediaries and even outright fraud are prevalent. Existing efforts to overcome the lack of information and integrity in carbon offset projects have not met with success but both policymakers and institutional quality infrastructure providers are now getting involved, and hopes are rising that the carbon credit market will grow rapidly. But there are formidable obstacles to overcome. What topics will be discussed?Carbon taxes are a mess (e.g., fossil fuels are subsidised as well as taxed, and at differential rates). Is that good or bad for the carbon credit market? What is preventing the carbon credit market from growing?Registries do not seem to have solved the integrity problem in carbon credit markets. What can (e.g., the ICVCM Core Carbon Principles (CCPs))?Which bodies – securities or futures or commodities regulators – should regulate the carbon credit markets? The Taskforce on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets (TSVCM) advocated “core” carbon spot and futures contracts as “reference contracts” for other carbon credits. Has that idea progressed? Can and should carbon credit contracts be standardised? Can existing securities and commodities market infrastructures play a role – or is a completely new infrastructure required? How might carbon credit markets can be linked to ETS markets, potentially enhancing liquidity? Is tokenisation an appropriate technology for the carbon credit market?Does it make more sense to issue carbon credits natively on to a blockchain or to tokenise existing carbon credits? Is the lack of digital money a problem in the tokenised carbon credit markets as it is in the other token markets (and, if so, are Stablecoins an answer?)What might the carbon credits market of the near future actually look like? How durable are carbon credits as an asset class? To what extent are asset managers and asset owners deluding themselves that sustainable investing can also deliver high returns (echoing politicians that dress up costs as benefits)?Who is on the panel?James C. Row, Founder and Managing Partner at Entoro Capital, LLC, a middle-market, traditional and alternative investment bank based in Houston, Texas, and CEO of Capturiant. In a move that could have huge ramifications for India's fledgling Buy Now Pay Later market, the RBI has asked non-bank prepaid payment instrument (PPIs) issuers to not load these instruments through credit lines. Issued in the form of wallets or prepaid cards, PPIs facilitate purchases against the value stored on them. They can be loaded by cash, debit to a bank account, credit and debit cards. Fintechs in the pay later card business like Slice, Uni, LazyPay, PostPe etc make use of bank-issued PPIs and partner with NBFCs to offer credit lines to customers. In some cases, the credit line is provided by the NBFC subsidiaries of the fintech companies. For example, Slice's prepaid cards are issued by SBM Bank while Uni's cards come from SBM and RBL Bank. According to RBI, there are 37 non-bank PPI issuers, including Amazon Pay, Ola Financial Services and Bajaj Finance -- one of the biggest NBFCs. RBI rules say that PPIs are permitted to be loaded or reloaded by cash, debit to a bank account, credit and debit cards, PPIs, and other payment instruments issued by regulated entities in India but do not permit loading from credit lines. RBI's move has given rise to some confusion even as the industry is still evaluating the impact of its clarification, which is not in the public domain yet. Macquarie Capital said it could impact credit card challengers like Slice and Uni, who were adding lakhs of customers every month. PPI is meant to act as a payment instrument and not a credit instrument, it said, adding that many customers were also unknowingly taking a line of credit through their wallets at the point of check-out and some of these practices may not have gone down well with RBI. But given that RBI's letter is addressed to non-bank PPI issuers, Nomura analysts believe there will not be any restrictions on such pay later players unless a similar letter was also sent to bank issuers. Fintech startup RedCarpet's Founder Sandeep Srinivasa said that all BNPL products in India work on PPIs and the fintech lending ecosystem works on the principle of credit lines through wallets and built on top of PPIs. Jaikrishnan G, Partner & Head of Financial Services Consulting, Grant Thornton Bharat says, this will impact everyone in the BNPL space. Banks are allowed to top up PPIs through credit line, he says. With PPI out of equation, borrowing experience for customers will be impacted. This is a clear shock to the industry, will have a heavy impact, he says. Macquarie said that risks are increasing for the fintech sector, for which regulations have been light-touch so far. With the regulatory arbitrage now being plugged slowly, it is expecting a slowdown in growth and profitability prospects for the fintech sector in India. According to the brokerage, RBI has been coming down heavily on fintechs. Given the increasingly dominant role of fintech companies in the payments ecosystem, RBI's Payments Vision 2025 states that a discussion paper on the need for proportionate regulation for them encompassing domestic incorporation, reporting, data use, etc., will be published. It also talks about looking at the various charges for payments in such a way that it further encourages digital adoption. Nomura also says the RBI may want the underlying lender to formally issue a credit card by tying with card networks instead of creating a quasi-product for which customer ownership, and the responsibility of ensuring data privacy and security, are not always clearly defined. Jaikrishnan G of Grant Thornton Bharat says RBI strives to address regulatory arbitrage between banks and non-banks. We must not be under the impression that fintechs are not regulated by RBI, he says. With RBI not keen on the idea of issuing licences for digital-only banks, Grant Thornton Bharat's Jaikrishnan G said that neobanks and fintechs are under pressure to reinvent their business models, as they were hoping to even

This interview was recorded on February 10, 2022. If you'd asked Mona Sutphen at graduation what her career would look like, she might've mentioned a path into the film industry or advertising; somewhere far removed from the public service and community organizing world of her parents. Despite that, at the suggestion of her college advisor, she took the Foreign Service exam upon graduation and then promptly forgot about it, moved to Chicago, and began her career in advertising. That is until a late-night spreadsheet disaster led to a wake-up call declaration that “there has to be more to life than selling shampoo.” A few weeks later, Mona got the call that she'd passed the Foreign Service exam, sparking a decades-long career in the foreign service and public sector. This week's guest is the adventurous, inquisitive Mona Sutphen, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy under President Obama and current Partner/Head of Investment Strategies at Vistria. Mona grew up in a multiracial, community-oriented family in Milwaukee. In this episode, she shares her insights on working with global decision-makers throughout her distinguished career in public service and her ongoing dedication to problem-solving on the world stage. In the latter half of the episode, Mona discusses the undeniable future of crypto (and its regulation), the evolving ecosystem of decentralized finance (DeFi), and the potential of greater microloan access. Listen in to learn Mona's essential advice for individuals exploring the crypto world and the necessity of access to investment opportunities. (2:25) Who is Mona Sutphen? (6:24) Leaving Wisconsin for college (9:40) Entering public service (11:42) What is the goal of Foreign Service? (14:38) Competition (and collaboration) on the world stage (19:56) The art of negotiation (24:17) Spotify in the spotlight (25:36) The Clinton and Obama administrations (27:54) A dangerous moment in our country (31:46) Power and investment opportunities (35:43) The crypto landscape (42:31) Microloans and access to capital Eric Satz—entrepreneur, serial investor, lover of hot peppers— is the founder and CEO of Alto. The idea behind Alto was born out of a problem. Eric found a clear need to give people more control over their investments (and investment opportunities) in a simple, streamlined way and created Alto to make these opportunities available to all investors, not just the ultra-wealthy or institutional investors. We go to philosophical and thoughtful places in Episode 5 of Looking Outside with strategist Philip Ryan, Partner and Head of Innovation & Futures at Ipsos Strategy3. Today we're looking outside perspectives. Philip shares how his curious mind explores varied and broad topics, which allows him to pull in vast perspectives, that lead directly to more robust strategic thinking. Jo and Philip also discuss the benefit of pushing yourself into uncomfortable spaces and places in challenging your own personal status quo. Whether it's exploring new cultures, learning about how big ideas shape what we think today, or questioning your own preconceptions with new nuggets of thought provoking knowledge. Yup, it can even be as simple as sitting down and having a conversation with someone who has a vastly different life journey to yours. Fascinated with how big ideas were framed in the past, shape our present, and can influence our future, Philip also speaks on the history of ideas. -- To look beyond the familiar, Philip, unsurprisingly, has a broad range of sources to recommend: https://open.spotify.com/show/7Cvsbcjhtur7nplC148TWy (The Rest is History podcast), https://waitbutwhy.com/ (https://waitbutwhy.com) a blog breaking down surprising factors of big ideas, https://nowiknow.com/ (https://nowiknow.com) a daily newsletters educating on something new, https://nextdraft.com/ (https://nextdraft.com) a newsletter of fascinating news from Dave Pell, 'the editor of the internet', and Warren Berge's book https://www.amazon.com/More-Beautiful-Question-Inquiry-Breakthrough/dp/1632861054/ref=asc_df_1632861054/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312025907421&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10549091598708259971&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003566&hvtargid=pla-504424109927&psc=1 (A More Beautiful Question). Philip's personal go to is also to literally go outside (a popular choice, I also highly recommend it). -- Philip Ryan is a Partner in Ipsos Strategy3, Ipsos' marketing strategy consultancy, where he leads the innovation and futures advisory business, supporting brands as as they look to envision and create the future. He brings two decades of expertise in both industry and consulting, having been an SVP at Citi and an executive at Accenture. Philip has also worked in Marketing Strategy at LG Electronics and within the Customer Care group at Waterford Crystal. His clients include American Express, The Coca-Cola Company, P&G, Cigna, Conagra, Delta, HP, Mars, Mastercard, Honda and Hilton. Philip holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA in European Studies from Trinity College Dublin. He grew up primarily in Ireland and currently lives in Brooklyn, but bounced around, living in various cities in Europe, Asia and the US. -------------> https://linktr.ee/ThatsY IG: www.instagram.com/thatsy_podcast LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/giulioberonia FB: www.facebook.com/ThatSyouth Website: www.thatsy.net

After a 6 week hiatus during which I was recovering from a serious jet ski accident, I am excited to bring you a fresh episode of the Alpha Exchange. And it was wonderful to spend time with Andrew Scott, a Partner and Head of Client Solutions at Bach Option. Our conversation is an exploration into the complex factors that drive the clearing price for volatility in equity markets. In this context, we spend no time on the economic cycle or corporate profits or the latest missive from the Fed. Instead, Andrew explains how the vast industry of Asian structured products leaves banks with complex exposures to optionality, correlation and dividends. These trades, designed to create income in countries like South Korean that have seen interest rates in secular decline, leave banks with substantial long vol positions. Through our conversation, we learn of the concept of “peak vega”, an industry estimate for the level of the underlying index where bank’s are most long vega. Andrew also lays out in great detail the risk recycling that has long operated alongside the structured products universe. Here, depressed levels of index vol and skew in Asia encouraged hedge funds and asset managers to implement volatility relative value trades versus the S&P 500. Lastly, we touch on Andrew’s new position at Bach Option, joining founder Miao-Dan Wu in building out a firm dedicated to understanding and trading volatility at a time of great change in markets and plenty of catalysts for the next volatility event. I hope you enjoy my discussion with Andrew Scott.DISCLAIMER: This e-mail and any attachments are for the confidential use of the intended recipient. Welcome to Season 5 of The City Confessions! Before we get started with today's guest, this episode opens up with a quick introduction from your host Mariann Yip about what she's up to and what you can expect from this season moving forward. Instead of doing a solo episode as the introduction episode of the new season, we are joined by Reagan Petrehn, who is a a filmmaker, food and bev expert, and serial entrepreneur. Before co-founding his first business –1900 Barker– at 21, he spent several years consulting with and training professionals across multiple disciplines within the coffee industry across the US, Mainland China and Hong Kong –then the fastest growing market for coffee globally. In 2018, Reagan became a founding member at Felix Roasting Company in NYC. In addition to acting as Brand Manager and developing the guest experience, He created the unique (and often viral) food and beverage program that makes Felix stand out among foodies and coffee aficionados everywhere, and oversaw the meteoric rise in engagement from the press, tourists, and local New Yorkers. Currently, Reagan is refocusing his energies into his creative studio, Kind Studio, with an aim to develop meaningful stories through film. He hopes to utilize his background in hospitality to help hurting food & bev businesses get a leg up during and after Covid. Outside of his many professional pursuits, Reagan is an avid surfer, a distance runner, and is always looking for an excuse to play in the kitchen. In this episode, Reagan talks about how he met his partner of Felix Roasting Company, which is a stunning cafe in NYC. He opens up about how the design concept and birth idea came into fruition and the struggles of trying to maintain afloat as the company struggled with COVID last year. However, as someone who is constantly working on a million projects, Raegan and his partner was actually able to open a new location in August of 2020 in Soho. As a natural entrepreneur, Raegan explains how he got his motivation and confidence to start his string of businesses, especially in a city like New York.
